n 1951, Te Roopu Wahine Māori Toko I Te Ora (The
Māori Women’s Welfare League – MWWL) came into
existence in response to the desire of Māori women around the motu for an organisation that would: •
Give Māori women a voice to address the needs of

Provide support for the understanding and retention of Te Reo Māori, Māori traditions and handcrafts. MWWL was established under the leadership of Whina Cooper

as we work together to achieve the aims and objectives of the MWWL.
