POST-INDUSTRIAL CITY

The Spina Centrale of Torino

In the Post-War period, Turin was the most important industrial city in Italy. The railway, in those years had played an instrumental role. All the big Steel-Industries, like FIAT, were strategically located right next to the railway.

However, after the ÂŤEconomic BoomÂť the decline of the Steel-Industry determined significant social and urban changes. Many factories were closed and all that remained was brownfield sites and the rail that splitted the city in two parts.


THE PROJECT– Spina Centrale The project of Spina Centrale has involved an important transformation for the city: with the interception of the railway and the construction of a new urban network this Plan had swen back the urban fabric.

1986 Start of the preparatory studies wich higlights the role of the railway and the surronding neglected industrial sites. This area has called Spina Centrale.

1995 The development Plan was approved. The purpose of interventions on the "Spina Centrale" is to transform areas of urban decay, in the central part of the city, from the north to the south, into new urban centres.

2000 The Municipality of Turin established the Spina Centrale Project

The project, which is divided into 4 tranches, has been designed to meet certain needs: ➢ Need for modernization of railway line; ➢ Dispose and regeneration of Industrial areas next to railway; ➢ Increase of green areas; ➢ Realization of a new vehicular viability, pedestrian and cycle paths; ➢ Increase and enlargment of the Cultural Poles; ➢ Rehabilitation of the decayng outlyng areas.

It’s the first part of the «Spina Centrale» and represent the start of the new boulevard,built over the railway, characterised by thick Trees row which defining new pedestrian and cycle paths.

Spina 3 has been devoloped in Dora area: new commercials functions, advanced production buildings and residental areas were carried out oround the new Dora Urban Park.

It is the most complex part of the intervention. It is characterized by the new Porta Susa Station. It is an area characterized in particular by mainly cultural functions: the extension of the gallery of Modern Art and Politecnico university and the new civic Library was realized. These operations were possible through the reconversion of former industrial buildings

With predominantly residential functions, this area will host the Rebaudengo station connected to metropolitan lines built on unused railways. This area is of a crucial importance as it represents the binder between the urban area and the rural suburban zone. The industrial buildings in the site will be restored and used as a venue for meetings, shows and events.
