CARRERA

1989 On this year I did the first drawings from which the ideas for these sculptures originated. These weren’t thoroughly planned: I just wanted to work around disproportioned human figures racing, using geometric synthesis. A few months after I started drawing sketches to take this figures into three dimensions. These defined the group of sculptures I would eventually title “Carrera”. Due to several reasons, I archived the project, with the idea of eventually returning to it. “Carrera”(Race): word with multiple meanings. Very common metaphor, used in varied contexts, specially during those years of significant changes, urgencies and needs from an inevitable reality. 2015 On this year, I resumed the project with some modifications, including new drawings and mockups. Nine small pieces, approximately 16 inches high, carved in cedar wood and painted. Carving is a slow craft and requires some physical effort. When I start scraping away the material, I like to imagine the shape until I reach it, overcoming the difficulties of the wood surface’s irregularities. This is part of the pleasure of carving; carving is like drawing in three dimensions. The process of working again with these images and ideas has been stimulating, and it has also brought me a certain inquietude. It might as well be a sign to keep on running. Tulio Romano
