Nearly 800 guests immersed themselves in the luxurious world of Robert de Balkany, when the extraordinary hôtel particulier opened its doors for a series of events. The late entrepreneur’s stunning collection was celebrated before some of its treasures were auctioned by Sotheby’s Paris.

Hundreds of guests gathered in Mumbai for an extensive program of events supported by Gulf Sotheby’s International Realty. In addition to a preview of South Asian art highlights, a three-day course on international contemporary art was launched in collaboration with Sotheby’s Institute. The activities culminated in a reception at the Taj Mahal Hotel.

RETHINKING THE PAST Part of Kerry James Marshall’s mission as an artist has been to address the dearth of AfricanAmerican subjects seen on museum walls. “I think it’s important for a black artist to create black ﬁgure paintings in the grand tradition,” he has said. “Artworks you encounter in museums by black people are often modest in scale. They don’t immediately call attention to themselves. I started out using history painting as a model because I wanted to claim the right to operate at that level.” And after a nearly 40-year career, claim it he has.

CULTURAL WHIRL With its rich Habsburg history and an abundance of baroque and neoclassical architecture, Vienna is a beautiful city steeped in its imperial past. But on almost every street in its centre, you’ll also ﬁnd a contemporary art gallery, including such notable names as Galerie Krinzinger and Christine König Galerie, championing new talent. For more than three decades, Sotheby’s Vienna has been part of this dynamic scene. Not only has Sotheby’s organised record-breaking sales of works by Klimt, Schiele and Rubens, it has also promoted young Austrian talent through its Artist Quarterly programme of exhibitions. To mark its 35th anniversary, Sotheby’s Vienna is presenting a special exhibition of works from Austrian private collections bought over the years through the auction house. Held at the baroque Palais Schönborn-Batthyány, A Glimpse into Austrian Private Collections (23–24 November) will

bring together a range of pieces. “I called clients and said ‘I have this idea for a show. Would you loan us a few things?’ No one said no,” says Andrea Jungmann, managing director of Sotheby’s Austria, Hungary & Poland. “I was quite surprised by the positive response.” There are loans from Old Masters to contemporary art, including works by Jeff Wall, Thomas Struth and Thomas Ruff. “When Sotheby’s started in Vienna, there was no real art market in Austria,” says Jungmann, adding that buyers and consignors are increasingly international. Sotheby’s exhibition is a testimony to Austria’s passion for art, one reﬂected in Vienna’s

extraordinary museum collections. This autumn, the Leopold Museum displays for the first time its extensive holdings of African and Oceanic art in Foreign Gods: Fascination Africa and Oceania (through 9 January 2017), tracing the profound effect of tribal art on such figures as Picasso and Modigliani. Edmund de Waal: During the Night (11 October–29 January 2017), at the Kunsthistorisches Museum, has ceramicist and author of The Hare with Amber Eyes curating a show of Old Masters on the theme of anxiety and the fear of the unknown. For artful lodgings nearby, there is Hotel Altstadt, which displays contemporary works by Andy Warhol, Yayoi Kusama and others. To sustain art viewing, enjoy a coffee and strudel in the courtyard of Amerlingbeisl, also near the museum quarter. For lunch, there is Die Au, next to the TBA21 exhibition space, with its bar designed by Viennese artist Hans Schabus. And speaking of talented locals, the influential photographer and collector Peter Dressler gets a survey at Kunst Haus Wien (18 November–23 April 2017). For Dressler, who died in 2013, Vienna was an artistic inspiration as well as a place where “substance, quality, quite simply the magic of everyday life still exists in large measure.” —IJ

DESIGNER OF CHOICE Long before Tracey Emin was exhibiting her unmade bed and Damien Hirst was cleaving cows in half, Robert Rauschenberg was challenging notions of what constitutes art in the 20th century: his work Bed is a paintsplattered pillow and blanket, while the central element of Monogram is a stuffed Angora goat attached to a car tyre. Monogram and Rauschenberg’s other Combines of the 1950s – ingenious junkyard amalgams of painting and sculpture – are among the highlights of Tate Modern’s much-anticipated retrospective, the ﬁrst major UK exhibition of the artist’s work in 35 years. “Rauschenberg is one of those artists who, in the decade after the Second World War, truly transformed the nature of artistic practice, smashing through

the boundaries of different media,” says Tate Modern director Frances Morris. A progenitor of Pop art, Rauschenberg (1925–2008) drew on found objects, street signs, newspapers and images of politicians and sportsmen to capture the euphoric explosion of consumer culture in postwar America. The exhibition, which will travel to the Museum of Modern Art in New York in May 2017, touches on every period in Rauschenberg’s long career and includes his photographs and silkscreen paintings as well as his collaborations with fellow artist Jasper Johns, pioneering composer John Cage and famed dancer and choreographer Merce Cunningham. DISSENTING VOICE For his first major retrospective in Italy, the Chinese artist and activist Ai Weiwei has transformed the 15th-century Palazzo Strozzi from the outside in. On the building’s facade is the site-specific Reframe, 22 inflatable life rafts set over a row of windows. The installation is meant to raise awareness of the current refugee crisis, but with the colourful symmetry of repeating orange U-shapes, Reframed is an aesthetic statement as much as a political one. Viewers will also appreciate the technical virtuosity and clever use of materials in Refraction, 2014, a massive sculpture based on the shape of a bird’s wing and made with steel cookware, kettles and solar panels. Also on view are early Warhol-inspired pieces from the artist’s years in New York in the 1980s and 1990s as well as his signature installations that reconfigure everyday objects, such as bicycles, to illuminate the trials of Chinese life. What do David Geffen’s $54 million penthouse, a new Saudi royal palace and Diane von Furstenberg and Barry Diller’s 305-foot yacht have in common? Each has the sumptuous touch of François Catroux, the interior designer of choice for a select clientele that ranges from bankers to royalty. The Paris-based designer’s work, known for its luxurious materials and blend of comfort and elegance, is celebrated in the lushly photographed François Catroux by David Netto (Rizzoli, $65). Catroux’s interiors are as irresistible as the story of his career and glamorous life among the fashionable set – his wife, Betty, was a muse and close friend of Yves Saint Laurent. Catroux provides recollections about each project, including the ultramodern 1960s Paris apartment he and Betty shared and Diller and von Furstenberg’s Frank Lloyd Wright-inspired residence in Los Angeles. All bear his imprimatur of refinement and supreme confidence: “I never copied anybody,” says Catroux. “I was already a decorator when I was five years old.” —IJ

INSPIRING A CENTURY OF ART

AFTER THE WAR

DOMINANT DISORDER Reconsidering how the political and social tumult of the two decades following the Second World War informed artists globally is an ambitious curatorial idea, not easily contained within a single exhibition. Which is why this show comes as just the ﬁrst of a multipart, multiyear project. Headed by Haus der Kunst director Okwui Enwezor, with the museum’s chief curator Ulrich Wilmes and art historian Katy Siegel, Postwar will go beyond the standard narrative of Cold War tensions between capitalism and communism, with the explosive freedom of American abstraction challenging European cultural dominance. Through 350 works by around 218 artists from 65 countries, organisers will aim to look beyond the US and the continent and take into account how waning imperialism and independence movements in Africa, Asia and the Middle East were also shaping the art of this period. A widened scope means that paintings by Jackson Pollock, Francis Bacon and Joseph Beuys will be in close context with works by Ibrahim El-Salahi, Krishen Khanna and Yosef Zaritsky, creating a radically expanded, dynamic ﬁeld to re-evaluate these turbulent yet creatively rich decades. Even in difficult times, beauty can thrive. In 1916, an escalating First World War prohibited nonessential transatlantic shipping of just about everything, including such popular magazines as Vogue, from America. Ever resourceful, the British decided to create their own edition, and British Vogue was born. Its history is captured in Vogue: Voice of a Century (Genesis Publications, £800/$900), a leather-bound volume limited to just 1,916 copies. Combining full-page illustrations and photographs with interviews and articles, each book is stamped by photographer Mario Testino and individually signed by at least eight famous contributors, including Kate Moss, Sir Paul Smith and Stella Tennant. The Vogue book is handcrafted in Italy, where another celebrated brand is also turning 100. The House of Acqua di Parma has issued a special edition of its signature neroli scent in its classic Art Deco bottle, with an elegant sterling-silver lattice cover designed by haute jeweller Damiani. Libraries beckon with books, home theatres lure with films, and music rooms summon with sound. For centuries in aristocratic households, music rooms were de rigueur, and a musical education was a cultural imperative. People met to play in rooms that took their decorative cues from the world’s great concert halls. Today, dedicated music rooms are rare, according to Frank de Biasi, a New York-based interior designer whose residential portfolio includes projects in Europe, the US and the Middle East. De Biasi says instruments are often integrated into studies or media rooms, or treated as objets d’art. In residences where homeowners do dedicate space for acoustic experiences, the music room has been rebooted for the 21st century. Rooms are designed for multiple functions – from an intimate cocktail party for ten friends to a performance space for a hundred guests. For one client, de Biasi designed a space whose upholstered walls and dark stained finishes give it a nightclub feel. At a Corte Madera estate, outside of San Francisco, music is part of the property’s DNA. Once owned by concert promoter Bill Graham, of Grateful Dead fame, the estate now has a new residence designed by architect Sim Van der Ryn. A MATTER OF TIME

A CLASSIC’S STAR TURN As Jaeger-LeCoultre’s Reverso turns 85, its ability to surprise and delight remains intact, Mark Ellwood reports.

Now a high-end staple, the signature swivelfaced Reverso, whose details are hidden on the back, is in fact a surprisingly recent innovation. Dating only to 1931, it came about after British customers in India found their watches liable to smash during fast-paced, roughhousing polo games. In response, Jacques-David LeCoultre, then owner of Swiss luxury watch and clock manufacturer LeCoultre, turned to another firm, Jaeger, to create a reversible case; in turn, it contracted French designer René-Alfred Chauvot to conceive it. The Frenchman patented the most ingenious answer to the polo players’ quandary: a timepiece whose face – then covered with glass, rather than the now-standard sapphire – could be turned toward the wrist using an embedded axis. Called reverso, Late Latin for “I turn myself around,” this simple solution was so successful that its originators merged into the firm now known as Jaeger-LeCoultre. In the 85 years since the first Reverso, the design has become a watchmaking classic, earning a legion of illustrious fans including Britain’s King George VI, aviation pioneer Amelia Earhart (who wore a men’s model) and five-star US General Douglas MacArthur. Jaeger-LeCoultre has always celebrated the Reverso’s landmark anniversaries, often leveraging the occasions to introduce new iterations. On the model’s 60th birthday, for instance, the firm debuted complications on both the watch’s back and its front; for its 80th, it launched an astonishing 7.2-millimetre Ultra Thin version. With this year marking the Reverso’s 85th milestone, Jaeger-LeCoultre is streamlining its entire range and introducing several new models. Now, the Reverso is grouped into three core collections. The first,

known as Classic, maintains the original Art Deco proportions, traditional black-and-white dials and steel backs for engraving. The second, dubbed Tribute, embodies Jaeger-LeCoultre’s tradition of innovation, with the first trio of models showcasing the firm’s exquisite watchmaking skills. With female customers comprising half of their clientele, the third core collection is exclusively for women. Called One, it also features three new models. (Collectors in search of earlier ladies’ styles will find an unusual yellow gold pendant Reverso with diamonds from around 2000 at Sotheby’s Important Watches sale in Geneva this autumn.) In addition to reorganising its styles, JaegerLeCoultre has used this anniversary to formalise a longtime ad-hoc service: allowing buyers to customise key elements of their watches. Now known as Atelier Reverso, this programme includes a partnership with luxury shoe designer Christian Louboutin. “We didn’t want to be straightforward,” longtime JaegerLeCoultre executive Stéphane Belmont says of the collaboration: “Not just adding some of his red colour on a strap, but creating something by playing with colours, ones that would shimmer on the straps and dials. We wanted to be surprising.” Indeed, Jaeger-LeCoultre’s continuing ability to surprise is what has fuelled the Reverso’s popularity for so long. “Even today, when you show people the Reverso for the first time,” Belmont enthuses, “they are always surprised to see there are two sides. When the eminent interior designer Alberto Pinto died in 2012 after a long illness, his closeknit staff and loyal clients – many of whom had been with him for decades – were heartbroken. After a period of mourning, reality set in, and with it the question that any venerable creative firm inevitably faces when its founder passes on – what next? Would Linda Pinto, the designer’s sister and longtime right-hand in their 80-person Paris office, the one upon whom everything now depended, keep Alberto Pinto’s legacy alive? Four years later, the answer is yes. With Linda at its helm, Alberto Pinto Interior Design has continued to flourish. Indeed, its recent projects have ranged from designing the interior of a private Boeing 747 to renovating The Lanesborough, London’s most expensive hotel, to decorating public spaces in Monaco’s new 49-storey Tour Odéon, while outfitting its 35,000-square-foot, five-storey penthouse, which is reportedly set to go on the market for $387 million. This autumn, the company’s legacy and future are beautifully woven together in a new book, Alberto Pinto: Signature Interiors (Flammarion), which showcases eleven lavish residential projects that Alberto had started and Linda and the staff completed to his impeccable standards. (The text is by Anne Bony, with an introduction by Linda herself.) In his foreword, couturier Hubert de Givenchy underscores how the Pinto siblings’ relationship allowed the firm to keep growing. Speaking about Alberto,

de Givenchy recalls, “His delightful sister, Linda, assisted him with love and talent, and the affection between them was touching to see. This devotion to his memory is evident […] in the enthusiasm and loyalty with which she continues to honour his life’s work.” After studying at the prestigious École du Louvre, Alberto began his business in the late 1960s. His sense of disciplined opulence and ability to work in all styles – Classical, Modern, or Orientalist – made him a favourite of monarchs and moguls the world over, including the royal families of Saudi Arabia and Qatar. His outsize personality and legendary hospitality – he entertained countless celebrated friends, including Yves Saint Laurent and Pierre Bergé – made him a star of international society. Like her elder brother, Linda was born in Morocco. At age seventeen, she followed him to Paris, where she began managing a furniture gallery Alberto had opened. Aside from the short breaks when she had her two children, Pinto worked side by side with her brother and, as he travelled widely, she kept the office ticking. But respected as she was, she remained out of the limelight. All that changed upon Alberto Pinto’s death. Linda’s situation was not unlike that of another famous designer’s sister, Donatella Versace, a ﬁgure who had once been in the background but then had to take the reins of her brother’s company. After facing some initial skepticism, both women went on to prove themselves eminently capable of carrying on their brothers’ visions.

“FOR ALL MY COLLEAGUES – AND FOR HIM – I SAID, ‘WE HAVE TO CONTINUE.’ FOUR YEARS LATER, HERE WE ARE,” PINTO DECLARES. “I AM THE BOSS.”

“I had two options when he died: to close the doors or to continue,” Linda recalls during a recent interview in her office. “For all my colleagues – and for him – I said, ‘We have to continue.’ Four years later, here we are,” she declares. “I am the boss. Nobody has left. We thrive, with a well-oiled operation.” Marquise Jackie de Ravenel, a longtime Parisian tastemaker and friend of the Pinto family, seconds that assessment: “Linda is an amazingly effective person,” she says. “After [Alberto] died, the staff and their clients recognised how competent she is and how well she knew the business. So everybody has stuck with her.” On a visit not long ago, the Hôtel de la Victoire, the ﬁrm’s enormous headquarters in Paris’s 2nd Arrondissement, was buzzing with activity as Pinto conducted a tour. “Here we come to ‘the planes,’” she says as we reach a vast room devoted entirely to the design of private aircraft, including the aforementioned 747. A glimpse at a video tour of the massive plane reveals a veritable airborne mansion. Also on the drawing board is a private Airbus 320: “In commercial usage, it seats 130,” says a designer working on the project. “Here, it will have room for nineteen passengers.” Another equally large atelier is devoted solely to private yachts. Having worked on ten of the hundred largest yachts in the world, Alberto Pinto Interior Design has a leading role in this growing ﬁeld. Linda focuses on the joy the vessels provide. “While a house is for a family and you have to design it with many people in mind, a boat is the toy of monsieur, so we never see the wife when we are designing

a boat,” she explains. “The husband comes and spends hours and hours on the plans. When you deliver the boat to him, you see a smile from ear to ear. The richest men in the world – and they are like kids. I love this feeling.” Whether they are seeking the firm’s services for their private environments on land, at sea or in the air, the world’s wealthiest know to turn to Alberto Pinto Interior Design in their quest for the ultimate in luxury. Pinto says her clients have “the same mentality” despite their diverse cultural backgrounds – Chinese, Russian, Middle Eastern, North and South American and European. “Our clients are all top-level, so we treat them all exactly the same: we’re here to please them,” she explains. “Sometimes they cannot articulate exactly what they want, but we try to understand their way of life and figure out what they want.” Such was the case with Middle Eastern potentates, who began investing in Western properties three decades ago. According to Pinto, the firm did particularly well with these clients because it respected them. “Some interior designers gave them really awful, gaudy furniture, with gold and gold and gold, just because it was expensive. It was too sad and too bad,” she says. “We did everything completely French for them. In the end, they were very happy.” Keeping clients satisfied is something at which Alberto Pinto Interior Design excels, all the more so since 2009, when the firm launched a home line that produces meticulously crafted furnishings in materials such as parchment, lacquered wood and bronze. (A new collection debuted in October at PAD in London.) But enough shop talk. In keeping with her brother’s legendary hospitality, Linda has arranged for an exquisite lunch after the tour, prepared by the firm’s longtime chef and served in the ateliers’ private dining room. Before the salad and turbot, the meal begins with fruit, which Pinto believes is favourable to digestion and health – knowledge she has gleaned from regular visits to Espace Henri Chenot, a luxury spa at the Palace Merano, in Italy, a favourite destination of many art world figures. “It’s very logical and delicious,” she says of the approach. The same could be said of the ultra luxurious designs that are the Pinto standard.

On the occasion of Sotheby’s historic three-part sale of the legendary artist’s personal collection, his close friend and fellow musician Bono offers an appreciation. Plus, a sampling of Bowie’s own insightful words on the artists he admired and a selection of the works with which he lived.

avid understood the power of the image better than any musician who ever lived. He spent his life creating images, some of which he tried to occupy or personify, some of which he hung from his music and some his music hung from. He knew that in his time, more than any other era, ideas often arrived as pictures and that the world was being shaped by photography, cinematography and, even still, painting. He knew rather a lot about painting, more than you’d think. He called me in the early 1990s to mark my cards on a particular Roderic O’Conor that was coming up for sale. I was vaguely familiar with the work of O’Conor, an Irish painter who spent most of his life in France. Roderic was a genius but a rather traditional Post-Impressionist, an unexpected choice I thought for such a hipster like David. I was continually struck by the fact that David’s knowledge of the art world was so catholic that it could include O’Conor or even William Orpen, yet another Irish painter we discussed, who was an official war artist in the First World War. From his work, you would have imagined David’s knowledge to centre on German Expressionism or contemporary British and American painters – Auerbach, Hirst etc; for God’s sake, he even played Warhol in the film Basquiat. But no, his world was too big to be filled only by the avant-garde. He interviewed Balthus in the Grand Chalet in Rossinière, Switzerland for Modern Painters, an interview that led to my own interest and indeed a close relationship with the family that has lasted. Introductions to artists were one of David’s many gifts over the years. In the end, his passion for art came from a deep conviction that ideas mattered and that the way we see the world has an enormous impact on the one we build, both personally and politically. David was also very, very funny: he saw the serious role humour could play as a weapon to defend the beautiful from the ugly. This might explain his respect for those Dadaists and Surrealists who stood up to Fascism – Hans Richter, John Heartfield, Méret Oppenheim – and certainly his use of the Dalí and Buñuel film Un Chien Andalou as an opener to his Isolar tour in the mid-1970s. David didn’t go to any fancy art college but his work with Brian Eno became my alma mater, where I began a life-long interest in sonic art. His album Low was a high: such painterly sounds the world had never heard before, a new way of hearing and listening to music. BOWIE ON ART AND ARTISTS

AVID BOWIE was not just a collector of art, but also an informed authority on the subject. He was close to countless living artists and maintained conversations with them throughout his life. In 1994 he was invited to join the editorial board of Modern Painters magazine, to which he contributed in-depth interviews with the likes of Tracey Emin, Balthus and Damien Hirst, a review of the ﬁrst-ever Johannesburg Biennale in 1995 and a response to the life and work of JeanMichel Basquiat. Below is a selection of Bowie’s astute and deeply personal observations, ﬁrst published in Modern Painters and The New York Times on the art and artists that fascinated and inspired him. ON BALTHUS

Bowie suggested to the editors of Modern Painters that he might be able to secure an interview with the reclusive Balthus. Both men were living in Switzerland at the time and had met at a gallery opening for Balthus’s wife, Setsuko. One afternoon in the summer of 1994, Bowie drove to a mountain chalet in Rossinière to meet the painter, whose works of “timeless, serene, but disturbed sculptural claustrophobia” he greatly admired. Their conversation as well as Bowie’s introductory text are extraordinary. Sitting at lunch with the artist and Setsuko, he observed: “Balthus puts down his knife and fork and, staring at some far off point, says quietly: ‘I awoke very early this morning. I went to my studio and started work. It would not come.... and I gazed at my painting then the small things around me and I felt such a tremendous...sense of awe.’” His voice dies away, leaving “a misty trail of remembrances, glories and maybe disappointments,” Bowie continued. “Locked in silence, we three sit, Balthus, Setsuko and I. The tragedy and chaos of the twentieth century rushes through the memory of its last Legendary Painter.”

“Sometimes I wish that I could put myself in Duchamp’s place to feel what he felt when he put those things on show and said: ‘I wonder if they’ll go for this. Hirst was one of only a handful of high-profile contemporary artists for whom Bowie publicly expressed his admiration, interviewing him for Modern Painters in 1995. “He’s different. I think his work is extremely emotional, subjective, very tied up with his own personal fears – his fear of death is very strong – and I find his pieces moving and not at all flippant,” Bowie told Michael Kimmelman in an extensive 1998 interview in The New York Times.

ON JEAN-MICHEL BASQUIAT

“I feel the very moment of his brush or crayon touching the canvas,” wrote Bowie of Basquiat in a 1996 issue of Modern Painters. “There is a burning immediacy to his ever-evaporating decisions that ﬁres the imagination ten or ﬁfteen years on, as freshly molten as the day they were poured onto the canvas.” Bowie acquired Basquiat’s Air Power in 1997, the year after he played Andy Warhol to Jeffrey Wright’s Basquiat in Julian Schnabel’s 1996 biopic of the artist.

ON TRACEY EMIN “I love her fractured energy and could sit and listen to her for hours,” he said of the provocative Emin, whom he met in the 1990s. “She wants very much to be ﬁrmly identiﬁed in this modern world, but time and again she reveals a deep fascination with passions from another time – Munch, Schiele, Rembrandt, Vermeer, Giotto, narrative painting,” he declared in Modern Painters in 1997. Emin was mutually admiring: “Everything to me that David Bowie wrote was poetic, meaningful, a message,” she said in article for The Sun in 2013.

“I ﬁnd his kind of bas-relief way of painting extraordinary,” said Bowie of Auerbach in the 1998 New York Times interview with Kimmelman. “Sometimes I’m not really sure if I’m dealing with sculpture or painting.” Auerbach’s work provoked strong reactions: “It will give spiritual weight to my angst. Some mornings I’ll look at it and go, ‘Oh, God, yeah! Long divided between two museums, works from Sergei Shchukin’s magnificent Impressionist and Modern collection are finally coming together in Paris, Hilarie M. Sheets reports.

are is the collector whose combination of curiosity and generosity impacts artists’ lives in two countries, shapes a century’s development in the visual arts and remains relevant to the cultural discourse in the following century. Yet such is the case of Tsarist-era businessman Sergei Shchukin, who began acquiring new art on a trip to Paris in 1897 and decided to open his Moscow mansion to the public in 1909. From then on, Shchukin’s home was the place where radical new works by Pablo Picasso, Henri Matisse and Paul Gauguin, among others, exerted a formative influence on the Russian avant-garde. Yet war, politics and questions of ownership long obscured the legacy of Shchukin’s collection. His 278 works were seized by the state after the Bolshevik Revolution in 1918 and became the foundation for the Museum of New Western Art. Then, in 1948, they were divvied up by decree of Stalin, with some works sent to the Pushkin State Museum of Fine Arts in Moscow and others to the State Hermitage Museum in Leningrad, today’s St Petersburg. Now, for the first time since that division, the two Russian institutions are reuniting 130 Shchukin works for an exhibition at the Fondation Louis Vuitton in Paris (22 October–20 February 2017) that also includes 30 examples by Russian artists such as Kazimir Malevich, Alexander Rodchenko and Lyuobov Popova, all of which underscore the collection’s influence on the Suprematist and Constructivist movements. “Scholars all over the world have wanted to do a Shchukin exhibition for years, but it was impossible because of this historical split,” explains Anne Baldassari, general curator of French artistic heritage and former director of the Musée National Picasso in Paris, who was asked by Shchukin’s grandson, André-Marc DelocqueFourcaud, to organise the show. “This will be the rehabilitation of the Shchukin name and story. To see it in Paris will be a revelation.” Delocque-Fourcaud was instrumental in negotiating the collaboration between the Hermitage and the Pushkin, which have long been highly proprietary about their respective shares of the collection. He had originally contested the ownership of the works, taking after his mother – Shchukin’s daughter Irina – and after Shchukin himself, who had envisioned creating a public educational gallery and initially willed his art to the city of Moscow. After Shchukin went into exile in France in 1918, Lenin’s government created the Museum of New Western Art, which united Shchukin’s treasures with the art collection of Ivan Morozov in the world’s first great museum of Modern art. All of that was in accordance with Shchukin’s wishes, but after the state tried to sell off in the 1920s the works it considered bourgeois and decadent, the collector revoked his will. “The Shchukin family considered that they had been betrayed by the Soviets,” says Baldassari, who explains that

the international market refused on principle to buy any of the works. For decades after Shchukin’s death in 1936, the family’s efforts to claim the art were rebuked. Stalin’s rise to power after the Second World War marked a new threat to the collection. “Stalin hated such art and issued a secret order to close the Museum of New Western Art and disperse the collections,” explains Albert Kostenevich, curator of the French collections department at the Hermitage. So in a private deal in 1948, the directors of the Hermitage and the Pushkin moved to get the largest and most risqué works out of Moscow. The Hermitage in Leningrad took the bulk of Shchukin’s 50 Picassos and 37 Matisses, while the Pushkin kept the more placid Cézannes, Monets and Rousseaus. Over the decades, the two museums gradually brought their Shchukin pictures out of hiding, yet these pieces have always been displayed alongside Morozov’s more decorative French works and are rarely loaned out. In 2004, the Pushkin organised a homage to Shchukin, hanging all 110 of his works in the museum’s collection independently for the ﬁrst time. At that time, Delocque-Fourcaud dropped his family’s claim to the collection. A decade or so later, with Fondation Louis Vuitton chairman Bernard Arnault, Delocque-Fourcaud brokered the

Gustave Fayet. Shchukin ultimately bought sixteen Gauguins; twelve are in the exhibition, also in a dedicated gallery. These include Rupe rupe (La Cueillette des fruits), 1899, one of two works he strong-armed Fayet into selling to him for the towering sum of 47,000 francs – more than the Frenchman had paid for his entire collection. Shchukin had the conﬁdence to start buying Matisse’s work even before Leo and Gertrude Stein acquired the artist’s scandalous Femme au chapeau at the 1905 Salon d’Automne. While the Stein siblings initially created the market for Matisse by promoting his works on the walls of their Parisian apartment, Shchukin had the resources to replace them as Matisse’s primary patron. He directly commissioned many works from the artist, who circumvented his contract with Galerie Bernheim-Jeune by creating monumental works for Shchukin that were considered “non-standard format,” explains Pushkin curator Alexey Petukhov. Determination and risk-taking were hardwired into Shchukin. In 1908, Matisse brought Shchukin to Picasso’s studio, where the collector was alarmed by the recently painted Les Demoiselles d’Avignon, which he declined to buy.

partnership between Hermitage director Mikhail Piotrovsky and Pushkin director Marina Loshak to reunite much of Shchukin’s acquisitions in Paris. Born into a family of textile merchants in 1854, Shchukin took control of the business after his father’s death in 1890 and began to collect a mix of French, English and Nordic paintings. His early acquisitions are on view in the exhibition’s first room, where Baldassari has included works by French Symbolist Pierre Puvis de Chavannes and Norwegian Impressionist Fritz Thaulow. “It’s important to see this first part of the collection to frame what happened later,” Baldassari explains. On an 1898 trip to Paris, Shchukin bought his first Claude Monet, the 1872–73 Lilas au soleil (à Argenteuil), from legendary Paris dealer Paul DurandRuel, and decided to build his collection around the artist. In just six years, he acquired thirteen Monets, eight of which are on view at the Fondation in a monographic gallery, as Shchukin himself had installed them in his Monet Salon. His taste moved quickly from the Impressionists to the PostImpressionists, particularly Gauguin; his passion for the artist bloomed after he visited a great Gauguin collector,

This angered Picasso who, says the Hermitage’s Kostenevich, had imagined the collector would purchase it. Yet Shchukin did acquire two other proto-Cubist paintings on the spot, Femme tenant un éventail, 1907, and Femme assise, 1908, both on view at the Fondation and loaned by the Hermitage. It was remarkable for him to buy Picasso’s African-inﬂuenced works, which he did not entirely like or understand, explains Baldassari: “He collected against his own grain. Picasso was the same. They were trying to be freer.” The collector discovered Picasso around the same time as dealer DanielHenry Kahnweiler, and the two men competed for the artist’s works. Shchukin ended up buying more works by Picasso than works by any other artist. The Fondation has set up a gallery of 29 Picassos and another of 22 Matisses, based on an installation hung by Matisse himself in the guest room of Shchukin’s palace during the artist’s 1911 visit to Moscow. Today, Shchukin’s former home, located not far from the Pushkin, is the seat of the Ministry of Defense, around which new buildings are under development to create a museum quarter in Moscow. Loshak, the Pushkin’s director, hopes that the palace will be returned to the cultural domain; she has spoken with the Hermitage’s Piotrovsky about how they could collaborate to exhibit Shchukin’s paintings in their original setting. Hopeful, she muses: “If we have this house, we can work together as two museums that have the two parts of this great collection.”

Capital GAINS Washington, DC offers fine architecture, superb food and the buzz of being close to power and politics. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s also home to some of the finest museums in the US. Jake Townsend enjoys an art loverâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s weekend.

here was a time, not so long ago, when Washington, DC, capital of the US and a centre of global political power, was treated by leisure travellers as it was by senators, members of congress and diplomats: get in and out as fast as you can. No longer. This charming, vibrant American city affords many great reasons to linger. As our plane glides into Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport, we first get an aerial view of the tree-lined suburbs of Virginia and Maryland, then the city’s gleaming monuments to American democracy and finally the city itself. It is striking how classically Hausmannian it appears from the air. Although this isn’t always evident when on the ground and walking along the streets, Washington, DC’s L’Enfant Plan is a beautifully complex system of public squares, open spaces and a star-like street pattern. At first, navigation can be a challenge, but walking is a great way to discover the city, from its bustling downtown centre to quieter neighbourhoods with charming townhouses that seem a world away from the corridors of power. This mixed urbanism, where culture, business and government are part of one energised community, is as American as you can get. As our base for the weekend, we choose Georgetown, one of the more pedestrian-friendly and historic neighbourhoods. Although a number of well-appointed hotels have cropped up around town recently – Mason & Rook, Glover Park and The Carlyle Dupont Circle among others – on this trip, we return to a classic: The Four Seasons. The comfort, luxury and service are hard to match, as is the location near great shopping and the lush trails of Rock Creek Park. If you prefer to be in the thick of it, however, The Hay-Adams, located across the street from the White House, is a DC institution. The classic, columned architecture outside and understated luxurious interiors make for a consistently pleasurable stay. Another draw is Off the Record, the hotel’s famous bar, which offers a lovely pear martini amidst an old-school atmosphere. (About the White House: tours of the residence of the leader of the free world must be booked well in advance, regardless of who might be living at this symbolic address.) The plan for our first full day is a walking tour of the National Mall, but we don’t mind going a bit out of our way for breakfast at Union Market, a former warehouse that is now home to a bustling collection of restaurants and vendors. Southern biscuits at the Mason Dixie Biscuit Co. may be indulgent, but we’re on vacation. A great lunchtime option at the market is Bidwell, whose gin and tonic salmon is an inventive take on a classic dish.

Fortified, we head to the National Mall, determined to walk its 1.9-mile length from the US Capitol building at the east end to the Lincoln Memorial at the west, at the edge of the Potomac River, taking in some of the numerous museums and monuments along the way. The newest addition to the Mall and to the roster of institutions run by the venerable Smithsonian is the National Museum of African American History and Culture (NMAAHC), which occupies a prime five-acre site not far from the Washington Monument. Designed by the British architect David Adjaye, the metalclad building stands in striking, deliberate contrast to the gleaming white-stone monuments around it. Inside, the African-American experience is documented from the Colonial period to the present day. Among numerous powerful artefacts are a slave cabin from a South Carolina plantation and the bible that belonged to Nat Turner. There are photographs, letters and documents, pop-culture objects such as Chuck Berry’s bright red Cadillac and Muhammad Ali’s boxing gear. The collection is all the more remarkable as it was amassed over the past decade and includes objects that were donated by the public. The NMAAHC bolsters the city’s reputation as an important and ever-evolving destination for art. Also of great interest this season is the newly expanded East Building of the National Gallery of Art. The IM Pei-designed wing is dedicated to the museum’s collection of modern and contemporary art and is hosting a retrospective of Barbara Kruger’s bold text-over-photograph works (through 22 January). Kruger’s titles, such as Your Gaze Hits the Side of My Face, still resonate with as much fierce power as they did at the height of US culture wars in the 1980s and 1990s. The afternoon is rounded off with tea and sandwiches at the Pavilion Café, in the museum’s sculpture garden. When evening arrives, we seek greater sustenance and head to dinner. Washington’s reputation for old-fashioned, wonderfully overstuffed steakhouses means you’ll find plenty of dimly lit steakhouses where you can observe the city’s

power brokers in action. But locals know the city’s dining and drinking scene has exploded in recent years – Bon Appétit magazine just named DC its Restaurant City of the Year. The list of hot spots is dizzying. Tables are in demand at Rose’s Luxury and The Dabney, and the ramen is so good at Toki Underground that we don’t mind waiting a bit at this raucous eatery in the Atlas District. The very opposite of stuffy, Toki offers a delectable evening of authentically Taiwanese-style ramen and dumplings with not an ounce of pretence. We begin our second day with a return to the National Mall to visit the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden. Its headlining show is the ﬁrst major US survey of Icelandic performance artist Ragnar Kjartansson (14 October through 8 January 2017), whose immersive work has made him a

His 64-minute, nine-screen video piece The Visitors, 2012, which shows him and assorted friends making music in a rambling, upstate New York farm house is especially captivating. After a large dose of culture, there are few places more revitalising – and surprising – than the United States Botanic Garden on Maryland Avenue, next to the National Museum of the American Indian, another fascinating place. Inside this breathtaking series of glass pavilions, the languid, humid environment that supports what seems to be an entire ecosystem’s worth of American ﬂora delights the senses. We stop for dinner at Le Diplomate, a little slice of Paris in the Logan Circle neighbourhood. t Chatsworth, one of England’s most celebrated private houses and the seat of the Cavendish family for sixteen generations, the past meets the present in its vast art collection, acquired over more than four centuries. Sir William Cavendish, ancestor of the Dukes of Devonshire, bought Chatsworth Manor for £600 in 1549, and since then a passion for collecting has been spliced into the family DNA.
