They live in rocky areas, where, thanks to their hooves, they have great agility, even though they can sometimes be seen on lower lands, but only when food is scarce. This ruminant herbivore eats mainly weeds (grammineas, leguminous) throughout the Spring; and fruits (carob beans, acorns, berries) at the end of Summer; and during the Winter, they eat bushes such as rosemary, jaras and aulagas.
CABRA MONTÉS (Capra pyrenaica hispanica) Los lugareños han convivido desde siempre con este morador de la Sierra de Mijas Mamífero del tamaño de una cabra doméstica pero mucho más robusta. Existen diferencias entre sexos, tanto en el tamaño como en el pelaje pero, sobre todo, en sus cuernos. Los machos llegan a pesar hasta 75 Kg frente a los escasos 40 Kg de las hembras. El pelaje de ellas es pardo y poco llamativo, mientras que el de los machos es más grisáceo y presentan manchas negras en el pecho y el vientre. El rasgo más distintivo está en la cabeza, por la barba y el tamaño de los cuernos de casi un metro en los machos adultos frente a los escasos 25 cm en las hembras.

The mountain goat does not have sharp eyesight, although its hearing and sense of smell are excellent, which allows the goat to discover our presence immediately. To watch the goats, we must move very silently towards them and always with the wind against us, so that, they do not smell us. How old are they? Both, male and female horns have a yearly growth. This enables us to know their age by counting the number of rings that appear around the horns.
Las hembras con sus crías forman pequeños grupos separados de los machos. En otoño, llega la época de celo y los machos se muestran más activos, luchando entre sí con el propósito de aparearse. La gestación durará cinco meses.
Viven en zonas de roquedos y pedregales, donde se mueven con agilidad gracias a sus pezuñas, aunque también pueden frecuentar zonas de terrenos bajos, sobretodo, cuando escasea el alimento. Este herbívoro rumiante se alimenta principalmente de hierbas (gramíneas, leguminosas…) durante la primavera, de frutos (algarrobas, bellotas, bayas…) a finales de verano y ramoneando el matorral (jaras, romeros, aulagas…) durante el invierno.
Conozcamos su edad En ambos sexos, los cuernos tienen un crecimiento anual. Este dato nos permite conocer la edad de cada individuo si contamos el número de medrones (anillos) que aparecen a lo largo del cuerno.

Este defecto lo contrarresta con un buen oído y olfato que le hacen descubrir nuestra presencia de inmediato. Para observarlas bien, debemos acercarnos a ellas en silencio y, sobretodo, con el viento en nuestra contra para impedir que nos huela.
This mammal is the size of a common goat, but a lot more sturdy. There is a difference between the female and male; size, coat and horns. The males can reach 75Kg in weight, whilst the female weighs just under 40Kg. The female’s coat is a matt brown, whilst the males coat is more grey and has black spots on its breast and belly. However, the most distinctive features are on the head of the adult male goat, with a beard and horns that measure up to a meter high, where as the females horns are just less than 25cm high. The females gather into groups with their kids separate from the males. Autumn, is the mating season and the males start to be more active, fighting between themselves with the purpose to mate. The goat’s gestation lasts five months.
