aden Pennington had a hand in everything Sand Springs did on offense in 2018. But the former Sandite quarterback had plenty of help en route to his success on the ground and through the air. The offensive line paved the way for Pennington, and it’ll be up to the guys up front to usher in a new era for Sand Springs. With Braden Foster and Ty Pennington competing for quarterback snaps, Sand Springs coach Dustin Kinard knows at least he’ll have some returning pieces up front to get the offense in a groove this season. “Those guys are going to have to step up since we’ll have a newer or younger quarterback,” Kinard said of trio of seniors, Nick Hancock, Ryan Johnson and Josh Fincannon. “We’ll have to protect the quarterback because it’ll be a first-time starter on Friday night.” Hancock (6-foot-3, 280 pounds) will handle the left tackle duties, and Johnson (6-2, 285) will be positioned next to Hancock at left guard. Fincannon (6-2, 240) will anchor the right tackle spot for the Sandites.
football preview
The center spot has two candidates heading into preseason practices — junior Santana Naugle and sophomore Morgan Eubanks. Junior Jacob Weathers figures to slot in at right guard, and Kinard mentioned junior Lane Webster as another lineman who figures to see extensive time somewhere on the offensive front. “We need the three returners to really step up,” Kinard said. “We’ll need to establish the run, and then take some shots with play action.” In 2018, Caden Pennington and running back Joel Mackey combined for 1,815 yards and 20 touchdowns on the ground. Pennington also added 1,257 yards and 14 touchdowns in the passing game. And Kinard knows the passing game will only be successful if the Sandites can create opportunities with several ball carriers first. “We’re looking forward to those guys up front establishing our physical run game,” Kinard said. “And I’m hoping we can establish more depth along the offensive line as we go along.” Ben Johnson

Continuity key to football success in 2019
O
ne thing Sand Springs has going for it on offense is the amount of returning starters on offense. However, the Sandites won’t be afforded the same luxury on defense in 2019. In terms of players who have been starters for more than one year, there’s only one Sandite who fits the mold. That’s Jarrett Haley, a 6-foot-1, 175-pound senior safety. “He’s a two-year starter, and he knows the defense,” Sand Springs coach Dustin Kinard said. “He’s had a great offseason and has been really good in the 7-on-7 situations. He can come down and play against the run, or he can drop back and can cover.” Haley will be the defense’s captain,
and he’ll be surrounded by several newcomers. Riley Magee, Lane Webster, Jaiden Wheeler and Sango Whitehorn will be key contributors along the defensive front. That will leave Brooks Dudely and Ethan Sartin at linebacking spots in the middle of the field. “We’ll need a linebacker to step up and take that leadership role alongside Jarrett,” Kinard said. One thing Kinard hopes to avoid is players having to play on both sides of the ball. And he pointed to the 3-7 campaign in 2018 as Exhibit A. “Games against Bartlesville, Muskogee and Shawnee, we got tired late in games last year,” Kinard said. “I just don’t want anyone to have to play both ways. It really showed up in the fourth quarter of some games we should have won last season.”
The Sandites will open the season with non-district games against Mansfield Summit (Texas), Putnam City and Greenwood (Ark.), and those contests will be prime training grounds for the Sand Springs’ defense to get ready for District 6AII-2 play. “All three of those games pose great challenges,” Kinard said. “All of those teams are really athletic. Those three games will get us well prepared for the district games.” As a whole, it’ll be the Sandites’ ability to create some continuity that’ll lead to viable success in 2019. “We’re going to be young in all phases on defense,” Kinard said. “We’ll just have to play together and as one unit.” Ben Johnson

football preview
Charles Page High School Football History 2018: The 2018 season was a season of near misses and almosts. The Sand Springs Sandites finished with a 3-7 overall record (2-5 in district play), and they graduated a lot of starters. Several games could have gone either way, and the Sandites lost two games by three points or less. Shawnee beat Sand Springs, 23-20, on a field goal, and the Bartlesville Bruins beat the Sandites, 2927, for their closest loss of the year. However, the biggest win of the season was a 41-34 victory over arch-rival Sapulpa. 2017: The Sandites ended the sea-
son with a 5-5 record but advanced to their sixth-straight playoff berth. For the third-straight year, Sand Springs started the season 0-2 but advanced to the state playoffs with district wins over Bartlesville, Ponca City and Sapulpa. Midwest City ended the Sandites’ season with a 47-12 defeat in the first round.
2016: After starting the season 0-2,
Sand Springs won 5-straight games and ended the regular season with a 6-4 record. The Sandites beat Midwest City, 23-14, in the quarterfinals, setting up a showdown with Bixby, again. The Spartans beat Sand Springs to end the regular season, and the semifinal game would decide who goes to the state championship. Bixby won, 35-21, and eventually won its third-straight state title in Class 6AII.
2015: Sand Springs started off with an unexpected bump in the road, having to forfeit two wins due to an ineligible player. They went 5-4 in the regular season and third in Dist. 6AII-1. CPHS then beat No. 7 Stillwater in the first round, 49-14, and then knocked off No. 1 Booker T. Washington 30-23 in the semifinals, sending them to the finals for the first time in 49 years. Bixby beat CPHS, 38-28, in the finals at Union-
Tuttle Stadium, ending with a 7-5 record (9-3 without the forfeits). This was the fourth-straight playoff berth for CPHS, and the second-straight year they won a playoff game. 2014: The Sandites played in the
first split-Class season. There was a Large School Division I and a Small School Division II and Sand Springs ended with an 8-4 record and a 5-2 record in Dist. 6AII-1, making the playoffs. They beat Midwest City (29-28) but fell to eventual state champion Bixby, 41-14. This was the third-straight playoff berth for CPHS.
2013: CPHS went 6-5 with a first round playoff loss to Westmoore. The Sandites ended the regular season with a 6-4 record, and a third place finish in Dist. 6A-1. They started with a 1-2 record but bounced back in district play. Westmoore beat Sand Springs, 31-10 in the first round of the playoffs. This was the second-straight playoff berth for the Sandites. 2012: The Sandites had a record-
breaking season, ending with an 8-3 record with a first-round playoff loss to Broken Arrow. Cody Hilderbrandt broke the record for single-season TD receptions with 11, and Cody Hale now holds the single-season passing TD record with 22, passing yards with over 2,400 and singlegame passing yards with 371. The Sandites started the season 6-0 before falling to Union in week 7. CPHS lost to three teams that were ranked No. 4 or higher. This was the first time the Sandites made the playoffs in three years. 2009: A lot was expected from the
Sandites but tragedy struck in the season opener and they missed the playoffs by one game. Senior

Q Head Coach &a Dustin kinard The 2019 season will be Dustin Kinard’s 13th as the Sandites’ head coach. The Sand Springs native — before moving to Ohio while in high school — spent some time answering some questions before the 2019 season gets started. With the Sand Springs community enduring some life-changing flooding in the spring months, how different has this approach been for the 2019 season? It put everything into perspective, and that there are other things other than football. It slows life down for ya, and how you have to take care of life first. You’ve been battling pancreatic cancer for some time now, so what’s the status of your health? I’m doing good. Hopefully Sept. 11 will be my last chemo treatment. After that, we’ll just go from there. As someone who’s been a head coach for more than a decade, how exciting is the month of August when you get to prepare for the upcoming season? It gives me another opportunity to help kids. That’s what it’s all about. I want to help them make right decisions and maybe win some ball games along the way. Often times in the summer months, you’re mowing a lot of property. How long have you been doing that? Since I was in college, so more than 20
years. That’s how me and my family are able to go on vacation every year. So what’s your favorite vacation spot? For the last 10 years, we had gone to Gulf Shores (Ala.). But now you can fly direct to Destin (Fla.), so this year we went there. We flew right there and Uber’d straight to the resort and never left until it was time to come home. What’s it like to be back in Sand Springs and coaching in the town that you grew up? It’s great because I get to be close to family, and that’s what it’s all about. Being close to family is always the most important thing. Who is the most dynamic athlete you’ve coached while at Sand Springs? Michael Bowie has a Super Bowl ring, and he’s the only one I’ve gotten to the NFL. Even though there have been so many, I’ll go with him.

CPHS Cheer team seeks to become National Champions
C
PHS Cheer competed at the National Cheerleaders Association High School Nationals contest in Dallas in January and came home as the National Runner-Up in the Intermediate Co-ed Performance Division. In addition to our second place finish, we were awarded for the best use of jumps and the best use of jumps in our entire division. The team is excited about the upcoming season and we want to build on the success we had at Nationals. We are preparing this year to bring out the best possible routine we can, so that we can come home as National Champions this year. As always we cannot wait for football and basketball season, so we can cheer on our Sandite football and basketball teams to victory. Head Cheer Coach Carrie Schlehuber

T
he Charles Page High School Gold Pride Band is going for a patriotic theme for their show this year after a more extravagant, carnivalthemed show in 2018-2019. The band started practicing August 1. They will perform at Meet the Sandites August 22 and at the Homecoming Parade September 26. The marching band is preparing for a marching band contest September 28 at East Central University In Ada, another contest October 12 in Branson and the Oklahoma
Secondary School Activities Association Marching Band Contest October 30. Drum Major Alyssa Crutcher said last year’s show was successful despite missing some events, like the Tulsa Veterans Day Parade and the Sand Springs Christmas Parade, because of weather. “We had a lot of visuals,” Crutcher said of last year’s carnival-themed show. “We’d never had a pre-show before…It was an experimental year.” Rachel Snyder
