PRODUCTIVE CITY: THE CITY OF PIGMENTS Competition: Team:

Europan 14 - 2017

Marta Rodriguez, Ph.D. - Ingrid Sekse Tuan Mai - Emine Canak

Our concept to develop Papaverdriekhoek is to allow for: business, creators, and residents to live together in flexible spaces, to provide circular economy based on a modern integration of agriculture and city life, and to reflect the architectural traditions of Amsterdam in modern design. There are two key concepts in this design: that of the Double City and a City of Lanterns. The concept of the Double City breaks the issues of density and creates multiple cities - one on top of the other with qualities of the traditional Dutch city scale and character.

5 URBAN ANALYSIS

SITE PLAN

6 MAIN SECTION

The space is dived conceptually in three ways: production, living, and shared creative space. There can be units where the production is above living areas, under, or sometimes in a vertical space on two connected levels. All the bedrooms have similar dimensions and act as little apartments. The use can be transformed according to the needs of its inhabitants, adding flexibility of use. The shared areas can be rented to researchers, technology consultants, business people, researches during the day. This production space can be owned by the homeowner or the community because the use of the space on the ground and middle levels during the day, and their inhabitation at night, the community essentially shares the space 24 hours a day, providing natural “eyes for security and a sense of shared responsibility in a true community setting.

COMMUNAL LOUNGE PLANS

Symbiosis defines a cooperative relationship. The project proposes a close-knit connected community on both physical and social level. By sharing kitchen and dinning space, the project allows people in the same neighborhood to stay connected while solving the financial cost of space and living expense. On the urban scale, the proposal aims to over-paint the green on the top of existing gray concreted city map by creating a living style that put greenery and human in a symbiosis relationship.

Within an existing neighbor, local families would benefit from creating meal services parallel with the advantage of getting the home-grown food from the micro house’s gardens. Within the new symbiosis community, there are common kitchens and dining units for a group of around eight people, approximately four families of two, to share. Each micro house is exact 460sqft for a family of two with three plug-in units of one bedroom, one bathroom and living space, and a garden on the top level. The house is customizable base on the need and the growth of occupancy. 15

The Pinocchio Library is an experiential world that unfolds like origami from the paper factory. Two doors open to a world of imaginatio and wonder, like a big secret garden. Just as Pinocchio lives his adventures from his home to school, our library offers several journeys on a path from Via Benvenuto Pasquienili (west) to Via delle Cartiere (east). In fact, the whole area can be crossed through the garden without accessing the library. The paper factory “produces” the entire building that unfolds like a three-dimensional children’s book. Inside, the visitor moves through spaces that go from areas of play to learning and creativity in three levels of sound: noise (jubilee), vibration and silence. Our Pinocchio Library converses with Collodi and contributes with an iconic and genuine image. The new tower of the library speaks to the medieval tower, while giving a nod to the church. The roof of the entire library itself is designed to be enjoyed from the baroque villa and the medieval part of Collodi. INTERIOR VIEWS

FOREST CABIN: MINDFOLDNESS Competition: Team:

Silent Meditation Forest Cabin - 2018

Tuan Mai - Han Dang Zen master Thich Nhat Hanh has once said: “Your body is not you, you are only your soul and you can also be nothing at all. By letting go of your body, your mind and focus on only the flow of your breath, you could release all the tension of your body and the stress in your mind. By then, you would be able to connect with the presence and embrace the idea of being present. Meditation is a practice of living with mindfulness and a nourishment of inner-being. The word mindFOLDness is taking from the practice of Origami Meditation, finding a peace of mind in folding a piece of paper. In fact, Origami is recently found as a great yoga for the mind. It promotes relaxation, strengthens memory, patience and hand-eye coordination. MindFOLDness cabin design takes inspiration from an actual type of origami. So in every step, every turn, it reminds the visitors to slow down, to focus and to aware of their living environment. walking meditation
