LANDSCAPING

LANDSCAPING

Make a worthwhile investment at home

I’ve thoroughly enjoyed the last 12 months during which time we produced the latest four issues of Landscaping Matters. I’ve met and interviewed some wonderful people and got out and about to the Garden Press Event at the Business Design Centre in London in February, BBC Gardeners’ World Live at the NEC in June and GroundsFest, with its Landscaping Zone, in September.

I must admit I have learned a lot and gained an increased appreciation and admiration for the industry and those who make their living from it.

Our gardens are now much more than a place to hang out the washing or play with the dog. They are, or at least can be, a huge asset to any property and well designed they can provide a calming sanctuary or much needed additional space for al fresco entertaining.

I don’t think until recently many of us baby boomers, in regular jobs living in nice but commonplace housing, would have considered spending the sums of money required to maximise our outdoor space.

Now more people are doing so and not many are regretting it. You get a lovely place to spend time while at the same time making your property ever more attractive should you wish to sell up.

Whe second edition of GroundsFest, held on 10 and 11 September at Stoneleigh Park in Warwickshire, has firmly established itself as the UK’s largest grounds management and landscaping event. Following a strong debut in 2023, this year’s show exceeded all expectations, marking a significant milestone in its young history.

With 8,014 visitors across two days – 4,738 on day one and 3,276 on day two – GroundsFest 2024 saw an impressive increase in attendance, a remarkable feat for an event that only launched last year. The expanded event layout immediately immersed visitors in the action, creating an engaging and dynamic atmosphere

Fusion at Kubota Gianni Ferrari groundsfest 24: more visitors, more excitement!

What happens when Italian flair meets renowned Japanese efficiency? Members of the groundcare press were recently given the opportunity to find out, as Kubota opened the doors to Kubota Gianni Ferrari S.R.L. facility in Reggiolo, Italy. Following the acquisition of the brand in the summer of 2022, the two-day event delivered an update on the past, present and future of developments across the centre-collect front mower range.

Gianni Ferrari boasts a rich heritage of engineering prowess, with the namesake and founder pioneering patented irrigation machinery and the ‘Ferrari Joint’ in the early 1950s. This developed into the design of their first walkbehind tractor in 1957. Fast forward to 1989, Gianni founded Gianni Ferrari S.R.L. alongside Franco Maletti and son Claudio Ferrari where, from their Reggiolo factory, they began the construction of professional lawn mowers.

Various models were introduced over the next 30 years, including the popular Turbo V50 and PG XPRO which gained much respect

from the moment they arrived. One of the standout features of this year’s GroundsFest was the introduction of Machinery Nation LIVE, which captivated large crowds with thrilling machinery face-offs. Visitors watched top brands go head-to-head in a series of entertaining and rigorous trials, comparing performance across categories such as petrol vs. battery, agility, power, and more. Machinery Nation LIVE also provided interactive equipment challenges where attendees could compete for prizes, adding to the excitement and engagement throughout the show. And speaking of prizes, GroundsFest 2024 was a treasure

trove for lucky visitors. Attendees had the chance to win a wide range of impressive prizes, including a Toro ProStripe 560, a CyberTank portable power station and up to £20,000 worth of Kress tools, an award-winning battery pruner SC 100e and a SWIFT 372e battery garden ride-on mower from STIGA, an EGO Pro X battery-powered pedestrian mower, a Union Jack Turf Tank robot, and much more. Innovation took centre stage at GroundsFest 2024 as over 60 new products were launched, providing visitors with a firsthand look at the latest in grounds management and landscaping technology. The mix of indoor and outdoor areas

and popularity throughout Europe. With such a strong portfolio of centre-collecting front mowers for the professional user, Kubota recognised the complementary fit of the range within their existing suite of ride-on mowers and proudly completed the acquisition in July 2022.

With the experience and support of Kubota globally, Kubota Gianni Ferrari have been working hard over the last two years to embrace the very best of the Japanese Kaizen approach to processes and manufacturing – which was evident in the slick and streamlined approach to production visible during the factory tour.

The media were also able to learn more about the current and ongoing developments within the product

range such as the ‘conversion’ of the PG XPRO into the Kubota FC3261, and the FC4-501 which has become one of the most powerful, comfortable and operationally equipped mowers on the market.

While the unprecedented rainfall from Storm Boris put pay to seeing the range in action, spirits were not dampened as all enjoyed gaining an insight into the approach – both now and that of the future – and the company ethos by speakers including Kosuke Ota, Vice President of Kubota Gianni Ferrari S.R.L. Further presentations were also delivered by Henry Bredin, general manager and Matt Wilson, groundcare product manager, of Kubota (UK).

“It’s been fantastic to witness first-hand the enthusiasm and passion among the Kubota Gianni Ferrari team,” adds Matt. “All of us at Kubota are incredibly excited about the bright future, not just in traditional applications, but also in other guises where it can also support the maintenance of artificial sports surfaces. We’d like to extend a massive thank you to the team in Italy for being such fantastic hosts.”

more exhibitors and...

also struck a perfect balance. Indoors, a vibrant show floor offered a diverse range of exhibitors showcasing products and services, while the seminar theatres hosted a wealth of educational sessions, all free to attend.

The Landscape Zone, an entire hall dedicated to professionals in the design, planning, and construction of outdoor spaces in the landscaping sector proved to be popular, adding another dimension to the show’s offering.

Grounds Training practical sessions were another highlight, attracting large crowds eager to learn from experienced instructors on the use and maintenance of pedestrian mowers, ride-on mowers, handheld machinery, and sprayers.

Hands-on experience is one of GroundsFest’s key strengths, and attendees once again relished the opportunity to test out equipment before making purchasing decisions. The Avant National Pro Challenge was also a hit, with participants showcasing their skills in an exciting competition that

involved slaloms, material handling, and tool changes in an Avant Loader.

Beyond the business of grounds management and landscaping, the festival atmosphere of GroundsFest offered a fun way for exhibitors and visitors alike to unwind. The popular happy hour, live bands, and free bumper cars added to the entertainment, ensuring that GroundsFest was not just about work but also about building relationships and enjoying the industry’s camaraderie.

Event Director Christopher Bassett summed up the event’s success, saying: “It’s incredible to see how much support GroundsFest has received from every corner of the industry. The growth from last year has been phenomenal, and we’re so grateful to all the exhibitors, visitors, and partners who made this year’s show such a success. As we look to the future, we want to continue growing and evolving the show – and the only way to do that is by listening to the industry. That’s why we encourage everyone to take the time to fill out the surveys we’ve sent out. Your feedback is invaluable.”

GroundsFest 2025 is already on the horizon, set to take place on 9 and 10 September at Stoneleigh Park, Warwickshire.

After this year’s monumental success, anticipation is already building for what promises to be an even bigger and better event next year. n www. groundsfest. com

New single-speed loader models complete strongest Avant 800 series

The new Avant 855i and Avant 845 models have entered production.

The biggest and strongest Avant loader series is now complete as two highly anticipated loader models have entered production. The Avant 855i is a single-speed version of the most powerful Avant model, the 860i. The new Avant 845 is a single-speed version of the Avant 850. Aimed at different markets, the Avant 855i complies with the world’s strictest emissions standards (Stage V and Tier 4) whereas the Avant 845 is directed to markets with Stage 3a emission standards.

Avant 855i: the power of the 800 series at a more affordable price

The new Avant 855i lifts significantly more than the next largest single-speed model, Avant 755. “The new 855i is Avant’s most powerful loader model. It is the perfect choice for Avant users who demand strong lifting capacity and lifting height but don’t want to pay extra for speed if they don’t need it”, says Tuomas Färlin, Commercial Product & Sales manager at Avant Tecno Oy.

The new Avant 855i has the same Kohler KDI engine, pump package, and electrical and mechanical components as the Avant 860i. But the Poclain MSE05 single-speed drive motors (625cc) are new. Thanks to the simpler drive motors, the price of the new Avant 855i is significantly lower compared to the two-speed Avant 860i.

Avant 855i has the same lift capacity and lift height as the strongest Avant model 860i. Also, the auxiliary hydraulics flow, the external dimensions of the loader and the options are the same as in the 860i.

The single-speed Avant 855i has a maximum drive speed of 15 km/h which is exactly right for short transitions, especially when moving with heavy loads. The pulling force of the machine on standard tires is 1570 kp.

EXCELLENT LOADER

The Avant 855i is a much-needed loader model for many Avant users who do not need high driving speed for long transitions but require the lift capacity, lift height and strong pulling force of the Avant 800 series.

Stable and sturdy, the Avant 855i is the perfect choice for sites where heavy loads are moved and transitions from one place to another are not long. With the affordable purchase price of the single-speed Avant 855i, you can invest more in attachments and accessories that increase work efficiency.

AVANT 845: SINGLE-SPEED VERSION OF AVANT 850

The new Avant 845 is a single-speed version of the Avant 850 model. Like Avant 850, the Avant 845 loader has the same robust Kubota V2403 engine. With this simple single-speed version and its new 625cc Poclain drive motors, you get the strong pulling force and high lifting capacity of the 800 series at a much lower cost. With a maximum drive speed of 12 km/h, the 845 is an ideal workhorse especially for farms and construction sites where heavy loads are handled but the driving distances are short. The electrical and mechanical components are identical with the Avant 850 model, as well as the dimensions and options.

Work starts to regenerate Crystal Palace Park

How HTA Design are celebrating and protecting the historic significance of Crystal Palace Park as they redesign it, connecting the past, present and future.

“This is a major step towards the regeneration of Crystal Palace Park, taking us closer to reimagining Britain’s parks as climate resilient, biodiverse and accessible spaces for all. By celebrating and protecting the site’s historic significance through the restoration and unearthing of its beautiful, listed features, the proposals will re-establish one of London’s legacy parks as an international destination.” says HTA Design’s Landscape Design Director who is behind this iconic South London transformation.

The London Borough of Bromley has recently approved plans for the first phase of its £52m Crystal Palace Park Regeneration Plan, developed by a team of specialist consultants led by HTA Design. The proposals will restore historic features including the beloved Grade-I Dinosaur sculptures and the Grade-II listed Italian Terraces.

This phase, worth £17.5m, forms part of the wider plan to reinvigorate Sir Joseph Paxton’s Grade-II* listed park led by the London Borough of Bromley in partnership with the Crystal Palace Park Trust, who assumed responsibility for the management of the park as part of a historic

handover in September 2023.

Natalia Roussou CMLI, Landscape Design Director at HTA Design said: “The landscape proposals will seek to enhance the park’s incredible green spaces through the restoration of its heritage assets and identifying areas that can accommodate change such as events, activities and new interventions.

“The Geological Court represented a primitive landscape for Paxton. Situated at the lowest level of the sloping park, the area was designed as a landscape of water and geological strata associated with prehistory and ‘antediluvian creatures’. Our proposal starts from removing harmful layers, built up since the 1850s, to reveal the site’s sculpted topography, iconic Dinosaur sculptures and geology, reigniting imagination and connecting the past, present and future.”

PROJECT OVERVIEW

Following further consultation and close engagement with the local community, the plans for the first phase will deliver:

• The restoration of the Grade-I listed Geological Court, including the Dinosaur sculptures and an enhanced landscape setting

A new Dinosaur and geologically themed play area

The restoration of the Grade-II Italian Terraces

• A new Information Centre

and maintenance facility

• A new feature entrance at Penge Gate

• Improved lighting, wayfinding, and accessibility around the Tidal Lakes and Italian Terraces. Victoria Pinnington, Chief Executive Officer, Crystal Palace Park Trust said: “We’re thrilled to have reached this major milestone and the good news couldn’t be any more timely, with 2024 marking the 170th anniversary of the opening of this unique landscape. The regeneration works that have been approved are vital to ensuring that the park’s heritage assets are taken off the Heritage at Risk Register. Once the works are completed, the Trust looks forward to sharing the story of ‘the world’s first theme park’ and welcoming many more people to this corner of south London in the years to come.”

Councillor Yvonne Bear, Executive Councillor for Renewal, Recreation and Housing, said: “I am delighted that our aspirations have now had the necessary approvals and we can forge ahead with our vision for a revitalised green space for residents and visitors. The efforts of HTA Design, local groups and partners and Crystal Palace Park Trust have come to fruition in our bold heritage project about which we can be truly proud and which will benefit not only residents and visitors now but future generations to come.”

Kew partnership with husqvarna celebrated

Husqvarna, the pioneers in robotic mowing, is celebrating the success of its partnership with Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, with its horticulturists enjoying the benefits of Husqvarna’s commercial robotic solutions over the past 12 months.

Husqvarna teamed up with RBG Kew in 2023 to install three commercial robotic lawn mowers at Kew Gardens in Southwest London – two Husqvarna Automower® 550 EPOS robotic mowers and one Husqvarna Automower® 535AWD robotic mower. A Husqvarna Automower® 550 EPOS mower was also installed at Wakehurst, Kew’s wild botanic garden in Sussex. Since then, the team has been able to overcome multiple challenges they previously faced using traditional machinery and see for themselves the benefits that robotics can have on quality, professional turf care.

Speaking on their experience of Husqvarna’s robotic lawn mowers, Simon Toomer, Curator of Living Collections at Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew said: “We have really seen the benefits robotics have brought to

RBG, Kew over the past year, and the team has definitely embraced the change. Making the transition has provided a lot more consistency in terms of the grassland and lawn management in the different areas we’ve been running them in.

“Before our partnership, one of our biggest barriers was achieving that continuous and consistent cut. We’re always looking for ways in which we can make better use of our horticulturists’ time, so Husqvarna’s robotics felt like a no-brainer.

“Mowing grass is a highly important task and it’s a skill in itself. Finding machines that could do that, freed up time for our horticulturalists to be doing things like collection auditing, collections maintenance and development, and planting new plants. Mechanisation has been very welcome to us.

“In some of the areas, it has also allowed more planning in terms of long and short grass which is a huge benefit. So much so, the person who plans can now define exactly what they want from the mowers and then it just gets done. So, for example,

when we’ve got the machines running in the Temperate House, it means that we’ve got that consistent and continuous pattern ready.

“The introduction of electric mowers is also supporting our Sustainability Strategy, which is great, as decarbonisation plays a large role in our 2030 strategy.”

Husqvarna and RBG Kew both share ambitious sustainability goals, and the introduction of electric autonomous mowers has significantly reduced carbon emissions when compared to petrol counterparts that were previously used, as well as reducing cost and noise emissions.

Simon added: “Our visitors are really interested, and we have the mowers on our interpretation boards, so we’ve had a lot of people asking us about the partnership as well as about the sustainability and biodiversity aspects. Visitors are also keen to know whether they can be used in domestic gardens which is great as we can explain the benefits that can also be experienced by consumers in their own gardens.”

Husqvarna has been thrilled with the progress of the partnership with RBG Kew.

Yvette Henshall-Bell, President of Husqvarna Forest & Garden Division commented: “It’s been a privilege to work closely with Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew as such a respected horticultural institution, and it’s great to know the benefits that we have been able to offer the horticulturists working hard to maintain one of the most diverse living collections in the world.

“As an organisation, we also share a strong commitment to sustainability and it’s rewarding to hear how we have helped RBG Kew work towards their decarbonisation goals. There are so many advantages of autonomous technology for all corners of the professional turf management industry, so it’s fantastic to be able to showcase this daily at RBG Kew.” n www.husqvarna.com

Avant loader’s ‘revolution’

Founded five years ago, Tree Peaks has built a reputation for delivering quality tree surgeon services across Lancashire, the Yorkshire Dales, the Forest of Bowland, and the Lake District. Specialising in domestic tree work and log processing, Tree Peaks found itself facing increasing demand for its firewood business. To meet this demand and to streamline operations, owner Bertie Pighills turned to Avant compact loaders.

“We first started with a different loader, but that wasn’t really doing the job,” Bertie recalls. “So, we went onto having an Avant, and it’s just been brilliant. It has changed the business, I would say.”

Investing in the Avant 635, Tree Peaks gained access to a powerful and efficient machine perfectly suited for professional use. With a lifting capacity of 2.8 meters and a telescopic boom, the Avant 635 proved to be a game-changer.

Equipped with a range of

attachments, including buckets, forks, and a hydro rotation timber grab, the Avant 635 enabled Tree Peaks to diversify its services and handle a variety of tasks with ease.

The versatility of the Avant, combined with its manoeuvrability in tight spaces, impressed Bertie and his team.

“The Avant is just perfect,” continues Bertie. “The pivot steer is excellent for moving around the greenhouse and other tight access jobs. It is so quick and easy to change attachments too.

“For me, the weight and the size of it, and the amount it can lift, is a big factor. We can quite easily put it on a trailer and take it to a different place every time. Everything is great about the 635.”

Working closely with Rob Atkinson and the team from APSV, the main dealers for Avant compact loaders in North Yorkshire, Co. Durham, and Northumberland, Tree Peaks experience continuous

support and service, further enhancing their Avant experience.

“I highly recommend both the Avant loader and APSV,” Bertie concludes. “Both work incredibly well for me.”

With the Avant compact loader at their disposal, Tree Peaks has streamlined operations, expanded their services, and elevated their business to new heights.

‘Design and aI now play a key role’

The discovery of STIGA’s innovations for cutting-edge and more accessible garden care continues with James Cameron, the company’s expert voice on design and innovation.

Scottish-born, with a Masters in Product Design Engineering accredited by the Institute of Mechanical Engineers and a uniquely distinctive background in consumer goods design, James joined STIGA in January 2020 and is now Design and Innovation Director.

During his career, he worked as a designer, consultant, and engineer for several multinational companies, as well as with Olympic athletes, creating technology to measure their performance. In addition, James Cameron has been involved in research and development in the medical sector, with the aim of optimising and simplifying the interaction between operator and machine. “My profound passion for design and innovation is what has always inspired my efforts and is the ‘fil rouge’ that ties together all my experiences in different sectors. It is this passion, combined with a desire to do my part to positively contribute to the planet through a more sustainable approach, that brought me to STIGA”.

James believes the combination of technology and design is a driving force for innovation. He said: “Today, design and artificial intelligence play a key role, as they allow simplifying the use of a high-tech product, thus making it more accessible to users of all ages without giving up the performance of a state-of-the-art product. AI, for example, can be applied to ‘train’ the virtual assistant to know all service and product manuals. In this way, the less techsavvy can simply ask the virtual assistant, via voice control, how to solve a problem, e.g. when to change the blades of their robot, how to configure the working perimeter, or how to set the cutting height”.

Among the projects in which James Cameron was personally involved, together with a team of experts in innovation and development processes, the design of the Autonomous Robot Mower was particularly significant. It stood as a symbol of the company’s growing commitment to electric transition and the search for advanced technologies so that STIGA’s innovative, intelligent robot mower would not only be intuitive to use, but also a real “must have” for a healthy and lush lawn.

been involved in the design and expansion of a dedicated R&D space, including an in-house 3D printing center: a facility that proved crucial

“WHAT MAKES STIGA’S ROBOT LAWN MOWERS TRULY UNIQUE IS THE QUALITY OF THE CUT. THEY ARE LIGHTWEIGHT AND EQUIPPED WITH GPS TECHNOLOGY, WHICH ENSURES THAT THE SAME AREAS ARE NOT CUT REPEATEDLY”

“What makes STIGA’s robot lawn mowers truly unique is the quality of the cut. They are lightweight and equipped with GPS technology, which ensures that the same areas are not cut repeatedly, thus preventing damage to the grass due to excessive stress” – Cameron explains, emphasising the importance of care for the greenery and not simply its maintenance. “Thanks to the sophisticated integration of modern GPS technology based on STIGA’s patented predictive Active Guidance System (AGS), which ensures the utmost signal reliability, as well as the functionally flexible manageability and the eye-catching top cover in bright yellow-orange, the Autonomous Robot Mower was indeed recognized with the Red Dot Design Award in 2023″. As an expert in innovation and design, James Cameron has also

in the prototyping and testing phase of products, contributing significantly to their evolution and improvement. James’ words thus reflect STIGA’s approach, which constantly makes innovation the core of its actions, demonstrating an ongoing commitment to the progress and quality of its products. Looking to the future, James envisions STIGA as a leader in the design and production of green care machinery and accessories that integrate ease of use, high quality standards and environmental awareness, inspiring the entire market towards more conscious and innovative solutions. “Technology and sustainability are the trends driving the garden care sector – and beyond. The challenge is to effectively combine and integrate these two components into corporate strategies to ensure a long-term vision”.

The rise of stone products in landscaping – how weather conditions are impacting the industry

The first half of 2024 has been characterised by a series of unpredictable weather events with a mix of unusually wet periods, dry spells, and shifting temperatures. These contrasting conditions have created challenges for garden maintenance and we’ve witnessed a number of our landscaping customers having to adapt and look for more versatile materials.

The rise of stone in landscaping not only addresses the immediate needs of the industry but also contributes to creating resilient and beautiful outdoor spaces that can thrive despite the unpredictability of the UK climate.

HOW HAVE WE ADAPTED AT GEORGE DAVIES TURF AND STONE?

On the turf side of things, we have three main production sites: Lincolnshire, Norfolk and Suffolk. This means that any localised weather impacts have a limited effect on our customers.

Warmer, wetter winters will cause wooden decking structures to rot faster, and the annoying green algae that thrive in damp, shady conditions will grow even quicker leading to increased maintenance issues.

We supply premium, moistureresistant, and slip-resistant Millboard decking which come with a 25-year guarantee and these natural timber-looking, mineralbased, polyurethane, and glass fibre boards are impermeable so they won’t turn green.

THE BENEFITS OF STONE PRODUCTS

Stone products can be used almost anywhere within an outdoor space, from patios, pathways and walkways, to water features, edging,

stepping stones and driveways.

Durability and Longevity: Stone products can withstand diverse weather conditions far better than softer materials like wood or grass. They are resistant to rot, pests, and harsh weather, making them a long-term investment.

Low Maintenance: Once installed, stone features require minimal upkeep compared to traditional gardens that need regular watering, mowing, and planting.

Aesthetic Versatility : Stone offers a timeless beauty that can complement various design styles, from traditional English gardens to contemporary outdoor spaces.

Sustainable Practices: Natural stone is a sustainable choice, as it requires minimal processing and can be sourced locally.

Functional Features: Stone can be used creatively to enhance functionality in landscapes. From retaining walls that prevent erosion, to patios and pathways that improve accessibility.

Our new porcelain range is ideal for warmer, wetter winters. With a modern, sleek design

it helps reduce the growth of green algae whilst limiting slip hazards or the need for pressure washing. In my humble opinion, I think porcelain will be the go-to product for 2025 and beyond.

WHAT DO CUSTOMERS SAY?

“Porcelain is definitely becoming the norm, it’s much easier to clean off and it’s a great way to bring that inside feel to an outdoor space.”

Jason - JC Garden Services

“We recently purchased the grey Indian Sandstone tiles from George Davies Turf and Stone. These are very popular as they give an overall quality finish without breaking the bank.”

“Given the low maintenance properties associated with porcelain and the expansion in colour options it’s a popular choice. Many of the options are quite flat and clean cut in appearance, and this ties in with the current popularity of contemporary finishes.”

STIHL launches powerful batterypowered blower

STIHL has launched the new BGA 250, a batterypowered blower that offers professional users an impressive power-to-weight ratio and a new standard of performance and efficiency. Thanks to the constant power output technology, the BGA 250 offers 100% power even as the battery discharges, making it the world’s most powerful handheld batterypowered blower throughout the full battery charge.

Weighing only 2.7kg, the BGA 250 is lighter than its BGA 86 counterpart and boasts a significantly higher blowing output of 26 newtons. The battery is located inside the BGA 250, making the new handheld blower practical for smaller jobs that require high power. The maximum blowing force can be selected from the simple-to-use speed level controls, allowing for efficient energy management and longer working times. Boost mode may also be selected

to provide maximum power for the toughest clearing jobs. Furthermore, the new blower features an LED power display and a cruise control function to maximise battery use.

In addition to excellent performance, the BGA 250 features an improved battery location directly under the handle, which not only gives the blower perfect balance, but also improves the manoeuvrability of the machine thanks to its shortened design. The BGA 250 also features a nozzle with a shallow bend which directs the ‘push back’ force through the handle, ensuring the blower stays in place during operation with no wrist strain.

Other features include an IPX4 rating, ensuring the new blower can be used in all weathers. The BGA 250 is also compatible with STIHL’s Smart Connector 2 A, a device that plugs directly into the control module and collects useful working time and maintenance information.

NEW Enhance range creates a happy habitat

As the UK faces a significant decline in its bee and butterfly populations, Wildflower Turf Ltd has provided an innovative solution to help reverse the ecological crisis.

The new Enhance range has been designed to provide a lifeline for pollinators.

It includes species-specific Enhance Bees and Enhance Butterflies products to combat Britain’s dwindling natural habitats and maximize nectar and pollen availability.

James Hewetson-Brown, Managing Director of Wildflower Turf Ltd, said:

“The Enhance range was created with the specific goal of supporting and increasing pollinator numbers. By incorporating a diverse mix of native wildflowers, we can provide a sustainable habitat that offers food and shelter for bees and butterflies throughout the growing season and even the majority of the year, if left uncut over the winter months.”

Pollinators are essential to the UK’s biodiversity and agriculture. They play a crucial role in pollinating crops and wild plants, which in turn supports food production and the health of natural ecosystems. However, according to the

Bumblebee Conservation Trust, the UK has seen a dramatic decline in its bee populations over the last century, with two species now extinct and several others facing significant threats. Intensive farming, habitat loss, and pesticide use have contributed to a 97% reduction in the UK’s wildflower meadows since the 1930s, drastically reducing the habitats available for bees and other pollinators.

Wildflower Turf Ltd’s Enhance range provides a practical and sustainable solution.

The Enhance range is easy to establish and low maintenance.

James adds: “Our Enhance range is more than just a product; it’s part of a broader effort to restore biodiversity and secure the future of our ecosystems.

“By choosing Enhance, our customers are directly contributing to the survival of pollinators and the overall health of our environment.”

Attraxor makes impact at Cheltenham College

Cheltenham College, a prestigious independent school with a rich history, prides itself on immaculate grounds that reflect its high standards. Central to maintaining these exceptional grounds is Christian Brain, Head of Grounds and his knowledgeable team.

For the past decade, Christian has called upon Agrovista Amenity for expert advice and products, and in recent years, Attraxor has become a crucial tool in his turf management arsenal.

Cheltenham College, known for its academic excellence and beautiful campus, hosts numerous events and sports activities throughout the year. The main college field, spanning three hectares, is a focal point for many of these events, requiring meticulous care and attention to maintain its pristine condition.

Attraxor is a plant growth regulator exclusively available in the UK from Agrovista Amenity. It contains prohexadione calcium, which effectively manages the growth of amenity turf. By inhibiting the gibberellic acid pathway, Attraxor reduces turf height and biomass while promoting root growth and maintaining turf colour and quality. Its innovative formulation allows for fast leaf absorption, delivering almost instant results and offering

flexibility in application timing, even during cooler weather.

Christian’s journey with Attraxor began a few years ago, thanks to a recommendation from Ray Hunt from Agrovista Amenity. “I first used Attraxor a few years ago. Ray suggested I give it a try, and I’ve had good results from it ever since,” Christian recalls. His application strategy is both efficient and effective, tailored to fit the busy schedule of an independent school.

Christian typically applies Attraxor in mid-May when the weather has improved, and the growing season is in full swing. He mixes Attraxor with fertiliser in three tanks to cover the 3-hectare main college field. “It helps reduce poa seedheads, which is great, and at that time of the year, the grass is growing a lot, so it helps to get a lot of bulk out of it. With the added bit of nitrogen, it gives it a nice colour,” Christian explains.

The timing of the application is crucial, coinciding with Cheltenham College’s Speech Day at the end of May, a major event which takes place on the field. “Attraxor helps present the field for all the visitors – it really shines it up and makes it ready for the day. It holds it nicely through the summertime as well,” says Christian.

The impact of Attraxor on the college grounds has been significant.

Christian notes several key benefits: Improved Turf Density and Appearance: “I’ve found that it improves density and enhances the appearance of the sward,” he says. Reduced Clippings and Mowing Frequency: “Reduced clippings and mowing frequency helps in the busy spring/summer period.”

Enhanced Root Formation: “Root formation is also enhanced, which helps the plant’s vigour and colour when rainfall is less frequent.”

Suppressed Poa Annua Seeding: “Poa Annua seeding is suppressed which means less poa seeds germinating and establishing in the sward,” he adds. Christian believes that the fast-acting nature of Attraxor is essential in a busy environment like Cheltenham College. His limited spraying windows and the constant use of the field requires a product that delivers quick and reliable results. Christian’s experience with Attraxor at Cheltenham College highlights the product’s efficacy and the importance of expert guidance from Agrovista Amenity. By integrating Attraxor into his turf management routine, Christian continues to maintain the high standards of the college’s grounds. n www.agrovista.co.uk/amenity

From Weddings to Waterlilies

Scott MacCallum meets up with Cheshire-based garden designer Jane Bingham, who made a very successful career switch a decade ago.

Jane Bingham

“WHAT I REALLY LIKE TO DO IS GO ONTO GOOGLE EARTH AND LOOK AT THE GARDENS I’VE DESIGNED BECAUSE THERE IS NOTHING LIKE SEEING YOUR DESIGNS FROM SPACE!”

Jane Bingham was at one of the country’s finest wedding venues carrying out research for her role as a wedding co-ordinator, when she took a moment to gaze out of the window.

What drew her attention was to change the course of her professional life.

“I was at Bury Court, in Farnham, which had always been one of my favourite venues because of the wonderful gardens,” recalled Jane.

“Looking out on the garden had a real impact on me and persuaded me to resign from my role and retrain to become a garden designer.

I later learned that the gardens were designed by renowned English landscape designer Christopher Bradley-Hole and Piet Udolf, the

well-known Dutch planting designer.”

There and then, Jane drew a line under her career and put plans in place for what was to occupy her next. She signed up for a course at Reeseheath College in Nantwich, Cheshire, and she was off.

“I decided to give up my very well-paid job and retrain. So I went to Reaseheath College and signed up for a part-time garden design course, one day a week, while I decided to set up my business, The

Cheshire Garden Design Studio, at the same time so that I could be ready to take on work at the earliest possible moment,” said Jane.

Jane had not been averse to making career U-turns in a bid to find her niche. She had originally wanted to be a fashion designer, before joining the Laura Ashley Management Training Scheme.

Rising through the ranks she became a manager of the Laura Ashley shop in the Meadowhall Shopping Mall, in Sheffield, for two years }

Jane Bingham

“IT TAKES TIME TO UNDERSTAND WHAT YOU NEED TO DO WHEN YOU SET UP YOUR OWN BUSINESS. IT’S A MASSIVE STEEP LEARNING CURVE. PLUS, BEING A GARDEN DESIGNER REQUIRES A LOT OF DIFFERENT SKILLS.”

before returning to her old stomping ground to work for a fabric retailer in Chester.

After that it was a job with Fried Earth tiles before that move into wedding organising where her accumulated skills in sales, management and design were put to good use.

Which leads us to Bury Court and Jane, grabbing a moment to look out of the window at the beautiful gardens, and finding herself thinking about a career in landscape design.

It is fair to say that she has not regretted that decision one bit.

“It takes time to understand what you need to do when you set up your own business. It’s a massive steep learning curve. Plus, being a garden designer requires a lot of different skills. You need to have the creative side, but you also need to have an understanding of construction and understand how gardens are built,” she explained.

Soaking up knowledge and skills like a sponge, Jane has gone on to build a reputation for designing sustainable and bio-diverse friendly gardens.

“My first ever commission was for it was a friend of my sisterin-law. They asked me to design their front garden, which they used it a lot and loved. That was a huge confidence boost for me.”

Jane has a little habit that she likes to carry out when she has finished a garden.

“What I really like to do is go onto Google Earth and look at the gardens I’ve designed because there is nothing like seeing your designs from space!”

What is the essence of a Jane Bingham garden and could we identify a Cheshire Garden Design

Studio commission in a blind tasting?

“Of course, every garden is unique because the situation of every garden is different and the client is different every time. But I believe I attract a certain type of client who is keen to include as much planting as possible in their gardens and increase the biodiversity.

“They care about the environment and they’d like to, if possible, reuse materials,” said Jane, and looking at pictures of her gardens you can certainly see what she means.

“Sustainability is key. I don’t attract the type of client who wants artificial grass, hardly any planting and acres of hard landscaping.

“Most of the gardens I design are rural, or semi-rural. Not so much the urban. That said, if it is an urban or suburban client I do like to bring the countryside to the garden.”

With nearly 10 years in business behind her Jane has developed immensely as a landscaper designer.

“It’s the understanding of how a garden is built and how structures are fabricated. This has allowed me to develop an understanding of what can be achieved and this has certainly made me a better designer.”

But there is no “i” in “Landscape Designer” and collaboration is very much the key to a successful project….

Hang on, that’s not right. There is no “i” in “Landscape Architect”. No, that doesn’t work either.

Third time lucky: There is no “i” in “People who create lovely gardens” and working with an excellent and trusted landscaper is key to unlocking the potential of a garden.

“I like to work very closely with landscape contractors on more of a collaborative basis so that I can learn from them as the project progresses.

} “They teach me about construction and then I can take what I’ve learned from that project on to the next project. You never stop learning and it’s made me a better designer.”

There are many excellent companies operating in the Cheshire and Wirral area and Jane tries to identify the best fit for the particular projects she has lined up.

“There’s a company called Base Squared Liberties based in Tilston, on the Welsh – English border. The owner studied sculpture at university, so he’s got a really good design eye as well as having the practical skills. It’s really good working with him.

“Then there’s Landigo and they are based in Crewe. They have built a few of my gardens and together we won an award at the APL Awards recently. Another company I work with is Butler Landscapes, based in New Whitchurch. They are actually working on a quote for me at the

moment for a project in Birkenhead.”

Gone are the days of hand drawn design and even Computer Aided Design has moved on apace in recent years. Jane is very much a disciple of the new technology.

“I use a package called SketchUp. I do like it because it acts as a free drawing tool. It’s just like picking up a pencil for me now. I’ve been using it for 10 years and it’s just automatic.”

That’s just as well as anything which saves Jane time in her increasingly busy diary is a huge bonus.

“I’ve got many projects running at the same time, all at different stages. It can be anything up to a maximum of 15. At the moment I’ve got about 12 on the go, but they’re all different and some of them require more work and more input.

“Others, not so much.”

Jane joined the Society of Garden Designers as a student

member and has been extremely grateful to the Society and the members for their support.

The Society has different regions and there are cluster groups within each region. The groups meet up to share ideas and help each other. “I joined the cluster group in my area and it was fantastic. I got wonderful support from the experienced designers within the group.

“As time went on, I became the Cluster Leader myself, and Regional Manager, Regional Coordinator, and finally National Coordinator and sat on the National Council.

“So the tables were turned and I was helping other, younger designers,” said Jane.

Like many Landscape Designers creating show gardens and winning medals is a goal and an ambition and Jane has already experienced some success.

“The first show garden that I

created was at the Tatton Flower Show. When you’re designing a garden for a show have a finite deadline and you can’t miss that deadline. That garden needs to be ready to be viewed and scrutinised by the judges.

“That’s so different from a normal client garden which is always shifting depending on lots of different factors.

“So a show garden is a big challenge. Getting everything ready and coordinated so all the deliveries arrive at the right time. Yeah, it’s a huge, it’s a huge thing.”

But worth it, as Jane has clocked up a number of successes at major Shows.

That recognition from her peers is justification enough for her to have left her previous life behind and leave her mark in a completely different field… where they can be seen from space!

GONE ARE THE DAYS OF HAND DRAWN DESIGN AND EVEN COMPUTER AIDED DESIGN HAS MOVED ON APACE IN RECENT YEARS. JANE IS VERY MUCH A DISCIPLE OF THE NEW TECHNOLOGY.

Rise of high-tech brush cutters and strimmers

For professional landscapers, the efficiency and reliability of their tools to effectively tackle the various challenges met by tough vegetation and terrain is crucial in ensuring their job is done effectively every time.

Rhys Adams, national sales manager OPE at Milwaukee Tool, highlights how advancements in brush cutter and strimmer technology have significantly improved performance, run times and user comfort across the industry.

The adoption of brushless motor technology is crucial to these advancements, revolutionising tool efficiency. Unlike traditional brushed motors, brushless motors provide increased power, longer operational lifespans and reduced maintenance. This shift enhances tool durability and minimises downtime, allowing landscapers to work uninterrupted for extended periods.

Additionally, as the industry transitions to cordless, batterypowered models have also improved operations by enhancing mobility and ease of use. They offer greater flexibility in manoeuvring through various landscapes without the limitations of cords from electric-powered or CO emissions generated from petrolpowered equipment. This shift supports environmental standards, providing safer alternatives that maintain high-performance levels and more freedom for the user.

Although these are important features, professional landscapers are now looking for versatility in

strimmers,

be designed to handle a wide range of vegetation types. Featuring variable speed settings and adjustable cutting heads, this adaptability ensures precise control and efficiency across different tasks and foliage thicknesses.

Likewise, durability also remains important to landscapers as their tools are exposed to rugged outdoor conditions. Advanced materials and ergonomic designs contribute to lighter yet more robust equipment that can withstand rigorous daily use. Features such as anti-vibration systems and ergonomic handles reduce operator tiredness, improving handling during lengthy operations and enhancing the landscaper’s overall productivity and safety.

Also, manufacturers like Milwaukee Tool are integrating smart technologies into their tools, such as intelligent load sensing and battery management systems. These innovations optimise performance and energy usage while preventing overheating and over-discharging, extending tool lifespan and improving reliability in demanding environments.

Milwaukee Tool’s brush cutters and strimmers stand out with unique features designed for professional landscapers. For instance, rapid acceleration, reaching full throttle in under a second and speeds up to 6200 RPM for highperformance cutting. Each tool includes a two-speed variable trigger for customised performance and adjustable cutting swath options

for versatility, making them the top choice for professional landscapers.

For instance, the M18 LESS GRASS TRIMMER (M18 BLLT-0) provides up to one hour of run time with the M18 HIGH OUTPUT 8.0 Ah battery pack, prioritising comfort and control with its easy-load trimmer head and adjustable auxiliary handle. On the other hand, the M18 FUEL BRUSH CUTTER (M18 FBCU-0) excels in clearing thick brush and saplings, featuring a trimmer head for a 35-40 cm cutting swath and a 23 cm blade with a four-tooth design for enhanced precision, making it a truly powerful tool for professional landscapers.

Etesia Hydro 80: Transforming Pembrokeshire Lawn Care

For Daff Price, owner of Pembrokeshire Lawn Care, investing in the Etesia Hydro 80 ride-on mower has transformed his business.

Serving a variety of clients along the scenic St David’s coast, Daff has seen remarkable improvements in efficiency and versatility thanks to this compact machine.

“I look after mansions, campsites, small gardens, large gardens, and everything in between,” says Daff. “Most of my work is grass cutting and hedge trimming, and I work from January through to mid-November. The majority of the gardens I look after are cut once every two weeks, in all sorts of weather conditions. Some of the gardens can range from formal and tidy to overgrown jungles!”

Before acquiring the Hydro 80, Daff relied on pedestrian mowers, a method that was both timeconsuming and labour-intensive. The Hydro 80, with its 80cm cutting width and hydrostatic drive, has been a revelation. “Since buying the Hydro 80, it has completely changed my business. I’ve been able to go out and work in all conditions, and still do a cracking job. It has made life a lot easier,” he explains.

Equipped with a 15hp twincylinder Kawasaki engine, the Hydro 80 is built for performance. Its powerful motor allows Daff to mow through dense, overgrown grass without clogging, something that was a significant challenge with his previous equipment. “It is great for cutting long overgrown grass,” Daff adds, emphasising the machine’s reliability and consistency, even in tough conditions.

One of the biggest benefits Daff has noticed is the time-saving aspect of the Hydro 80. “Since purchasing this machine, it has probably cut my time in half when mowing the gardens, which means it frees up more time. I can see my family more and get other work done. Saving time for me is everything. It has completely transformed my business, and it makes working a joy. I’ve also noticed a lot less stress on the body because there is less walking and less pushing.”

The Hydro 80’s compact dimensions (197 x 82 x 117 cm) and light weight (240 kg) make it exceptionally manoeuvrable, even in tight spaces. “It is such a compact mower; it can get through small gateways, and you can get into gardens which you wouldn’t think you would get a ride-on in. It fits in the trailer really well, and I can easily transport it between jobs.”

Daff’s work often takes him to picturesque but challenging locations where weather can be unpredictable. The Hydro 80’s

Beyond its performance, Daff appreciates its simplicity and ease of maintenance. “For me, one of the best features about this mower is how simple it is. It is easy to clean, easy to work on and it is very good on fuel.”

The mower’s grass collection system is another standout feature. The Hydro 80 has a 240-litre grass box, which fills efficiently regardless of the weather, and can be easily emptied with just one lever. “It picks up grass really well, wet or dry. It fills the box no matter what, and it

ability to perform in all weather conditions has been a critical factor in maintaining his business’s momentum. “Every day this mower surprises me. Last year I was losing quite a lot of days due to bad weather, but now I go out on this –even in the soaking rain. It blows my mind every time I use it. Considering the way the weather has been, with very wet summers and wet winters, I couldn’t keep losing work, so I needed to invest in some kit that would help me get the job done and keep the customers happy. That is exactly what the Hydro 80 has done.”

has an easy lever to empty it all.”

Daff also values the proactive support he receives from Etesia. “Etesia is a very proactive company – they get back to me fast, and we have a nice working relationship together.”

The Etesia Hydro 80 has not only transformed Daff Price’s business but has also enhanced his quality of life by freeing up time to spend with his family and reducing physical strain. With its combination of power, efficiency, and ease of use, the Hydro 80 is an invaluable tool for any lawn care professional.

Kubota fleet is key to maintenance operations

Afleet of equipment from Kubota is being entrusted with ambitious improvement plans across the surfaces at Hertfordshire’s Aldenham School.

With the assistance of a pair of RTV Utility vehicles, two ride-on mowers and three tractors from Kubota’s L-Series, Grounds & Gardens Supervisor Danny Wells is wellplaced to continue the development of the highly historic sports facilities across the 110-acre site.

Regarded in the Good Schools Guide as ‘seriously sporty’, Aldenham School boasts the title of the earliest organised football club in the history of the game with records dating back to 1825. The game has come a long way since then, as to have the facilities which Danny only recently took charge of in June 2024, though he’s certainly no stranger to Aldenham. “I worked here previously before taking up a ‘dream role’ at Arsenal FC’s Colney training complex for three and a half years. When an opportunity arose to bring everything I learned there back to Aldenham, it was one I couldn’t turn down,” he explains.

Much of the Kubota equipment was already working hard at the school during Danny’s previous stint, and

it’s this reliability and versatility –together with the fantastic back up support from local dealer George Browns Ltd – that sees the fleet expanding more in recent months. “Our tractors are the workhorses for the vast majority of operations we do here – whether that’s spraying feeds on the cricket outfields or hitched up with our scarifier, aerator or top dresser for mechanical maintenance on the fifteen winter sports pitches.”

“Everything we have from Kubota is well-built, intuitive to operate and versatile for all the various applications and environments we manage. Our RTVs for example, one RTV-X1140 and one RTV-X1110, are reliable people and equipment movers. We can use these to tow hand tools and machines such as our woodchipper around, getting things exactly where they’re needed quickly and safely.”

Danny and his team of six also rely on their Kubota ride-on mowers for the upkeep and presentation of lawned areas. “Our F3890 from the Kubota F-Series of out-front rotary mowers is fantastic for cutting the banks around the site, as well as some of our more nativelymanaged areas which might only get one or two cuts a year. It poses

no match for this machine!”

“I also have to mention the Kubota G21 mower, which has clocked up some serious hours. This is our go-to machine for mowing large areas such as the prep school lawn and the grass around our on-site chapel. Because of its manoeuvrability, this machine is also great for getting where our cylinder mowers can’t on the sports pitches. Because it collects, we’ll also use it in the autumn to remove not just grass clippings but leaves and other debris.”

He concludes: “My predecessor did a fantastic job at bringing the surfaces on and with the Kubota equipment at my disposal, I am confident I can continue this great work and lift the bar even higher.”

“BECAUSE OF ITS MANOEUVRABILITY, THIS MACHINE IS ALSO GREAT FOR GETTING WHERE OUR CYLINDER MOWERS CAN’T ON THE SPORTS PITCHES.”

Castle Gardens

Scott MacCallum discovers that a successful garden is a key component to a successful Estate

Kelso’s Floors Castle, in the beautifully unspoilt Scottish Borders, is a place where no two days are ever the same. If it’s a three day event on the equestrian diary; outdoor Shakespeare theatre in the summer; commercial farming; among the finest fishing and shooting to be found anywhere... or even a Michael Bublé concert, there is always something going on at Roxburghe Estate, to give it its correct title.

The grounds are stunning, stretching across a whopping 50,000 acres and including the Tweed and Teviot rivers. They also boast Floors, Scotland’s largest inhabited castle.

Also, if you listen carefully you might just hear a familiar cry and notice a rustling of the trees in the woods. The reason? The castle featured in the 1984 movie Greystoke: The Legend of Tarzan, Lord of the Apes! It takes a lot to run such an Estate, but key to much that goes on are the spectacular gardens which provide not just a tranquil sanctuary for those lucky enough to walk among them, but fresh produce for the Duke and the Castle’s residents and guests but for sale in the Castle shop too.

For example, there is a white board in the mess room identifying all the Estate shooting parties so that he can

ensure there are flowers, looking their best, in each of the guest bedrooms.

The man tasked with making sure everything is looking as good as it is edible is Head Gardener Simon McManus.

Simon runs the gardens with a team of four who look after the vegetable gardens and the show gardens including the five acre Millenium Garden, which has around two miles of edging all of which is now cut by strimmers, a task which takes two days given favourable weather and carried out once a week. The walled old garden is another four acres, and also contains a number of glass houses.

The Millenium Garden features two miles of edging, and is cut by strimmer.

“It used to be cut by hand shears

and would take five or six of us all day. With a strimmer you can do it all edging in a day, weather permitting and it’s done once a week, but that’s going some.

“The groundsman does it and he’s got a routine. So he’ll start here and hopefully get back to here within the week, and then start all over again. It doesn’t take much to knock them off – an afternoon of rain or a machine breakdown.”

Simon has been at Floors for over 20 years and Head Gardener for the last two. His fellow gardeners have arrived at the Castle, and in the horticultural industry, following careers in anything ranging from grave digging to owning a recruitment business.

“We work well as a team, which is good. On the big jobs, we just get

stuck in. Like today we’re picking apples and we’re all on it,” said Mark, adding that this was something new.

“Previously, the apples just went to waste as we didn’t get any revenue for them, Now, as a new venture, a company is going to produce cider for us and we need to collect all the apples we can to provide the juice,” he explained.

It’s not just the weather that can get in the way of the smooth running of the gardens.

“Breakdowns are a real nuisance. You’ve got a job on and then the machine doesn’t start. Last week, the Kubota machine had two punctures. One step forward and one step sideways!”

They do embrace modern technology and had introduced a robot mower to the team.

“ON THE BIG JOBS, WE JUST GET STUCK IN. LIKE TODAY WE’RE PICKING APPLES AND WE’RE ALL ON IT”

“We have a Husqvarna robot mower. It does a very good job because it’s cutting it constantly, it’s not like it gets to grow two inches and then cut back. We also got a new piece of kit last year, called the Foam Stream which uses heat to destroy weeds.”

How does the work fall on an annual basis?

“September is probably the quietest

“FEEDBACK WE’VE HAD THIS YEAR FROM VISITORS IS VERY POSITIVE”

month of the year – everything’s done! Over the next few months we’ll be cutting back herbaceous borders and take them right back. Then we’ll be on with the pruning, rose pruning, apple pruning, the plums. And that’ll keep us busy. Peaches, that’s quite labour-intensive because they’re all tied in a traditional method which looks great but takes time. It’s always been done like that and it’s nice to keep it going. When you get it done just perfectly, it does look good.

“And that’ll take us right up to Christmas and beyond,” said Simon, who also conducts pruning workshops in the garden.

The Castle gardens are very popular with the many visitors who are attracted to Floors and while many are pleased and interested to see the quality of the work carried out, others can be more critical.

“Sometimes they say that we

should have had X or Y harvested by that time in the year. But if we did that they’d have nothing to look at! Also with just four gardeners there is a limit to what we can do and sometimes there have to be compromises made.”

The new year starts with seed sowing.

“We’ll start with leeks and onions, and the like and that will run through sort of into May, April, March and April when we carry our propagation and more seed sowing, bedding plants, veg plants, plants for the castle,” explained Simon, who nets the herbaceous borders.

Simon’s team are experienced in years but have arrived in the world of horticulture via previous lives. For example Kate McClorey, Assistant Head Gardener and current Scottish Garden Designer of the Year worked in the world or recruitment, while Mark Baldwin was a grave digger. Claire Nicho also had various jobs before finally arriving at the Castle.

Prior to taking over as Head Gardener, Simon used to be in sole charge of the glasshouses.

“That was my thing. All I did was the glasshouses. Now managing the garden and the glasshouses is hard going, particularly when you’re hands-on.”

His ambition when he took over his new role was to make his mark.

“I wanted to raise the standard up to the sort of next level. And the feedback we’ve had this year from the visitors is all very positive. Many

saying that this is probably one of the nicest gardens that they’ve seen.“

But he is aware that without bigger budgets, a dream to all but the very few, there are compromises that have to be made.

“If I had more staff, I’d have the lawns weed free and cut with a cylinder mower so we’d get beautiful stripes.”

It’s fair to say that in the last two years Simon has earned his own stripes and is delighted to be working as such a special place as Floors Castle.

“It’s a good place to work and it’s certainly not a drudge getting out of bed in the morning to come here.”

Simon and his team are a key cog in the whole Roxburghe Estate operation and the dedication and hard work shown by them show ensure that the Estate and the iconic Floors Castle will remain as one of the country’s foremost tourist destinations.

Saltex: How far things

Derek Walder – its long-standing Operations Manager – retiring at the conclusion of the Show.

Thus 2024 will mark his 42nd and final exhibition.

Derek’s career spans more than six decades, beginning in the early 1960s in horticulture as a gardener on a private estate in Sussex.

His love for working on lawns then led him to become Assistant Head Greenkeeper at a golf course in Hertfordshire. In 1970, he became the Grounds Manager at a major sports field complex in Southwest London, famously used as the training ground for Wimbledon FC during the “Crazy Gang” era.

His involvement with the Grounds Management Association dates back to 1969 when he joined the then-National Association of Groundsmen. His first engagement with Saltex came as a volunteer when the show was held at Motspur Park, Southwest London.

After eight years of volunteering, Derek took on the role of Operations Manager when the exhibition moved to Windsor Racecourse in 1979. Over the decades, he has watched SALTEX evolve first-hand, overseeing its tenancies at Windsor, Peterborough,

British Empire Medal in the Queen’s Birthday Honours List in 1988 for services to groundsmanship.

In 2014, he received the Lifetime Achievement Award at the GMA Industry Awards and, in the same year, he was awarded up the ‘Unsung Hero’ award by the Association of Event Organisers. Derek was subsequently inducted into the GMA Hall of Fame in 2021 as an acknowledgement of an illustrious career in the industry spanning more than half a century.

“Looking back at Saltex, I never imagined that on a cold autumn day in 1979, when we arrived at Windsor Racecourse for the ‘Windsor Exhibition’, I’d still be involved 42 years later,” said Derek.

Over those years, we have seen so many changes in the industry of which the exhibition has adapted to, and for 56 of those years I was in the profession so I could appreciate what needed from a visitor perspective. Even now, I still get the same buzz when the doors open as I did in 1979.”

Derek has been mosts appreciated by those who know how much work he has but into both the GMA and Saltex.

said GMA CEO Geoff Webb.

“His legacy extends far beyond the various roles he has held within the GMA – he is embedded in the culture of grounds management, having served most notably with the ‘Crazy Gang’.

“Over the years, what has stood out to me is Derek’s passion for Saltex, which he has developed as a personal commitment. His work has provided the GMA with a strong foundation for the future.

What many people may not know is the incredible amount of voluntary work Derek has done for both the association and Saltex, of which we are grateful for and wish him all the best in his retirement,” said Geoff.

Saltex 2024 will be an opportunity for the industry to celebrate Derek’s contributions and to honour his dedication not only to the exhibition but to the industry as a whole. n Register for your free ticket now: www. saltex.org.uk

Visitors looking to discover the future of weed control need look no further than the Weedingtech stand – where they can find the world-leading nonherbicidal solution, Foamstream. Foamstream has been proven in numerous independent academic trials to deliver efficacy comparable to traditional chemical treatments on moss and a wide range of weed species. It combines hot water and an organic, biodegradable foam which insulates the water to retain the heat, ensuring it effectively penetrates the plant and its roots. Together with eradicating the plant, Foamstream also sterilises, reducing future weed growth, treatment cycles and cost. Foamstream’s all-natural composition means it is safe for application in a broad range of scenarios and areas in close proximity to children or animals.

WIEDENMANN STAND A080

Wiedenmann UK brings a new mini version of the versatile Super 500 and 600 sweeper collectors. In different modes, these sweep and collect leaves, scarify, flail and fraise mow. Debris is vacuum packed. In 2018, Wiedenmann developed its first entry-level ‘mini’; the Super 1300 S, which could both sweep and collect, but stopped short of doing other tasks. Welcome the Super 1300 M. In this version, the lower rotor paddle is replaced with a multi-head, to support flail and scarifying blades, like those on the giant Supers. The blades give scope to cut, collect and sweep in one pass. Or, if in scarifying mode, it can scarify and pick up loosened debris. The agile Super 1300 is effective working around the areas where its all-round abilities are most required.
