PREP FOOTBALL PREVIEW 2018

A New Era

I

t’s a new era for the Turlock Journal’s prep football coverage as the realignment is set for all athletics in the Sac Joaquin Section, most notably, Turlock and Pitman join a newly constructed league — the Central California Athletic League — along with Modesto, Enochs, Gregori and Downey High.

Hilmar welcomes Livingston into the Trans Valley League while Denair and Delhi continue their progress in the eight-team league.

Turlock Christian has a new coach in Rich Goodwin, who is the former Denair

players. This year, each squad selected one player to represent their team on the cover. Turlock High has Garret Fountain representing his team on the cover, a San Diego State commit that stands over 6-foot-3 and weighs over 210 pounds. Payton Bass, a 6-foot-3 running back represents the Pitman Pride. This year he carries the same number (15) as his brother Devan Bass once did with the Pride and he is expecting just as big a season as his brother had during his senior campaign in 2016. Hilmar High has one of the fastest running backs to ever come out of the program in Isaac Sharp, who runs a 4.5 second 40-yard dash. Sharp was arguably the best postseason back in the Sac Joaquin Section a season ago after he helped his team win the Division VI championship. Denair’s star running back Hunter Musgrave could very well be one of the most

head coach and new Athletic Director for the Eagles program. Coming off an unforgettable 2017 campaign, this year’s group of football players are full of talent with many college-quality

complete and talented backs in the entire Stanislaus District and is expected to have a monster year as the local product fights to earn a collegiate scholarship to a Division-I school he says. Turlock Christian has Evan Muller representing this team after his squad won four games, the most since 2009. Delhi’s Kevin Nieto is the face of this year’s Hawks team that is expecting to continue their progress. Stay informed with all your local high school teams this season in the print edition of the Turlock Journal or at turlockjournal. com. Game highlights and previews are also featured in the Journal’s award-winning show “The Blitz,” which over the past year reached new audiences, gaining state recognition from the California Newspaper Publishers Association. PREVIEW: The Turlock Bulldogs preseason and league schedule could not be any more challenging. The depth of the Bulldogs squad, along with talent, and undeniable size, has them capable of competing against anybody on their schedule. Thankfully, Peterson, who was the CCC Coach of the Year in 2017, returns several allleague selections and Division I prospects including Garret Fountain (San Diego State). “I feel like this team we have speed, and it’s going to be good and our offense is clicking better than last year and it will be good,” said Fountain. “I didn’t post about signing too much, for various reasons, but I just wanted to get it out of the way and I don’t focus on that too much I just want to go out and work hard with my teammates and prepare with them and work a little harder every day, work harder than I did the day before.” Not only will Fountain have to rely on his line to anchor it all — led by Everett Johnson (Cal)--but also second year quarterback

Jonah Kosakiewicz who may not have reached his potential last year despite leading the offense into an undefeated year in the Central California Conference. Last year, Kosakiewicz was the CCC’s Best Offensive Player. The team also returns lineman Michael Jeffus, who was the CCC Lineman of the Year in 2017 and also earned a medal at state for wrestling back in early March as a heavyweight, finishing in the top eight in California. Jake Dirkse is heavily leaning towards playing ball for the Army Black Knights (Division I), who represent the United States Military Academy in college football. Another top player is Caelan Flowers, who is the right tackle for the ‘Dogs. Turlock could very well be one of the top contenders to win the first ever Central California Athletic League title heading into the new year but it will depend how they come out of their gauntlet preseason health-wise considering all five of their preseason opponents had significant winning records that included 50 total wins,

with two teams with 12 victories (Reno High and Central). All five of them made the playoffs in 2017 that included Freedom, Sheldon and Tracy. Four of five were ranked in the top 79 in state, Reno was 5th when the year ended, ending the year in the Nevada State semifinal game. “Definitely going to toughen us up and realize we have to play faster and at a different level, but it will prepare us I think,” said Fountain. “It’s a tough preseason schedule but that is good for us, coach really wanted to toughen us up and get us ready, I am pretty excited for it. Yes, we are going against some really tough programs, but we just have to go out and prepare and play our game and step it up a level and play hard, play fast and get to the ball…prepare each week one game at a time.” Once play starts in the CCAL, things won’t get any easier against Downey, Modesto, Enochs, Gregori and then Pitman to end things, so the ‘Dogs are one of the teams that has to make sure they bring their “A” game every single night.

PREVIEW: The Pitman Pride join the newly established Central California Athletic League this year after competing in the Central California Conference since their inaugural season in 2004. the Pride have never had a losing season at the varsity level since their first year and they are hoping to bring that program consistency into the CCAL. The Pride are coming off their worse regular season in program history, as they finished the 2017 season with a 5-5 record, failing to win at least six for the first time. But this just makes the Pride hungrier for redemption this season. Head coach Tom Tyler returns most of last year’s team, including 6-foot-3, 210-pound back Payton Bass and 6-foot-2 quarterback Treyton Fair, who could very well compete to be one of the best at his position in the CCAL this upcoming year. “Last year we didn’t do as well as we planned but going into this year, our senior year, we have to push hard in the weight room or the field but push hard and train better,” said Bass. “I am pushing myself at home, in the weight room and everything.” Tyler will continue to rely on the Pride’s running game if they hope to achieve and continue success despite Pitman graduating 29 players from last year’s roster. Running back Jakob Partida is back for his senior season after he tore up the field alongside Bass with the juniors breaking out through the year. “We (Jacob Partida and I) tell our team WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 22, 2018

to train hard and get ready for the games since we have some tough teams we haven’t had in league before so we have to train harder,” said Bass. Following their five-game preseason lineup is a rugged CCAL schedule that has the Pride kick off the inaugural season on the road against Enochs on Sept. 28. “We have to train hard and practice on the field and we have to get that CCAL title and do better than last year,” said Bass. “We struggled a bit last year, missed field goals, messed up plays, dropped catches, but I just know we are making things better this year. I think we got better, we’ve been practicing really well this summer.” Last year was a season that could definitely be forgotten despite accumulating a winning record of 4-2 in their last year competing in the CCC. Unfortunately, the Pride also saw themselves on the losing end of close games, including a one-point loss to Pleasant Grove and a one-score loss to Lincoln of Stockton. The seniors on this year’s team make up over 70 percent of the 50-player roster. There are only nine juniors listed on the roster. Speed won’t be an issue as they have several fast athletes on the squad that includes Isaias Aguilar, Marcus Garza, Ricardo Aguilar, Joseph Vasquez, Jaron Azevedo and Denzel Steckwren. Look for the winning tradition of the Pride to continue and the possibility of a CCAL title is definitely there, but facing teams like Turlock, Gregori and Downey High make that task a challenge. 8

PREVIEW: The 2017 Sac-Joaquin Section Division-VI Champions are back and looking for a repeat season, but in football, especially in the Trans Valley League, it won’t be an easy task. There is no doubt that the Yellowjackets of last fall were the talk of the section when it came to football and they return their one-two punch in the backfield with Justin Rentfro and Isaac Sharp, who are expected to take most of the carries on the offensive side. The Yellowjackets lose only a handful of players, returning the entire offensive and defensive line. “This year, obviously, we are expecting a good year, but really right now what we are trying to focus on is going one game at a time,” said Sharp. “We don’t want to get big headed but I think most importantly is to know we are good, but not say anything… silence kills.” Consistency is something that head coach Frank Marques has been able to get from his teams over the years. The Yellowjackets have reached four Sac-Joaquin Section Championship games in all odd years (2011, 2013, 2015 and 2017). They won two, in 2011 and 2017. Now they want to break that odd season record and add one to the even year; but it’s going to be more challenging with a target on their backs. Treven Crowley is coming off one of the more memorable prep baseball seasons this past spring and is expected to take on

the duties as a utility player and backup quarterback to Ryan Teixeira, who is the younger brother of former quarterback for the Yellowjackets Daniel Teixeira. The line is anchored by Nick Aguilera and Jared Collier, who come back to lead a line that also has returner Jake Diaz in the trenches. “I feel this year we really have a running back tandem, I mean we are definitely going to go off this year, we have a new quarterback coming in Ryan Teixeira,” said Sharp. “He has a great arm and is looking good, runs the ball like a running back, he is definitely a dual threat.” Last year, as a No. 6 seed, the Yellowjackets upset No. 3 Summerville on the road in the opening round, followed by an upset over No. 2 Escalon in the semifinal that launched them to the section final. In the finale, Hilmar managed to avenge their regular season loss to Modesto Christian after they dominated them from the onset and won 42-13 in the Sac-Joaquin Section Division-VI championship game. Hilmar earned a berth in the state playoffs and hosted an undefeated Strathmore— future state champs—in what resulted in a wild double overtime ending that saw the Yellowjackets fall by a point, 53-52. “We definitely are expecting playoffs, definitely for sure for sure expecting playoffs. We like having that target on our backs, keep gunning for us,” Sharp added.

PREVIEW: Turlock Christian is fully revamped. From a first-year Athletic Director to a plethora of new head coaches across the board in various teams for the Eagles — including football. Last year the team went through two head coaches and finished with former Denair High head coach Rich Goodwin. Goodwin led the Eagles to four victories, including two of the last three games, making it the program’s most wins since 2009 when they captured six victories. “Last year was a good year. We were very proud to send the seniors out with a bang (beating Western WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 22, 2018 12

Sierra for Senior Night). Even though we lost our head coach early in the season, we were grateful for Coach Goodwin stepping in and stabilizing the ship, so to speak,” said TC’s Evan Muller. “It’s always exciting when football rolls around. I am super excited to play this year, it being my senior season. With that being said, this year brings around new responsibilities, specifically in leadership.” The Eagles may have lost a number of outstanding players who helped win those games a year ago, but they also see their roster filled with talent and an ability to perhaps repeat or better last year’s peak per-

formances. Evan Muller is one of the returning members for the Eagles and his role as one of the leaders has been evident. “The team outlook for this year is one of optimism,” said Muller. “We lost some good players, but I’ll go out and fight with whoever decides to step up alongside me. It’s been a huge learning experience this summer for some of the guys, but we have the potential to make some plays this year.” Some of the other fouryear players include Kojo Bekoe-Sakyi, who is going to make some plays on both sides of the ball says Muller. Also look for senior Gage Schaber as

well. “Fellow senior Gage (Schaber) is going to wreak havoc. He has seen a huge growth in his game this offseason. One player to watch that I am excited about Liam Jones as well,” said Muller. “This is his first year out but he looks like he has played for years. Personally, just having the ability to play this great game makes it a good year. Obviously, winning makes the game more fun, and I really want to win the homecoming game again. I believe it is our last game of the year, and I want to end my playing career on a high note after four strong years of playing varsity football for TC.”

PREP FOOTBALL PREVIEW 2018

PREVIEW: Denair High running back Hunter Musgrave is coming off an outstanding junior campaign with the Coyotes as he was a first-team AllJournal selection in the fall. Standing 5-foot-11 and weighing over 180 pounds, Musgrave will be the anchor of the team and head coach Anthony Armas is expecting a big year from him. “I had over 1,000 yards rushing last year, but personally, my goal this year is I expect to go over 2,000 all-purpose yards and probably 25-plus touchdowns. As a team, I hope we get deep in the playoffs because we almost have every single player from last year. We are only losing about three or four players from last year so I expect to make it to sections.” In order to do so the Coyotes will also have to rely on the line play,

an area of expertise for Armas and his coaching staff. Prior to joining the Coyotes, Armas was part of a successful and winning Pitman Pride staff. He has brought his knowledge over to Denair, where he made national headlines during the 2016 fall season when the team had a winning record and made a playoff run, with as little as 13 varsity players. Defeated their league rivals Delhi, which were also coming off their best regular season performance in program history, made the season that much more memorable. Last year was also a season of rebuilding after the Coyotes lost a majority of that squad of 16 two years ago. They return a bulk of their squad this year, including most of their lineman on both sides of the field. “Armas wants the section and we all do too.

We all want that section title, that is the goal and it is possible for sure,” said Musgrave. The trenches will need to do work in order to allow Musgrave to break free, but we have seen this is definitely going to be a winning formula. Armas is a line coach and emphasizes the importance of time management and running the ball. Steffin Winston is also expected to be a scoring machine for the team and Drew Pritchard is back at quarterback. “On defense I expect us to be around the ball more than last year,” said Musgrave. “I think last year offensively we had most of our stats but this year I know that on defense we have some impact players like Scott Badal and Will Knox, big impact players this year and for offense it will be me and Steffin Winston carrying the load. I have already seen big improvements on the offensive line because last year is the improvement from our size. Everyone on our line has gone up at least 20 to 30 pounds, which is a big increase and almost all of our players have gotten bigger.” Scott Badal and Elvis Silva are also expected to be huge contributors as well for the Coyotes.

The Hawks have seen their roster lose some of the deepest talent they have ever seen come through the program. Most notably, the seniors they graduated were part of the best regular season in Delhi history in 2016 when they went 8-2 during the regular season. Luckily, they return Kevin Nieto who is a leader on the squad. “Last year, we had a graduating class of mostly seniors. This year we have about eight seniors going into this next year and we do have a couple guys come up from JV as well,” said Nieto. “We had some backlash with the 0-10 season at JV, but this offsea-

son it was about us trying to become better and the mantra at Delhi was being a family since there was talk about individuals, and you might hear that so we want to be a family.” The Hawks’ biggest offensive line, size wise, in recent memory is gone. Coach McCombs is lucky to have a solid coaching staff that includes offensive coordinator Erik Martinez. With a handful of standouts, the team is hopeful that they will be able to compete for a playoff berth in the always competitive Southern Athletic League but they will have to go through Orestimba, the defending SAL champs and their rivals Denair, which are expecting to have a memorable season. Delhi lost two league games by a combined two points last season, some-

thing they are keen to learn from this year. Repeating the most successful season to-date for the Delhi Hawks would require more grit and determination than they got from that 2016 squad, but anything is possible. A Southern Athletic League title is possible, but a playoff berth is more in reach. “The big goal is not just coming in and doing better than .500 but being better and making history and you can say that it will be difficult with the team we have, but we have to dream so big we scare some minds,” said Nieto. “You want to have real optimism, if we are not winning 10-12 games in a season, it’s not what we are looking for. High expectations and throughout the season we have to set a standard and we won’t take days off.”
