JAKE DAVIS In the digital age of highly reproducible photo imagery, Jake Davis presents images that are entirely unrepeatable. This ambrotype collection came from Davis’ creative endeavor spanning several years. The result is the very first collection of wildlife ambrotypes ever created. Ambrotypes are created from a traditional wet plate photographic process dating back to 1850. In marrying the advantages of cutting edge camera technology with the slow and methodical traditional wet plate process, a truly unique work of wildlife art was born. The unpredictable and spontaneous nature of the wet plate process guarantees that each plate is an original piece. “The medium has a unique way of conveying what feels like the spirit of its subject” Jake says. “Chances are you have seen one, even if you didn’t know what it was. It’s the photo of your great grandparents, Abraham Lincoln, or from the Civil War. It is one of the oldest processes. When you see an ambrotype you immediately think old, history, memories of what once was.” Viewing a grizzly bear or a bison in this medium feels as if they too existed only in stories and imagery. One can feel the sense of loss that would be if these symbols of the wild no longer called it home. “I want to inspire people and communities to preserve the resilient yet fragile wilderness areas we have left, as the world around us races ever so quickly into the future” Jake says. We don’t want future generations to learn about the wild through stories or imagery. They need to be able to experience it.”

BEN ROTH “I have been a student, traveler, adventurer, restaurateur, and artist. In art I found my path. I enjoy the exploration process of my ideas and their eventual prototyping and creation from raw materials and found objects. I discovered my medium while building restaurants. Although I studied some art in college, it wasn’t until I began to design and build with metal that I realized where I wished to focus my energy. The past few years, during which I have lived and worked as an artist, have proved to be a satisfying and continuing education. I’ve learned that clay, plaster, glass, wood, fiberglass, iron, steel, and bronze all work beautifully to give life to my ideas. I am now sculpting, building furniture, making wall-hung art and teaching young people art design and construction in Jackson Hole, Wyoming. Working as an artist in Jackson Hole situates me in the midst of a wild place and enables me to express my deep regard for the environment through my sculpture. My work continues to reflect the scale of the mountains, the impact of the seasons and the influence of the natural world. For me, art is a means of expression and also a way to have a positive impact on our interactions with the environment.”
