For What It’s Worth There’s something happening here. But what it is ain’t exactly clear.

I wasn’t around in 1966 when a Canadian-American rock band called Buffalo Springfield wrote the song For What It’s Worth. Today, the song has become famous. I know it well. You do too. They use it in all kinds of movies as a backdrop to 1960s themed anti-war, protest type scenes. The melody is eerie. The lyrics - absolutely perfect. There’s a man with a gun over there. Telling me, I got to beware. I think it’s time we stop. Children, what’s that sound? Everybody look, what’s going down? What you probably don’t know is that songwriter Stephen Stills, along with bandmates Neil Young, Bruce Palmer, Dewey Martin and Richie Furay, didn’t actually write the song about war. They wrote it about a series of riots, caused by a group of ‘counter-culture protestors’, occupying the Sunset Strip in Los Angeles. The local community, which consisted of annoyed residents and business owners, said these ‘hippies’ had no right to hang around, block traffic and cause disturbance and noise. The government agreed, saying it was ‘unacceptable’ and sent in police to enforce a series of curfews on the crowds and ultimately drive them out. In response, thousands of people came out and took to the streets to protest the lockdowns. They all claimed their human rights were being violated. They waved flags, carried signs and reportedly set a bus on fire. One weekend, over 5,000 people showed up to clash with police. Even celebrities joined in - including Sonny and Cher, who were photographed in front of a sign bearing a swastika. There were guns, billy clubs and violence. This went on for about two months. What a field day for the heat. A thousand people in the street. Singing songs and they carrying signs. Mostly say, “Hooray for our side”. Some people however, saw things differently. They saw it as a peaceful and lawful voice of opposition. But the media, siding with the government of the day and anxious to make headlines, stoked the fire even hotter. “There haven’t really been riots,” said the Monkees’ Micky Dolenz of the event. “In actuality, there have been demonstrations. But I guess a lot of journalists don’t know how to spell ‘demonstration’.” I think it’s time we stop. Hey, what’s that sound? Everybody look, what’s going down?

Fast forward to today, where Canada’s own Covid-19 battles and ‘unlawful protests’ have made headlines worldwide. Much like the protestors back in 1966, the consensus among ‘acceptable’ people was to do whatever it takes to move ‘em out - even if that meant declaring war on your own citizens. But unlike Los Angeles, the ‘Occupation of Ottawa’ was about people’s lives - and not just about the fight for your right to party. Then, in a shocking turn of events, we all watched in stunned horror as a real war broke out in Ukraine. A true state of emergency was declared as a hostile and violent occupying force invaded a peaceful nation in an attempt to overthrow the government - for real. Ironic. Sad. Devastating. We all know that the first casualty of any war, is truth. But as we dare to compare these two international incidents, I’m shocked at how it all unfolded. The ‘terms’ leaders use in their speech, the shaming of individuals by the media, and the promotion of lies and conspiracy theories has done damage to us all. The level of crude propaganda and advocacy on display has left us distraught and in distress. You can’t help but ask . . . what’s happening here? There’s battle lines being drawn. Nobody’s right if everybody’s wrong. Young people speaking their minds. Getting so much resistance from behind. Looking at both events, the similarities are scary. There are protests everywhere. Increased violence and anger as people choose sides. Families and friends divided. Hate and misinformation are flooding every social media channel. Mainstream media losing control of the facts. Governments losing control of the truth. People losing faith. Everyone losing trust. As he stared down the invasion of Britain during World War II, Winston Churchill said to his parliament: “Those who do not learn history are doomed to repeat it.” Strange to think that his words, and the words in this song, are back to haunt us in every way. For the first time ever, I’m truly afraid of what the future might bring. Just like 1966, inept politicians, on both sides, are playing it fast and loose with the facts - and our freedom. Media outlets are busy creating bias. And social platforms are making more and more money by promoting hate, division and disinformation. There’s too much noise and no sign of harmony. Maybe it’s time to take a page from the flower children of days gone by and ‘give peace a chance’. I know it sounds trite, but sometimes all you need are the right words. Stop spewing hate and reach out for a better, kinder level of understanding. Always remember - the song remains the same. But the ending is yet to be written. We can choose. We just need to stop. Listen. Make no sound. Because ain’t nobody wants what’s going down . . . here. For what it’s worth.

The Universe According to

Elon Musk

Beautiful mind or evil genius? Programmer, physicist or problem solver? Mad man, spaceman or statesman? Does anyone know the real Elon Musk?

ou can call Elon Musk many things. Selfish (maybe). Irreverent (probably). Out-to-prove-something (definitely). He grew up rich and bullied ...but also brilliant. Today he is principled. He is focused. And while his enigmatic style lends to his mystery, his awkwardly handsome grin makes it look like he’s still having tons of fun.

Y

And why not? He plays with real cars and real rockets for a living. He digs tunnels with massive machines, launches satellites into space, and now he wants to build a kind of ‘mind computer’ that will meld with our own human consciousness. He does all this - because he can. That’s the privilege you get when you’ve got brains and billions of dollars to spend. Musk knows the world is watching, especially when it comes to social media. His posts garner millions of views, and his influence is as massive as his ambition. Yet somehow, he seems to get a kick out of it all. Not in an arrogant, spoiled brat way - but in a way that seems to say ‘I’m here, and I’m watching you too’. One need only look at his Twitter account to see he has a fabulously quirky sense of humour. “It’s a nice day on Mars today,” he says as he posts a picture of the planet’s surface. He seems earnest yet wholly amused by all that happens in the world. It’s funny - until you realize he can, almost nonchalantly, ‘tweet’ the president of Ukraine about sending in Starlink satellites to save the day. Then it gets a little scary.

Never in the history of the world have ultra-wealthy private citizens held so much power and influence across the human landscape as easily and readily as today’s tech billionaires. Making money faster and more legitimately than any oligarch, warlord or cartel, Musk and his famous friends - like Zuckerberg (Facebook), Bezos (Amazon) and Dorsey (Twitter) - now potentially have master command over critical infrastructures, communications, transportation, information and monetary systems. They may even be able to affect the outcome of military invasions and global conflicts. What was once strictly controlled, monitored and regulated by governments and international organizations now runs free. It’s an interesting yet dangerous concept that begs the question - are we in safe hands? I’ve heard Elon Musk speak. Met him briefly, if you count a fleeting smile, as part of a group gathered at an event. As is the case with most powerful celebrities, he can win over a room easily. But there’s something different here. Something real. Something that genuinely makes you want to believe in the future and trust the words and the wisdom that lies behind the eyes. Maybe it’s because he has Canadian roots. Or maybe it’s because he wants his kids to grow up on Mars. Whatever it is, it is definitely compelling and exciting. So be it science fact or science fiction, here’s a little bit of info about this international man of mystery - and how he rules ‘his’ universe.

How did Elon Musk make his fortune?

What is SpaceX?

Elon’s first fortune came from a web software company he and his brother Kimbal started called Zip2. Compaq bought it in 1999 for a cool $307 million.

SpaceX is quite literally a private rocket company. They have been launching rockets and space cargo ‘vehicles’ since 2006 and now have 147 launches on the books. Things really took off in 2008 when they received a $1.6 billion Commercial Resupply Services program contract from NASA for 12 missions to the International Space Station. Subsequently, history was made in 2012 when SpaceX (a private company) docked at the station to deliver these supplies for the first time.

Later that same year, he started an online bank, which later merged to form PayPal. This was bought by eBay in 2002 for $1.5 billion. The rest, as they say, is history. Today Elon Musk has an estimated net worth of around US$224 billion and is considered the wealthiest person in the world. What other companies does he own? After the PayPal windfall, Elon created SpaceX in 2002 to manufacture space vehicles and transport services. In 2004 he joined Tesla Motors producing the world’s most famous electric cars. Despite almost going bankrupt in 2019, the CEO solved their “production and logistics hell” by opening a new production plant in Shanghai to mass-produce more cars.

What was once a ‘moonshot’ dream is now a reality with SpaceX taking private passengers into space. And Elon’s plans extend even farther with an ambition to return to the moon and eventually Mars. There’s even a rideshare program and booking calendar up on their website where you can look for flights - so check it out. Be warned, fares start at $1 million US.

In 2006, he created a solar energy services company called SolarCity, which was later acquired by Tesla and became Tesla Energy.

Lastly, there’s The Boring Company, where Elon is realizing the dream of his ‘Hyperloop’ high-speed train system. There’s an early version in operation right now in Las Vegas, except it operates with Tesla self-driving cars instead of trains.

Elon Musk demonstrattes the potential of the Neuralink system. The Neuralink computing device showed a pig’s brain activity as it snuffled around a pen on stage during a presentation in Aug 2020.

Elon’s Trouble with Twitter Millions of people are on Twitter, but none wield its power quite so effortlessly as Elon Musk. From cartoons and cryptic characters, he also answers calls for help from world leaders. Everything Elon posts is international news. He has publicly backed Dogecoin (a cryptocurrency that started as a joke) and also recently tweeted his support for the Canadian trucker’s ‘Freedom Convoy’. His words carry both weight and worry, especially for politicians. A recent post from March 4 left everyone scratching their heads: “Hate to say it, but we need to increase oil & gas output immediately. Extraordinary times demand extraordinary measures.” Then there are the more serious replies: “Starlink has been told by some governments (not Ukraine) to block Russian news sources. We will not do so unless at gunpoint. Sorry to be a free speech absolutist.”

Then there are his newest ventures OpenAI, which is a nonprofit research company for friendly artificial intelligence, and Neuralink, a neurotechnology company focused on developing brain-computer interfaces. “It’s like a Fitbit in your skull with tiny wires,” Musk says. “I’m confident in the long term it’ll be possible to restore somebody’s full-body motion.” He also says the future will be ‘weird’ and that we’ll be able to store our memories and reboot them from a backup into either a new body or even a robot body.

name ‘Grimes’, the couple have a son named X AE A-XII (pronounced Ex-ay-eye or Ex-ash-a-twelve). He is Elon’s seventh child (Musk having been married twice before). Sadly, Grimes and Elon have since separated, but they remain good friends.

NASA Administrator Charles Bolden, left, congratulates Elon Musk in front of the historic Dragon capsule that returned to Earth on May 31, 2012 following the first successful mission of a private company to carry supplies to the International Space Station.

Is Elon Musk Canadian? Yes - absolutely! Say what you will, but the connection is strong. Elon’s mother (Maye) was born in Regina. She has worked as a model for over 50 years and also holds a master’s degree from the University of Toronto. She met and married Errol Musk when living in Pretoria, South Africa, where she gave birth to three children sons Elon, Kimbal and daughter Tosca. The kids grew up there, but in 1989 Elon applied for Canadian citizenship and moved back to Saskatchewan. He also attended Queens University before transferring to the University of Pennsylvania, where he graduated in 1995 with a Bachelor of Science degree in economics and a Bachelor of Arts degree in physics. Elon’s other Canadian connection is through girlfriend and Vancouver born musician Claire Elise Boucher. Known by the stage

It all brings up the bigger question of censorship, control and the role of ‘Big Brother’ in our lives. But as we’ve all learned, there are different rules for different people in this world. And while governments, and the mainstream media, have totally lost control of the truth and, with it, the public’s trust - something tells me Elon isn’t about to follow the proverbial sheep to the slaughter. Overall, Elon Musk has an obligation to remain cautious. He absolutely has a right to his own opinion (everyone does). But a man who shoots for the stars also needs to remember the responsibility he owes to the whole wide world.

One tweet can cause international praise or panic. A power Elon Musk, and others of his status, use to their advantage.

FACTS

Of Ukraine, Russia and Vancouver More than 200,000 British Columbians trace their roots to Ukraine, independent of Russia since 1991 - but now fighting for survival. There are multiple political, sports and cultural links across the decades.

CANUCKS DRAFTED 01 UKRAINIAN GOALIE

SISTER CITIES BY 03 THE SEAS

Who is the only Canuck draft pick to have played with Pavel Bure and for a team in Wayne Gretzky’s hometown?

Vancouver’s first sister city was Odesa in Ukraine in 1944. On the occasion of the 44th anniversary, Vancouver sent a delegation in August 1988, led by acting mayor Jack Puil, Ald. Libby Davies, Ald. Jonathan Baker and even city Clerk Maria Kinsella. Puil had been on the 1969 junket.

Kyiv-native Sergei Tkachenko. The Canucks took him in the 11th round, 280th overall, in 1993’s entry draft. He never played for the big club, but spent time with the American Hockey League’s Hamilton Canucks and Syracuse Crunch. He started his career when it was Sokol Kiev now it’s Sokol Kyiv. He was on the 1990 World Junior championship roster with Bure.

02 THE SPIRIT OF ‘76

This time, the Odesa side expressed a desire for more from the relationship. “We signed a protocol agreement with Vancouver in 1986, and communications have not been kept up,” Mayor Valentyn Symonenko told reporters. He later went on to become deputy PM of Ukraine in October 1992.

04 GONZO VS GORBY Mikhail Gorbachev was the last leader of the Soviet Union before it dissolved. When the man behind glasnost and perestroika came to Vancouver in 1993, he was greeted at Science World by Nardwuar the Human Serviette, the CITR deejay from West Vancouver. Nardwuar offered “keep on rocking in the free world” in Russian and asked: “Of all the political figures that Dr. Gorbachev has encountered, who has the largest pants?”

Said Puil: “He’s a friendly chap (but) I find him very hard-nosed beneath that friendliness.”

BILL, BORIS AND

05 BARING IT ALL

USSR and Ukraine SSR were both part of Habitat ‘76, the United Nations conference on human settlement. That was also the year that Russia sent Soyuz 21 into space for 49 days.

Bill Clinton came with $1.6 billion in US aid to Russia for the historic 1993 summit at Canada Place in Vancouver with Boris Yeltsin.

One of the cosmonauts, Vitaly Zholobov, visited Vancouver in May 1977 with Soviet ambassador Alexander Yakovlev. They toured the Kosmos ‘77 Space Exhibition at Centennial Museum. Zholobov was born in Ukraine’s Zburjevka.

Summit fever gripped Vancouver. There even was a competition between Miss Nude USA and Miss Nude Russia at the Marble Arch bar.

WHERE IMAGINATION MEETS SKILL

When I saw the subject line of the email at 10:57am on Sunday January 2nd, I just knew it wouldn’t be good news. It was from the organizer of our Wednesday night North Shore beer-league hockey team. The subject line was - Michael and Caroline Sharp. The news was shocking and tragic. Ensuring a legacy for a West Vancouver couple killed in a sudden and deadly windstorm. Donations to the Caroline Helbig and Michael Sharp Memorial Fund will help support the community they loved.

Life’s Big Goals - By Mike Killeen

Mike (Sharpie) Sharpe and his wife Caroline Helbig had been killed the night before when an enormous tree crashed into their Horseshoe Bay home during a fierce windstorm. Fortunately, their son Alex was staying elsewhere that night. Our hockey group was gutted. For more than 20 years, Sharpie was the goalie for the Wednesday beer-leaguers. We had just played with him a few days before the terrible tragedy. He was a solid, 69-year-old goalie, but off the ice, Mike was also our barometer in the dressing room.

the world,” says Patrick Hogan. “He was acutely aware of the rhythm of the team and stepped forward when someone needed a personal gesture of friendship and support.” Sharp, a retired advertising executive, was also active in the community. A former president of West Vancouver Minor Hockey Association and a volunteer. “Mike helped raise over $300,000 for the Feed the Need program in West Vancouver after an anonymous donor pledged a $100,000 matching donation,” says friend and hockey pal Perry Braun.

“A huge loss to the North Shore hockey community,” says Wayne Feyer, who sent the January 2nd email. “Sharpie was a class act and the heart and soul of the dressing room.” “Mike was always ready with a smile and story from his and Caroline’s travels around

“Mike recognized the poverty within our community amongst the elderly. In fact, some seniors he cited were living on just tea and crackers or cookies. These funds kept the Seniors Centre kitchens open and serving a vital nourishing link just as Covid was escalating in early 2020.” “Caroline was building her passion for writing after seeing their son Alex successfully completing University in Waterloo,” Braun continues. She was recently published in the Globe & Mail, telling stories about their bicycle rides through Germany in the Globe’s weekend travel section. What’s happened since Mike and Caroline died is truly remarkable. With support from the couple’s families, Sharpie’s hockey buddies quickly helped establish the Caroline Helbig and Michael Sharp Memorial Fund in partnership with the West Vancouver Foundation. Two memorial scholarships, one in environmental stewardship and the other

“Our Wednesday night ice time is now officially ‘Sharpie Hockey’. We’ll never forget Mike and Caroline.” supporting a hockey player, are being administered through the Foundation. Caroline was passionate about the outdoors, and Mike volunteered tirelessly, coaching youth hockey in West Vancouver for many years. Further memorial grants recognizing their interests and passions will also be considered. “We are extremely pleased to see the support the community has shown for the Memorial Fund,” says Feyer. In just one week, the fund raised close to $30,000. “We are hoping to grow the fund to more than $100,000 so that it can serve as a legacy to this couple’s enduring spirits, friendships, and community contributions.” On January 29th, more than 30 players and friends gathered at the West Vancouver Community Centre for a memorial skate for the couple and formally launched fundraising efforts. Their son Alex was there and said hello to every player. It was an emotional but important evening. And after we left the rink, a few beers - of course. Our Wednesday night ice time is now officially “Sharpie Hockey”. We’ll never forget Mike and Caroline. And with the West Vancouver Foundation, we will help ensure a lasting legacy for this remarkable couple.

GIVE BACK TO YOUR COMMUNITY OR LEAVE A LEGACY GIFT FOR THE FUTURE We recognize that each gift is a unique expression of what you care about most, reflecting your values and hopes for the future. For some people, it’s an opportunity to share a good life through community granting. For others it’s an opportunity to support the things they care about most like health and well-being, education, the arts, and environmental sustainability. For many, it is to establish a legacy in memory of someone special reflecting their community contributions. The West Vancouver Foundation is here to help families, individuals, and groups establish funds with flexible giving options and match philanthropic goals with community priorities.
