“Delta side. Attack one.” “Copy that command.” “It looks like that fire is going to run the whole roof.” “Let’s get those guys out of there.” “Copy that. Backup has arrived. Stand by.”
The battle went on for what seemed like forever. The storyline went up and down. And when it was over, the men and women of both North Vancouver and West Vancouver’s fire department services had done everything in their power to save the lives and property of people they barely knew.
The sirens screaming down the street at 4am woke me up. They kept coming and coming and it was then I realized that something very big was happening.
For them it’s all in a days work.
Thanks to modern technology, listening to police, fire and emergency scanners is as simple as going on the internet. It was as easy as dialing up a music station. What followed though was dramatic and tragic and exciting all at the same time. Thankfully no one was hurt. This particular multi-alarm fire on Bellevue last month however did cause millions in damage and was deemed suspicious. It all but
For me it was a rare glimpse into a dangerous job that we, as members of this community, sometimes forget to acknowledge. It made me a fan all over again. And if they’ll let me, I hope to come by some day and hear more stories about what it takes to fill such big boots and risk so much. It’s called a fire fight for a reason. And while thankfully they are not called into service on such big events every day, it’s something I think about more often now as I realize that a battle with a furious and ferocious enemy is potentially possible at any moment.

With high energy performances and undeniable style, it’s hard to believe that they’re technically all senior citizens. But as Aerosmith’s latest Blue Army Tour ripped it’s way through small town BC, we are again reminded of how much the music industry has changed - and just how hungry fans are for a good live show driven by nothing but pure sweet emotion.
Aerosmith’s Steven Tyler on stage with guitarist Joe Perry and drummer Joey Kramer. Photo Credit: Yulia Grigoryeva / Shutterstock.com
From zero to sixty - without missing a beat
As Aerosmith lead singer Steven Tyler walks out on stage, the stadium erupts. Thousands of fans are on their feet cheering all the way from the front rows to the rafters. The familiar chords of a song written long ago ring out as girls, of all ages, scream and reach out to touch their idol. A consummate showman that would make PT Barnam proud, Tyler is the ultimate front man. Hair, makeup, lights, costumes. Over the top, but still on the mark, no stone is left unturned. Partnering with the best in the business, this “survivor” band includes seasoned veterans that know every trick in the book. Reinventing the past with lead guitarist Joe Perry, these former “Toxic Twins” still head up one of the most solid and economically viable live acts on tour today. With over 40 years experience under their studded leather belts, is it still all about the music? Are sequins, and sixty year-olds, sexy? In an industry dominated by downloads and digitization, are people desperate to keep in touch with Mama Kin? Vancouver music mogul Bruce Allen says yes - but he’s also quick to point out that the changes in the music biz, as a whole, are not quite as glamorous as all that. With electronic DJ beats and pre-mixed mashups all but extinguishing the live music club scene, the odds of a new band finding a voice are quickly diminishing.
11
NorthVancouver.com | WestVancouver.com “Album sales are way down - and the big money is in touring,” says Allen. “However the problem we have now with the young bands is twofold because they can’t sell enough albums to make touring viable.” Calling online streaming “cheap and disposable” Allen says it all doesn’t really work for bands on a touring cycle. “It’s become a song business rather than an album business,” he says. Ironically, older groups, some of whom have long disbanded but who have a large repertoire of hit songs, are the ones making more money than ever. And while they’ll never get radio play on anything other than the golden oldies station, Allen says they’re regrouping and touring to both record audiences and record profits. Names like Fleetwood Mac, Elton John, Bruce Springsteen, AC/DC and U2 are among the top grossing tours of the year. The Rolling Stones, each of whom are over 70 years-old, are also top of the list. And what’s the two things they all have in common? Big hits that everyone knows - and a big past that they’re glad has come back to haunt them. Exceptions to the rule include American sweetheart Taylor Swift and Vancouver’s own Michael Buble. Considered to be highly successful crossover artists in their respective genres, Allen says both Swift and Buble managed to beat the heat by starting out early enough in the cycle. They also managed to win the hearts of audiences by recording familiar standard songs that fans recognize as album favourites. This is especially true for Buble who has re-introduced practically all of Frank Sinatra’s hits to a new and younger audience. And while people of all ages and generations flock to hear their rock idols one more time, it also appears that smaller towns and venues are also back in vogue. Bigger isn’t necessarily better. In fact, the current Aerosmith Blue Army Tour has only hit three smaller Canadian cities thus far - Kelowna, Victoria and Fort McMurray none of which anyone would consider big time trading posts. Their roster of US towns fares the same - but it is yet to be seen whether that trend will hold as future dates and destinations may still be in the works.
However, thanks to the proliferation of newfangled luxury casino resorts and theatres, formerly famous groups like Culture Club, Lynyrd Skynyrd and Foreigner are selling out within minutes of tickets going on sale. And even with an average price tag of $80 - $125 per seat, and no guarantee of the original band members even being present, people seem happy to pay to re-live the music they still know and love. Some groups are so devoid of original members that they truly amount to nothing more than a tribute band in name only. Yet still the people pay to come. “It’s all about having that one great live music experience over again,” says Allen. And it’s a theme that cover band leaders like Jason Bonham, son of late Led Zeppelin drummer John Bonham, know very well. Playing to sold-out audiences all over the world with his Led Zeppelin Experience tour band, Bonham represents a kind of magical musical genesplicing that gives audiences more than enough to grab onto to keep it real. Meanwhile, as some people yearn for a blastfrom-the-past live show, a divergent group of beat makers are turning the tables in a different direction. Drone like in substance, and often appropriately called “trance” music, clubs all over the world are courting a new kind of live performance. Often armed with nothing more than a computer and digital CD player, famous house music DJs, like Deadmau5, Steve Aoki and Skrillex, are commanding big crowds and even bigger contracts. Playing at events, like the Electric Daisy Carnival in Las Vegas, these disc divas can draw over 150,000 people a day to a three-day festival. But unlike arena rock, these events are geared almost exclusively to the twenty-something masses. You’ll find very few father / son moments here, and absolutely no live guitars. Due in part to its “rave” party roots, the shows are often criticized for their association with the drug ecstasy and have also raised controversy among traditional musicians who feel it doesn’t deserve to be classified as live music. Tom Petty took issue with the whole scene in a 2014 USA Today article calling it “stupid” and saying it was nothing more than a “drug party”. “Watch people play records? You couldn’t pay me to go,” Petty said bluntly.
But love it or hate it, you can’t argue with the economics of it - or the fact that people want to experience it. More importantly, whether you long for guitars or Guetta, there’s no denying that the music industry is going through a new kind of identity crisis. And with a quick fix internet industry gunning even harder for that lucrative 16 to 25 year-old bracket, you have to ask - are we running a tortoise and hare race that will be rewarded over time, or are we simply waiting for the day the music dies. It all amounts to a strange twist of fate that has put the entire industry on it’s ear, while still managing to turn a deaf ear to the near exploitation of young musicians who now must literally pay to play in clubs - instead of the other way around. This dangerous devaluation in live music is what we should fear most. Without cultivating something new, we will have nowhere to turn but to the past. In another 15 years, who will have stood the test of time? It’s a question many are still trying to answer. Until then, bands like Aerosmith, and others of their same generation, have found a niche market full of fans still dreaming on. “I think the most important thing for an artist right now is they’ve got to have good songs and that’s hard enough,” says Allen. “But they have to spend time presenting themselves and people who can’t present themselves are doomed.” But without the survival of more local live music clubs, will we ever again see the rise of a Bryan Adams, Loverboy or even an Aerosmith? Without albums and records, will we ever again see a successful B-side? To borrow a page from the Beatles, perhaps it’s time to take a look on the flip side and hold a little “revolution” in support. Then, you can start, to make it better.

Does your home insurance take vacations?
If this happens, you might not be covered. If you leave a property empty for more than 30 days, even if you’re just moving out or in, standard home insurance won’t likely cover you for fire, theft or other loss. You’ll need additional coverage to make sure you can replace belongings or repair structural damage. Without proper insurance and the advice of a seasoned broker, your dream home could turn into a nightmare.
