ESPARTO (Stipa tenacissima)
It was normal that work was spread out. Usually, the man picked and treated the esparto grass and the woman made plaits out of it. Afterwards, the edges of the plaits are sewn together to make the desired object such as mats, sandals, saddles, muzzles, baskets, nets…
Due to the great resistance of the fibre and that to transform it you need very little tools (club, scissors, needle and leather thimble), the esparto grass has been used throughout the times.

sta fibra vegetal se ha utilizado en la fabricación de cestas, cuerdas y otra gran variedad de objetos, e incluso, en la industria del papel. Hoy día, los nuevos materiales como el plástico lo han relegado a la artesanía popular. El esparto es una planta silvestre de la familia de las gramíneas que crece de forma espontánea en las zonas secas del centro y sur de España. Se caracteriza por un cepellón perpetuo de hojas duras y lineales. Su floración es en primavera con la aparición de numerosas espigas. El mejor momento para la recolección es en verano. Se puede trabajar en verde o crudo (tal y como viene de la sierra),
cocido, secado y también majao (golpeado con la maza o maja sobre una piedra para dejarlo más suave). Lo normal era un reparto de las tareas, siendo el hombre quien lo recolectaba y trataba, mientras que la mujer se encargaba de trenzar el esparto (elaborar la pleita). Seguidamente, se cosían los bordes de las pleitas dando forma a la pieza que se quería hacer (esterillas, capachas, serones, alpargatas, bozales, redes,..). La resistencia de esta fibra tan abundante y las pocas herramientas necesarias para su transformación (maza, tijeras, aguja y dedal de cuero), favorecieron su uso generalizado desde tiempos remotos hasta nuestros días.

The esparto grass is a weed and is family of the Gramineas, which grows wild in dry areas of central and southern Spain. It is known for its lifelong bush of hard and long leaves. It flowers in Spring at which time numerous needles appear. The best time for harvest is Summer time. It can be worked all ways, green or raw (as it is picked in the mountain) cooked, dried and even crushed on a stone to soften.
