Can the school help me with travel arrangements? Yes, the travel administrator can help with your travel arrangements. Please remember that parents are responsible for girls from the moment they leave the site and that you need to allow plenty of time for arrangements to be made. You must advise your daughter’s housemistress of how and when your daughter will be arriving and leaving school and with whom they are travelling. If they are travelling with anyone other than yourself, permission must be given in writing. Coaches will depart from Tudor Hall for Cleveland Terrace, Paddington, Newmarket and vice versa. Girls should be at the coach 15 minutes before departure. There will be a senior girl or prefect who is responsible for checking girls on and off the Newmarket coach and there is a staff escort on the London coach. Please be punctual about meeting the coach. The driver will wait 15 minutes but there will be a surcharge from the bus company, which will be put on the appropriate parent’s account. After that the driver will contact Tudor Hall for instructions but may have to bring the girl back to school. What do I need to do about school trips? A copy of the school travel insurance is sent to parents at the beginning of each academic year. To simplify paperwork, we ask parents to complete a form when your daughter starts Tudor Hall, this will cover standard curriculum trips such as sports events, museums, lectures, theatre and school competitions. Separate consent will be sought for trips that will be charged to pupil accounts such as ice-skating, cinema, residential or overseas visits. Where do I park? At the start and end of term, exeats and half terms boarding parents are asked to park near the relevant boarding house. Day girls’ parents are asked to park in the top car park when they drop off and collect their daughters.

Girls are encouraged to add to their portfolio of A Level subjects by undertaking an Extended Project Qualification (EPQ). The EPQ is a major piece of

individual research and is viewed favourably by universities. There is also the opportunity for girls to study for the Leiths qualification. In the IVs, the girls will complete the ECDL (European Compulsory Driving Licence). Girls who wish to study for a GCSE in Computer Science can opt for this, as normal, in the IIIs. PE and sport play an important part in our curriculum and the sixth form girls are expected and encouraged to take an active part in both team and individual activities, at both competitive and recreational levels. If a girl competes at a high level in a sport that occurs mainly outside school, then she will be wholeheartedly supported. The enrichment programme in the sixth form is centred on the Contemporary Issues programme, independent learning, research into career paths and university courses and completion of the UCAS form. Will my daughter be taught ICT skills? All girls from Todds to IIIs receive 2 lessons of ICT a week (70 minutes in total). At key stage 3, the curriculum is split into 3 broad themes; ICT, digital technologies and computing. Can my daughter receive extra tuition? Extra tuition is available in a variety of areas. This is agreed with the relevant department and a charge made depending upon the subject and whether it is an individual or group lesson.

14

These sessions will be agreed with the relevant departments and charges made depending upon the subject and whether individual or group lessons are taken. The aim of the Learning Support Department is to help girls with any learning difficulties during their time at Tudor Hall. All new girls are reviewed by the Learning Support Department on entry and if needs are identified we may recommend that the girl is assessed by our educational psychologist. We cannot accept a report by any other education psychologist with regard to access arrangements for examinations. Both the assessments and subsequent learning support are chargeable as an additional extra.

Learning Support/Modern Language Orals/Mathematics Support

What careers advice is available? The careers programme is designed to introduce girls to the range of opportunities available and the skills required in the world of work. The dedicated careers room and library is always available to students, and holds a wide-range of literature and computer programs to support the girls. The Head of Careers is available to girls during the school day and evenings to support them with decisions regarding subject choices, university courses, Higher Education paths, work experience, CV writing and any aspect of careers guidance as required. The Head of Careers is also available to speak to parents at year group parents’ meetings or by appointment. Careers activities start in Todd, with a summer project relating to a specific career area and introduction to the NHS through their national ‘Step Into the NHS Competition’. The IIs also complete a workrelated project in the summer term. Work experience takes place in the IIIs, after GCSEs in the Vs and throughout the sixth form. Individual careers interviews are offered in the LVI as part of a programme that also includes presentation skills, CV-writing, applying for jobs and Gap Year opportunities. Speakers are invited to give presentations, run workshops and speak to groups of girls throughout the year, covering a wide-range of careers and there is an annual ‘Careers Fair’. When are Parents’ Meetings? Parents’ meetings are all shown on the calendar which is available on the Parent Portal and the website. In general, there are two parents meetings a year with a presentation beforehand. All meetings are timed when parents would be expected to collect their daughters to take them home for an exeat or holiday. If parents are unable to attend a parent meeting they should contact their daughter’s group tutor as alternative arrangements can be made.

PASTORAL

PASTORAL Who looks after my daughter? All girls are looked after primarily by their housemistress and group tutor irrespective of whether they are Day Girls or Boarders. Girls in Todd to IIIs are monitored by the Head of Lower School while girls in the IVs & Vs also have a Head of Year. House staff and group tutors share responsibility for your daughter’s well-being. Girls will meet their group tutor twice daily at registration. As well as registering your daughter there are two tutor periods. In these meetings there will be discussions about issues such as friendships, study skills, examination results and reports. This is also a time for the group staff to talk to girls on an individual basis about their progress. Sixth formers also have a tutor who oversees and supports all areas of their life in the school. Girls also have a vertical Housemistress who looks after them. All pastoral staff are supported by the pastoral team led by the Deputy Head (Pastoral) which includes the Chaplain, School Counsellors and Nursing staff. 17

How are new girls helped to settle in? Girls who join in Todd are given LVI buddies who will undertake activities with them during the first term and ensure they are cared for in their new environment. Girls who join us from the IIs onwards will be given a keeper from their year whose job it is to ensure they settle in quickly. Various activities, such as residential trips within the first few weeks of term for the younger years and an induction programme for those joining the Sixth Form, also run. The purpose of these is for girls, house staff and tutors to get to know each other as quickly as possible. All staff are conscious of the needs of new members of the community and will provide support.

How is boarding organised? There are 7 boarding houses, 1 for each year group. Every September the girls will move to their new boarding house. Year I in Todd; Years II and III in Main School; Year IV in Old House; Year V in Garden House, and the Lower Sixth Form (LVI) in Inglis. The Upper Sixth Form (UVI) live in Ashtons, which forms a good bridge between school life and life at university. All houses are run by a Housemistress who is supported by the Deputy Housemistress. Group tutors from your daughter’s year spend one evening in the boarding house each week. Boarding support is also provided by a number of colleagues. Day girls are welcome in the boarding houses at all times and special arrangements are made in Inglis, Ashtons and the Vs for them to study alongside the boarders. 18

There are three exeat weekends in the Autumn term and two in each of the other terms. These are evenly spaced on either side of half term and usually begin at 12.30pm on the Friday. Girls should return to school between 7pm and 8pm on the Sunday. Can my daughter have Sundays / extra weekends out? In addition to exeat weekends girls may also take:

PASTORAL

When are exeats?

Todd to IIIs Autumn term: one additional short weekend in the second half of the term, leaving after school commitments on a Saturday. Spring and Summer terms: either 2 Sundays or one short weekend leaving after school commitments on a Saturday. From IVs upwards Girls have the opportunity through the Manners and Contribution system (see p. 24-25) to earn additional privilege Sundays / short weekends. These will be granted dependent on school commitments and work being up to date. Arrangements for Sundays or weekends out should be made with the housemistress. Sunday outings can begin either before or after church on most occasions and girls must return no later than 8pm. Closed weekends Please note that the first and last weekend of all terms are closed weekends when all boarders stay in school. Is there a vertical House system? There are four houses: York, Stuart, Lancaster and Tudor. All girls are assigned to one of these four houses when they join the school. If other family members have been in a particular house we try to ensure that any new girl is assigned to the same house. The houses allow vertical grouping of students from Upper Sixth down to the Todds and as such they will meet weekly with the Head of House and House Captain. The House Captain is a girl in the Sixth Form, these change on a termly basis. A number of events take place within the Houses, including competitive sport and social activities.

How are girls encouraged to follow and explore their religious faith? Tudor Hall is an Anglican community founded and firmly based on Christian values. However, we warmly welcome those of other faiths and encourage them to pursue their faith as appropriate. Our Chaplain is Rev Dr J Jackson. Contact number: 01295 756257 On Sundays a service is led by our chaplain, and during closed weekends the whole school worships together. Roman Catholics are taken to the local Roman Catholic Church most Sundays. 21

Local churches welcome us for major services held with the families of our girls - the Carol Service at the end of the Christmas term and confirmation in the Spring term. Preparation for confirmation is undertaken prior to this. We observe the major Anglican festivals throughout the school year with a whole school Eucharist. The morning assemblies are based around themes that reflect and support our beliefs and values. Roman Catholic girls undertake confirmation preparation and they are confirmed in the local Roman Catholic Church. For further details contact Miss Lesley Evans on 01295 756231.

What is school like for Day Girls? Day girls are fully integrated into school life and they are invited to join the boarders for weekend activities. Parents should use the Wykham Lane entrance and pick up and drop off at the top car park by Holly Lodge. There is a one way system at peak times. Between 8am – 9am and 6pm – 7pm please enter the school by the Wykham Lane entrance and exit via the back road then along the main drive. Absence If girls are unexpectedly absent, please notify the school on 01295 756274 as early as possible in the morning. Government regulations insist we record authorised and unauthorised absences and submit them annually. Parents should submit a written note or email to explain absences.

22

If your daughter needs to be absent from school for routine matters such as medical appointments, permission must be requested from your house or group staff. Permission for extraordinary absence must be requested from Rani Tandon (I-Vs) or Ian Edwards (VIth Form). If parents are aware their daughter will be absent in advance they must request permission for

Parents are strongly requested not to take their daughters out of school for any but the most pressing reasons. It must be said that we object strongly to applications for leave that have the effect of extending the already generous school holidays. Overnight Stays Arrangements can be made with the residential housemistresses for occasional overnight stays if space is available in the house concerned. A charge will be made for this. We will try our very best to find space for day girls during very bad weather but we are not able to operate a system of regular flexi-boarding.

that absence, by letter or email, at least two weeks in advance.

Phones Day girls are not permitted to bring their phones to school unless they are in Division 1 or the Sixth Form. If parents wish to contact their daughter during the school day they are asked to ring the school office. What happens if my daughter is unwell during the school day? There is a nurse on duty 24 hours a day and the school health centre is open at breaks and mealtimes. Urgent health problems will be seen at any time. There are bedrooms available in the health centre if needed. We encourage all new boarders to hand in their medical cards and completed GP registration form to Sister before they commence school so that they can register with the school doctor. Please also provide at least 1 month’s supply of any medication prescribed by a practitioner at the start of each term at school. The school doctor comes to school once a week and is also available to the girls at the surgery at other times. Routine vaccinations or immunisations will be carried out with parents’ consent. Should your daughter be planning to go abroad, please inform Sister well ahead and the necessary vaccinations may be arranged here at school. Routine check-up appointments for dentist, optician etc, need to be arranged during school holidays to minimise disruption to school life. Should any girl receive any medication, treatment, injection, or suffer any illness during holidays or weekends at home, please inform the health centre directly. All medicines should always be handed in to Sister or the housemistress on return.
