ow to convert a small former social housing apartment in the city centre of Amsterdam into a spacious urban loft?
Bureau Fraai, a design firm from Amsterdam, first of all got rid of all doors, walls and tiny rooms around the core of this small apartment. Their design focused on creating one solid wooden volume of birch plywood with extended wall cabinets alongside the whole length of the apartment. SUMMER APARTMENT, BY LOFT SZCZECIN, A REFORM IN BERLIN This spectacular apartment is set up in the palace complex surrounded by a forest in the suburbs of Berlin and all rooms have undergone a major renovation texts_ R.D. / photos_ K. BAK
S
ummer apartment is set up in the palace complex surrounded by a forest in the suburbs of Berlin. All rooms have undergone a major renovation. Before starting the work huge amounts of garbage had to be removed from all rooms. The walls required drying and restoration. The floor was a threshing floor so bricks and planks were laid all over the entire surface. The apartment will be used mainly in the summer and during holidays and special occasions. The idea for the interior design to some extent refers to the old Mediterranean architecture, while equipment and furnishings in order to avoid banality, was supposed to be a little eccentric, mysterious and elegant. THE KITCHEN
The kitchen has a simple, homely and a little rural character. Furniture, lamps and accessories have been completed thanks to contacts with collectors and dealers from whom designer has been acquiring those items for years. In many cases, they were completely renovated under the supervision of Loft Szczecin. Designer, Jacek Kolasinski, is also pleased that most furniture, lamps and rugs come from Poland. Several of these items are very unique (some of them were even made bespoke many years ago). Among the furniture and equipment there are also products of the Czech Republic and Denmark at the turn of 50-60, as well as items designed by our studio and manufactured in Poland. ‘NORDSTROM BUILDING’: CLASSIC BEAUTY IN THE CAPITAL Architects and technicians defy compromise to transform outdated Ottawa department store into a sophisticated Nordstrom retail location, a project that has had innovation and quality of materials Neolith by The Size texts_ R. D.
E
legant. Light. Warm. When thinking of the Nordstrom brand, very specific descriptors emerge that evoke the chic, highend style of the upscale retailer. Following a 2012 announcement that the former Sears location at Ottawa’s Rideau Centre would be reinvented as Nordstrom, a great deal of care was taken to select architects, technicians and consultants that understood the brand, the vision and the goal. As the number one retail design firm in the world, designing more than 150 new and remodeled Nordstrom stores in North America, Seattle-based architecture firm Callison was selected for the project in this high-traffic location in the heart of Canada’s capital. CALLISON: SOLUTIONS
Callison began planning, digging deep into the design process and creating what would be an epic, dramatic revamp of 14,000 square feet of dreary, worn exterior and interior storefronts. The completed elevations were sleek and specific, designed with flat panels in a bright, gleaming white with subtle polished accents that would never stain, fade or discolor. The exterior façade would need to overcome the often harsh weather conditions in Ottawa, where temperatures of -20 degrees Celsius are more normal than even locals would like to admit. An installation system that held panels firmly in place without grout lines was another necessity to carry out the team’s full vision. Callison realized this was a tall order. With several key “must-haves” for the project, Callison began looking into potential solutions that would not sacrifice the design details that were so important to the overall aesthetic. After looking at a variety of surfacing materials, Callison was drawn to Neolith by TheSize, a Sintered Compact Surfacing product already used frequently in Europe for commercial facades. The product renovationtoday.com |
|
had a reputation for being incredibly durable and resistant to scratching, fading, staining and extreme temperatures. After meeting with Travis Conrad, architectural consultant for Neolith, Callison’s team was feeling confident for the first time that their vision might become reality. “As architects, we definitely thought about design and the aesthetics of the project foremost, but design visions don’t often link directly to a functional solution, especially when looking at
RENOVATION
a high-traffic commercial project like the Nordstrom at Rideau Centre”, said Michael Lee, principal, Callison. “The product addressed our concerns from a design perspective— an array of tile colors to create patterns of horizontal movement, limited grout lines, varying panel heights and lengths to further reinforce the random nature of the façade, allowing for lasting warm colors—but also from a functional perspective in terms of durability”. NEOLITH
Neolith’s unique manufacturing process, which uses high pressure and high temperature to create a compact, nonporous surface, enables the product to withstand harsh conditions and emerge unscathed. A key concern for this project related to weather, as many compact materials are unable to withstand the coefficient of linear expansion in Ottawa, or the extreme fluctuations in temperature. Neolith’s design, in tandem with a unique mechanical installation system, provided a secure way to fasten panels without fear of cracking or splintering. Neolith and the accompanying installation system also provided several design benefits to the project. The exterior storefront has several sharp angles and edges, as result of the façade being raised away from the main structure. Using Neolith, a chamfer miter is possible, allowing for seamless L-shaped pieces for cladding the outside corners. This
simplifies installation, improves overall aesthetic and avoids the use of unsightly vertical lines where sealing caulk often gets dirty and discolored. This project utilized both 90- and 136-degree miters, giving the building an effortlessly seamless appearance. AESTHETIC FREEDOM
Aside from a clean, smooth look, the architects were also looking for specific colors. To contrast with the concrete and stone buildings surrounding the area, the façade was to be mostly bright white in matte and polished finishes with tan and grey accents. The team selected the pure Arctic White color in a Satin finish as the base and accented that with scattered panels of Barro, Perla and Arena in Satin and Polished finishes to round out the color scheme. Neolith’s portfolio of nearly 50 colors and four finishes gave the team a vast amount of aesthetic freedom to get the design just right. “Once my team [at Neolith] learned about the design goals and confirmed that functionality wouldn’t be an issue, you could see the architect team breathe a complete sigh of relief”, said Travis Conrad, Architectural Consultant, TheSize Surfaces. “We were happy to be able to offer a product and system that evenly matched the high-end quality of the Rideau Centre, Nordstrom and Callison, and let the architectural team focus on crafting a truly beautiful space”._

making the walls of the space cozy organic forms that connect to the embryonic nature that all people held in its most essential memory. No partitioning but flow lines that direct people to the core, to the exhibition center where the car is located, the star of this film. The atmosphere created invites an intimate emotional state that connects people with what they see. The philosophy of this project is to unite, to live and be part of something beyond the product, no intimacy, exclusivity but mostly found in the design of this particular space created by architect Héctor Ruiz-Velázquez and his team of multidisciplinary professionals the Mark intention that you want to connect with something more intangible, almost spiritual intangible that makes the car, the machine into an object of desire possible and achievable. The architecture in the form of packaging without recognized as ceilings and floors, with selected

A REFURBISHING IN DAOÍZ Y VELARDE COMPLEX BY RAFAEL DE LA-HOZ As part of the Daoiz y Verlarde complex of former barracks the objective is to preserve the architecture; a representative sample of Madrid’s industrial and military heritage
textss_R. D. / photos_ALFONSO QUIROGA
T
his time we say that as part of the Daoiz y Verlarde complex of former barracks the objective is to preserve the architecture; a representative sample of Madrid’s industrial and military heritage. From the start, the idea was to respect the basic geometry of the existing building, as well as its saw-tooth metal structure and the brick-built façade. The interior space has been emptied to create a container for the Cultural Centre, which is divided into two areas with separate entry points and circulation areas, but with a strong visual and spatial connection between them, and the possibility of their adaptation to different types of events. A newly created intermediate space separates the former container from the new uses to bring the character of the existing building to the fore and set up a protective filter with the exterior. VISSUAL CONECTIONS
These intervening spaces establish visual connections that foster variations in the spatial experience. A generous communal space has been created at the entry points; a place for meeting, information and exhibitions, which works as a covered agora, as if the square outside extended into the building.
A hi-tech roof has been developed to take the best advantage of natural light and ventilation. SUSTAINABLE & ENERGY
The refurbishment of this former industrial building, and abandoned barracks, has been made in a sustainable way as regards energy efficiency
and the integration of renewable energy capture systems. The existing brick façade has been respected, as has the structure of the roof built from metal profiles, and a new structure of concrete slabs has been created, which will be used for the HVAC of the building through its thermo-activation. |
| renovationtoday.com
SUSTAINABLE REFORM
32
The existing roof truss and its metal pillars remained suspended in the air while the rest of the interior of the building was completed. Geothermal renewable energy is used to heat and cool the building, and the air-ground exchanger works as a pre-treatment mechanism for the primary renewal air. The final energy cost of the building, employing this type of HVAC systems, is far lower than it would be otherwise using conventional systems.

N
ow we told you that italian architect gianluca gelmini has renovated torre del borgo – one of the most recognizable fortified buildings in the medieval city of Bergamo. the restoration project dealt with different aspects that conditioned the conservation such as the structural instability of the walls and floors and the lack of an adequate system of connection between storeys. the existing building also lacked windows and adequate interior finishes, while precarious stone facings were in a state of degradation. with the completion of the project, Torre del Borgo will be able to accommodate the city’s public library. pose, first identifying solutions to the problems of degradation, second offering an architectonic and functional reinterpretation of the building”, explains gianluca gelmini. In addition, the scheme is designed to be made into two functional areas. with the completion of the first phase, the four halls of the central tower and the spaces of the new building intended for services and distribution are fully accessible. A new configuration of iron ramps and walkways is articulated between the spaces of the historic tower and the new structure, connecting the complex’s various levels. The second phase of this project will include the redevelopment of the adjacent piazza del borgo, with the creation of a large covered area which interacts with the new pavement of the square._

AECOM & PININFARINA WIN ISTANBUL NEW AIRPORT DESIGN COMPETITION The new airport will have an initial capacity of 90 million passengers per year. It will be located on the European side of the city, 35 kilometres from the centre on a site adjacent to the Black Sea texts_R. D.
A
COM and Pininfarina team as the competition winner”.
ecom tells us that İIGA has chosen an innovative design by Aecom and Pininfarina as the winner of an international design competition for the regional Air Traffic Control (ATC) tower and technical building at the Istanbul New Airport.
The ATC will be the landmark for Istanbul New Airport, which is set to be the world’s largest new airport in terms of annual passenger capacity. The competition scope was to deliver the concept designs for the tower, showcasing contemporary sustainable architectural design that reflects the multi-cultural and historical characteristics of Istanbul city.
Unusually, the winning entry marries influences from the aviation and automotive sectors, with strong architectural design.
The Aecom and Pininfarina collaboration was chosen from a total of six entries from international architectural teams, including Zaha Hadid, Fuksas, Moshe Safdie, GrimshawNordic and RMJM. The win marks AECOM’s first collaboration with Pininfarina, the design house renowned for its car designs for Ferrari and Alfa Romeo, among others. The collaboration combines the expertise of AECOM’s architectural and engineering teams with Pininfarina’s distinctive architectural style that epitomises speed and movement, influenced by automotive design. Yusuf Akçayoİlu, chief executive officer of İGA, said: “One of the world’s largest aviation projects, Istanbul New Airport’s air traffic control tower will be an iconic structure, visible to all passengers travelling through the airport. We were looking for a striking design fit for a 21st century airport while remaining sensitive to Istanbul’s unique heritage. We received excellent designs from all over the world and are delighted to announce the AErenovationtoday.com |
|
The Aecom and Pininfarina design evokes the aerodynamic forms used in automotive and aviation design, and includes an elliptical tower that will be visible to all passengers flying in and out of the new airport. The tower shape is inspired by the tulip, which has been the symbol of Istanbul for many centuries and is an important cultural reference in Turkish history. A GREAT DESIGN
The design competition is the latest win for AECOM at Istanbul New Airport. Earlier this year it was appointed by İGA to deliver designs for all the airside works at the airport. The new airport will have an initial capacity of 90 million passengers per year. It will be located on the European side of the city, 35 kilometres from the centre on a site adjacent to the Black Sea. Subsequent planned phases will expand the airport to include six runways and three terminal buildings. When all phases are complete, the airport will have an annual capacity of up to 200 million passengers. İGA is a consortium of five leading Turkish contractors comprising Cengiz, MAPA, Limak, Kolin and Kalyon. İGA was awarded the concession to build Istanbul New Airport as the engineering, procurement and construction contractor and will also be the operator. In October, İGA secured a İ4.5 billion loan from a group of six banks for the first phase of the project._

ZAHA HADID PRESENTS ITS FIRST SKYSCRAPER IN MELBOURNE The project will be Zaha Hadid Architects’ first project in Melbourne & the third in Australia after Sunland’s Grace on Coronation development in Brisbane & Mariner’s Cove development on the Gold Coast texts_R. D. / photos_LANDREAM
We are interested in deve1eveloper Landream has submitted a planning application for a mixeduse tower designed by Zaha Hadid Architects and Plus Architecture in Collins Street Melbourne. If built, the project will be Zaha Hadid Architects’ first project in Melbourne, and the third in Australia after Sunland’s Grace on Coronation development in Brisbane and Mariner’s Cove development on the Gold Coast. Proposed tower at 582-606 Collins Street, Melbourne designed by Zaha Hadid Architects and Plus Architecture. Image: Courtesy Landream.
STACKED VOLUMES
The tower has been designed as a series of stacked volumes, which resemble vases. Each volume tapers towards its base, which serves to break down the verticality of the tower while at the same time creates additional public space where the volumes meet. A series of sculptural columns surround each volume of the building to create uniform facades on all sides. The facade design references and emulates the historic architecture of Melbourne’s CBD, reinterpreting it as filigree colonnades enveloping the building. The design also establishes uniformity between the podium, tower and surrounding landscape elements. Located at 582-606 Collins Street, the proposed 54-storey tower will neighbour Elenberg Fraser’s 27-storey Liberty Tower, completed in 2002, and the recently completed 69-storey tower at 568 Collins Street designed by Bruce Henderson Architects. The Australian Financial Review reported the proposed
tower’s height was significantly reduced following the introduction of Melbourne’s interim planning laws in September, which stipulate a plot ratio of no more than 24:1. The proposed tower has a plot ratio of 29.2:1. Landream claims the provision of a publicly accessible ground plane should justify exceeding the plot ratio limit. The proposal includes a south-facing plaza on Collins Street with 350 bicycle racks. The proposed tower will have a mix of retail, commercial and residential and is designed to be 50 percent more energy efficient than conventional mixed-use buildings. The project is not the first foray in Melbourne for Zaha Hadid Architects. In 2007, the practice, along with ARM Architecture, was appointed to design a $1.5 billion tower complex, also on Collins Street in Docklands, for Sama Dubai, a Middle Eastern investment company. The project was axed in 2008, because it was too expensive to build, according to The Australian._ |
