Page Six Giving and Galas
It’s been almost 20 years since I wrote my first article for the newspapers. It helped start my career and I owe it all to one person who was willing to give me the chance to show them what I could do. That person turned out to be my editor and, eventually, my friend. Sadly, we lost him to pancreatic cancer three years ago. Gone too soon. I miss him to this day. Later that same year I held the hand of my aunt as I watched her battle ovarian cancer. Her fight was short (only seven months) and we as a family took turns sleeping on the hospice floor so that we could be there with her when she died. Another - gone too soon. I know I’m not alone here. I know many of us have been through this and unfortunately, will go through more. Happily, I have many other friends and family members who have beaten cancer and other diseases. Others are still fighting - and I think of them often and am inspired by their strength. The month of May marks the height of the spring gala season. For us, that means two or three events almost every night. And while we dress it up in fancy clothes and celebrate the occasions with gourmet dinners and champagne, I want to remind you just how important these events are. Pancreatic cancer and ovarian cancer are hard to diagnose and are not often discovered until it is too late. This is why they are incorrectly perceived as being a hopeless cause and, sadly as a result, not a popular one. AIDS and breast cancer once shared this same fundraising fate. But thankfully today, due largely to the generosity of the many people who donated money for research, there is both new hope and new life. Shockingly, heart disease continues to be the number one killer in both the US and Canada. According to the American Heart Association, cardiovascular diseases claim more lives than all forms
of cancer combined. In Canada, heart disease and stroke kills seven times as many women as breast cancer. You see causes need a voice - and that voice needs to be heard in order to spread awareness. It’s the reason you’ll always find the pages of these magazines full of the faces of people you know and the causes they support. They’re the friends and neighbours who move mountains in the hopes of one day curing all the cancers of the world. Be it poverty or pain, I believe we always have the power to help. It’s a theme I hope you’ll remember throughout this month and beyond. It’s a theme that I was reminded of yet again as I attended the Lupus Society Gala last weekend. As gala chair, I watched everyone enter the beautifully decorated ballroom at the Four Seasons. Snapping photos on their iPhones and sharing smiles - I suddenly had a thought. Turns out Apple spent $6 billion dollars in 2014 alone developing technologies like the iPhone. As a result, they have changed the world. And while that kind of money solves a lot of things, I believe it takes more than money to help make it all happen. We have made quantum leaps in technology and we can be more hopeful than ever. But solving problems takes passion. Finding a cure takes creativity. And the more people we get involved, the better chance we have of making it all come true. So please get up and get involved - and thank you for remembering to give.

Deepak Chopra has both shocked and rocked the world with his alternative theories of everything from medicine to metaphysics. A man of great thought, he can both provoke and entertain. Stating that he plans to live to be well over 100 years-old, and armed with an arsenal of hopeful hypotheses, he is making many of us rethink our own future, and future well-being. So is he a wise man far ahead of his time, or a pop icon celebrity who is out to challenge everything we know about our own brief history of time?

Deepak Chopra
Many say it all started with an appearance on the Oprah Winfrey Show back in the 1990s. A philosophical man from the start, Chopra found himself thrust onto the world stage as a type of spiritual guru who quickly gained a faithful following all around the world. Twenty plus years later, Chopra shows no sign of slowing down. He is the author of over 75 books, many of them bestsellers, and countless published articles. Opening himself up to both philosophical and spiritual criticism, he pulls no punches when taking on the likes of heavyweights such as Stephen Hawking, astronomer Phil Plait and more. An Indian-born American, Chopra was trained in traditional medicine and was Chief of Staff at the New England Memorial Hospital in the 1980s. Since then, he’s become a staunch advocate of alternative medicines and Ayurveda (Hindu traditional medicine). The mind-body connection is a strong and critical link in all his works. Speaking in Vancouver recently at the prestigious “Lift the Children gala, Chopra

met with VIPs at a special private reception where he spoke briefly and posed for pictures with invited guests. Small in stature but big on charisma, he was dressed elegantly in basic black complete with his new sparkly signature Swarovski crystal encrusted eye glasses (a gift from his children). Chopra is an easy person to like. He’s stylish, fun to talk to and conducts himself in a manner that is approachable and warm. His soft voice, gentle nature and kind smile easily charm friends and fans alike. When he speaks, he goes places most of us can’t follow. His language is basic, but the topics are existential and sometimes difficult to grasp. Using terms like “quantum healing” and “vedanta philosophy”, Chopra tries to bring it all down to a level of simple understanding. Problem is, this stuff is anything but simple and those of us who are not members of the Sheldon Cooper club will struggle to keep up. He expertly inserts humour and side stories about real life to help keep his audience grounded and interested in topics that quickly run the risk of turning complicated and boring for the casual listener. He truly wins over his audience when he starts to tell tales of his young grandson and his questions about dark matter, the earth and the ocean. Born to Indian son Gotham Chopra and his Chinese wife Candice Chen, Chopra claims the youngster is a prodigy in the making and that they all affectionately call him their little “Chindian”. Using an almost Socratic-like method otherwise, Chopra appeals to logical human nature to eliminate hypotheses he finds contradictory. And just like Socrates himself and the famous “I know that I know nothing” quote, he is firm in the belief that we, as humans, can’t really know that much about the universe, since it remains largely unexplored, unidentifiable and unknown. “Less than 0.01% of the Universe is visible,” he says. “The rest is dark matter or particle dust. That’s why we call it ‘nothing’. That’s why we seem to know nothing.” As obvious as this statement seems, grasping the metaphysical world isn’t easy at any level. It quickly becomes confusing and is not material meant for a light-hearted evening dinner chat.
11
His metaphysical teachings mystify most people, but when he starts talking medicine and the mind-body connection, faces do begin to light up.
Chopra states that when you take fecal matter from a healthy mouse and implant it into a diseased mouse, the diseased mouse can be cured.
accepted conventions of life, health and happiness. So the question remains. Is Chopra a charlatan making the most of the spotlight - or is he a true spiritual leader sitting on the brink of a new “theory of everything” discovery? We may never know. One thing is for certain. While most of us continue on with our day worrying about the mundane, Chopra is shaking things up with new concepts that shouldn’t be ignored. Love him or hate him, he definitely puts the “deep” in Deepak - and all while putting on a pretty good “Cho”. Continued on page 12
But unlike typical “shock-jock” media personalities who delve into outrageousness just for the sake of it, Chopra truly believes all he says and is compelling enough to make you want to believe it too. His stories involving fecal matter implantation in rodents however definitely got a reaction from the crowd. Describing an experiment involving mice, Chopra states that when you take fecal matter from a healthy mouse and implant it into a diseased mouse, the diseased mouse can be cured.
Abdul Ladha, left, Deepak Chopra and Craig Turner at the Pan Pacific reception.
He says the same is true when you take organic fecal matter from a younger mouse and implant it into an older mouse. And while Chopra stops short of advocating this method to help halt the aging process, the implication is definitely there. With statements like these, it’s easy to see why Chopra attracts criticism. But his ability to think outside the box and to challenge systems and symbioses that we think of as untouchable seems healthy enough on the surface. If nothing else, they are worth exploring first before rejecting.
Global TV’s Jane Carrigan and Chris Gailus.
Still, his detractors say he can cause harm. They put his popularity down to being nothing more than a trend that society has glommed onto into an age where people have an increasing dissatisfaction or anti-scientific attitude towards traditional medicine. Yet his followers seem open to at least listening to methods that might, in fact, change the way we think of all of our

Jazzing up a Classic When Max Zipursky sits down to play in the lobby of the Fairmont Pacific Rim Hotel, it’s on a Fazoli. And when OpenRoad Auto Group unveiled their $1 million Porsche 918 supercar at a recent invite-only event, again it was Max Zipursky and Fazioli that played along. In fact, Max Zipursky is one of the best jazz piano players around - so it only makes sense that he plays on one of the best pianos ever made. “As soon as you start playing, you’re immediately captured by the sound. Such a crisp and beautiful tone. It’s unlike any other piano,” says Zipursky as he sits thoughtfully at the keyboard. “I know it was created initially for classical players, however my idol Herbie Hancock plays jazz on a Fazioli. Anyone who sees one is immediately drawn to it. And now you see it more and more in the jazz world too.” Playing since the age of 15, Zipursky graduated with a Major in Jazz Piano from Capilano University. He has made several albums and plays with various groups and trios in some of Vancouver’s most luxurious locations and at several of the city’s most exclusive VIP affairs. As such, Max has had the privilege of playing on almost each and every style of Fazioli piano ever made, including the rare and stunningly beautiful 24 carat gold leaf Fazioli valued at $535,000. And while the pianos themselves are visually beautiful, Max and his music are proof that a Fazioli is truly an amazing instrument of inspiration through and through. “It allows me to take my music to places I never thought possible. It lets me express myself freely - and I find because of the extreme attention to detail, the outcome is beyond anything I could ever imagine.” This shared passion is evident whenever, and wherever, Max plays. There’s an inseparable and magical connection between musician and instrument which seems to cross all borders and speak all languages. “I guess music and the piano have been two of the main things that have been a constant in my life. I’ve made so many connections by speaking music. There’s no barriers, no real rules, - just raw passion.”
