MEMBER NEWS: PWB VOLUNTEERS AT NATHAN HALE HIGH SCHOOL

On Tuesday, November 16, nearly 20 volunteers from the Profesional Women in Building Council gathered at Nathan Hale High School to volunteer to speak to the young women in the contruction class. Initially shy, the students soon were able to open up about their favourite parts of the class and talk about their goals within the course. At the age of 15, many of them are unsure what career path they want to pursue, but they do appreciate the opportunity to learn the basics of construction. The students had the opportunity to ask questions about the home building field and learn about all the different types of careers and the volunteers were more than happy to answer. Kent Harris, the construction course teacher, described the typical class period spent learning practical skills such as tape measuring and fractions, while also utilizing these skills hands on and teaching the students build their own tool boxes to keep their own safety equipment and tools. It’s important that schools offer construction education in order to further interest in the field, and even more important for students to take interest and gather support from the community to stay encouraged and plan for their future.
