Tulameen Days: Fun for the whole family Fire Ban in effect immediately.
Working towards a new community hall.
Enjoying your time in Tulameen? Let us know! Post your comments, photos or videos to our Facebook page: facebook.com/tulameencommunityclub Planning on using Instagram? Use the hashtag #tdays2015.
Presiden'ts Message Progress, growth, change, technology, conservation, preservation. Knowledge, respect, awareness, kindness. COMMUNITY. Many, many things are happening all around us, all the time, but without a community, individual efforts at any of these things is much less impactful. The old cliché, ‘the whole is greater than the sum of its parts’, is sooooo valid, especially here in our little town of Tulameen! You folks can pull together like no other! 2015, according to the Chinese zodiac, is the Year of the Sheep …. “I am a passive onlooker, I let bygones be bygones, goodness brings me fortune, I believe in the human race, I understand the meaning of giving, my cup is never empty, I am loyal and just and in others I trust, I AM THE SHEEP”. The first ever Winter Carnival in Tulameen that kicked off the New Year … and HATS OFF to the organizers… was a HUGE success! Honestly, the objective was to create an event that focussed on COMMUNITY, put on by the COMMUNITY, for the COMMUNITY, um.. ya Tulameen, you did it again …. Win-win … and win! Definitely doing that again, Tulameen! Starting this year we have a giant undertaking brewing …. Its daunting, its exciting, and its HUGE. A new Community Hall. Mark Jones, our Treasurer, has started the ball rolling and already has a pile of information and a bunch of good people working with him. Here’s the ASK… we need two things.. the first is for anyone who wants to be a part of the process to contact Mark to join the new hall committee, and secondly, we need to know (as will potential grant sources) that the desire to build a new hall is not the vision of a few, but the consensus of Tulameen’s property owners. I know, I know, its 2015 and you’re all sheep, passive onlookers (see above -2015), but you do know the importance of contribution. The easiest and loudest thing you can do is JOIN THE COMMUNITY CLUB!! Embrace the 2015 Sheep. Send in your thoughts, your concerns, your questions, your membership application to (info@tulameenbc.com) .. come to a Community Club meeting. See you there? Tulameen Days is right around the corner and, as usual, is our LARGEST fundraiser of the year. This is the one that keeps the lights on.. so we need your support! Decorate a cake for Friday night’s Great Tulameen Cake Off (perhaps win back your cake in Saturday’s Cake Walk), test your skill at the street games, sign up for horseshoes, have a beer in the beer garden with your Barbeque beef lunch, or come for a pancake breakfast on Monday morning. Tulameen Days is the collaboration of many, many volunteers who help to make this weekend a success! You can volunteer or you can support.. or of course, both! Don’t forget to visit the Tulameen Community Club booth on Saturday to sign up for your membership if you haven’t already done so! Baa-Bye for now …

A NEW HALL WE NEED YOUR HELP & VOICE Our Community Hall has been a gathering place all year round for many decades. It’s seen better days and we’ve outgrown it on many levels. Annual costs of operation and maintenance are ever increasing and at some point hard decisions will have to made as to whether to continue to put good money after bad, or to go out and build a new hall. Last year we spoke to Brad Hope, our then Area H RDOS Representative and broached the subject of assisting in the funding if we got community approval for a new hall. Brad was able to commit $75,000 to us and this money has been placed in an RDOS trust account and earmarked for a new hall. We again broach this subject with our newly elected Area H RDOS Representative, Bob Coyne, and he is considering further monetary support, but we need your emails of support in order to keep going forward. Whether you visit, own, rent or camp in this great community of Tulameen, you can help. You’ve seen what happens in the “Little Town That Could!” The ice rink has never been more used by so many people since the roof went up. People like you made this happen!
How Can You Help? It is as easy as becoming a member of the Tulameen Community Club. You don’t have to live or own here to be a member. You can join us in building a new hall. It takes all the people who use the ice rink, the public beach, hiking, mountain or dirt bike trails, geocaching or ride ATVs, snowmobiles or horses; even those who just get away for vacation time with family and friends. Help us with this amazing addition to our town. Yearly memberships are $15 for an individual, $25 for a couple and $30 for a family. Send us your letter of support , suggestions or comments to: info@tulameenbc.com. Without the majority of people supporting this endeavor we can’t get the funding going forward. Please join us in making this new hall a reality.

WINTER CARNIVAL 5
Our first Winter Carnival is behind us and we can call it an unqualified success. It was such a wonderful experience to see the whole town involved in all of the activities! We are looking forward to next year's event! Here's a recap: The Carnival ran from December 26th through January 1st and showcased the skills of the: Local Princeton /Tulameen Men’s Hockey Princeton Minor Hockey. Our new Area H Rep (Bob Coyne) dropped the puck in the game Princeton Posse Skills Competition Free figure skating lessons with Amanda McKenzie Human Bowling Exhibition Skate “Locals” hockey game There was a strong showing for all of the events, but one of the the most well attended was definitely the Princeton Posse skills competition. The Princeton Posse put on a fun skills competition and showcased the skating prowess of the players. Near the end of the competition they broke out into some 3 on 3 play with their players and then included 3 minor hockey players as well. A great event! Cooper’s Foods in Princeton very graciously donated 12 dozen hot dogs and buns so everyone could have a little something to eat after the event. Human Bowling took a little bit of time to get off the ground, but once everything was fine tuned the kids (and a few adults) were flying down the ice. Thanks to Chris Wagner, Jason McKenzie, Don McKenzie, Mike Lachance, Ed Anderson and Keith Sanderson for manning the equipment in the arena and Linda Anderson assisted in getting the kids outfitted in helmets outside the rink. Overall, a great time! Wood for the fire pit over the course of the week was donated by Bruce Morphy and Bill Reichert. Thank you both very much for keeping the masses warm! Bill and Candace from the Trading Post need a very big thank you for helping sell the majority of toques, coffee mugs and raffle tickets. No “ice event” is complete without the hard work of the person cleaning the ice. Keith Sanderson drove the Zamboni over the course of the Winter Carnival week almost 30 times and made sure the ice was in great shape for all the events. Thank you to Jason McKenzie for designing our Winter Carnival Logo and Amanda McKenzie for doing the legwork in getting our events lined up and giving free skating lessons. Our Snowman Competition got off to a rocky start as the quality of the snow was less than ideal, but in the end we had 7 entrants and were able to give everyone a little something for their time and effort. The entries were: 1st place: “Snowman City” built at the Kampf Cabin. This entry had 7 snowmen – playing hockey, “snowman” bowling, tobogganing, snowboarding etc. 2nd place: “Booze Luge” built at the Hassell Cabin 3rd place: “Sully Builds a Snowman” built at the Passey Cabin Honorable mentions: “Snowmen Drinking at the Ice Bar” built at the Lachance Cabin “Lightup Snowman” built at the Northway Cabin “Bear in a Tree” built at the Lawrence Cabin “Miss Tulameen Pageant” built at the Mumford Cabin. The Winter Carnival was a wonderful time for people of all ages, and was thoroghly enjoyed by all. Thank you to everyone who participated! We look forward to next year's great event. Until then, have a great spring, summer and fall!

Registered Charity As you may be aware, the Tulameen Community Club is a registered charity and issues tax receipts for donations. The Community Club has minimal administrative overhead and all monies generated benefit our community. Your membership will help support the town hall, library, museum and grounds, outdoor washrooms, ice rink and Zamboni, and events offered throughout the year to locals and visitors in the area. Membership has its benefits! Reduced prices for hall rentals, kids’ camp and more.

As the risk of fires increases due to the summer heat RDOS would like to remind Naramata residents (and residents in all dry areas) of the importance of water conservation during power failures that may be caused by extreme weather. If you experience a power outage in your area, please:
The Naramata water system pumps water directly out of Okanagan Lake. (We, in Tulameen, pump our water from our own sources but the premise is the same.) The system cannot replenish itself when the power is out. Running out of water damages pipes and equipment and reduces the ability to fight fires. Once the storm has passed, power is restored or fire is put out you can slowly start using water again. Thank you from the Regional District Public Works Department.
Fire Hall Door Replacement Bill Reichert donated a door to replace the one that was damaged recently. We thank Bill as a community for his donation and would like to point out that threatening the fire chief and fire department personnel is not acceptable and notice has been forwarded to the RCMP. The editor would like to add that we value our community and all the members of if who volunteer their time to keep us safe.
Around Town... Community Ice & Dry Arena As we have this wonderful new ice facility we are getting emails and calls about renting the ice for private events (aka hockey games). In order to keep the rink open for everyone to skate at their leisure, we have instituted a rental policy that we think will work for all concerned.
Notes of Thanks At the Senior’s Lunch in October everyone was served a selection of sandwiches and homemade soup. We would like to thank the Tulameen Trading Post for graciously donating the soup for this event.
-Local interest rentals (minor hockey) open any time -Weekend private functions are mornings only As our club is ‘solvent’ we don’t see the need to rent out the ice at all hours in order to generate money. The ability to go down to the rink and skate at almost any time is reserved for the locals.
Tulameen Marketplace Tulameen Marketplace was a huge hit this year! Over 15 vendors graced the ice rink floor from 9am to 1pm on May 16th for the annual event. Vendors ranged from 'garage sale' to baked goods, plants, jewelry, clothing and even a local trails representative to give more information on the recent changes in laws for offroad vehicles.
Senior's Luncheon Once again the Community Club hosted a luncheon for the area seniors on May 14th. Vermilion Forks Elementary School entertained everyone with some lovely music. The following is an excerpt from a card received from Peggy Sutton, President of the Ridgewood Lodge Resident Council: “Once again ladies you have outdone yourselves. We look forward to this outing each year and thank you from the bottom of our hearts for your kindness.” The ladies (and gentleman) who helped set up the event and served on the day are: Judy Wallace, Judi Hassell, Mardi Hassell, Barb Jones, Kathy Ellis, Georgina McEwen, Brenda Upton, Sara Fox, Trudy Kotzian, Kelly Reichert, Cheryl Maddalozzo, Debbe Hargreaves, Frankie Reichert and Ken Reeve.
Hall Rentals If you have an event, we have the hall. Hall rental includes the use of the kitchen, tables, chairs and use of the bar. For more information contact Nadine McEwen at: (250) 2956968 or email: tcchallrental@gmail.com.
Solar Panels We are now starting to see some benefits from the solar panels that were installed on the ice rink roof. In the billing period from February to April we generated 887 kilowatt hours of power which netted us $81.28 in savings. On the April to June bill we generated 2,095 kilowatt hours of power which netted us $191.96 in savings. With the hot weather we’re having we can expect even more savings to come.

Cemetery Report Upon noticing a downed tree on the fence we took a trip up to assess the damage. It was only the tip of the iceberg! There were no less than six downed trees, pulled up by the roots from the ice storm last winter. We thought that we would be picking away at it all summer. We had to walk in from the road because the ATVs and Snowmobiles had created a berm across the road. Ed Reichert was kind enough to go up and fix the road, Cheryl Maddalozzo and Bob Hughes came up to help and by the end of the day all the downed trees were gone. What a relief! Wayne Passey is fixing the fence and by the time you read this, our little cemetery should be back to normal.

New Phone In Coalmont After a long battle, the Coalmont pay phone has finally been replaced. The new phone does not accept coins, but it does accept credit cards and calling cards. 911 is available and collect calls can also be made. The new telephone is more robust than the old one and is located on the Telus hut on Front Street about 200 feet east of the original location. There is a sign at the original location and additional signage should be coming shortly. Bob trimmed some branches which were blocking sight to the new pay phone so it is more visible now. We are very grateful to Telus for listening to us and coming to a compromise that should work for everyone. We also wish to thank Alex Atamanenko (Federal MP), Jackie Tegart (BC MLA), Bob Coyne (RDOS Area H Rep.), all of their staff, members of the public and the press who instilled in Telus the importance of this much-needed phone. They were instrumental in helping us arrive at this workable solution. Submitted by Diane Sterne
Around Town... Join The Community Club We don’t need to tell you that this little Community is second to none…the support and ‘git-er-dun’ attitude has raised the bar in the province and well…the eyebrows of other community associations! We’ve been getting inquiries from them about ‘how it’s done’. (Yup! And quite frankly, it’s pretty awesome!) Our response?...plain and simple, it’s our residents and supporters. Seriously some of the finest folks on the planet. There are always great things brewing on the horizon and we need your continued support. Sign up for your 2015 Tulameen Community Club membership at www.tulameenbc.com or shoot an email to info@tulameenbc.com and let us know you’d like to be a member. Olivine Trail Work Party Hi everyone! This summer will see the exciting final leg of the Hudson Bay Brigade Trail make its way to Tulameen; camp five on the historic route! We planned a work party on the Olivine section of the trail in June. We cleared last winter’s blowdown and fixed some trail sections near the Tulameen River. This section has ATV access so it was an asset to those carrying tools and accessing certain sections where it crosses the old mining road. We camped overnight on site and thank those also who came for the day. During the summer we will have a crew construct three new campsites along the trail. If anyone is interested in coming out with them let me know and I can forward the summer schedule. Thanks! Happy Trails, Kelley Cook kacook@persona.ca
Watermelon Recipe Cut a hole in top of watermelon. Scoop out flesh like you would with a pumpkin. Purchase a spigot from Home Hardware and seal around hole with hot glue gun. This will not last forever so do it the day of your bash. Fill with “juice” and serve!
Photos
We are in the process of building our new website and we need your photos! We’d love your best scenic shots…Swimming, snowmobiling, wildlife, atv’ing, hiking, skating, waterskiing, whatever you’ve got photos of that depict this area, we’d love to use them on our website! Send them to info@tulameenbc.com please!

RDOS Fire Ban Due to the current condition of “high” fire danger rating in our regional area, the Regional District of Okanagan-Similkameen (RDOS) is implementing a TEMPORARY FIRE BAN. Effective at noon on Friday, July 3rd, 2015 and until further notice, all open burning, including campfires, fireworks, will be prohibited in the RDOS in conjunction with the municipalities of Penticton, Summerland, Oliver, Osoyoos, Princeton, Village of Keremeos, Hedley Improvement District and the Ministry of Forest and Range, BC Forest Service – Kamloops Fire Centre. This open burning ban is in effect to protect public safety and to limit the risk of person-caused wildfires. This ban does not restrict fires in cooking stoves using gas, propane or briquettes, or to a portable campfire apparatus with a CSA or ULC rating (providing the flame height does not exceed 15 centimeters) but does restrict fires in portable wood burning fireplaces and campfires. Anyone found in violation of an open fire ban, including campfires, may be issued a ticket for up to $345.00 per incident. Anyone who causes a wildfire through arson or recklessness may also be fined up to $1 million, spend up to three years in prison and be held accountable for associated firefighting costs. The RDOS thanks the public in advance for their cooperation in complying with this temporary fire ban. INFORMATION PROVIDED BY RDOS. Used with permission. Fire Ban Implemented Along With Water Conservation Info. Tulameen Days draws in large crowds from outlying areas. Please remind your guests and neighbours to use absolute care when smoking, using BBQ's and other flammable items.
If you see a wildfire, dial *5555 or 18006635555.
From The Fire Hall The Tulameen & District Fire Department is comprised of 28 members covering both the Tulameen & Coalmont area. The Department provides fire suppression and responds to other related emergencies. This group of hard working & dedicated volunteers (from past to present) have formed the department to what it is today. The Tulameen Fire Hall’s Fundraising & Events would not be possible without our volunteers, but also the community's support. Currently we collect and return recyclables throughout the year with the majority of our events happening during the August Long Weekend. Our T-shirt sales and Open House is hosted on the Saturday & the Duck Race is held on the Sunday of the long weekend. Along with these events, this year we will be holding our First Annual “Fire Fit” Challenge. It will be held at the Fire Hall on Saturday, August 1st from 10:00 am – 1:00pm. Sign up will start at 9:00 am and continue throughout the morning. This Challenge is designed for firefighters to simulate real life challenges in a course made up of 6 events that will be timed from start to finish. There will also be an obstacle course for our younger “firefighters”… Come out & challenge yourself! Our Dedicated Volunteers spend countless hours throughout the year training, attending weekly (Thurs @ 7:30) practices, classroom theory, learning new equipment, running through scenarios, becoming more proficient in essential duties, maintaining the equipment, sacrificing personal time on the weekends to train with the Princeton Fire Department, as well as attend out of district training in Kamloops which provided invaluable new skills & techniques to our team. The Hall is proud to announce that 3 of our Fire Fighters have completed training in Texas, as well as The Justice Institute of B.C. We also have a few more considering taking the same career path. This kind of dedication & knowledge will certainly be an asset to our community. There is much time & effort spent behind closed doors to keep our Tulameen Fire Department operating. Thank you to our “Tulameen Community” for your devotion & continued support. A Special thank-you to our Fire Chief Jody Woodford. Your countless hours - your hard work & dedication along with your continued support has been instrumental in our growth not only as a department but in our future as career Firefighters! We greatly appreciate everything you do for this community!
