WILD

CAMPING IN EUROPE w e i v r e v o an

W

e love nothing more than heading off the beaten track to a remote area, setting up a wild camp and switching off from the outside world for a couple of days. Not only is it an inexpensive way to spend your well earned free time while enjoying the surrounding natural environment but science also tells us that it is also very good for us. In modern times our daily lives have become more stressful with increased financial pressures, work deadlines, and now with the everyday use of modern technology like phones, ipads etc we never seem to be able to switch off. Well the good news is that there are ways to break from this cycle every now and then. Now this does not mean we should all throw yoga mats into the back of our 4WD’ and head for Tibet, not that there’s anything wrong with that, it basically just requires us to make time every now and then to head off for a couple of days camping and leave our devices at home. We also now know from the research that when we sleep outside, without electricity and artificial light our bodies begin to sync with the cycles of the sun and this effectively resets our body clocks to their natural circadian rhythm and releases the happy

hormone melatonin which contributes to better health overall. Research also shows that artificial light and modern gadgets like phones, TV’s, IPADS etc are responsible for us staying up later and as a result interferes with the natural light-dark cycle that throughout the evolution of the human race began at sunrise and ended just after sunset. We are all familiar with those beaming lights from our phones as we check out what’s going on in the cyber world just before we fall asleep. It has been well documented that these late sleep patterns can lead to unwanted weight gain, mood problems, morning sleepiness and the list goes on.

The TURA S team lo ve find n ew wild cam ps

The team at TURAS don’t need much convincing to pack up our 4WD’s and head off for a few days camping leaving the laptops and other distractions behind and we can totally relate to some of these findings. It doesn’t take a genius to realise that a week wild camping makes you feel more connected with your surrounding environment. From a social perspective, wild camping with your family and friends is also a great way to reconnect and enjoy each others company, no fighting over the TV controls or staring into screens. Both the kids and adults love sitting around the fire toasting marshmallows and having good cheerful conversation with no distractions. Unfortunately, we can’t always just pack up and camp any-

where we choose. Each country throughout Europe and beyond have different laws when it comes to wild camping and driving in remote areas and all of these laws should be respected. As pressure on our landscapes from recreational use continues to increase it is now as important as ever for us all to abide by the Leave No Place principles. It goes without saying that the vast majority of tourers and campers do respect their environment but unfortunately we will also have a minority who do not and give us all a bad name. So now that we have established that wild camping is good for us, the next question is which countries can we explore and wild camp legally in and enjoy this worthwhile and rejuvenating

experience. Lets have a look at a few of them.

BRITISH ISLES

In the British Isles and the Republic of Ireland the laws around wild camping seem to vary in each jurisdiction with some being more liberal than others. Generally in England, Scotland and Wales all of the land is privately owned and you require permission to wild camp. In Scotland the well developed Outdoor Access Code provides detailed guidance on the responsibilities of those exercising access rights for non-motorised recreation. In England and Wales wild camping seems to be tolerated for hikers in many upland and remote areas, particularly in Snowdonia, the Dartmoor and

the Lake District but the vast majority of the land including National Parks is privately owned and therefore generally requires permission from someone to wild camp. So unlike places like Australia the right to wild camp with your vehicle is somewhat limited.

IRELAND

In Ireland, wild camping is not strictly legal but does seem to be tolerated in many remote areas .Similar to Scotland Ireland is sparsely populated with plenty of remote areas to explore particularly along the west coast. The key consideration is to leave no trace and respect the areas that you camp in. If you want to camp on private land you

should always ask for permission. Coillte the agency for managing forests in Ireland have a camping code in place which highlights the do’s o and don’ts when accessing forests. The Housing (miscellaneous provisions) Act grants powers to landowners to have the police remove unauthorised campers. but it is likely that such legislation will only be acted on to deal with campers who are, in effect, living in the forest and will not apply to casual or recreational campers..Camping is currently permitted in some of the Irish national parks provided you adhere to the Leave no Trace Codes.

Norway

Iceland

ICELAND &

NORWAY

NORWAY

Norway lies between latitudes 57° and 81° N, and longitudes 4° and 32° E. Much of the country is dominated by mountainous terrain, with a great variety of natural features caused by glaciers during the last ice age. The west coast of southern Norway and the coast of northern Norway present some of the most visually impressive coastal sceneries in the world with National Geographic naming the Norwegian fjords as the world’s top tourist attraction. Norway has excellent laws when it comes to wild camping having one of the most liberal public-access laws in Europe allowing you to wild camp without any worries for a couple of days on uncultivated land. Wild camping in Norway is enshrined in the Allemannsretten which is basically every man or woman’s right of public access.

ICELAND

Iceland is situated at the confluence of the North Atlantic and Arctic Oceans is a country with a total area of 103,000 squared kilometres, with a population of only 320,000 people, which makes it the most sparsely populated Country in Europe. Most inhabitants live near the coastline with the interior containing mostly sand and lava fields, mountains, glaciers and volcanoes. There are around 170 registered campsites in Iceland, usually open from the beginning of June until late August or mid-September. Many visitors come to Iceland to experience the pure, clean and untouched environment. Responsible camping allows you to enjoy Iceland in its purest form, and depends on campers respecting nature and minimizing their impact on the area they are camping in.

BELGIUM

Icelandic nature preservation law dictates where you are allowed to camp in Iceland if you find yourself away from registered campsites. In residential areas, d in Icelan g you are allowed to pitch up n i p m Wild ca to three camping tents in uncultivated land for one night only if there is no campsite in the area. If you wish to camp on cultivated land or near residential buildings, fenced off farmland, or such, you have to ask permission from a landowner or other beneficiary before you pitch up the camping tent. The same rule applies if you intend to stay longer than one night. You are not allowed to camp on farmland without permission. In the highlands, you have permission to pitch up camping tents. This applies only to a regular camping tent. Mobile campers must always seek permission from landowners or other beneficiaries before camping, whether in a residential area, on uncultivated land or in the highlands. In general, wild camping is tolerated if you find yourself away from registered campsites, from the point of view of exploring with your 4WD you most follow the existing tracks.

BELGIUM

Wild camping is generally prohibited in Belgium if you pitch your tent in a designated area called a Bivak Zone. Bivak Zones are designated wild camping sites that offer basic facilities. You can pitch your tent and stay at these sites for a limited time. In the Flanders it is allowed to stay for a maximum of two days. There are approximately forty Bivak Zones in Belgium the basic comforts include water pumps, a wooden tent

platform, a fire pit, though this is not the case for all bivak zones. Be sure to use the fire pits available.

PORTUGAL

Portuguese legislation determines that overnight stays and camping outside the permitted places (camping and caravaning sites) is not permitted and is subject to the authorisation from the authorities and the land owners. Portugal has an extensive network of good quality campsites, many of them located in places of rare beauty where you can be in full communion with nature. So, if you don’t want to risk being awakened by the authorities and go home with a much lighter wallet, we recommend that you plan your trip in advance, stay only in legal campsites and choose the ones that best fit your itinerary. During the summer season, Portugal is historically affected by numerous forest fires. During the critical period that normally goes from June to September, the authorities will limit or even prohibit certain activities such as the circulation of vehicles, barbecues and picnics in rural and forest areas, depending on the level of risk. In this case, the right thing is simply to avoid the forest areas, follow the indications from the authorities and take the preventive measures that are in your reach, such as not smoking or making fire. If during a trip to Portugal you feel like doing a barbecue outside the authorised places (campsites or picnic areas identified as such), be aware that this is subject to permission from the local authorities Driving off-road (excluding or-

ganised tours or events) is generally permitted in public unpaved roads and lanes where the highway code is applicable. Access to or driving through private property is forbidden without permission from the owners Inside nature parks and other legally protected areas including Natura 2000 areas, driving off-road is subject to permits and permissions from the Institute of Nature Conservation and Forests (www.icnf.pt). Each protected area has its own regulation which sets the requirements

for the authorisation of recreational activities, including driving off-road.Driving on beaches, sand dunes, cliffs and other protected areas along the coast is prohibited by law and is subject to heavy fines. For the regulations about off-road tours, wild camping and forest fires, I suggest you take a look at the very informative Dream Overland website http://www.dreamoverland.com/en/letra-da-lei .

FRANCE &

SWEDEN

FRANCE

Wild camping translated as “le camping sauvage” is generally illegal in France under Article R11133 and R111-34 but it is not all doom and gloom as this law also states that “These prohibitions are enforceable only if they have been made public by posting in town halls and by placing signs at the usual access points to the areas covered by these prohibitions’’. It is discouraged to wild camp along the coastline and in protected areas. Of course you can wild camp

if you get permission so best advice is that if you are not sure to always ask for permission.

SWEDEN

In Sweden the wild camping laws are similar to those in Norway and are very liberal and welcoming to wild campers. The Right of Public Access (‘Allemansrätt’), or Outdoor Access Rights gives you the right to roam the countryside in Sweden in perfect peace and quiet. When you are in Sweden you

have the right to walk, cycle, ride, ski and camp on any land with the exception of private gardens, near a dwelling house or land under cultivation. We call it the Freedom to Roam. In Sweden the Right of Public Access is a unique right to roam freely in the countryside but with this right comes responsibilities to respect nature and wildlife and to show consideration for landowners and for other people enjoying the countryside. The Swedish Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) sums up the Right of Public Access in the phrase ‘Don’t disturb – Don’t destroy.’ You may pitch your tent for a night or two in the countryside as long as you don’t disturb the landowner or cause damage to nature

GERMANY & AUSTRIA

Wild camping in Germany is illegal, you can stay at a designated bivouac site for one night but this normally does not allow you to park up with a vehicle. Of course if you ask for permission to camp on private lands well that’s a different story.

CROATIA

Despite people’s perceptions wild camping is not allowed in Croatia and you only should camp in designated camping sites and areas. Camping outside legal campsites is forbidden and you can be penalised for it – currently anyone caught passing a night or two in a vehicle

or tent in unregulated and free-from-charge locations, can be fined. This kind of activity is regulated by Croatian Tourism Act issued by Croatian Ministry of Tourism.Tourism is very important in Croatia and for obvious reasons the Government and the locals would prefer if you stayed in registered campsites.

THE BALKANS (IN GENERAL)

The Balkans, or the Balkan Peninsula as it is known covers an area in Eastern and southeastern Europe with a number of borders dividing the region. The area takes its name from the Balkan Mountains that stretches from the Serbian-Bulgarian border to the Black Sea. The region is a four wheel drivers and wild campers paradise with the peninsula making up a combined area of approximately 470,000km squared or 181,000 square miles, making the area just slightly smaller than Spain. In the Balkans you will experience without much issue wild camping in some spectacular places deep in the wilds and at various altitudes, from forests to open grassland to the top of mountain ranges and along river beds you will be spoiled for choice. Having had a number of contributions from Alek Veljković who is the Overland Expedition Manager for Rustika Travel in recent issues, they have informed us that they are very fortunate to have access to over 150.000 km of tracks throughout the

Balkans region, with these tracks offering various levels of difficulties to 4WD enthusiasts. As regards wild camping Alek highlighted that you can pretty much camp anywhere in the Balkans ,’’it’s an oasis of freedom from an overlanders perspective’’. Alek said that they have good relations with many national parks which allows them to also camp in the national parks.

ALBANIA

Another 4WD and campers paradise, Albania is located in the south-western part of the Balkans, bordered by the Adriatic and Ionian Sea. Divided into three regions that include the Coastal, North-eastern and South/Eastern part of the country. In the North Eastern part of Albania the inland region to the north of the Shkumbin River, borders Montenegro, Kosovo and Macedonia where as in the south eastern part of the inland region to the south of the Shkumbin River borders Macedonia and Greece, this region includes the great border lakes, Lake Ohrid and Lake Prespa. The Coastal Region borders both the Adriatic Sea and the Ionian Sea and the country as a whole offers some incredible wild camping locations.

As 4WD owners and people who love exploring remote areas and finding that perfect campsite it is very important that we are seen to protect and respect these laws and their environments and always take out what we take in. Every country throughout Europe and beyond have different laws when it comes to wild camping and driving in remote areas and all of these laws should be respected. As pressure on our landscapes from recreational use continues to increase it is now as important as ever for us all to abide by the Leave No Place principles. It goes without saying that the vast majority of tourers and campers do respect their environment but unfortunately we will also have a minority who do not and give us all a bad name. With that said there is still plenty of scope to find that perfect wild camping location and you could certainly spend well over a lifetime discovering some of them all over Europe.

THE

EVOLUTION OF THE

SWAG

S

wags have evolved significantly over the years, from very humble designs to some very innovative options that come in all shapes and sizes. Thankfully you can now find these camping products on roof racks and in the back of 4WD vehicles as a result of recent availability, all over the world. So, where did it all begin? Way back in the 1800’s in Australia a Swagman was known as a roaming and mostly seasonal agricultural worker who did odd jobs on farms including labour work, rounding up and shearing sheep. They mostly slept outdoors where they lay

on a piece of canvas and threw a blanket over themselves at night, to keep warm. When they moved on, they then rolled up the blanket, their belongings and the canvas together, threw it on their backs, and headed off for the next job, and that’s where the name for modern day ‘swags’ came from. During the great Depression in Australia swags became even more popular as unemployed men made their way across the Australian continent in search of work and mostly slept in swags. When these men found work, in a lot of cases, their swags would still remain their shelter for the night, that with a billy (tin can for cooking), some clothes and personal belongings, that was

pretty much it. Today, swags are still very popular in Australia where campers and tourers store them in the back of their utes or on the roof rack of their 4x4 as they explore and search for the best campsites. In Europe and in the US the swag concept is still a very new one and one that we are still trying to understand. The first thing we think of when we see a swag is the size in comparison to a tent but having used both over the years the TURAS team soon recognised the benefits of using a swag. In fact, our swags are now our first choice of ac-

commodation when not using our roof top tents. And now, thanks to Australian companies like DARCHE we are getting to see swags up close in the British Isles, Europe and the US as DARCHE swags are now available through various distributors world-wide. the DARCHE swag range keep you comfortable all year round, no matter where you camp. Based in regional Victoria over 26 years ago, DARCHE revolutionised the traditional swag market with the introduction of some very innovative models. DARREN O’DWYER, the founder of DARCHE with his wife CHERYL (DAR-CHE), embarked on an eastern seaboard journey. Wanting a shelter arrangement that was quick, practical and easy to stow, Darren used his imagination and created a canvas shell with fibreglass poles and the dome style swag was born with his creation being the talking point at many camping spots throughout their journey. On

his return, Darren decided to showcase his new creation at a hunting and firearm show held at the Melbourne Exhibition Building. Using nothing more than a simplistic foldable card playing table as a prop, Darren soon become inundated with order requests from both Hunters and campers alike. Using Australian supply chain partners at the time including Bradmill, Charles Parsons (who now own the DARCHE brand), KS Textiles and ABC foam makers, DARCHE had become the leading swag and canvas converter in Australia, at one stage being the largest converter of 100% cotton canvas in the country.

Types of Swags

With interesting and progressive designs like the Dirty Dee, the Dusk To Dawn and the Nebula now all available in the UK, Europe and the US, these DARCHE swags are feature packed with proofed poly/cotton ripstop canvas, heavy duty waterproof PVC bucket floor and 50mm high-density covered foam mattress, that sure is a big improvement when it comes to comfort in comparison to the first prototypes.. So, lets have a closer look at these models;

The Dirty Dee

We have been using the DARCHE Dirty Dee for over a year now and we have had plenty of opportunity to use it in different environments and weather including -15 in the winter months. This innovative design offers a multitude of doors and windows which provide plenty of ventilation on those hot summer camping nights. The ridge pole trigger locking system developed by DARCHE makes the Dirty Dee swag the ultimate freestanding tourer. Near vertical walls and

all-weather awnings, functionality, durability and comfort have been combined into an allround outdoor adventure companion. This roomy swag is made from 420gsm proofed poly/cotton 16mm grid ripstop and offers generous headroom within.Other features include access to the undercover front awning, seam sealed internal seams, 4 internal storage pockets and anodised 7001 alloy 8.5 Dia poles with hard wearing polesleeves. Like all DARCHE products, the materials are all of a very high quality. The carrier bag is a generous size and easily accommodates the swag when packing away. A big selling point for us was the 50mm covered hi-density foam mattress and the trigger locking ridgepole system. The thick mattress means you will be guaranteed a comfortable night’s sleep having said that the size of the mattress does make the swag bulkier but well worth it in our view. The trigger locking system is a great idea allowing the swag to stand freely without needing to use the supplied guy ropes. This is a great solution for those who enjoy a bit of comfort when camping. All up perfect for extended 4WD touring or a quick weekend of camping getaways.

In general ff you can get over the size of a swag in comparison to a tent and get used to throwing them onto your roof rack, in the back of your trailer or in the back of your pick up, you will never look back. The comfort these products offer in our opinion far outweigh the extra space they take up. We have had too many nights of poor sleep crashing out in tents on hard ground and as we get a bit older these swags just bring a whole new dimension to our camping. You will feel very comfortable sheltering in these on a rainy night, in a snowstorm or on a hot summer night with the options of just closing the midget mesh and enjoying the panoramic views. Add a stretcher into the mix by placing your swag on it and in our view this set up is pretty hard to beat when it comes to comfort, in fact this set up in our view offers one of the most comfortable night’s sleep we have ever had.

We’ve just recently returned from a camping trip in the woods where we took the swags and a couple of stretchers to test their comfortability. This was the first time that we tried the swags on the stretchers and after the first night’s experience we all unanimously agreed that it was one of the most comfortable nights of sleep we’ve ever had in the great outdoors. We had often heard how comfortable this combo is and we were pretty much blown away. They have been doing this in Australia for years and it’s a relatively novel way to camp in Europe. We are used to inflatable mattresses or sleeping mats mainly due to the fact that they do not take up much room in our vehicles. Our view is that if you have the room to store a swag and a stretcher on your roof rack or in the back of your

vehicle, then it’s definitely a worthwhile option. Some of the benefits experienced by us included being raised off the ground, this gives you easy access to your sleeping quarters but also it makes it a breeze to take off your shoes or get access to your clothes and items from your travel bag before you go to bed. Also, for those of you who like to have a couple of beers around the campfire before you go to bed, leaving the swag in the middle of the night when nature calls is no longer a big deal, no more crawling out of the tent and trying to put your shoes on at ground level. Being off the ground also means that you do not have to worry about camping on a damp and muddy ground which most of us have experienced, not sure which is worse being cold from

ags eeping b l s of e g CHE ran retchers The DAR ned to fit the st g . are desi perfectly s g a w s and

QUICK SET UP the dampness or getting your gear ruined with the mud. Comfort is also a big plus, with new designs and huge improvements in the materials now being used in stretchers they are a much more comfortable option, with some products like the DARCHE XL-100 ULTRA offering padding and extra luxury. Being raised off the ground also means that you don’t have to worry about lying on rocks or protrusions from the ground, this makes it easier to have a level pitch which is a big plus. And lastly, the improvements

in design make these bigger stretchers more manageable when it comes to transportation and packing away with the improved quality in the materials used, they can be placed on your roof rack and away you go. The cross leg system allows you to open and close these stretchers very quickly On the down side the larger ones can be a bit bulky and heavy but if you have the space on your roof rack, in your vehicle or in your camper trailer, this should not be an issue as

most models fold down neatly. Other than that, we can’t really find any negatives, we have missed out on this type of camping over the years and certainly will be making up for it on future trips where the swags and the stretchers will now be one of our main setups. The stretchers you see here are the DARCHE XL-100 ULTRA and the XL-100

The XL-100 ULTRA is ground-hugging in design, quick to set up and easily converted into a comfortable stretcher. High quality, the XL-100 ULTRA is constructed with a robust steel and alloy black frame, durable 600D poly fabric and comes with a convenient carry bag.

IRA EXPLORING

AN

IRAN

k o o l r e s o l c A As highlighted by the Lonely Planet Iran could be the friendliest country on earth but also the jewel in Islam’s crown, combining glorious architecture with a warm-hearted welcome. The term Iran derives directly from Middle Persian Eran , the country is home to one of the world’s oldest civilizations and boasts a history of a variety of ethnic groups that include the Arabs, Greeks, Turks and Mongolese who over the centuries occupied this ancient land. Iran is the second largest country in the Middle East with a land mass covering over 1,648,195 km2 (636,372 sq miles), there are plenty of places to explore. With a population of over 81 million inhabitants, this diverse country, in terms of history and culture, is often described by travellers and overlanders who have explored this ancient land as place where its people are very welcoming. The country is bordered by Armenia, the Republic of Azerbaijan, Turkmenistan, Afghanistan and Pakistan, Turkey and Iraq to the south by the Persian Gulf and the Gulf

of Oman. Tehran the country’s largest city is also the main economic and cultural center. Iran is one of the world’s most mountainous countries, its landscape dominated by rugged mountain ranges that separate various basins and plateaus from each other. Iran’s highest mountain Mount Damavand, stands at an impressive 5,610 m (18,406 ft). But it’s not all mountains in the north of Iran, the country is covered by lush lowland Caspian Hyrcanian mixed forests. The eastern part consists mostly of desert basins, such as the Kavir Desert, which is the country’s largest desert, and the Lut Desert, as well as some spectacular salt lakes.Being such a large country Iran has 11 climates ranging from arid and semi-arid, subtropical along the Caspian coast and the northern forests, in the Zagros basin you will experience lower temperatures, severe winters with below zero average daily temperatures and heavy snowfall with the eastern and central basins being arid. We recently caught up with Saman Kashani and his team from Road IRAN at the Abenteuer and Allrad show in Germany to discuss what Iran has to offer in terms of Offroad-Adventure tours through the deserts, mountains and forests.Saman informs us that in order to get to know Iran in all its facets, you just need an open mind and be ready to enjoy a once in a lifetime experience. Road Iran offer you the opportunity to discover the country either as a self-driver, passenger, or with a rental 4WD vehicle. These guys offer an unforgettable

experience, away from the popular tourist destination. Saman explained that the routes used showcase Iran’s’ natural and cultural highlights where you will experience breathtaking landscape and the Persian culture with all its social and historical facets up close.

Saman also explained that Road Iran is committed to sustainable and authentic travel that will take you on a unique adventure, having established sustainable partnerships with local communities they ensure a culturally sensitive and authentic experience. One of Saman’s key objectives under the Road Iran banner is to foster an intercultural understanding between the locals and the participating tourers. But this is just part of the experience, it’s all about experiencing IRAN and all its wonders from behind the wheel of a 4WD vehicle. The Lut Desert is definitely one of our tour highlights explains Saman. It is a large salt desert located in the provinces of Ker-

man and Sistan and Baluchestan, this area is also a UNESCO World Nature Heritage , covering over 166,000 km² (64092 miles²) making it the largest desert in Iran. It gets pretty hot there, in fact seven years of satellite temperature data show that the Lut Desert in Iran is the hottest spot on Earth reaching a whopping 70.7°C (159.3°F) in 2005. It is also one of the driest places on the planet so it is understandable that even Nomads bypass this place of endless vastness. Inside the Lut-Desert, Road Iran will drive and guide you through the Yardang Mountains with their fascinating rock formations of sand, this is like driving on another planet. Shaped by natural wind work, the Yardangs are lined up perfectly and frame their way into the next part of the journey. After experiencing the hard and rocky tracks in the mountains, the Yalan area provides a different and much softer perspective. Here you will get to experience

a classic and unique desert environment. The dunes reach a spectacular 400 meters offering incredible vistas and iconic photo opportunities. After reaching this part of the trip Road Iran will set up camp here for a couple of days where you will experience pristine and unpolluted starlit skies. From the very north to the south, there is an average temperature difference of 35 °C (95 °F). So there are extremely hot and cold places to be explored around the country. However Saman pointed out that travelling during the spring or autumn will avoid extreme weathers, making your trip much more comfortable. ‘’Iran is far from a land of just drought but also incorporates breathtaking lush forests and wetlands’’. Another interesting destination is the “Hyrcanian Forest”, also known as the “Caspian Forest”, this is the country’s largest humid forest.

It is also Iran’s oldest national park and boasts 150 different species of birds that can be found here, including the rather rare bearded vulture.

Mammals such as brown bears, leopards, wolves, gazelles, sheep and jackals also call this forest home. If you are lucky, you might even see one of the very last and endangered Persian cheetahs. Tigers once roamed this forest but are now unfortunately are now extinct.

Another highlight in Iran is the Maharloo Lake, also known as Pink Lake, this is a seasonal salt lake in the highlands of the area of Shiraz, the lakes salt is rich in potassium and other salts. For those of you who are wine drinkers you will definitely have heard of Shiraz, and it’s interest-

ing to note that wine was being produced in Iran for thousands of years with a focal point of production in the ancient city of Shiraz. The lake water in the area typically evaporates by the end of summer and exposes the spectacular white lake bed. By mid-summer and due to high evaporation rates and salt

concentrations, the lake water turns pinkish red as a result of the red tide within the lake. Another area explored that offers another contrasting environment is Dizin, this is the largest ski resort in Asia. It is located in the Alborz mountain range, about just 70km north of Tehran, Iran’s cap-

ital city. It was established during the 1960s under the reign of Mohammad Reza Pahlavi. Dizin is the first ski and winter sport resort in Iran which has been officially recognized and granted the title by the International Ski Federation for its capability in administering official and international compe-

titions. The highest ski lift reaches 3,600 m (11,800 ft), making it one of the 40 highest ski resorts in the world. Moving on to Lake Urmiawhich is a spectacular endorheic salt lake located between the provinces of East Azerbaijan and West Azerbaijan in Iran, and west of the southern portion of the Caspian Sea. It is one of the largest lakes in the Middle East and the sixth-largest saltwater lake on Earth, with a surface area of approximately 5,200 km2 (2,000 sq mi), a length of 140 km (87 mi), a width of 55 km (34 mi), and a maximum depth of 16 m (52 ft).In recent years the lake has shrunk in size due to damming of the rivers that flow into it, and the pumping of groundwater from the surrounding area. But new projects between the Iranian government and UNESCO are improving the situation. Lake Urmia has approximately 102 islands and is now protected as a national park by the Iranian Department of Environment. Other areas of interest include Naqsh-e Jahan Square, also known as Meidan Emam, this is a square situated at the center of Isfahan, Iran. Constructed between 1598 and 1629, it is now an important historical site, and one of UNESCO’s World Heritage Sites. The Allahverdi Khan Bridge, popularly known as Si-o-se-pol (bridge of thirty-three spans), is the largest of the

eleven historical bridges on the Zayanderud, the largest river of the Iranian Plateau, in Isfahan, Iran. Persepolis which was the ceremonial capital of the Achaemenid Empire (ca. 550–330 BCE). and the Daryacheh ye Namaki which is the second biggest salt lake in Iran. The salt is the main stoke for the Iranian public. Saman highlighted that all participating off-road vehicles being either your own one or a rented one should be carefully prepared, but don’t need to be hard core off road vehicles . Desert

compatibility is an advantage so this should be taken into consideration when preparing you vehicle also to get the most out of this trip, you should be willing to engage with other cultures and people. All up this sounds like an incredible touring experience.

Desert Driving‌. things to consider. Tyres: Make sure that you have good tyres and that they are at the right pressure depending on the terrain. Hot temperatures

DOWN BY THE

RIVER with the Rocket Stove

W

e recently got a chance to head down river to test a few products one of which included the Petromax Rocket Stove. Like all Petromax products this is of a very high quality and perfect for cooking with on this type of a camping trip. The German based Petromax really do deliver on producing quality products and the Petromax Rocket Stove rf33 ticks all of the boxes when it comes to functionality and durability and it also just happens to look the business. The stove effectively uses a wood boiler principle where wood is stacked as it is fed into the chamber, this process achieves an extremely efficient combustion of biomass thanks to the stoves design which facilitates optimal air supply. The simple L-shaped design of the fuel support allows fuel be it wood, bark, twigs, cones or any sources of natural fuel that may be lying about or near your campsite to be stacked up and fed into the stove . In the combustion chamber the heat is limited to a small space which is protected by the isolated housing. The heat escaping from the vent is then captured in the cast-iron top, providing optimal heat to cook your favorite camp meal, the escaping flames from the funnel are also a great way to cook your meats and vegetables, just like you would cook a stir fry at home over a gas flame. Before using the stove for the first time make sure you attach the supplied handles securely. Also when using the stove always make sure you place it on a sturdy surface, remember it needs to be sturdy enough to hold a cast iron pot or

On this trip we cooked up a tasty indian dish and we were very impressed on how intense the heat can get from the funnel, of course you can control this by increasing or decreasing the amount of fuel that you are feeding into the stove. INDIAN

CURRY

W

e recently cooked up an Indian dish on the Rocket Stove, it probably was not in the league of a five star Indian restaurant or in fact any good Indian restaurant for that matter but it certainly tasted better than simple old baked beans. First up we cheated a little by bringing an Indian sauce but we did add some of our own fresh ingredients and it did taste the business. With the Rocket Stove at hand we were able to cook and tasty

Indian curry that by any camp grub standard certainly held its own. With chicken fillets all copped up, garlic, onions, chilies, turmeric and some garam masala served up with some Indian curry sauce and boil in a bag rice, we were more than pleased with our end result..

to explore the world. Before the year 2000 Francoise did not know much about the 4x4 and offroad world. She was working in a senior marketing position for a fast moving consumer goods company but was dissatisfied with this work and seeking a change of scene.

Francoise grew up in Alsace close to the German border. But from an early age she felt that she would not remain in Alsace When she first learned about and had a yearning to travel and the off road pastime and the in-

FOR YEARS THE WHEREABOUTS OF THIS LAND ROVER WAS A MYSTERY dustry it was through her ex-husband George who is now an owner of Euro4x4parts. George suggested starting a company in the automotive industry. But she was not initially sure what she could do in the industry. As George was already working the automotive industry he suggested that there was lots of demand for transmission parts for air conditioning parts and for four by four parts and that this might be a good area to investigate. And that’s how it started. From the start they both wanted the company to be international and not what was the case in most of the other companies, that they saw in the industry, when they studied the competition and saw that the industry was populated by mostly local companies. From the outset they planned to found an ‘European’ company with a European database and a web-

site in three languages. Which it was from the start. From there on they consciously decided to take on as many different nationalities and languages as they could onto the staff. Now Euro4x4parts has as many as 16 different languages spoken by their staff and they have sold products to one hundred and fifty different countries across the world. Euro4x4parts has found a strong and loyal customer base through providing a very wide range of parts and accessories, many of which are not easily available in some countries and remote parts of the world. And of course as internet shopping continues to grow as an opportunity for customers and companies, Euo4x4’s SEO optimised website, quickly puts the required products in front of the searching customers.

For Francoise 4x4 touring offers an opportunity to take the road less travelled and to enjoy the exploration of some remote and beautiful places not accessible to most people. When touring Francoises’ groups are always small, with no more than 4 vehicles. She explains that “I think that off roading is really answers to a basic need of people. The need for us to have full freedom and autonomy for travel. It puts you in a position where you can do what you want really. You can leave. You don’t need anybody or anything else. You can follow your own desires and follow your mood and stop whenever and wherever you like. This is something which will never never change. And whatever vehicle you choose. Only a 4x4 can take you into the remotest parts of the world”. We asked Francoise where she sees the 4x4 industry going, and she explains that she thinks that 4x4 touring will grow even more than then rallying. Offroad racing and competition is changing as well as well. Francoise explains that there’s a lot less extreme competition like she does, and there’s a lot

more cross country people participating. She thinks that this because in general people don’t want to ‘suffer’ the hardships of offroad racing and that they want to have a more relaxing and fun time, in the end. This is a trend that Francoise identifies needs to be taken into account by the industry. For her, racing in the Land Rover Defender, the team are travelling through completely remote and inhospitable places. It takes a certain kind of commitment to get through and to enjoy this type of competition. Francoise explains ”OK, there’s a there’s a tree, or trees all around, or there’s bushes. You initially say it’s impossible , but then you think, and you say OK I can go up 10 metres here and attach a winch here, and move 10 meters forward . The first answer is over there at that tree and then we go a little further and then the second axle gets over . And then you have a new situation where you have to actually take you off your hands off the wheel and saw through so many trees to allow you to progress further, and this is trophy racing, and we love it. We love it because it makes us feel

like we are at the beginning of the world. It is an amazing feeling. We also ‘drive’ of course, and we love the driving, and driving really fast through quicker sections. But the trophies are always difficult and you know that it’s difficult, you know it’s not something that everybody can do, but when you have done it ,and completed it , you feel so proud, proud for what you have done. cotland has been our number one destination in 2019 and I don’t see that changing anytime soon says Chris Barrington of Higher Adventure, who hire adventure-ready Land Rover Defenders equipped with hard shell roof tents. It’s not hard to see why as Scotland’s rugged beauty is postcard-famous: lochs, glens, rocky cliffs, white sand beaches and mist shrouded peaks are punctuated by medieval castles, stone churches, whisky distilleries and meandering rivers. Occupying the northern third of Great Britain, Scotland packs some of the most stunning scenery in all of the UK into its borders. From the rolling hills

of the Borders, to the vast open landscapes of Caithness (the ‘flow country’) to the coastal landscapes and Highland scenery of Argyll & The Isles, Scotlands fifteen regions – each with a distinct character -offer dramatic contrasts of landscape, wildlife and culture. And with 12 National Tourist Routes, the epic North Coast 500, plus dozens of other scenic alternatives, a self-drive tour will take you to the country’s most awe-inspiring landscapes. There’s good reason Scotland’s been an icon of overland travel for generations. Another icon of overland travel that’s been around for generations is the Land Rover Defender, so perhaps it’s no surprise

that these two icons have always had a close relationship. In fact, the remote island of Islay off the West Coast of Scotland played a part in the creation this most British of motoring legends: Spencer Wilks, then the Managing Director of the Rover Car Company, owned

the Laggan Estate on the island. In 1947, whilst driving his heavily modified Rover 12 across the tough terrain, his gamekeeper Ian Fraser quipped how it must be a ‘Land Rover’. From then on the name stuck and Islay became the unofficial prov-

ground for this design trailblazer. Which is both why Higher Adventure chose the Defender, and why over half of their customers choose Scotland as their destination. Of course, driving in Scotland is rarely just about getting to your

their overuse it’ll be of no surprise that getting time away from them is vitally important for children’s balanced development and wellbeing.

fects this can have are substantial. One such study undertaken by the Institute of Education at Plymouth University and the Camping and Caravaning Club, who collaborated to discover perceptions of the relationship between education and camping.

In recent years there have been several studies undertaken to also understand the effects of children spending time enjoying the outParents and children around the doors and in particular camping UK were asked a series of quesand it appears that the positive af- tions which looked at the educa-

It also showed that 98 per cent of parents said camping makes their

kids appreciate and connect with nature; 95 per cent said their kids were happier when camping; and 93 per cent felt that it provided useful skills for later life. So why should you take you children camping and what benefits might they gain? Well for several of the team here at TURAS who have young fami-

lies and often take our children adventuring with us the benefits are clearly visible from the instant smiling faces and watching them embrace the different environment and instant found freedom that they love. Indeed the very fact that most Friday evenings involve us being begged ‘Can we go camping this weekend?’ is proof enough,

but thinking about it further there are some obvious tangible benefits such as: - Learn new skills: from basic camping skills such as putting up a tent, camp cooking, knot tying to other associated skills such as fishing, map reading etc.

- Help develop their creativity: no more relying on technology for entertainment – children use their imagination to play games and entertain themselves. - Increase fitness: Combine your camping trips with activities such as hill walking, climbing, kayaking etc it’s a great fun way to get those hearts beating a little faster. - Build confidence: presents a great opportunity to let them realise they can live away from the usual creature comforts of a modern home and sleeping outside ‘in the dark’ with new sounds they might hear around them can help them overcome any fears they might associated with night time. - Develop resilience: as well as positive experiences such as helping out to pitch the tent and set up camp etc. the challenges presented such as bad weather, not having access to modern days creature comforts and having to generally fend for themselves a bit help to make them more robust. - Connect with nature: sleeping under the stars and being immersed in a new environment full of new sights, sounds and smells can help them gain a new love and respect for the beauty of the world around them and ensuring you employ the ‘leave no trace’ ethos helps reinforce that message of respecting the planet.

IT’S A GREAT WAY TO SPEND

QUALITY TIME WITH the kids

DID YOU KNOW THAT

When we sleep outside, without electricity and artificial light our bodies begin to sync up with the cycles of the sun and effectively resets our body clocks to their natural circadian rhythm and the release of the happy hormone melatonin which contributes to better health overall. Artificial light and modern gadgets like phones, TV’s, IPADS etc are responsible for us staying up later and as a result interferes with the natural light-dark cycle that throughout the evolution of the human race began at sunrise and ended just after sunset.

ASIDE FROM THE AMAZING 4WD VEHICLES AND CAMPING GEAR ON DISPLAY - ONE OF THE HIGHLIGHTS FOR US IS THE DELICIOUS GERMAN

T S R U W Y R R CU

Hats off once again to the organisers of the 2019 Abenteuer and Allrad show that took place between the 20th – 23rd of June 2019 in Bad Kissingen in Germany. With the sun shining for the duration of the show the atmosphere at both the designated campground and at the showground was was once again electric. Everything was up this year including the temperature , number of exhibitors and with over 55,000 attendees it’s easy to see why this show is one of the best of its kind in the world.

We have now been attending this show for a number of years and it just seems to be getting bigger and better. The highlights for us are of course the huge array of camping and 4WD touring equipment on display, the friendly atmosphere at the campsite, the entertainment, the lectures, the great German beers and of course the famous and delicious currywurst that is served at the main catering tent. If you have not tried this German favorite yet well you have not truly experienced the Abenteuer & Allrad show, the TURAS team loves its currywurst with pommes, it’s the simple things right? This year the campground had to be extended to cater for the huge crowds attending with all threes main campgrounds pretty much full on the first day of opening. It always amazes us

the distances that people travel to see this show coming from all corners of the world, as you walk through the campsite you will see vehicle registrations from all over Europe and beyond. For many people this is an annual event with many travellers visiting this show ever since it started over twenty one years ago. Many return visitors choose to stay in the designated shows campground that is located just outside Bad Kissingen. The campsite is walking distance to a large supermarket food store and just over 2km from the town center of Bad Kissingen. As you approach Bad Kissingen the campsite is very well signposted to the entrance is at “Im Lindesâ€?, or just put in Lindes into your satang and it will take you there. The temporary campsite was once again w well catered for with plenty of clean toilets and the prices for having a shower on site remained at a reasonable â‚Ź2.The great weather meant that the green spaces were dry with no mud and as a result helping manage the site. If you are planning at staying at the campsite next year remember that reservations for the CAMP-AREA is not possible ,so if you are planning on meeting friends, there is no guarantee that you will be able to park

and set up camp together, best advice is to arrive at the same time in order to be guaranteed that you can set up camp in the same place. The free shuttle buses once again ran like clock work from the campground t to the show ground; So if you have not been yet and are considering attending for the first time next year the dates for the 2020 show have been set for the 11th -14th June so make sure you put those dates in your diary, you wont be dissapointed. SHOW

Apart from the massive Abenteuer & Allrad show itself, and all of the trade stands and activities on offer , another big part of the appeal is wandering around the massive campsite and taking in the amazing variety of rigs on show. Vehicles converge from all over Europe for this show, and most of these vehicles have interesting stories behind them. It’s a pleasant way to start the evening getting to chat to all of the offroad tourers and adventurers that have come together for their annual pilgrimage to Abenteuer and Allrad. One of the rally interesting thing you will notice when looking around the campsite is the variety and huge number of older vehicles that have traveled from all over Europe. From iconic Land Rovers to ageing Toyota’s Land Cruisers to some very well preserved Steyr Puch’s there is something here for everyone no matter where your allegiance lies. You will also see a couple of two wheel drive cars with roof top tents which is great to see and always brings a smile to our faces. Europe is home to some awesome looking touring vehicles and gauging by the increased numbers parking and setting up camp at the Abenteuer & Allrad campsites this trend is definitely on the way up.

ffroad Monkeys is a small family business in Bavaria that has made it its mission to make great vehicles, Land Rover Defenders, even better. We recently caught up with the guys from Offroad Monkeys at the Abenteuer and Allrad expo in Germany, where they had their products on display. The ever expanding catalogue of top quality parts is very impressive and some new parts were also on show on their demonstration vehicle. Door Hinges The original door hinges have quite a few problems. Rust tends to build up and leaks down on the door in a rather ugly manner. Humidity can get into the car. Experienced Landy drivers know that problem well. We have a permanent solution for that problem. Our door hinges made from high strength aluminum are built for eternity.

arms

Rear Door Hinges The heavy duty spare tire and the dynamic load changes work hard on the original hinges. Many Defender drivers know strong wear of the door hinges and squeaking and creaking noises of the rear door. That was the reason for us to develop durable rear door hinges from high strength aluminum. Window Blocks It´s the same story as with the door hinges, the original window blocks rust easily and if things go bad they even crack the windscreen. With Offroad Monkey’s window blocks, you

don’t just get a distinctive fresh look, you also get extra strength and permanent rust protection. Built from high strength ,black anodized, aluminum. Window Blocks with LED Seeing and being seen is a must for all off-roaders. With Offroad Monkey’s new window blocks, 2 powerful low beam headlights with 2 power LEDs (each 8 watts) can be mounted. The cables are laid invisibly into the interior without having to drill additional holes. Made of high-strength aluminum, black anodized.

Bonnet Hinges The perfect match to their door hinges. Precisely manufactured, stable and long lasting. They also provide theft protection for the hood. It is not possible to unhook the hood anymore. Made from high strength aluminum with a bit more distinctive original look.

Sliding Window Covers The aperture for opening the side windows is relentlessly exposed to all weather conditions. This quickly ages the original part. Unsightly corrosion spreads and the paint may peel off. With Offroad Monkey’s covers made of high-strength aluminum for sliding windows, this is a thing of the past. The parts

Tyres are an integral part of any off-road or overland equipment setup. It’s very important when setting out that you know that you have a tough and reliable set of tyres on your vehicle. Tyres will be called upon in a variety of difficult circumstances, steep ascents and descents, fording rivers and wading through water, driving over deep sand or across sharp rocky surfaces. It is no wonder that there is such a wide variety of high quality tyre options available at the moment from a number

of manufacturers.Generally speaking 4x4 tyre types can be split into categories depending on the type of terrain and usage that they are designed for.

4x4 Road Tyres

As the name suggests, these tyres are designed to be grippy, responsive and to maximise fuel efficiency and are designed for use on roads and motorways. They are also quieter on the road than the other types of 4x4 tyre.

ROAST CHICKEN

e h t n o e r k e c i h cl ideo v We recently cooked up a roast chicken in the Petromax Atago, and to say that it went down a treat after a days fishing, is an understatement. The cleverly designed Petromax ATAGO can be used in combination with a Petromax Dutch Oven or a Griddle and Firebowl. All you have to do is place the cast iron pot/Dutch Oven into the Atago when the fuel source is hot enough to use. Or if you do not want to use the Dutch oven’s lid as a pan to cook your food. Another option includes just adding the grilling grate over the Fire Bowl and turn your Atago into a barbecue, your cooking options are endless using the Atago. We cooked the roast chicken in the Dutch Oven in approximately 90 minutes. Simply add your chicken to the Dutch Oven raise it up slightly to avoid it getting burnt at the base of the Dutch Oven, wrap up your favorite vegetables in tin foil and also place in the Dutch Oven. After an hour or so depending on the heat, you should take the lid off the Dutch Oven and continue to cook for an additional 30 minutes, this helps the skin of the chicken to get nice and golden and giving you tasty crispy skin. Make sure you prod your chicken to ensure it is fully cooked before eating. Enjoy

bles surface is made from sheet steel, the strong legs are aluminum and it is finished off with very well presented timber ends. It is also incredibly strong and well able to hold heavy cast iron pots amongst other things. One of the real selling points for us is not just the fact that it is very well made and will take a hammering but that you can place hot pots and pans on the table without worrying about getting it burnt. Also assembling it and packing it away is simple and fast, the legs sit flush inside the table for storing, and they are secured with the two side clips it is as simple as that.

UNIFLAME TOASTER

Who says you can’t have a nice American style toasted bagel on your next fishing or camping trip. We have had a toaster thingy in the back of one of our Land Rovers for years and it has always frustrated us, mainly because it needed to be assembled every time we wanted to use it, it was a pain and time waster. Recently, since we acquired the much higher quality and compact UNIFLAME version from DRIFTA the other one has been thrown in the bin, no compar-

ison when it comes to quality and functionality. The one thing that has to be said about DRIFTA is that they always seem to bring these incredibly easy to use and practical camping products to our attention. The UNIFLAME toaster is made from Japanese stainless steel and can be set up in various configurations depending on what you want to toast, the V shape configuration will

allow you to toast two bagels or standard pieces of bread at a time. The portable toaster can also be purchased with a high-quality custom made DRIFTA bootiner bag that houses and protects the toaster from excessive use. The toaster also has a high-quality steel mesh and handles that makes it very easy to use. Simply place your bread of choice and set the optional configuration that suits, place on your burner and bob’s yer uncle, you will be able to serve up a perfectly and evenly toasted piece of bread, bun, bagel our anything else that fits for that matter, in no time at all. When not in use simply fold back into the flat packed position and pack away until it’s next use. It’s as simple as that. Check out the UNIFLAME Toaster on the DRIFTA website by clicking here.

TICK

N O I S O L EXP Around the world there has been an unprecedented explosion in the number of people being infected by tick borne diseases..

icks can pass on diseases Ticks are very small and live on the blood from pets, farm and wild animals but they can also bite humans who pass through their living environment. Tick bites are not dangerous in themselves. However, some ticks are infected with bacteria, viruses or parasites that can cause serious diseases in humans so there is a risk that these ticks may pass on their infection to you as they feed on your blood. In Europe a tick-borne disease to be aware of is Lyme borreliosis which can occur in areas where infected ticks that transmit the disease are found. Ticks thrive in shady and humid

woodland, clearings with grass, open fields and bushes. They live in both rural and urban locations. Ticks’ life cycles go through four stages: egg, larva, nymph and adult. During the last three stages the tick may bite and can transmit disease. To the naked eye the larvae look like specks of dust, while nymphs

he Stanley brand has been around for a long time, for over one hundred years in fact. In 1913 when William invented the all-steel, double-wall vacuum bottle and put his name on it. Rumor has it, that he wanted his coffee hot all day while he was working, and was inspired to apply some of his theories learned while developing transformers. As it turns out, necessity really is the mother of invention. Since then, the Stanley name has become synonymous for ultra-durable, super reliable products

made with an eye for sleek design and real life uses. Generations of people have come to rely on their Stanley bottles, mugs, lunchboxes, cook sets, flasks, growlers, coolers, and more every single day, knowing that they’ll keep their food and drink at temperature longer, all while standing up to life’s wear and tear. These tough and durable products are also very sustainable and are supported today by Stanley-PMI’s whose commitment to sustainability is, in part, met by the continuing production of products that

We ran some tests with the bottles and found that in our tests they met and exceeded the stated capabilities on the Stanley website. For example the 1.3 Master series vacuum bottle kept water very hot for us for over 30 hours, we filled the kettle with boiling water and 30 hours later still had enough hot water to make a decent coffee.

ou might have seen some of these awesome looking vehicles doing the rounds on social media in recent times and after getting to see a version of one up close at the Abenteuer & Allrad show in Germany, they look as capable as they do on the internet. Originally designed and built by a Russian company they initially produced approximately 250 and called them the “PETROVICH all-terrain vehicles. It all started back in 2008 when the prototypes successfully travelled to remote parts of Russia tackling extreme conditions. After some company changes and vehicle

modifications the new Russian model is now called the Krechet and it made its debut at the offroad fair Interpolitex in 2017. In Europe, after considerable modifications by Czech mechanics, it was renamed Outbacker 6 x 6. The modified Outbacker proved to be a very popular attraction at the 2019 Abenteuer and Allrad show with lots of curious visitors having an up close look at this 6x6 monster. The 6x6 vehicle on display has had a number of modifications installed with the work taking place in the Czech Republic. What you now have is an offroad category Z transporter with two external side coolers. One of the real exciting things about

this vehicle is its ability to float on water. The driver can regulate the tyre pressure from the built in compressor and pretty much take this thing anywhere. Other key features added included a multimedia display which helps with navigation and with reversing cameras allowing you to get that perfect parking spot outside the supermarket. Under the hood, you will find a 2.3-liter diesel engine from Iveco. CHECK THE ENGINE The Outbacker is sold as a five-seater up to 3.5 tons, so you only need a category B driving license. There is also a nine-seater option available, but you will need a category C drivers license. The vehicle has a standard front and middle axle, the third axle is mechanically connected by a lever from the driver’s seat with all of the axles having self-locking differentials. You can also get a shortened 4x4 version should you want to downsize. The maximum speed is about 70-80Km so don’t expect to be able to speed in this on the open road.
