International First Year (IFY) Pathways to second year undergraduate study For students who meet JMU admissions requirements, but need additional English language support, the International Study Center (ISC) delivers a customized English language and academic preparation program for undergraduate students to help them integrate into American university life while enjoying the full Madison experience.

The International First Year (IFY) provides pathway programs that combine English training and 27–31 JMU course credits for a smooth transition into degree success. Students can choose from four different pathways that lead into more than 100 programs of study.

Actual credits earned will depend upon successful completion of English and credit bearing courses. Students need to obtain a 2.25 GPA, and complete courses ISC 103 and ISC 123 with grade C or better, to progress to Year 2 of the JMU bachelor’s degree.

A combination of English, academic, and study skills courses are taught at the ISC, providing the necessary academic credits for the first year of undergraduate coursework. Upon successful completion of the IFY, students matriculate into their second academic year of undergraduate coursework.

Science, Technology and Mathematics Pathway This pathway differs from the Engineering pathway in the science courses offered: general physics and biology are taken instead of the calculus-based physics courses in engineering. The STM pathway provides the necessary foundation to advance to degrees in science, technology, and mathematics. JMU is the first university to acquire Science on a Sphere (SOS) – a sphere-shaped, visualization tool that was developed by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). SOS uses four projectors to project onto the surface of a six-foot diameter sphere and is used for research, education and outreach.

Facilities

State-of-the-art facilities are everywhere at JMU. International First Year students take classes across campus and have access to all the facilities Including:

Forbes Center for the Performing Arts: Five premier venues offer critically acclaimed guest artists and performances year-round. See upcoming performances at www.jmu.edu/jmuarts/forbescenter

Bioscience building: Opened in 2012, students research and study in state-of-the-art lab facilities and classroom space including a greenhouse, a light microscopy facility, herbarium, and shared equipment rooms.

University Recreation Center (UREC): In addition to traditional workout facilities and equipment, the University Recreation Center offers a 32 foot high climbing wall, an indoor track, 60 different group fitness classes, a smoothie bar, a pool and hot tub, massage services, and wellness and outdoor programs.

Libraries: Enjoy access to nearly 700,000 books, periodicals, audiovisual materials and media equipment along with coffee bars and a variety of study areas. 18

The Quad: Considered the heart of campus, many students can be found studying, socializing or playing sports here on a warm sunny day.

Taylor Down Under (TDU): An informal place on campus for students to hang out and study. Comfortable seating and a coffee shop present the perfect atmosphere for open mic nights and poetry readings.

Newman Lake: This quiet lake surrounded by sleepy willow trees is a great place to spend outdoor time on campus.

Video and Television Production Studios: The School of Media Arts and Design houses a new digital high-definition video production facility for both field and studio production.

University Park: This new outdoor recreation facility can host up to 4,000 participants and includes a multi-purpose turf, 2 basketball courts, 4 tennis courts, 2 sand volleyball courts, a pavilion and gatehouse to checkout equipment. A ropes and disc golf course will also be included on the site.

Accommodation

A majority of JMU undergraduate students live in nearby (within a 3km radius of campus) student housing complexes. International students find that they prefer to live off campus in the luxurious, affordable and safe housing that Harrisonburg offers just for students.
