The Vinaròs TOP TEN Església arxiprestal de l’Assumpció The church-fortress of Our Lady of the Assumption (1586) blends religion and safety, having the typical features of Mediterranean church-fortresses. Its highlight is the doorway with its altarpiece, a treasure from the Valencian Baroque era, which has been declared an artistic monument. The paintings on its external walls depicting architecture stand out as the only ones of this size in the Valencian Community. (Carrer de Sant Cristòfol and Plaça de Sant Telm).
Casa Giner Casa Giner is one of the best examples of the liberal and bourgeois idiosyncrasy of Vinaròs in the first quarter of the 20th century. The highlight of this modernist house is the stucco décor on its façade. (Carrer Major, 4). Try our Vinaròs prawns Our restaurants and central market are the ideal places to taste and buy the best local products. What could be better than savouring a plateful of fresh king prawns? Once you buy the products, they’ll cook them for you on the spot so you can sit and enjoy them in peace accompanied by a glass of vermouth. There’s nothing more authentic than that!
4
Central market A building dating from the 20th century. In 1928, where the former convent of Sant Telm once stood, work began on the market building we see today, an example of the cast-iron architecture of the early 20th century. (Plaça de Sant Agustí).
Casa Membrillera A stately Renaissance home dating from the 17th century. It is currently home to the Caixa Vinaròs Foundation and hosts permanent exhibitions dedicated to the culture, tradition, commerce, and history of Vinaròs. (Carrer de la Mare de Déu del Socors, 64).
Serra del Puig nature reserve Located at one of Vinaròs’ highest points, this nature reserve boasts unique views of the coast and olive trees, many of which are over a thousand years old. Here we find the Santuari de la Misericòrdia, a chapel built between the 15th and 18th centuries, and the El Puig Iberian settlement, an archaeological site of great historical interest, dating from between the Iron Age and the Iberian Era.
Promenade Our promenade offers visitors a wealth of options, from leisurely family strolls to bike rides or simply gazing at the sunset from the shore. And you mustn’t leave without sampling our cuisine on one of our terraces. Here we live a Mediterranean pace of life!
Seaside trail This path winds down the town’s southern coast alongside many coves and beaches, which are protected by low cliffs and are home to typical Mediterranean coastal vegetation (such as Campylanthus salsoloides and the Mediterranean dwarf palm). Be sure to check out the gorgeous cliffs where you can enjoy the sunshine and tranquillity of the sea while relaxing on sun decks – wooden platforms that blend in with the rocky coastal landscape.
Sòl de Riu nature reserve This nature reserve on the north coast of Vinaròs shows what the coastline has been like for hundreds of years since before the town was developed. Take the path through the reserve guided by signs that inform you about the Mediterranean, the local orchards, crops, plant species, and panoramic views of the Ebro Delta.
Coves Cala del Puntal, on the south coast, and Cala del Pinar and Cala de la Foradada, both on the north coast, are the most popular spots for visitors.

From there you can see the fishing boats returning to port to sell their catch in the popular auction. Sign up for a guided boat tour to see it all in more detail.
HISTORY Vestiges of the past The town’s origins are unclear. One important example of its past that still stands today is the Iberian settlement of El Puig de la Misericordia, where important vestiges of human activity in the 6th century BC have been found. However, the oldest written historical account dates back to 1233, when the Moorish hamlet Beni-Al-Arús was conquered and converted to Christianity by King James I of Spain. Vinaròs also has a noteworthy historical event involving the Moorish population. In 1609, everyone practising this religion was expelled through the largest ports on the Spanish Mediterranean coast, including our own town. During the 16th and 17th centuries, Vinaròs was considered to be a strategic port and enclave for Mediterranean maritime commerce. The town was so well-known as a port that it even hosted consular headquarters for Italy and France. The main export was wine, which was produced in Vinaròs and the surrounding area. The main activity at the port today is fishing, and Vinaròs stands out for being one of the Mediterranean ports where the most oily fish is caught. An interesting fact is that in 1892, 4% of the wine consumed in Spain came from the port of Vinaròs.
6
ITINERARY Architecture through the ages The largest monumental building is the church-fortress Our Lady of the Assumption (1586). This is one of the clearest examples of Gothic Renaissance architecture with its huge Baroque doorway, flanked by two elegant Solomonic columns. This treasure from the Valencian Baroque era is characteristic for being an example of a churchfortress located in the heart of the old town. The bell tower is 33 metres high, making it an ideal lookout point and shelter from enemies. Its façade was declared a historical artistic monument in 1978.
The church-fortress of Our Lady of the Assumption was the main point of defence from continuous attacks from Berber pirates.
7
We recommend that you take a walk around our streets and discover our architecture from throughout the ages. Let’s start at Església Sant Telm, a former church which is now the municipal auditorium (Plaça de Sant Agustí). Next, on the ground where the old convent was located, work began in 1928 on the market building we see today (Plaça de Sant Agustí), an example of the cast-iron architecture of the early 20th century. The best example of modernist architecture that you will find in Vinaròs is Casa Àngel Giner (Carrer Major). This exquisite building, dating from 1914, has preserved its original structure and some of its décor. Another modernist landmark is Casa Sendra (Plaça de Jovellar), with a symmetric façade decorated with plant motifs and musical sculptures. Among the most significant municipal buildings we can highlight the Casa de la Vila (Carrer Major), which was the town hall until 1785 and built upon stone arches, known for its Gothic-style bifora in the original façade.
Casa Àngel Giner (in the photo) and Casa Sendra are magnificent examples of the modernist architecture in the Valencian Community.
8
Moving on, Casa Membrillera (Carrer Socors), also known as Les Coroneles, was built in the 18th century in the Renaissance style and today hosts a cultural and exhibitions centre. Here you can see a free exhibition that tells you about the maritime, industrial, and agricultural history of Vinaròs.
Santuari de la Misericordia sanctuary
Continuing with our itinerary, the next stop is the monument to Archbishop Costa i Borràs (passeig de Blasco Ibáñez), which rises up facing the sea in honour of the architect of the town’s port. Another example of civil heritage related to the sea, as well as the economic and commercial splendour experienced by the town in the 19th and 20th centuries, is the former San Pedro fishing cooperative on the promenade. Finally, the bullfighting arena is sure to catch your eye – the one closest to the sea throughout Spain. On the outskirts of the town, Vinaròs preserves other outstanding monuments that can serve as end points to our itinerary such as the Ermita de Sant Gregori chapel and the Santuari de la Misericòrdia sanctuary (6 km from the town), nestled in the El Puig mountains.

GASTRONOMY A taste of the sea in Vinaròs
In Vinaròs you will find several places for lovers of sweets and fans of artisanal breads and pastries: Vinaròs Llépol and Vinaròs al Forn. You can pick these up in the tourist information office. Don’t miss them!
Gastronomy is one of Vinaròs’ greatest assets. The tradition of a coastal town and the abundance of locally grown fruits and vegetables provide a wide variety of flavours and aromas to its Mediterranean repertoire. Its rice dishes, fish, and seafood, alongside Vinaròs prawns, all renowned in the culinary world thanks to their flavour and quality, are the culinary basis for a wide variety of delicious dishes that are sure to tickle your taste buds.
Ancient olive trees
Vinaròs and the land around the Sénia is the area with the highest density of centuries-old olive trees in the world. These olive trees produce a unique extra-virgin olive oil that is unique and unlike any other thanks to its origin, texture, and special flavour.
We’re sure you’ll love them!
The mantis shrimp
The mantis shrimp has gone from being a product that was once discarded or was used only for stock to becoming the central product of our gastronomy events. It has such an exquisite flavour that despite the obstacle posed by its hardened shell, it is becoming increasingly popular to eat grilled or boiled as conventional seafood.
14
Other products
In the area around Vinaròs we can find other gastronomic products and experiences related to wine, cheese, rice from the Ebro Delta and oranges, the emblematic product of the Valencian Community.
15

At the break of dawn, a traditional fishing boat will be waiting for you in the Port of Vinaròs to embark on the experience of being a sailor for the day.
The Vinaròs prawn and the sea in the town’s cuisine Legend has it that the Duke of Vendôme, descendent of Henry IV of France and member of the House of Bourbon-Vendôme, died in 1712 in the town of Vinaròs from indigestion caused by eating too many prawns after being named Viceroy of Catalonia and Chief Commander of the Spanish army. This is one of the many reasons why we encourage you to try our famous prawns – in moderation of course. Their most distinctive characteristics are their meatiness and robust bodies. Gastronomy critics and some of the best chefs in Spain

You can also make the most of your day by the seashore snorkelling, fishing, or doing other water sports like stand up paddle surfing.
21
FESTIVALS in tune with the seasons Vinaròs’ festival year starts with St. Anthony’s day (17 January), on the eve of which bonfires are lit. Then on Saint Sebastian’s day (20 January), the townspeople go on a pilgrimage in honour of the town’s patron saint. When February arrives, the town throws itself into its carnival, a festival which has been declared to be of regional interest for tourism and is its biggest festival. In Holy Week –recognised as a festival of regional interest– religious processions and acts are held.
Picture of friars in one of Vinaròs’ Holy Week processions.
22
When summer comes, children and adults alike take part in the fun and activities of Saint John and Saint Peter’s feast days and fairs. At these popular festivities you can enjoy music in the open air, fireworks, and a large funfair for the entire family. During the summer season there is one celebration after another, such as the traditional maritime procession that takes place on 16 July, the day sailors honour their patron saint Our Lady of Mount Carmel. In summer, there are many open air leisure activities such as our summer cinema, the concert season in the
Misericordia sanctuary, or yoga on the beach. As a prelude to autumn, in September we commemorate the granting of the municipal charter to the town of Vinaròs by organising numerous cultural activities such as concerts, exhibitions, theatre, and guided tours, and more. And in winter, Vinaròs decorates its main streets and organises activities such as children’s workshops, theatre, a live Nativity scene, and the three kings parade to celebrate the Christmas season.
Vinaròs is a town that loves its festivals, holding numerous celebrations and events throughout the year.
23
The Carnival Queen Presentation Gala, one of the most spectacular events in the Vinaròs carnival.
Carnival Vinaròs carnival has been held in our town since the 14th century. In the 18th century, masked balls became popular in the style of those organised in big cities. However, they were banned during Franco’s dictatorship, as was the case in the rest of Spain, until they were then restored by the people in 1983. Since 2007 they have been declared a festival of interest to tourists in the Valencian Community. Vinaròs considers its carnival to be the liveliest festival of the year. When February comes around, the town devotes itself fully to this festival, becoming a focal point of fun and imagination. Fantasy, colours, and music flow through the streets for ten days in the many events that finish with the parades. More than thirty troupes parade through the streets of Vinaròs, accompanied by the Carnival King and his entourage.
24
Experience carnival like a true Vinaròs native If you’re an early riser, you are bound to come across people busy finishing off pieces they’ve been working on for months. Feathers, colours, sequins, and a lot of sparkle, all features of the costumes that flood the streets during the carnival period. You mustn’t miss the festival’s opening ceremony with the Carnival King and his entourage. If you want to experience the carnival like a true Vinaròs native, you have to go see the parades. The queens and kings of the troupes will cheerfully encourage you to dance along to the rhythm of the music. What’s more, with 5,000 troupe members, you will see a wide variety of costumes and the creativity of our carnival organisers. For the younger members of the family, we recommend that you take a look at the children’s carnival queen presentation, an initiative that brings the carnival closer to the little ones.

WELCOME TO VINARÒS make yourself at home Photo of the Processó de La Matinada (the dawn procession)
Holy Week The events of Holy Week start with the traditional Trobada de Bombos i Tambors in which bands from different towns from the provinces of Castellón, Tarragona and Teruel participate. After that, the processions and religious acts focus mainly on Maundy Thursday and Good Friday. You can see processions and religious icons of great artistic value on the town streets as they are brought out of the churches and chapels. The first of the processions is on Holy Wednesday at five o’clock in the morning and is known as the Processó de la Matinada – the dawn procession. The streets of Vinaròs old town fill with onlookers waiting to see the solemn processions of the brotherhoods as they pass. The last of the processions is the Processó de la Trobada on Easter Sunday. The Processó de la Matinada, which dates back more than 500 years, was resumed in 2010 after being discontinued in 1912. The route of the procession is the same as the old one, also respecting the same points for the Stations of the Cross.
