GREATER TULSA HOME & GARDEN SHOW OFFICIAL GUIDE Wednesday, March 6, 2019 7
70th anniversary sponsor has long history with the Tulsa Home & Garden Show The Womble Company, which has been involved with the Greater Tulsa Home & Garden Show for many years, is this year’s 70th anniversary sponsor. “Although we’re unsure of the exact amount of time we’ve participated, we have many employees who have been with the company for 20+ years who remember participating in this premier event,” said Andy Crum, CEO/owner of The Womble Company. Originally created to supply hardware and building supplies, The Womble Company has partnered with many well-known brands over the years with the sole purpose of providing quality building products alongside
industry-leading service to many of the best builders in Tulsa and surrounding communities. In 1974, the company welcomed a new partnership with Pella Corporation to provide the best window and door products in the fenestration industry. Entering their 45th year of that partnership, Pella and The Womble Company continue to
provide industry-leading innovation, materials and service that is second to none. The Womble Company is proud to serve as the show’s 70th anniversary sponsor. “Having participated in home show events throughout Oklahoma and beyond, we find that Tulsa’s Home & Garden Show continues to set a high standard for special show themes and high attendance,” Crum said. “From large sand castle structures to ‘walking trees’ on stilts, the show has always represented a unique opportunity for suppliers and builders alike to showcase their products in a fun, interactive environment,” he added.
Show your home some love You don’t need to spend a lot of money on new appliances or significant renovations to spruce up your home. Here are a few suggestions: Shed some of that extra weight: You don’t have to wait for spring to roll around to get rid of the junk that may be piling up in your coat closets, basement or garage. Lighten the load throughout your home and it will seem bigger and significantly cleaner. Plus, spring cleaning won’t be nearly as intimidating. Get some sun: Let the sunlight in. Pull back (or take down) the drapes, wash the windows and even swap out dark lampshades for brighter ones to make the inside of your home cheerier. . Scrub it down: Your appliances work hard for you every day so it’s time to give them a thorough cleaning, especially if you haven’t done so recently. Refrigerators especially need a little extra attention on a regular basis. Start by taking everything out, then, be selective about what you put back. Also, check to see if any of your appliances might still be under warranty with a service plan to cover any maintenance that will keep them running smoothly. Spruce it up: One of the most economical updates you can give your home is paint. Whether it’s a bold new color or simply a fresh coat, painting a room or an accent wall can breathe new life into any space. Greater Tulsa Home & Garden Show Celebrates 70 Years
The 1953 Tulsa Home Show opened to eager attendees at 5 p.m. at the Fairgrounds pavilion.
Each year, the Greater Tulsa Home & Garden Show Official Guide provides everything you need to know to make the most of the event.
In March 2019, the Home Builders Association of Greater Tulsa (HBA) celebrates the 70th anniversary of its inaugural Home Show. Tulsa homebuilders modeled the home show after the National Association of Home Builders’ 1944 Convention and Exposition — the first of what would eventually become the NAHB’s International Builders’ Show — held in Chicago featuring 94 homebuilding exhibits. Tulsa’s 1949 Home Show was held at a skating arena located at 11th Street and Norfolk Avenue. Vernon L. Mudd, a local builder and developer, was the 1949 HBA president and the Show’s first chairman. The home show was organized to complement the Association’s 1947 Model Homes Show, one of the first new home showcase events in the nation and the forerunner of today’s Parade of Homes. The first Model Homes Show featured seven homes on a single site in the 700 block of South Sandusky Avenue. Following WWII, Tulsa remained well-positioned as the Oil Capital of the World and was poised for a residential building boom fueled by the nation’s post-war economy. In 1950, a Tulsa World headline read “Tulsa Leading Nation in New Homebuilding” as the increase of housing activity as a whole in the Tulsa area for the previous year was greater than that on a national scale. This fact was confirmed when in 1949 the number of Home Show visitors overwhelmed the skating rink’s capacity. In 1950 and 1951, the Home Show moved to the much larger Tulsa Coliseum, an indoor arena at the corner of Fifth Street and Elgin Avenue. When the Coliseum was struck by lightning and destroyed by fire prior to the 1952 show, the Home Show relocated to the Pavilion arena at the Tulsa Fairgrounds. Opportunities for homeownership existed like never before. However, television was changing American life in the 1950s. Competition for customer attention was fierce, so Tulsa’s Home Show began featuring a large number of live performers during the run of the show which when combined with appealing exhibits attracted well over 100,000 visitors with the Show closing at 11:00 pm. In the 1950s, the Tulsa World was a vital media partner publishing a special Home Show Section on opening day that not only provided the public with information about the Show’s programs and events, but informative and entertaining reporting about the homebuilding business from builder jargon to regulations, and from city beautification programs to do-ityourself household tips. With the passage of time, the Home and Garden Show evolved to align with changing consumer tastes and preferences. Gone were the live performers and Miss Tulsa Home Show competitions. By the time the Tulsa Home & Garden Show was held in 1979, exhibit space had more than doubled from 46,000 to 100,000 square feet in the Tulsa Exposition Building (today known as River Spirit Expo). Today, it’s the eagerly anticipated one-stop home and garden event that defines spring.
Ramon King, above, served as MC at the 1963 Home Show in the Fairgrounds Education Building. Vernon L. Mudd, right, a local builder and developer, was the 1949 HBA president and the Show’s first chairman.
A 1952 Tulsa World Home Show Section shines the spotlight on Home Show exhibits and entertainment, including Art Linkletter.

Arvest Bank is platinum sponsor of the 70th Tulsa Home and Garden Show “Over the past 70 years, the beginning of spring in Tulsa has come to mean the Greater Tulsa Home and Garden Show. The days are starting to get warmer, flowers are beginning to bloom and people’s creative juices start flowing,” says Chris Hodges, mortgage loan manager with Arvest Bank. Arvest is platinum sponsor of the show this year and has participated in the show since 2009. In fact, this will be their seventh year as platinum sponsor. The Greater Tulsa Home and Garden Show provides a venue for people to shop, explore, dream and get professional advice about all things home and garden. Whether you are a doit-yourselfer or are looking for a professional to handle your next project, you can get all the information you need (including financing) under one roof. “Doing anything at a high level for 70 years is very impressive,” Hodges says. “To have a quality show run by hundreds of volunteers is the icing on the cake. The Greater Tulsa Home and Garden Show is the crown jewel of the Home Builders Association of Tulsa, and a lot of attention is given to the details of the show. As a vendor, a sponsor and an attendee, I am always impressed with how smooth things go.” Hodges touts the Tulsa HBA’s excellent job of adapting the show to today’s consumer while maintaining the integrity of the show. “We are excited for the new stages and entertainment that will be part of the show this year. We have found
that the more we are involved with the show, the more we get out of the show. As the platinum sponsor, we want as many customers to come to the show as possible. The biggest challenge we see is that the home and garden show is now competing for people’s time. People have an abundance of entertainment opportunities in Tulsa and so the show must stand out in order to capture the public’s attention. The show is no longer just about the home and garden in people’s lives. It is becoming more and more about entertainment.” Just like the Tulsa Home and Garden Show, Arvest Bank has experienced a lot of change over the years. Arvest began in 1961 with the purchase of Bank of Bentonville. Over the years there have been several milestones that people might take for granted today. It wasn’t until 1968, for example, that Arvest Bank began offering credit cards, and the bank launched its first Automated Teller Machine (ATM) in 1976. Also, it wasn’t until 1990 that Arvest Bank started operating its networks of banks under the name Arvest. A year later, in 1991, Arvest surpassed $1 billion in total assets. Today total assets exceed $18 billion. Between ‘91 and ‘97, Arvest opened its first in-store branch (like the ones you see inside Walmart), began offering debit cards and launched arvest.com. Of particular interest to some of those who have attended this show over the years, Arvest
established a mortgage servicing unit in 1997 and purchased WACO Title in 1999. Between those two milestones, the company launched its online banking platform. Today, Arvest operates more than 270 branches and serves more than 135 communities throughout Arkansas, Kansas, Missouri and Oklahoma. “The Tulsa Home and Garden Show is a great opportunity for us to be able to interact with our customers, small businesses, builders and families across the area,” Hodges says. “In a time when technological advances offer customers many ways of completing their banking transactions,
nothing will ever replace the handshake and warm smile that Arvest associates are known for. We love hearing from many customers who come by our booth just to say ‘hello’ and let us know ‘Arvest is my bank!’ It is an honor to have such loyal customers and the Tulsa Home and Garden Show gives us an opportunity to tell them ‘thank you.’” Hodges wants the community to know that, while Arvest offers banking apps, mortgage apps, online options, etc., a professional banker will always be ready to assist them in person. In addition, he says it’s important for Arvest Bank to be involved in its com-
munities. “We have many associates who volunteer countless hours each year to make our communities better,” Hodges says. “Being involved in the Tulsa Home and Garden Show is
another example of how we are engaging with our community. The show gives us the unique ability to get in front of 25,000+ people over a four-day period.

In 1989, the Home Builders Association of Greater Tulsa began recognizing builders who made the best use of HBA Associate member companies to complete their homes. The Spirit Award is one of the HBA of Greater Tulsa’s highest honors, as it symbolizes the relationship between the contractor and the subcontractor and how very important it is when building a home to use only qualified craftsmen and suppliers. Each year, many worthy companies enter projects for consideration of this honor, which are then analyzed by an accounting firm to determine which projects involved the greatest percentage of work by HBA Associate members.
Congratulations to
2018 HBA Spirit Award Winner Dana Day Day Build and Design Dana Day, founder of Day Build and Design, was selected as this year’s Spirit Award honoree in recognition of the construction of a 4,591 square-foot modern farmhouse in midtown Tulsa, which was featured in the 2018 Parade of Homes. This custom-built home features unique amenities designed for its homeowners such as a man cave that transitions to an exterior covered porch and a two-level hidden alcove for children’s play. An eclectic blend of hardware and fixtures throughout the home highlights the custom-designed metal fireplace surround and kitchen range Vent-A-Hood. The home received a HERS Index rating of 50 that certified the home’s energy-efficient construction features and provided a substantial energy credit to the homeowners. Day employed 32 HBA Associate member firms on this project and over 40 HBA Associate member businesses on other projects throughout the year. Dana Day has been a member of the Home Builders Association of Greater Tulsa (HBA) for nearly a decade. She currently serves as the 2019 HBA Builders Council vice president/treasurer and is a member of the HBA board of directors. She is a recent mayoral appointee to the City of Tulsa Board of Appeals. Day understands how overwhelming a new construction or remodeling project can be to a homeowner. Her skill and design expertise are the basis for her ability to effectively communicate every decision, from concept to creation, with her customers in order to deliver projects on time and on budget. Day utilizes a construction software program that allows customers to view in real-time their budget, invoices paid, progress photos and more. Day’s commitment to quality craftsmanship, design excellence and high standards allow her to surpass her homeowner’s expectations.
