Preface Dear readers, At the outset, I am privileged to pen foreword for Shekar Ajekar’s biography on Bollywood star Suniel Shetty in English. Its five years ago since my poetry has been published in internet. That was appreciated as the first of it’s kind in history of Kannada literature. Now, it’s the turn of Bollywood star Suniel Shetty’s biography titled ‘Our Own Sunil’ to hit the stands that too in English gives me immense happiness. My aspirations to respond to the new thoughts in IT era get realized in one way or other. When I pondered over to pen a biography of accomplished native of Tulunadu, at once the persona of Suniel Shetty flashed into my mind. He is a native of Tulunadu and his down to earth personality overwhelmed my imagination, since he has become an accomplished Bollywood celebrity. I strongly determined to pursue the personal traits of this great actor Suniel Shetty by interacting with his friends and relatives. Its Suniel Shetty’s birthday on August 11 and on this glorious occasion I was opportune to release my English version of book titled – Our Own Sunil . I had gotten an opportunity to meet Suniel when I was working as a journalist with Mumbai-based Karnataka Malla, Kannada our own sunil................................... 5

Suniel Shetty amicably invited me to meet at the location of movie shooting in a mill, located at Fort in Mumbai. I got a chance to chat with his father Veerappa Shetty and his mother in Tulu. It’s my perspective in life, in order to explore new creativity and innovations in whatever I do. Meanwhile, I decided to try to experiment on the popularity of Bollywood actor Suniel Shetty who is a native of Mulky in Mangalore and loved by his fans across the country. It was my experiment whether Suniel Shetty replies to the letters of his cherished fans. I posted an advertisement asking the readers to send their questions that they want to be replied by Suniel Shetty. I was surprised to receive more than one hundred letters from readers. With this bunch of letters, I approached Suniel Shetty at the movie shooting location. We chat during the intervals of shooting. When the shooting ended on that evening, Suniel Shetty invited me to accompany him in his car to his residence located in a posh area - Alta mount Road, Mumbai. I was privileged to chat with Suniel’s parents. I will cherish our own sunil................................... 6

Suniel was present during the inaugural of Mumbai’s super cop Daya Nayak’s School in the latter’s native village Ennehole in Karkala, a few years ago. Meanwhile, I got a chance to chat with Suniel at this occasion, when he has already made his mark in bollywood. I recalled my first meeting with him as a promising actor a few decades ago. I was stunned to know that Sunil has been humble to his roots and name and fame in tinsel world has not changed him at all.

He identified me in the midst of media persons at the venue, when I presented him with a CD of Tulunadu Paddana titled ‘Paddhana Poomale’ that he willingly accepted with an affectionate smile. Sunil was specially invited to attend the historical Kambala in Moodbidri and I got one more chance to talk to him. MLA Abhayachandra Jain presented a Kambala stick that is generally used by an handler of buffaloes race, in due honour to Bollywood star Suniel Shetty. The cameraman of Akriti Studio clicked his pictures with me also at the occasion. This is for the time being, while I know it very well that I will have no time to rest till my forthcoming book that will be included with some more information.

Suniel arrived in Ujire during Vishwa Tulu Sammelan on the invitation of Dharmadhikari Dr D Veerendra Heggade during 2009. He himself looklike a brand ambassador of Tulunadu earning the love and regards of our own sunil................................... 9

His words on his own films “ I’m as human as the next guy. I lose my temper, abuse and fret when things don’t go my way. I go through all the emotions a normal human being would go through. But I’ve learnt from my mistakes. What you know at 30, you did not know at 20. In terms of script, I wouldn’t say that I have become choosy. If I was, I wouldn’t have messed up the way I have. But I have become choosy in terms of directors. I know that an ordinary script in the hands of a capable director can emerge as a good product, but a good script in the hands of a bad director would look like any other film. I want a great director and an even better producer, so that they can make and market a film well. Take Lagaan for example. It was marketed so well. Besides, the fact that it was a well-made film ensures that it becomes part of history. Though I am smart, I am also a man of commitment. I signed on 45 films the day I came into the industry. I could have taken on better films and walked out of the bad ones, but I would be harming the producers who depending on me. Today, I’m at a stage where I can say no, I can say “Mr X you are a very nice man, but I simply can’t do business with you any more.”

Sunil Shetty quotes # “My image is that of a family man, both on and off screen.”

# “My son does enjoy my action films. But the women in my family would be happier if I did socially relevant films. My mother, like any mother, says, ‘What a lovely film!’ and ‘You have improved!’ Which I know isn’t true.”

# “ I’m more about style than steps. I’m very graceful as a fighter because my honed instincts come into play here. But when it comes to dancing, I’m no good.”

# “Before each shot, I would rehearse it 30, 40 times. See, my producer has selected me for his film, so he also has to take the time and trouble to groom me where I am weak. For action scenes, I don’t need rehearsals or retakes. But for dance, I do rehearse — and the results are showing, which is something I am happy about our own sunil................................... 12

Suniel Shetty — Biggest Loser Jeetega When it came to taking the TV host plunge, could it have been anything but a keep-fit show for apna fighting-fit Anna? Biggest Loser Jeetega, the desi version of the popular American show The Biggest Loser, had macho man Suniel Shetty keeping a check on pounds, lost and gained, by a team of 16 obese hopefuls. During the course of the show’s fourmonth run, most contestants went from 120 kg to less than half that weight. On-the-set love blossomed for many. Shetty lisped half-sentences and chewed gum throughout, but managed little else. USP: Nothing. The participants — most of them were facing the camera for the first time — arrested more

attention than the 100-film veteran Shetty managed. Script: Never known for being much of an actor, Shetty’s anchoring skills could at best be described as average. Given to mouth scripted lines like our own sunil................................... 14

“Aapne iss hafte sirf do kg ghataaye hain,” the pokerfaced action hero did just that — mouth them. Stop. Zero expression. Zero passion. Zero improvisation. Camera comfort: Shetty looked ill at ease. On the days he chose to shake a leg he was disastrous. Look: The slim and trim Shetty was nevertheless a dude. Amid rumours that he possessed a 23-inch waistline (yes, you heard that right!), the Mischief man’s khaki shirts, linen trousers and super-cool glares made quite a fashion statement. Contestant connect: Despite the many hiccups, one thing that came easily to Shetty was the bond that he forged with most contestants. He was the elder brother they went to for advice. “I remember a particular instance when two contestants fell in love during the course of the show. Suniel Shetty supported them throughout,” says mass communication student Ritama Ghosh. Shetty has reportedly offered film roles to some BLJ contestants. Eyeball count: Suniel Shetty didn’t quite interest the audience. The dismal our own sunil...................................15

Sunil & Socialmind By adopting the villages. I believe if the people from big cities take the initiative and start helping the poor guys in the unnourished villages and communities. Only this way we can sort some problems. I believe that instead of sending the relief and aids outside the country, we should help the people in need within the country. I have even told the Home Minister RR Patil that if required, I’ll be the first person to go there and act as a mediator between the two sides as both are our people only.

Interview in detail with Suneil Shetty He went silent for a year but it’s too early to rule out Sunil Shetty. The macho actor who also proved his mettle with comedy will be seen in the upcoming release DADDY COOL followed by a few big ones. The actor speaks to our correspondent on his films. Have you consciously cut down on films? Not really. Yes, I have been doing fewer films but it is because I am too preoccupied with other things at the same time. I also have to take care of my production house and we are doing some really interesting projects. In all I am still busy and as of films, the season has just begun and I have quite a few releases this year. At the same time, you aren’t seen doing too many action films or even serious roles? It’s all about the kind of films being made. I have always believed that an actor should keep changing with the times...evolve with every film and give the best in every role. My last film that released almost a year ago was MUKHBIIR and it was quite a serious role. (Smiles) In fact as you said there are a couple of films where I will be seen doing serious, in fact very serious roles.

our own sunil................................... 17

But it has been more comedy of late? Everyone’s doing comedy but that doesn’t mean I will do as many comedies as possible. Comedies are doing well. I too love doing comedies. When I came to the industry no one thought that I would do comedy or even would fit into that mould but that’s something I have really enjoyed doing over the years. It also depends on the director. If it’s someone like Priyadarshan you know the kind of film he is going to come up with. DADDY COOL is again a comedy? (Laughs) and you will keep laughing once you watch that film. It’s not slapstick but a really humorous one. It’s a very lighthearted film about how a dead body gets exchanged by mistake and the dead man has two sons. I play one of them. It’s a comedy of errors and eventually throughout the film you will find how one situation leads to another. Okay that sounds interesting. But the big news is that you are also doing Priyadarshan’s DE DANA DAN, which is also a comedy. (Smiles) I think the entire country is looking forward to that film. As I said its Priyan Sir’s film and if it’s a comedy you know the kind of film it’s going to be. It’s one of the good films I have done in a long time. I am among one of the three leads.

our own sunil................................... 18

More importantly, the trio of Akshay Kumar, Paresh Rawal and Sunil Shetty makes a comeback. Certainly, that is really what everyone is looking forward to. The last time we three worked together was in HERA PHERI and it became not only a hit but almost a cult classic. It’s after nine years (pauses) and to be very honest we all are excited. I hope the old magic is recreated. That the three of us are back again in one film certainly holds a lot of expectation and it will certainly remind one of the HERA PHERI days. But there were reports that Akshay and you won’t work because of difference of opinions? I don’t know where these reports come from. Whenever we two have worked the films have gone on to become hits... super hits indeed. Be it MOHRA, HERA PHERI, DHADKAN, PHIR HERA PHERI...everything. Is the sequel to HERA PHERI still on? There have been a lot of talks going on.

It will release anytime. (Smiles) and as I said it’s a serious film. It’s a very intense subject and one film that I am proud of.

But it’s quite some time that the film is stuck? See, the time wasn’t right because of recession, then the multiplex strike came in, so everything got delayed. RED ALERT needs to be taken very seriously. It has already done quite well at the festivals. It’s a film on the Naxalite movement and is inspired from a true story. The storyline is very gripping and you will see some really intense moments.

Okay and what about your production house? Oh!! It’s really doing good. We have two very good movies coming up. LOOT is there and then there’s MUMBAI CHAKA CHAK. Both are completely different in taste and style. So I am looking forward to it.

Of course it’s on and I am sure it’s going to rock. Much like DE DANA DAN this one too will be one great film.

And where do we see you next after Daddy Cool?

Okay, what about your much talked about film RED ALERT?

DE DANA DAN releases by the end of the year. There’s another interesting film called AMAR JOSHI SAHEED HO GAYA.

SUNIL FILM DIRECTOR ? As an actor, I don’t want to talk too much about my future films because this industry is such that even after half a film has been complete, it can be shelved. I only want to say that I’ll be working with the best directors. There’s no way I see myself as a director. Direction is far too creative. It’s very easy to put a film together — to get a script and actors — but direction is another matter altogether. That’s why our success ratio is as low as 3 to 5 per cent. Because only 5 per cent of the films are made by genuine directors. I hope that production will be one of the achievements for Popcorn Entertainment, but right now we’re concentrating on stage shows, events and celeb endorsements. The entertainment centre at Powai is also something I’m still putting together. Before, I was running individual centres — Thai Me Up and Astro. But I realised that the energy required for running one centre is as much as the energy required for running ten centres if they are brought together. I’m also planning on opening a huge center in Hyderabad.

our own sunil................................... 23

Family & Success My parents’ contribution to the making of Sunil Shetty, the man has been 100 per cent. I come from a middle class background. My parents are very simple. My wife, Mana has been my backbone for as far as I can remember. I give all the credit to my family.

Devoted Father I need to spend time with them and I realise that. If I didn’t, I’d be an uncle to them and not papa. I spend more time with my children than any other father would. After 7 pm, whenever I’m in town, I’m return home. And I work half days on Saturdays. If I’m abroad, I plan my outdoors according to their holidays. I take at least six to eight weeks off in a year to spend time with them. I don’t think you’d find a more devoted father.

The Business man As a businessman, Sunil Shetty is dumb. His image as a ‘businessman’ is what his partners should have. They deserve all the credit. But I will say that I’m very diplomatic. I don’t take pangas with anybody.

Happy moments

Sunil and Fitness

That Sunil Shetty is mad about fitness is no secret. He is supremely particular about his daily fitness regimen and also about what he eats and drinks. He will soon convert his passion into a business. Well, actually, the process has already started. Anytime Fitness is the name under which the Red Alert actor has started fitness centres in cities like Pune and Hyderabad, and the actor-entrepreneur is keen to set up these centres all over the country so that more and more people can become fitness-conscious. He has appointed a culinary expert as a core member of Anytime Fitness. It would be this expert’s job to recommend the exact menu for each individual depending on the requirements of his/her body. “His philosophy is that each one eats whatever he/ she likes but in the right quantity and without the harmful ingredients in it,” explains Sunil, adding, “If I have eaten idli-dosa all my life, you can’t ask me to suddenly switch my diet. But what you can do is watch over what goes into my idli and dosa.” Sunil feels, housewives, girls and boys will get an expert’s opinion on how they can improve their health and that of their near and dear ones. If all goes well, the actor may strike a deal with the Taj group of hotels for running its kitchens all over the country. Source : our own sunil................................... 35

sunil on naxals Sunil says he strongly condemns the Naxal violence, but he also thinks that the guerrillas are not terrorists. He plays the lead role in movie ‘Red Alert-The War Within’, based on a real story. It is true to say, empathizing with someone is the true measure of their plight. Sunil Shetty is going through something similar now-a-days. He plays the protagonist role in the Movie ‘Red Alert- The War Within’. It is based on a real story. The movie is inspired from the Naxal history and Sunil plays as a famer in the movie. He said “Naxals are often helpless people who have been exploited, their mineral ores seized and their existence threatened. One cannot just eliminate or deal with them harshly because they are our own people and not terrorists.” Sunil further adds “It is quite disheartening that the Naxal violence has taken such shocking proportions. Violence can only result in violence and the Red Belt is bleeding with violence now. The more we try to get out of this complicated situation, the more we get knotted up.” The film is releasing on July 9 and it was screened at the South Asian International Film Festival (SAIFF). Sunil was also honored with the best actor award. The movie is shot and dubbed in four languages- English, Hindi, Telegu and Chattisgarhi. The movie will also be dubbed in Bengali. our own sunil................................... 37
