against each other,” Fridrich said. “But in the end, I think all three of us would agree that it has a whole lot more to do with the kids we put out on the field than anything we’re able to do.” The dominance of Jenks and Union is well-documented. Trimble, entering his 22nd Trojans season, has won 13 gold balls, more than any Oklahoma coach. Blankenship, fresh off a state title in his only season in Fayetteville, Arkansas, and four years as head coach at his collegiate alma mater, the University of Tulsa (2011-14), built Union into a powerhouse over 14 seasons (1992-05) and won three gold balls. We need Friday night lights more than ever

W

e’re losing school days and teachers and classes and supplies and bus routes. We have lost our way when it comes to funding public education. We are in danger of losing our minds, quite literally, as a result. But at least we have Friday night. I apologize if that sounds short-sighted. Guerin I’m simply that Emig desperate for positives. I’m Sports that worried columnist about where guerin.emig @tulsaworld.com we’re headed. I’ll take any excuse to show our kids we still care where they’re headed. I’ll take another season of high school football, the version where everybody fields a team and the OSSAA doesn’t have to reclassify because there is a sudden membership shortfall, and wrap my arms around it. I’ll take another season where everyone can benefit from the end of a grueling week. We have to be creative about educating our children in this state. That taxes teachers and puts a strain on their classrooms. But at least everyone can go to the stadium Friday night. Anymore, everyone really must go. We must find a way to scrounge up $20 for a couple tickets and a couple soft drinks. We must settle into our seats at kickoff and make sure we’re getting out of them over the next two hours. It might be uncomfortable for a few weeks. We’ll dress accordingly and stick it out. The score might be uncomfortable for some of our schools. Never mind that if at all possible. Again, we’ll stick it out. We’ll sit in packs and reach out to those wearing the same colors and cheering the same players. We’ll soak up the sense of community.

A son joins his father along the fence in Collinsville as the Cardinals played Pryor at Sallee Field last October. CORY YOUNG/Tulsa World file

Union fans enjoy themselves in the stands during the Redskins’ game against Moore last October.  Tulsa World file

We’ll be sure to notice the periphery. We’ll watch the ribbonhaired cheerleaders down on the track, the band halfway up

the stands and the face-painted students raising all degrees of heck in the first row. The language might get salty.

ad 100400945-01

We won’t understand half of what they’re yelling about. But we’ll take comfort in the fact that they came out like we once did, that they still care. We’ll notice the second-graders throwing the little plastic balls or leading their own little cheers. Even if the game isn’t going quite the way we hoped and it’s hotter than we anticipated, the sight of 7-year-olds in the shadows of stadium lights, their whole lives ahead of them, will be enough to make us happy. Eventually it’ll be 10 o’clock and time to go home. First, though, we’ll steal a glance at players shaking hands and kneeling before their coaches. We’ll see trumpet players pack up their instruments and fold up their chairs and the 7-year-olds play tag on their way to the gate.

It won’t be a community any longer. We’ll go our separate ways. Then it will be Monday morning and the stress of our children’s future will start all over again because it won’t have gotten any easier for our schools over the weekend. At least we had the football game, though. At least we have the football game. At least we have Friday night to come together, celebrate the end of a grueling week and show our kids something important, something that might get lost in how we treat education. They still mean so much to us. Guerin Emig 918-629-6229 guerin.emig@tulsaworld.com Twitter: @GuerinEmig

and Blankenship’s old stomping ground for a District 6AI-2 game on Sept. 29. Owasso’s record against Union isn’t any better than it is against Jenks. But Blankenship didn’t leave powerful Fayetteville, where he might have eased toward retirement producing one championship team after another, without relishing the idea of a new challenge. “We’ve got a lot of work to do, but it is refreshing to be at a school where you’re chasing two programs as good as these are,” Blankenship said. “At Fayetteville, we led from in front. At Union, it was the same kind of thing. But I’m intrigued to be at a place where we’re chasing two great programs. It’s a different deal, and I’m enjoying it.” Trimble and Blankenship coached against one another four times in the Class 6A final. Trimble won the first three (during the Trojans’ run of six straight state titles in 1996-2001), but Blankenship turned the tables 27-17 in the 2004 final. Shortly thereafter, he shook the high school football world by resigning to seek a college job. Kevin Wright replaced Blankenship for one season, then Fridrich arrived

Streakers: Long stretches of consecutive state titles in Oklahoma

Bixby and Wagoner have a chance to join a select group in 2017. Both have won three consecutive state football titles and only seven schools have won four or more (Jenks and Morrison have done it twice each). Wagoner, which hasn’t lost since Oct. 3, 2014, also has a chance to break the state’s 11-man record for consecutive victories. With 37 in a row, it needs six more to break Ada’s 42-game streak set in 1993-94. “We are capable and it is a big deal,” Wagoner coach Dale Condict said, “but every team is different. It’s kind of what keeps you coming back every year.” The Spartans have many of the key components from last year’s title team, but coach Loren Montgomery said they aren’t looking too far ahead. “We’re focused on maybe being a little better in some areas than we were last year. We want to play our best football and try to improve every week,” he said.

coach’s fifth title last December, ending Jenks’ run of four straight in the semifinals and beating Norman North in the championship game. “Frid put more rings together in his first four or five years than I did in my entire (Union 14 seasons),” Blankenship said. But it was Blankenship who started the ball rolling, and Trimble said his return has a sentimental quality. “We had so many exciting, great and memorable wins — and losses — against him,” Trimble said. “Now he’s back and I’m excited. I think it’ll be really good for high school football.” Mike Brown 918-581-8390 mike.brown@tulsaworld.com Twitter: @mikebrownTW

Inside the player rankings How were the rankings determined?

Barry Lewis High school barry.lewis @tulsaworld.com

This is not a college recruiting ranking list, although five of the nine seniors in the overall top 10 are already major college commits. The overall rankings and the rankings for each position were determined after consulting with other World writers and some coaches. They were based on past performance, projections for the 2017 season and college potential. I made the final decisions. The rankings included only players from the Tulsa metro, which covers schools within 60 miles of the World newsroom

in downtown Tulsa, plus Stillwater, Tahlequah, Tahlequah Sequoyah and Vinita. Players from all grades were eligible. The state’s top-25 players also are listed in this preview, with similar criteria used for those rankings.

Why was Wagoner’s Nikia Jones ranked No. 1 on the overall list? Jones’ first three seasons have included an incredible number of big-play moments in big games, starting with his 77-yard touchdown reception with 2:23 left to stun Metro Christian in the Class 4A semifinals in 2014. His elevation to

the varsity in ’14 just about coincided with the start of Wagoner’s 37-game winning streak that includes three state titles. His accomplishments on their own as a receiver would make a strong argument for being ranked No. 1, but he also excels as a safety and a kick returner, plus he punts. He does it all. He was the only underclassman in last year’s overall top 10.

Which players just missed being in the top 10? The last three cuts from this year’s top 10 were Bixby’s Tucker Pawley, Owasso’s Wayne Jones and Sand Springs’ Payton Scott. Just as was the case in

ad 100400457-01

2015 and ’16, it is a strong year for talent in the Tulsa area. Last year, Wagoner’s Malcolm Rodriguez was the last cut from the top 10 and wound up as the All-World boys athlete of the year. The last two players in last year’s top 10, Oologah’s Brock Martin (defense) and Union’s Shamari Brooks (offense), were the All-World football players of the year award winners. It was the second consecutive year that the No. 10 player in the preseason won a major World award. In 2015, Lincoln Christian’s Micah Wilson was the metro player of the year from that slot. So perhaps that bodes well for this year’s No. 10, Booker T. Washington’s versatile

Rylan McQuarters. The top10 rankings will be updated weekly through the season so players who aren’t in the top 10 will have a chance to move up there.

How did the others in last year’s overall top 10 fare? Seven of the 10 All-World player of the year finalists were in the preseason overall top 10. Nikia Jones, at No. 7, wasn’t a finalist, but he was a World All-State and All-World selection, and the two others were All-World second-team selections. THE FAVORITE: Union Coach Kirk Fridrich’s Redskins return only nine starters, but there are three major college commits who are among the area’s top-10 players — receiver CJ Moore, defensive lineman Jordan Kelley and defensive back Patrick Fields. Union, however, also has other proven playmakers such as wideout AK Wilson and defensive back JT McCloud. Union has to replace four starters on the offensive line that will be led by Ricky Stromberg and Mario Roland. The Redskins also have to replace last year’s All-World offensive player of the year, running back Shamari Brooks, but Darius Boone, who has been offered by Iowa State, has outstanding potential. Union won’t have a quarterback with much varsity experience, but that also was the case last year.

THE CONTENDERS

3. Broken Arrow

Coach David Alexander’s Tigers, after going 6-5 last year, have the potential to win a district title and reach the state-title game as they did in 2015. It will be interesting to see if the additions of successful former head coaches Jay Wilkinson (offense) and Travis Hill (defense) can lift the Tigers to their first gold ball. Broken Arrow has an experienced defense led by lineman Derrick Shaw and safety Gary Mossop. Broken Arrow’s offense has a powerful offensive line that includes super sophomore Andrew Raym. Matt Kaiser could emerge as one of the area’s top receivers in Wilkinson’s spread attack.

4. Norman North

Coach Brent Barnes’ Timberwolves took a big step forward by reaching the state-title game last year. Expect another highscoring season from the Timberwolves as World All-State senior receiver Drake Stoops returns and will be joined on offense by brother Isaac Stoops, who shifts from cornerback. Ryan Peoples will be the quarterback with former OU/Dallas Cowboys coach Barry Switzer’s grandson, Jacob Switzer, as the backup. Junior end Cole Mashburn has the potential to dominate on defense.

Jenks’ Ian Corwin Jenks’ Stephen Kittleman

2. Jenks

Coach Allan Trimble’s Trojans are looking for their fifth state title in six years. Jenks has the area’s top quarterback, Ian Corwin, and a powerful offensive line that could enable Noah Hernandez to have a breakout year at running back. Corwin will have a new group of receivers, led by DJ Wagoner and Braden Phipps, that has intriguing potential. The Trojans return most of their starters on defense, including playmakers such as linebacker Mitchell Kulkin and DBs Landon Morris and Noah Strong.

Norman North’s Drake Stoops

5. Mustang

Brayden Garrett will return at quarterback for the Broncos, who have reached the semifinals in two of the past three seasons under coach Jeremy Dombek.

6. Owasso

The Rams are the favorite to be 6AI’s most improved team after going 3-7 last year. New head coach Bill Blankenship, who has won four state titles, added one of his former Union defensive standouts, Antonio Graham, as associate head coach and former East Central head coach/Jenks standout Bobby Klinck as defensive coordinator. The Rams’ defense has the state’s top safety combo of Josh Proctor and Wayne Jones. Owasso’s offense has a lot of potential with quarterback Will Kuehne, who moved from Texas.

7. Westmoore

Braxton George rushed for 1,277 yards and 16 TDs last season. Those totals should increase with the arrival of World All-State offensive lineman Brey Walker from Southmoore.

8. Edmond Santa Fe

Nick Sharp had 11 TD catches last year for the Wolves, who will try build on the momentum of an 8-3 season.

9. Southmoore

Owasso’s Bill Blankenship

10. Moore

Also looking to continue on last year’s progress are the Lions, whose 5-5 record was their best since 2004.

The Sabercats have a decent amount of returning talent, but the transfers of Casey Thompson and Brey Walker may keep Southmoore from reaching the playoffs.

Courtre Alexander

Class 6AII Preview

Bixby’s bryce bray

The Favorite: Bixby Three-year starting QB Tanner Griffin is gone, but who’s crying for the Spartans? In some cases, they may be better than ever. Oklahoma State commit Bryce Bray and Tulsa commit Josh Owens are part of a dominating offensive line that enabled the Spartans to average 460 yards per game last year. QB Staton King has waited in the wings for his turn. Tucker Pawley rushed for 2,096 yards and 30 TDs last season. Sophomore WR Brennan Presley had an auspicious varsity debut last year, scoring the first two times he touched the ball. Spearheading the defense are bruising LB Coby Tillman, who registered 192 tackles last year, and OLB Ethan Hall, who had eight sacks.

Sept. 22, No. 3 Midwest City at No. 4 Lawton

Oct. 27, No. 2 B.T. Washington at No. 1 Bixby

Key district matchup has gone to the visiting team three years in a row and it’s the Hornets’ turn to win.

Players to watch 2. Booker T. Washington

Second-year coach Brad Calip has all the speed he needs and deserves better luck with injuries. Last year, QB Phillip Wheatley threw 11 TD passes but played sparingly after getting knocked out by Muskogee in the seventh week. RB Rylan McQuarters, son of former Hornets great R.W. McQuarters, had eight rushing TDs and averaged 7.3 yards per carry. LB Jason Harris had 87 tackles and eight sacks, and rangy DB Dax Hill had 45 tackles and two interceptions. Hill has scholarship offers from the likes of Alabama, Ohio State, Michigan, OU, OSU and Tulsa.

3. Midwest City

Bombers haven’t won a playoff game since the 6A split three years ago, but that could change with DE Jalen Redmond leading the way. The OU commit had 86 tackles and 14 sacks last year. QB Preston Colbert threw for 1,687 yards and 12 TDs.

Gage Fain

Kamren Curl and Joe Combs are gone, but Jacob Medrano threw for 2,506 yards and 23 TDs last season, and Mike Edwards and Michael Buckhanan were defensive standouts, leading the Roughers to their best record (9-2) in 10 years.

7. Stillwater

Get ready for another passer named Gundy in Payne County. Gunnar Gundy, sophomore son of OSU coach Mike Gundy, won his final seven junior varsity starts last season and logged playing time with the varsity. Stone Mesa, Jake Gray and Spencer Carter are veterans of an offensive line that gave Muskogee fits in the playoffs last year.

8. Putnam City

Sand Springs’ payton scott

OU commit Ron Tatum is rated seventh nationally at DE. The 6-foot-5, 275-pounder had nine sacks last year. Pirates played almost everyone close in their district last year and get Midwest City and Lawton at home in 2017.

9. Enid

Sam Smith Tatum

10. Bartlesville

Sandites have gone to the semifinals or beyond three consecutive years and might make it four. The defense will be strong again, and RB Payton Scott rushed for 1,904 yards and 20 TDs last year while averaging nearly 30 carries per game.

Cayden Aldridge

Tahlequah, QB, 6-1, 210, Sr. University of Oklahoma baseball commit accounted for 2,188 yards and 20 TDs last year, leading Tigers’ quarterfinal finish.

Caleb Bigpond

The Favorite: Carl Albert

The Class 5A race seems wide open again, but the Titans are always a convenient choice. Longtime coach Gary Rose retired in January after guiding the Titans to their 10th gold ball in his 23 seasons. Standout option QB Johnny Bizzell is also gone, but the cupboard isn’t exactly bare for new coach Mike Corley, who served as Rose’s defensive coordinator for 11 years. Dadrion Taylor rushed for 1,321 yards and 13 TDs last season and WR/DB Jason Taylor, an OSU commit, is a deluxe playmaker on both sides of the ball. He caught 10 TD passes and made four interceptions, including the one that cinched the wild 39-36 semifinal victory over Lawton MacArthur.

The contenders 2. Lawton MacArthur

Highlanders won the 2014 state title and are 36-3 over three seasons. JR Winningham led an 11-1 team as a sophomore and returns to the QB starting job as a senior after backing up Anthony Love last year.

3. Bishop McGuinness

Standout QB Jarett Lewis and WR Rubell Goe are gone, but six defensive

starters return from a squad that took Carl Albert to the wire in the 5A title game.

4. McAlester

Buffs like to punish opponents with a physical running game. Clay Slater, Matt Drake and Austin Dugan are the top returnees on a talented offensive line. Slater also will start on a defensive unit led by OLBs Bryce Singleton

and Austin Vilar.

5. Bishop Kelley

David Bolton and Reese Jones combined to rush for 1,585 yards last year. Jake McMurray threw for 1,158 yards, Davis Govrik had 34 solo tackles and Jack Griffin intercepted eight passes. O.C. Walker had 20 receptions and is described by coach JJ Tappana as an “awesome blocker.”

6. Collinsville

Hayden West runs a 40-yard dash in 4.5 seconds and caught eight TD passes last year. TE Grayson Boomer, a 6-foot-5 junior, is rated a four-star

Glenpool, RB, 6-0, 205, Sr. Rushed for 870 yards and eight TDs in Warriors’ first year at the 5A level. Also passed for 236 yards and three TDs.

Noah Grimett

Micah Thomas

Coweta, DB/RB, 6-0, 195, Sr. Had 86 tackles, two interceptions and a fumble recovery, leading a unit that held six opponents to 14 points or fewer.

Jerome Townsell

Edison, LB/DB, 5-11, 195, Sr. Two-time state wrestling champion logged 171 tackles last year and totaled 17 sacks in his first two starting seasons.

9. Coweta

recruit by 247sports.com. He has offers from OU, OSU, Ohio State, Notre Dame and many others.

7. Ardmore

Chantz Scurry rushed for 1,204 yards and 22 TDs last year, pacing the Tigers’ flexbone attack.

8. Guthrie

Bluejays took their lumps last season with young athletes at the skill positions. Jackson Waddell, who quarterbacked an unbeaten freshman team two years ago, passed for 800 yards in 2016 and is ready to be a junior.

JD Geneva may seem young for a starting QB, but coach Tim Holt said the sophomore has a “HUGE” arm. Garrett Taylor is just huge. The 6-6, 260-pound senior is moving to TE after starting on the offensive and defensive lines for two years.

10. Skiatook

Bulldogs are hopeful of a return to the dominance of 2014 and 2015 after struggling to a 5-5 mark last season. TK Wilkerson rushed for 1,158 yards last year, Cody Evans threw 13 TD passes and Chandler Perigo logged 136 tackles. — Mike Brown, Tulsa World

THE CONTENDERS 2. OKC HERITAGE HALL

Wagoner’s Nikia jones

THE FAVORITE: WAGONER Coach Dale Condict’s three-time defending champion Bulldogs enter the season with a 37-game winning streak, five away from the 11-man record set by Ada from 1993-96. Wagoner graduated quarterback/defensive back and All-World boys athlete of the year Malcolm Rodriguez; linebacker KJ Lee, the school’s all-time tackles leader; and All-State tackle Orlandis Roberson, but it returns many of its other stalwarts. Nikia Jones has been a big-time clutch receiver since mid-2014. Mateo Pena, Jakhari Hervey and Austin Condict return to lead the offensive line. Fullback/linebacker Marvin Trotter and wide receiver/cornerback Dylan Mayfield are returning two-way starters. Blake Dumond will succeed Rodriguez at quarterback.

GAMES TO WATCH

The Chargers, after two consecutive 3A titles, made a successful transition to 4A last year until quarterback Blake Adams’ injury. Their winning streak reached 38 before losing to Cascia Hall in the quarterfinals. Coach Brent Bogert has many of his key starters returning, including Adams, who also is a standout at safety. Adams has passed for 59 TDs over the past two seasons.

3. OOLOGAH

Coach Brandon Craig’s Mustangs have reached the past three state-title games. Oologah graduates All-World defensive player of the year Brock Martin and quarterback Casey Base, but it returns half of its starters. Chance Deitz, also a defensive end, will be the QB. The Mustangs have two power offensive tackles, Logan Carter and Chase Vance. Two-way starters Gunter Pearson and Cole Dunbar are impact players on both sides of the ball.

4. CASCIA HALL

Coach Joe Medina’s Commandos have lost to Wagoner in the semifinals the past two years. Dalton Abney returns for his second year as the starting quarterback and linebacker Bennett Boone will lead the “Blue Swarm defense” that may have the best line in school history.

6. HILLDALE

Coach Chad Kirkhart’s Hornets also made a smooth transition from 3A to 4A with 11 consecutive wins before falling in the quarterfinals. The offense returns six starters after averaging 50 points per game last season.

7. METRO CHRISTIAN

The Patriots are 88-20 in coach Jared McCoy’s nine seasons and they should register at least nine or 10 wins again this year.

8. NEWCASTLE

Quarterback Casey Thompson’s transfer from Southmoore vaults new coach Jeff Brickman’s Racers into serious state contention after a pair of 1-9 seasons.

9. TUTTLE

The Tigers have a 21-game winning streak in the regular season but are only 1-2 in the playoffs the past 2 years. Oklahoma State commit Hunter Anthony is a force on the offensive line for coach Brad Ballard.

Ten starters return on defense, including end Dalton May, and linebackers Levi Messner and Dylan Weiher. Messner led the Longhorns with 132 tackles. It’s reminiscent of last year when the Longhorns returned 10 starters on offense and were a juggernaut, averaging 49 points per game. It will be a challenge replacing quarterback Brandon George, who graduated after being the Gatorade state player of the year, as he accounted for 5,340 total yards and 65 TDs. However, major college wide receiver prospect Sean Shaw returns after catching 20 TD passes over the past two years. Also returning is Trevor Mansell, a 1,000-yard rusher who is another receiving threat.

THE CONTENDERS 2. OKC JOHN MARSHALL

The Bears, coached by former Oklahoma State star receiver Rashaun Woods, return the state’s leading rusher, Devonte Lee, after going 12-2 and reaching the state semifinals last season. Lee runs behind Memphis commit lineman Nigel Brannon, who also is a force on defense, where he had 60 tackles, including 10 for losses, last year.

3. CUSHING

Coach Barrett Shupe’s offense has seven returning starters, including quarterback Kade Holderread, who passed for 32 TDs during a 12-2 season that ended in the state semifinals. Berryhill returns Brady Williams, who rushed for 896 yards and 22 TDs last season, and Josh Sharp, a playmaker on both sides of the ball. Linebackers Rymond Green and Tommy Lawley were a big part of a much-improved defense last season.

Berryhill’s Brady Williams

5. SULPHUR

Jim Dixon, fourth on the state’s all-time coaching list with 301 wins, has seven starters back on offense, including Oklahoma State line commit Jacob Farrell, and Trey Kiser, who rushed for 1,380 yards and 19 TDs in 2016. He also had 109 tackles on defense.

Sperry, QB, 6-1, 175, Jr. Has led the Pirates into the playoffs the past two years. Produced 255 yards in a win over 2A runner-up Victory Christian last season. Accounted for 292 yards and four TDs, including the overtime winner against Dewey.

Matt Williams

Locust Grove, RB/LB, 6-0, 185, Sr. An aggressive blitzer, he had 111 tackles, including 14 for losses, last year. A physical runner with deceptive speed, he will be used more offensively after rushing for 330 yards and five TDs on 67 carries in 2016.

3 | Coby Tillman Bixby, LB, 6-0, 221, Sr. Coby Tillman said his fiery red beard is part of his identity. He wouldn’t dare shave it. “I probably haven’t seen my chin in about two years,” he said. It gives the Bixby linebacker a look of grim, almost fanatical, determination, which exactly describes how he plays the game. Tillman has been a tireless disrupter the past two years, helping the Spartans extend their string of consecutive 6A Division II state titles to three. He had 20 tackles in last year’s championship game against Lawton, 26 in a win over Sand Springs, and he finished the season with 192, along with nine sacks, 17 quarterback hurries and five fumble recoveries. It says a lot about Tillman that one of his favorite athletes is Brian Bosworth, the former University of Oklahoma All-American and twotime Butkus Award winner. “I love the physicality and the motor (Bosworth) had,” Tillman said. “He wouldn’t stop. He went 100 percent on every play and made devastating tackles. When (ESPN’s) ‘30 for 30’ show on the Boz came out, I just fell in love with it.”

5 | Bryce Bray Bixby, OT, 6-6, 305, Sr. Bryce Bray said he always has been big, and he likes it that way. “My size is what really helps me play the game,” he said. The Oklahoma State commit joins fellow tackle Josh Owens and guard Isaiah Lakin on what is arguably the best offensive line in Oklahoma high school football. Last year, the big men in the trenches enabled the Spartans to average 460 yards per game on the way to a third consecutive 6A Division II title. “We joke about it among ourselves, but we really take it to heart that we are the best,” Bray said. “People can question it. They can talk and put whoever they want up there as being the best. But in the end, it’ll prove out, like it did last year.” Bray said he relishes the moments when “the whole weight of winning and losing is put on (the linemen’s) shoulders” — like it was against Lawton in last year’s championship game. With Bray and company leading the way, Tucker Pawley rushed for 244 yards on a career-high 49 carries and the Spartans rallied to win 39-31. — Mike Brown, Tulsa World

Oklahoma commit Jordan Kelley describes himself as a dominating and punishing player, with his strength being a part of it. “I don’t really talk on the field,” Kelley said. “I let my play speak for me.” Kelley’s play spoke loudly last year. He was a force on Union’s defensive line with 55 tackles, including five sacks, to help the Redskins win the Class 6AI state title. And although Kelley doesn’t talk much on the field during games, he does do some talking during practices. Kelley also could make an impact as a member of Union’s “hands” team for onside kicks. That assignment came about from some trash talking with teammates during the first week of fall practice. Said his coach, Kirk Fridrich: “He got into an argument about who works the hardest between the receivers and the line, and he said, ‘All you do is catch a ball.’ So they stuck him on the Jugs machine, and he caught three in a row, and didn’t even flinch. He’s pretty athletic. And it’s always fun to get in a little bit of trash talk with Jordan every day.” Kelley said he is excited about his added assignment. And he also wants to show that media members are wrong if they refer to him taking plays off. “I’m tired of people saying that about me,” Kelley said. “That’s motivated me to play harder.” — Barry Lewis, Tulsa World

4 | Ian Corwin Besides his arm, Jenks quarterback Ian Corwin said his eyes are the most important part of his game. “I need them to see the defense and make sure everyone is where they need to be before the play,” Corwin said. Corwin showed in 2016 that he sees the defense very well, as he passed for 2,993 yards and accounted for 38 touchdowns. “Ian is a little stronger than he has been and throwing the ball with a little more velocity,” Jenks coach Allan Trimble said. “He knows our system a little more, and (offensive coordinator) coach (Dub) Maddox has given him a little more of the playbook.” In only his second game, Corwin led a late drive that culminated with his winning TD pass to Reese Leitao with 40 seconds left for a 38-34 victory over 6AII champion Bixby. “I have a lot more confidence now,” Corwin said. “I know the offense a lot better.” Corwin took a week off, for the most part, from football last month to attend a Young Life camp at Crooked Creek in Colorado. “It was great meeting kids from all over the country,” Corwin said. And one of those kids was a receiver from North Carolina who already has been selected for the Under-Armour All-America Game. So it was a good thing that Corwin brought a football and spent some time throwing to him, as well as to teammates Braden Phipps and Matt McCabe — who are part of a new receiving corps that is familiar to the QB. “I’ve been playing with them my whole life. That’s pretty cool,” Corwin said.

7 | Patrick Fields Union defensive back Patrick Fields doesn’t like to wear gloves because of the way they feel. “You get done playing a half of football and take your gloves off and then when you have to put them back on, they are cold and gross feeling,” Fields said. Fields did fine without gloves last season, as he had 61 tackles and three interceptions en route to Union winning the Class 6AI state championship. But the University of Oklahoma commit is excited about another number off the playing field — his 4.5 grade point average. “You don’t see too many Division I athletes with a 4.0 GPA,” Fields said. “The stereotype is when you get to this level and got all these accolades, you get lazy, and are being content and complacent. I want to break that stereotype, that’s what motivates me.” Fields plans to graduate from Union early and enroll at OU in January. Union coach Kirk Fridrich appreciates Fields’ intangibles. “Pat is definitely a leader,” Fridrich said. “This is a fun group to coach and part of that is how Pat comes to practice every day.”

Union, WR, 6-5, 180, Sr.

— Mike Brown, Tulsa World

— Barry Lewis, Tulsa World

Union, DB, 6-1, 190, Sr.

2 | CJ Moore Oklahoma State commit CJ Moore, who likes his long hair because it gives him a youthful look, is looking at elevating his position in Union’s rich football history. “I plan on breaking all the receiver records,” said Moore, who has 72 catches for 1,180 yards and 23 touchdowns over the past two seasons. Even without those records, he already has a special spot in Union lore with his three TD catches in last year’s victory over Norman North in the Class 6A state final. In 2016, he had 45 receptions for 654 yards and 12 TDs after suffering a torn meniscus a few days before the season opener. A completely healthy Moore has the potential to post blockbuster numbers this season. “It’s always good playing with no nicks, bruises or tears, always a blessing,” Moore said. “But I don’t want to get too selfish. I love to spread the ball around and get our other receivers the ball, and hopefully get them some offers.” Union coach Kirk Fridrich is impressed by Moore’s qualities on and off the field. “CJ has been a delight to coach,” Fridrich said. “We always knew he was a special athlete, but we underestimated his leadership abilities. As a sophomore, he was leading some of the seniors, so he’s been in that role for three years now. I love what he brings to us in the locker room as well as on the field.”

Owasso, DB/QB/WR, 6-3, 205, Sr. In Bill Blankenship’s last high school season in Oklahoma in 2005, he coached Dominique Franks, a defensive back who was named the Tulsa World’s state player of the year and helped Union win the state title. Franks went on to play for the University of Oklahoma and five seasons in the NFL with the Atlanta Falcons and Baltimore Ravens. Blankenship, in his first year at Owasso’s helm, is coaching another defensive back with player of the year potential, Josh Proctor, who is committed to Ohio State. Just as was the case with Franks, Proctor will see some action on offense. He rushed for 141 yards in a win as a starting quarterback against Broken Arrow last year. Besides Proctor’s great speed, his hands also have enabled him to become a big-time college recruit. “I want to try and use him some on offense in any shape and form we can. To me, that’s the fun part of coaching — trying to create ways for him to touch the ball, and to play defense, which he does so well without running him into the ground where he can’t play in the fourth quarter,” Blankenship said. Blankenship has coached many outstanding defensive backs in high school and at the University of Tulsa. “I haven’t coached him a game yet, but from athleticism, he’s in the best that I’ve coached,” Blankenship said. “I refer to him as being an elite athlete. The thing that really intrigues me about him is he’s an elite athlete with a good work ethic and with a commitment not to be a prima donna. And that’s really refreshing. “Sometimes you get the guys that are that good, and they kind of know it, and he keeps trying to get better.”

1 | Nikia Jones Nikia Jones has worked on his footwork this summer. “I can run routes and make breaks pretty well, but I have worked on it a lot,” Wagoner’s premier receiver said. “I know it is something I can get better at.” It might also help his defense. Jones is getting almost as good at defending passes as he is at catching them. He intercepted four as a sophomore and three last year, helping the Bulldogs win a third consecutive Class 4A state title. Defensive coordinator Travis Bryant said it stands to reason that an athlete with good ball skills would have them whether he’s playing offense or defense. “He has really good instincts,” Bryant said. “He’s doing some of the same things he does as a receiver when he goes up and catches the ball.” Let’s not forget Jones’ key offensive contributions in Wagoner’s 37game winning streak over three seasons, namely 104 pass receptions, 2,580 receiving yards and 46 total touchdowns. “At first, I really didn’t like defense,” he said. “It was something I had to do. But after the last two years, I’ve started loving it.” — Mike Brown, Tulsa World

6 | Josh Proctor

Mikey Winston says he always is ready for action. He doesn’t rely on a lot of pregame ritual. “I just throw on my pads and go play,” he said. The method hasn’t failed him so far. Over three seasons, he’s rushed for 3,295 yards and 54 TDs. He’s hoping for another huge year in 2017. “I want to get to 2,000 yards again, try to break the school record, and I want to see us go undefeated (in the regular season) again and get past the second round of the playoffs,” he said. Winston rushed for 2,140 yards and 42 TDs last year, leading the Hornets (11-1) to a district title and the playoff quarterfinals. Winston has a matter-of-fact way about him. You’ll hardly ever see him celebrate a touchdown. “We’ve always preached to him about being humble,” his grandfather, Mike Patterson, said. “We tell him to worry about doing his job and we’ll do the celebrating.” But Winston was ready to jump for joy in a 34-13 win at Metro Christian when he carried 41 times for 252 times — both career highs — and scored two TDs. “I was excited because that game gave us the district title,” he said. — Mike Brown, Tulsa World

10 | Rylan McQuarters B.T. Washington, RB/DB, 5-8, 175, Sr.

5

10

Rylan McQuarters said speed is his biggest asset. It enables him to make big plays for the Hornets, a team with 6A Division II title aspirations in 2017. McQuarters ran a hand-held 4.38-second time in the 40-yard dash before his sophomore season and had a laser-timed 4.54 at a Nike camp in Dallas this summer. His speed is no accident because his father is former Hornets great R.W. McQuarters. The 1995 All-State player went on to star at Oklahoma State before playing 11 NFL seasons. “I told my dad last weekend that I thought I could beat him now,” Rylan said with a chuckle. “The last time we ran, he beat me.” Rylan is creating his own Hornets legacy and doing it like dad did — on both sides of the ball. He starred as a defensive back as a sophomore, snagging five interceptions and scoring on two long kickoff returns in his varsity debut against Midwest City. But injuries forced him to play more at running back last season and he delivered eight touchdowns and averaged 7.3 yards per game. It’s a role he’ll likely continue as a senior while doubling at defensive back. “I didn’t think I’d be getting this many carries, but we’re trying to get the gold ball, so whatever helps the team, it’s all good,” he said. — Mike Brown, Tulsa World

Coach Tag Gross’ Dutch had a smooth transition moving from the Southwest Preparatory Conference to the OSSAA, as they reached the quarterfinals. Most of the Dutch’s key players return, including quarterback/safety Drake Roush. Linebacker John Connor had 194 tackles last season and if the Dutch needs a late field goal, it has one of the nation’s top-ranked junior place-kickers, Alex Felkins.

Camden Cargill returns at quarterback after passing 2,638 yards and 26 TDs during an 8-4 season for coach Tony Merrell’s Crusaders. Also returning is top receiver Bridge Bullard, who had 70 catches for 1,021 yards and 11 TDs. Key defensive players are Aiden Ferguson (142 tackles), Zach Hale (105 tackles), Hutch Hendrickson (89 tackles), Bullard (83 tackles) and Joshua Condreay (72 tackles).

8. ADAIR

Since 2011, the Warriors have gone 71-8, with a state title in

2015. Adair has a new head coach, Rob Gilstrap, promoted from defensive coordinator. The Warriors suffered heavy graduation losses and return only three starters on each side of the ball. Top returnees are receiver/cornerback Bryce Martin and guard/defensive end Levi Shaw.

9. VIAN

After last season ended abruptly with the loss of a 20-point, fourth-quarter lead to Holland Hall in the second round of the playoffs, coach Gary Willis’ Wolverines look to bounce back. Helping the Wolverines’ bid to accomplish that will be quarterback/linebacker River Simon, running back Bodhi Vann and linebacker Whitt Fletcher, who had 13 sacks in a 10-2 season.

10. STROUD

Coach Chris Elerick’s Tigers are experienced up front with three-year starters Mike Schmidt, Gunnar Pike and Dalton Armstrong. Coby Davis, who had 700 total yards and 11 TDs last season, returns at receiver. Sophomore quarterback Grant Elerick had a strong finish last season, as Stroud won its last three to finish 6-4.

PLAYERS TO WATCH Austin Hines

Adair, QB/LB, 5-10, 170, Sr. It has been a long time since Adair has entered a season with a starting quarterback whose last name wasn’t Bradbury, but Hines will follow in the footsteps of his two All-State predecessors.

The contenders 2. Talihina

The Golden Tigers are averaging 10½ wins over the past nine years. QB Sooner Box accounted for 49 TDs last year and coach Kelly Gravitt said the offensive line has gotten much better since the Tigers lost to Crescent 17-0 in the Class A quarterfinals. Gravitt said WRs Dylan Blair and Karim Byrd are “physical freaks.”

3. Afton

Big producers Gunner Hudson and Gabe Mustain are gone, but the Tigers still have Wil Amos, who accounted for 39 TDs for the 2016 state semifinal team. Seth Miller, a two-time state champion power lifter, heads a group of offensive linemen who have been together for three years. “We might just see a lot of smash-mouth football,” coach Zach Garner said.

Games to Watch Oct. 6, No. 10 Hulbert at No. 9 Barnsdall

Riders survived a late field goal attempt and won 34-33 last year. The rematch could have District A-7 title implications.

Oct. 13, No. 3 Afton at No. 6 Rejoice Christian

9. Barnsdall

QB James Cole accounted for 3,090 yards and 33 TDs last year and Ky Allen logged 106 tackles. The Panthers are eager to build on the school’s first winning season (7-4) since 2003.

10. Hulbert

Jacob Bruce rushed for 2,045 yards and 18 TDs last season and younger brother James Bruce caught four TD passes and averaged almost 40 yards on kickoff returns.

Players to Watch Daniel Giddens

Avery Moore

returned three interceptions for TDs last year and has seven career takeaways.

Tommy Smith

Gore, RB, 5-11, 205, Jr. Rushed for 235 yards in one game and totaled more than 1,100 for the season with 14 TDs.

Holland Hall, 6-0, 175, Jr. Drake Roush is not the first member of his family to be named a readers’ choice winner as the area’s top high school quarterback. In 2015, his older brother, Dakota Roush received that honor. “That’s cool,” Drake said when he was informed of the results that saw him receive twice as many votes as runner-up Staton King of Bixby. Drake Roush, also a key member of the Dutch’s defense at safety, has been the starting QB since succeeding his brother, who was injured during the ’15 season. Last year, Drake Roush helped the Dutch reach the Class 2A quarterfinals as he passed for 1,652 yards and accounted for 29 TDs. “Both brothers are very competitive,” Dutch coach Tag Gross said. “Drake has more experience and understands the game very well. He has improved in the pocket and in his arm strength. I expect him to be a leader. He really understands what everyone needs to be doing on offense.” Gross said Roush took a step forward late last season when he became more of a running threat. His biggest moment of the year came when he led a comeback from a 20-point deficit in the final nine minutes for a 27-26 win in the second round of the playoffs at Vian. Roush scored on a 1-yard run with 42 seconds left. “The summer has been going really good,” Roush said. “I have been going through my reads with coach Gross and I’m preparing for each game.” — Barry Lewis, Tulsa World

Jenks, 5-8, 190, Jr. It didn’t hurt Noah Hernandez with voters in the Tulsa Top 8 contest that he spent more time on defense than he did on offense last season. But it probably didn’t hurt him, either, that voters at least believed the Jenks linebacker was good enough to play in the offensive backfield. They made him the winner in the running back category ahead of the 2017 season when he actually might get to carry the ball more. “That’s awesome,” he said of the award. “It’s super exciting. It gets me ready, that’s for sure.” The versatile Hernandez has played running back since grade school. But he gladly made the switch when the Trojans were forced to rebuild their defense last preseason. “I was playing outside linebacker and then they switched me to the inside going into the summer before my sophomore year,” he said. Hernandez delivered 103 tackles, helping fuel the Trojans’ 11-1 state-semifinal campaign. Hernandez showed his running ability by averaging 42 yards on kickoff returns. He took one kick, one fumble and one interception back for touchdowns. He also carried the ball often enough to score four TDs. “I’m a running back first,” he said. “That’s what I played growing up and I never expected to play linebacker, but I love playing it now, so it doesn’t matter.”

Berryhill, 6-2, 190, Sr. Josh Sharp said his family took the Tulsa Top 8 contest seriously — especially his mom, Shannon Sharp. “She had a timer right by the computer to tell her when another hour had passed so she could vote again,” he said with a chuckle. The Berryhill senior said he figures it took more than his mom to put him over the top in the receivers category. “My grandparents voted for me and the whole Berryhill community has been helping me out. They’re always supporting the football team any way they can,” he said. Even head coach Pat Harper didn’t mind casting a few ballots. “I’ll do anything to get our guys publicity, but he’s a great kid and a good leader,” Harper said. “He had a lot to do with what we did last year.” Sharp contributed on both sides of the ball, helping fuel Berryhill’s 12-1 state-quarterfinal campaign. He totaled eight rushing and eight receiving TDs, made 50 tackles on defense, intercepted four passes and recovered a fumble. With a 3.65 GPA, Sharp has received a football offer from the U.S. Military Academy in West Point, New York. He loves the place, and not just necessarily because he’s considering a military education. “I visited up there about three weeks ago. The countryside was beautiful and I like how close it is to New York City,” he said. — Mike Brown, Tulsa World

Jenks, 6-0, 265, Sr. Steven Krager said his parents were his “biggest fans” in the Tulsa Top 8 contest fan balloting. But the Jenks two-way line starter said he realizes a lot of others must have voted in helping him win the award for defensive linemen. “I think it’s awesome. This is an honor. It shows how much the community loves the team,” he said. Krager was one of three Trojans who won in their position groups, joining Mitchell Kulkin for linebackers and Noah Hernandez at running back. All three are defensive starters from a unit that was rebuilt virtually from the ground up during the 2016 preseason. “We’re a lot better (on defense) this year. We all have chemistry with nine returning starters, so we’re gonna be clicking,” Krager said. Krager has college offers from Central Oklahoma, Northeastern State and four others, but is “not close to committing,” he said. As a youngster, Krager said he “looked up to the (older players) and I was like, ‘I’ll never be that big or that strong or that quick.’ but then I hit high school and we had an amazing strength coach.” He praised strength coach Jordan Johnson for “putting my body in the best shape and strength to stay healthy and compete to the best of my ability.” — Mike Brown, Tulsa World

Jenks, 6-0, 190, Sr. Mitchell Kulkin said it’s a red-letter day for Jenks’ inside linebacker pair. Kulkin won Tulsa Top 8 fan balloting at the position and his partner in the middle, Noah Hernandez, won in the running back category. “It’s exciting to have (Hernandez) side by side with me and also have him helping with our offense. It takes a special kind of athlete to be able to do that,” Kulkin said. Kulkin received more votes (13,181) than any contestant in any of the eight categories. He needed almost every one of them to beat Bishop Kelley linebacker Bryce Alonso, whose 12,941 votes were the second most. “I just want to thank the Jenks community and everybody who voted for me and made this happen,” Kulkin said. Kulkin and Hernandez were a formidable pair last season, leading the Trojans in tackles with 127 and 103, respectively. Kulkin has college offers from the University of San Diego, Northeastern State and Arkansas Tech and hopes to “play at the next level and make that dream come true,” but not before trying to win a gold ball in his final high school season. “I’ll be visiting (San Diego) when the season is over. The coaches there have been great and my dad is from the West Coast, so I’m familiar with that area,” he said. “But my focus right now is on my team and how I can contribute.” — Mike Brown, Tulsa World

Bishop Kelley, 6-2, 185, Sr. Jack Griffin surprised himself when he landed among the state’s interceptions leaders with eight last season. “I wasn’t expecting that at the start of the year, but the interceptions kept happening,” Griffin said. Griffin had one in the opener against Edison, another in Week 3 against Sapulpa, and then two apiece against Collinsville in Week 4, Hale in Week 9 and Shawnee in a playoff-opening win. “Jack Griffin has been very dependable and developed into a great free safety for us,” Kelley coach J.J. Tappana said. “We have very high expectations for him this season. He makes all of our secondary checks each play. He is a great student and young man as well.” Asked what he credited for his ability to come up with interceptions, Griffin said, “I watched a lot of film with our secondary coach (Justin Robinson) and was able to read defenses.” He also credited his teammates in the secondary. Griffin is a fan of the Seattle Seahawks’ defensive backs who give the Comets an example to follow. “They work well back there together and play as a team,” Griffin said. “Because they do that, they have a lot of guys back there who make plays.” Griffin had the closest margin of victory in the Tulsa Top 8 contest as he received 5,437 votes — 64 more than runner-up Cole Dunbar of Oologah. — Barry Lewis, Tulsa World

Cascia Hall, 6-7, 260, Sr. Harrison McCormick’s favorite NFL lineman is Dallas Cowboys All-Pro tackle Tyron Smith. “I like the way he plays the game,” McCormick said. “I like the way he does his job.” McCormick enjoys that he shares the same uniform number, 77, as Smith, although that was just a happy coincidence. McCormick, who helped the Commandos reach last year’s Class 4A semifinals, edged Oologah’s Chase Vance as the Tulsa Top 8 winner among offensive linemen by 130 votes. McCormick fared a little better in the voting than his brother, Jackson, did last year when he finished third among defensive backs. Jackson McCormick is now a student at the University of Oklahoma. Cascia coach Joe Medina said about Harrison McCormick, who can physically overwhelm many of the opponents he lines up against, “Obviously he has Division I size and athleticism. The sky’s the limit with him. “He’s so athletic for somebody his size. Toward the end of last season when we pulled him a lot, that’s when we got really, really good.” — Barry Lewis, Tulsa World

DALTON STAUROVSKY Bishop Kelley, 5-9, 170, Sr. Dalton Staurovsky’s hopes for a college and pro kicking career are lifted when he sees the path that his father, Jason, took to a six-year NFL career, including four with the New England Patriots. “That inspires me a lot,” Dalton said. “I want to kick for the Patriots someday.” Jason Staurovsky sees similarities in where Dalton is at this stage in his career to when he was entering his senior season at Kelley. “Technique-wise he is as good as anybody in the country,” Jason Staurovsky said. “But physically he’s not ready yet for a Power 5 school. He’s good from 47-48 yards, but he needs about 6-7 more yards to get a Division I scholarship.” Jason sees Dalton taking a college road that he did when he walked on at the University of Tulsa, which had an established senior kicker, Stu Crum. “Dalton is definitely a college-quality kicker,” Jason said. “He just needs to get in a college weight room and a year to grow.” Dalton didn’t have many field-goal opportunities last year. But after a slow start, he finished strong and kicked two of his three field goals in the district-clinching win against Tahlequah. “My goal is to kick a field goal every game.” he said. — Barry Lewis, Tulsa World
