James Madison University is a model of the Engaged University— broadly involved with ideas, our community, and with the world. Our partnership with Study Group helps bring the world to us by attracting international students to our campus. James Madison University is a very special place in the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia, surrounded by beautiful mountains and just two hours from the nation’s capital of Washington, D.C. We are a fairly large university with approximately 20,000 students, yet offer a very warm and hospitable environment with a family feel and a strong culture of community and civic engagement. Named after the Father of the U.S. Constitution and a great statesman, our university is delighted to welcome international students and is committed to making you feel at home. We want all students to succeed and believe that our partnership with Study Group creates a friendly environment where our students can improve their English language skills while also taking courses in our academic programs. All JMU students take courses in our General Education Program, which offers a liberal arts foundation that will help you to think in different ways as you solve problems and address issues in the world today. We also offer a wide variety of excellent academic majors. Our faculty members are devoted to teaching students, guiding their research and mentoring them as they develop as scholars and mature as human beings. Jonathan R. Science, Technology and Mathematics Pathway This pathway differs from the Engineering pathway in the science courses offered: general physics and biology are taken instead of the calculus-based physics courses in engineering. The STM pathway provides the necessary foundation to advance to degrees in science, technology, and mathematics. JMU is the first university to acquire Science on a Sphere (SOS) – a sphere-shaped, visualization tool that was developed by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). SOS uses four projectors to project onto the surface of a six-foot diameter sphere and is used for research, education and outreach.
