Award-winning research
Enterprising attitudes
Surrey in the league tables
In 2011 we won the Queen’s Anniversary Prize for our world-leading research into the sustainable provision of safe water. This is the most prestigious honour a UK university can attain.
Few universities can match our ability for enterprise.
This is the third time we have won this prize: in 1996 the award was given to us for our pioneering work in satellite technology, while in 2002 the prize was given in recognition of our world-changing innovations in lasers, ion beams and optoelectronics.
Whether it’s supporting our students and academics as they seek to turn their ideas into successful business propositions, working with business and industry to share our expertise for everyone’s benefit, or creating our own ‘spin-out’ companies to get the results of our worldclass research out into the world where it belongs, our naturally entrepreneurial culture has achieved success after success.
120 years: A history of shaping the future We recently celebrated the 120th anniversary of our foundation. The institution has evolved significantly in that time, but some things have remained constant. We strongly believe that we should turn the new knowledge we generate into practical innovations that improve people’s lives, and we strongly believe that our students and academics should make a real impact on the world, for their own benefit as well as the great advances they can help bring about. These are the attitudes that most clearly define us, and have done so for over 120 years.
Number 1 2
In 2012 we completed a memorable clean sweep by moving up the rankings in all four of the main university league tables, including an impressive 20-place rise in The Sunday Times University Guide.
Figures from the Higher Education Statistics Agency (HESA)
National Student Survey 2011
WhatUni? Student Choice Awards
Our students gave us a strong vote of confidence in the 2011 National Student Survey, with an 87 per cent overall-satisfaction score. This is a 5 per cent improvement from the previous year that puts us on course to achieve our ambition of being the best university in the country for student satisfaction.
We secured top-ten positions for eight different categories in the 2011 WhatUni? Student Choice Awards, including Overall Rating, Accommodation, University Facilities, and Courses and Lectures. As you would expect, we won top spot for Job Prospects.
“ The University produces high calibre students, well prepared for careers in their chosen industries. Their academic achievements, well developed competencies and high level of industrial placement participation make them extremely employable.” Nathan Broadbent, BAE Systems

Professional Training placements
When you come to Surrey, we make a wealth of exciting challenges and experiences available to you. What’s more, we expect you to take as many of these opportunities as you can.
We are extremely proud of our Professional Training placement programme.
In return, we help you to learn from them. That’s how we know you’ll leave here a more impressive individual, with personal development and a professional attitude unmatched by graduates from any other university. Seizing opportunities
What are you made of?
We’ll make sure your studies are enjoyably challenging, but we know that’s only half the story.
So if you want to prove you can organise and inspire other people, we’ll help you to get involved.
We recognise that you don’t go to university just to study, and we know that you want to leave here with more than just another good grade to add to your CV. That’s why we push you to take all the opportunities we offer, both academic and non-academic.
Want to show your maturity and learn how to negotiate? We’ll train you to act as a mentor to your fellow students, or to speak for them as an academic representative.
But just as importantly, we’ll make sure you know how to reflect on your experiences, how to learn from them and how to incorporate the lessons into your own development.
Want to prove you can handle responsibility and manage a budget? Stand for election at the Students’ Union, or take on the running of a society. Need experience of leadership and public speaking? Get involved with the Union’s own training programme by learning new skills and then becoming a trainer to pass them on. Initiative is important, so why not put on a play in our brand-new Arts Centre? Want to develop your confidence? Become a presenter on the students’ own TV station or get on the airwaves with GU2 Student Radio. We offer workshops in study methods and career advancement. We give you opportunities to practise networking. We even have an entrepreneur-inresidence to advise you if you want to start your own business while you’re here. As a Surrey student there’s no real limit to what you can do when you put your mind to it. But it’s up to you to make it all happen.
Not just because we’ve been doing it for a very long time. Not just because it’s world-famous. Not just because it’s still one of the best programmes of its kind in the world. It’s also because of the transformational effect it has on the people who take part in it – people like you. Our teaching staff will tell it to you straight – they can spot final-year students who have just returned from one of our Professional Training placements as soon as they walk into a room. They’re more confident. They get stuck in. They take the lead. They’re more professional.
8
Always with you Then, unlike other universities, we don’t just leave you to fend for yourself for a year when you’re on placement.
Our prestigious placement partners also tell us that Surrey students stand out among their peers.
Whether your placement is in England, Australia or Spain, you will be visited several times by a current member of the teaching staff from your department.
These organisations recognise Surrey students as the ones who are well prepared, professionally aware, passionate about their own development and eager to show what they can do.
What’s more, you can be sure that your placement is a real job, with real responsibilities on real projects. We simply won’t put our good name to anything less.
As organisations increasingly use placements as extended interviews for future high-flyers, this is exactly the impression you need to be making.
Unique
Making an impression
A bright start We get you thinking about what you would like to do right from your first few months with us, because not all placement years are alike. Some students spend them with a UK company or professional organisation, some go abroad, others take on projects with research organisations, and so on. We’ll help you to start the application process early too – some of our students spend a summer as interns with their eventual placement providers.
Uniquely Surrey
Preparation steps up a gear in your second year, with special modules to get you ready for the workplace.
Professional Training placements are an integral part of our degree programmes. Almost every Surrey undergraduate can choose to do a Professional Training placement, regardless of degree subject. That’s unique. No other university anywhere in the world has a placement programme like this. As a result, no other university has professional, experienced, seriously impressive graduates like ours. That’s the difference Surrey can give you. That’s what really makes us proud.

“ I have just completed my placement year at the Four Seasons Hotel in Hampshire and am currently in my final year of degree studies.”
I believe doing my placement year in an international company like the Four Seasons Hotel has opened up worldwide opportunities for me and my future career. It has also given me the chance to work in different areas and see how a worldrenowned hotel operates. I am really enjoying my time and I am also learning a lot from my everyday duties, as well as from the hotel’s excellent training schemes.
My degree is under the School of Hospitality and Tourism Management and there is a professional training tutor who helps undergraduate students to obtain their placement opportunity and who also looks after the students throughout their placement year. “ The tutors at the International Study Centre are excellent and the classes are small, so it is a great learning environment.”
I am very happy that I chose to study the International Foundation Year at the University of Surrey International Study Centre because it provided me with fundamental knowledge required for the subjects I am studying on my degree. I have joined lots of societies and clubs at the University. There are so many to choose from and this has helped me make friends from the UK and all over the world. Immersing myself in the UK education system has also been a great way to improve my English.

Living in Guildford
A beautiful place to live
The University campus, the town and the surrounding area provide a safe and pleasant place to live.
A beautiful lakeside campus. A flourishing multicultural academic community. A lovely secure town among the stunning green hills of the countryside just outside London. It must be Surrey.
A frequent bus service linking campus with the town centre runs late into the night, and the local area is cycle-friendly too. The campus and Courts of Residence are patrolled by our friendly Security Team, whose on-site office is always open to visitors and staffed for phone calls.
A sense of community
Student societies
Our friendly community encourages a real sense of belonging. With over 140 nationalities all playing a role in campus life, you will discover a lively, dynamic atmosphere that enriches the student experience for all.
Get involved with our student societies and you’ll have the opportunity to meet new people, try something different and maybe even start a lifelong passion. Just ten minutes’ walk from campus, Guildford is an exciting mixture of historical, cultural and modern features. Whilst it offers all the convenience of a modern town, you’ll also feel as safe and included as in any village.
For further information, please look online at: www.ussu.co.uk/clubssocieties
Guildford’s cobbled High Street, provides the perfect setting for a day’s shopping.
Our students come from a range of backgrounds. Many people start their degrees straight after school or college, but we also welcome mature students who have spent time outside formal education. We provide opportunities for people from all areas of society who want to study at university and who have the ability to succeed in their chosen subject.
Time to relax Surrey’s staff and students work hard to rise to the challenges of study and research, but once the work is done it’s time to relax, socialise and make the most of leisure time. Ask any of our current students and they’ll tell you that being part of the Surrey campus community helps keep the work–life balance just right. Almost all our classrooms, labs, research facilities and social venues are located on campus – and our Sports Park is only a short walk away – so you won’t waste any time switching from study to socialising. Having everyone on one site also means you’ll bump into friends and get to know people from all our degree programmes. Our students tell us they find the University just the right size – there’s always someone new to meet and opportunities to pursue, but you’ll never feel lost in the crowd or without a friendly face.
Your campus environment This is a wonderful, safe environment in which to live and learn: • Carefully tended gardens and leafy parkland • Over 300 different types of tree and 1,000 species of flowers • Vibrant green playing fields • A picturesque lake • Striking architecture and public art • Just a stroll from both the centre of Guildford town and the beautiful green landscapes of the Surrey Hills Imagine listening to music in the sun, studying in the shade of an exotic tree or enjoying a barbecue by the water with friends. Our pretty lake provides a quiet place away from work and study, whether you need a relaxing afternoon off or a quick break in the University grounds. It’s a great place to meet friends and colleagues or to find a quiet spot by yourself, and you will often see students, staff and visitors taking a stroll, reading a book or feeding the ducks and carp.
Shopping and socialising
Down one of the many side streets you will discover exclusive boutiques, independent shops and cosy cafés. There are also two shopping centres, The Friary Centre and Tunsgate Square, both of which are just off the main street. If it’s food you’re looking for, we have a range of international restaurants, trendy independent eateries, as well as English pubs, stylish bars and the traditional kebabs and takeaways. The town boasts: • Major regional theatre and performance venues such as the Yvonne Arnaud Theatre • Community arts, comedy, music and cabaret venues such as the Electric Theatre • Some of the best shopping in the South East • Parks and lido • G-Live concert venue • Lively nightlife with over 70 pubs, bars, restaurants and cafés for all tastes and budgets
If you want to take in a sporting event, you’ll find top ice hockey, netball and basketball teams in the town and there are relaxing walks and bike rides along the banks of the River Wey.
Exploring further London is only 40 minutes away by train, putting world-class shopping, culture, sport and nightlife right on your doorstep. Great transport links from the railway station nextdoor to campus put the historic ports and sea air of the South Coast within easy reach, or you can explore the Surrey Hills and its quaint villages by bicycle or car. Airports – including Heathrow and Gatwick – are close by when you really need to get away from it all or fly home for the holidays. The region is rich in heritage, culture and great locations for a day out. Quick trips and places to visit include: • World-class sporting venues – Wimbledon (tennis), Twickenham (rugby union), Epsom and Ascot (horse racing) and The Oval (cricket) • The Tower of London, Hampton Court and Windsor Castle • Kew Gardens • Theme parks – Thorpe Park and Chessington World of Adventures • The remains of Guildford Castle, built by William the Conqueror shortly after 1066 • National Trust sites – afternoon tea at Box Hill or Polesden Lacey • The Lightbox (gallery and museum)

University life will probably be your first experience of living on your own away from home. When you start you can join a programme of activities designed to introduce you to various aspects of the University and your new student life. You will meet staff and other students, take campus tours, join the Library & Learning Centre, Students’ Union, sports clubs and societies.
The International Student Office provides information and support, which is uniquely relevant to international students. It currently helps over 3,000 students from 145 different countries in areas such as immigration, work permits, police registration, opening bank accounts, part-time work and liaison with embassies and high commissions overseas.
Student Health Care is a nurse-led service providing health information, advice, support and a variety of clinics run by specialist nurses.
The University of Surrey is a vibrant multi-faith, multicultural community.
We will do our very best to support you and help you feel at home.
Personal support To help you get the most out of your university experience, you will be assigned a Link Tutor whilst at the International Study Centre. When you move to your degree, a personal tutor will be on hand to offer you guidance and support throughout your time with us. Our student sabbatical officers are actively involved in student welfare and educational issues. You can call on them to discuss any personal issues and get advice on your rights and financial concerns.
We liaise closely with the Students’ Union in providing a wide range of activities for all international students. There is an end-of-year lunch for all those who are staying on campus at that time and the i-Festival, once a year, provides a chance for all students to experience and learn more about other cultures and traditions. Please check our website regularly for up-to-date information for international students: www.surrey.ac.uk/international
Arrivals Day
Medical Centre The Guildowns University Medical Centre is situated on campus and open throughout the year.
The Centre for Wellbeing Counsellors at the Centre for Wellbeing are on hand to deal with any personal, relationship or emotional concerns you might have. Staff are experienced in working with students from a broad range of cultures and nationalities.
We have a network of chaplains drawn from a range of spiritual traditions and religious communities. Facilities are available on campus for quiet contemplation, worship and prayer for individuals and groups. This is primarily within our nondenominational Quiet Centre.
Students with disabilities We provide a number of support services for our growing population of students with additional needs. Our services are coordinated by Additional Learning Support, and staff are happy to discuss any requirements you may have. For further information visit: www.surrey.ac.uk/als
On Arrivals Day you will be greeted by ‘Freshers Angels’ (our student helpers) who help you find your way around and provide a friendly and welcoming point of contact. This helps settle you in very quickly, as from your first day you are immersed in our friendly campus environment. Senior Residents or Mentors are appointed within our student residences, and can give you the benefit of their experience at the University to ensure you have an enjoyable time. They play an important part in generating our community atmosphere.

“ The University of Surrey is a beautiful campus and it’s great that the International Study Centre is at its heart. The staff at the International Study Centre are very welcoming and friendly, so as soon as I arrived I felt at ease and happy with my decision. “ During my time at the International Study Centre, I improved my English language level and university study skills which I have found useful in my degree studies.”
I learned how to research, write and construct academic essays and also the skills of skimming and scanning which is fundamental to tackle the large amount of reading required in my degree studies. As I was aiming to start my degree in Sociology, I also did Sociology units at the International Study Centre which prepared me for the first year of my degree. I’m having a great time at Surrey and the best thing so far is I have had the opportunity to set up a football club. We have quite a few members in the club and we have a lot of good memories together.
I chose to come to the UK for its good environment and opportunity to improve my English. The UK is also one of the best places to study Sociology. I chose Surrey as my friend had recommended that it is an excellent place to live and study. “ I started the International Foundation Year programme at the International Study Centre in 2008 and moved to my chosen degree in Hospitality and Tourism. I can’t believe I have now graduated.”
Looking back, I was working so hard and I thought that my graduation was so far away that I would never see it. But now I am standing here in a gown. It’s fabulous!
It’s priceless; it’s like the most important thing you can get. It’s a great education. As a final message I would like to say come to Surrey and enjoy your life!
I would advise other young people to really take advantage of such an opportunity and to understand how this will help them in life in the future. The knowledge that they will get if they come to the UK to study will get them a long way.
