======================================== What is Japanese encephalitis (JE)? JE is a viral infection of the brain, transmitted by mosquitoes (Culex species) in many Asian countries. It is more common in rural than urban areas, and can cause permanent brain damage and death. Travel medicine clinicians will usually discuss JE vaccination for travellers going to an endemic area for more than 2-4 weeks, especially if their travel includes a lot of outdoor or night-time exposures to mosquitoes.
