group has maintained its essence. Their primary activity is Big Band music, orchestral jazz that came onto the scene at the end of the 1920s. The music that they interpret in their repertoire passes through blues, swing, funk and the grand orchestral stylings of the end of the 19th century and the start of the 20th”. They have performed numerous shows in nearby cities such as Sant Carles de la Ràpita, Ulldecona, and Vallibona, as well as other countries like France. The current Big Band d’Alcanar is under the direction of Juan Antonio Serrano and is composed of 22 musicians, enthusiasts of all ages who share their passion for music. This concert is done in collaboration with Joventuts Musicals de Vinaròs.
Belén López Thursday, 19th August Belén is a precise, vibrant, and spontaneous dancer with superb technique and strength. Born in Tarragona to a Cordovan mother and a Sevillian father, the path she laid out for herself was in dance, despite flamenco not being a family tradition. At the age of eleven, she began her studies at the Madrid Conservatory of Dance, from which she graduated just four years later. From 2001 to 2005, she was prima ballerina at Arena di Verona, the largest open-air opera theatre in the world, with the operas Carmen and Il Trovatore. In 2004, she received the Mario Maya national flamenco prize, and in 2005 she was given the “Artista Revelación” (“Breakout Artist”) prize granted by El Corral de la Pacheca. She has danced with big figures in flamenco such as Joaquín Cortés and Antonio Canales. Accompanied by her cast of singers and musicians, tonight she will make us all participants in her art.
Eleven Jazz Ensemble
Xiomara Abelló Thursday, 26th August A graduate of jazz guitar from the Conservatory of Music of Valencia, she trained in classic guitar and has a degree in English Philology. Xiomara has been a guitarist in groups that span traditional Cuban music, Brazilian music, musical theatre, and her own works. In 2018 she received both the Public Award in the Xàtiva SingerSongwriters contest and the Benicarló Small-Voice Singer-Songwriters contest. Tonight, Xiomara Abelló presents to us “Flor de Xicoia” from her album “Entre teles”. It is a set of compositions that she made during a four-month trip throughout Latin America. The work has influences from the Mediterranean to the Caribbean, from the Andean mountains to the Argentine plains. It is a space where music, words and life experiences come to life to open doors to views and cultures that can’t help but enrich one’s own.
Eleven Jazz Ensemble Thursday, 2nd September Eleven musicians, with original arrangements and a great propensity for improvisation, with the fresh sound of a group that, while close to being a big band, highlights their agility and the characteristic freshness of Cool Jazz. The ensemble starts by doing a deep dive into the works of Duke Ellington, one of the most important figures in the history of music, with original retellings and arrangements of his most significant repertoire. This project is the fruit of the restlessness experienced by the double bass player Diego Barberà during the confinement, emerging into the world of jazz, a genre in which he performs with complete liberty both as a composer and as a performer. In music, jazz is synonymous with liberty, resilience, and improvisation. This language has allowed musicians from all across the world to express themselves freely and to bring together the rhythms and melodies of various peoples.
