Page Six I’ve Grown Accustomed to Her Face

“What has she done to her face!?!” It’s an expression I hear far too often – especially during gala awards season. This is the shock and awe expressed by the public as a Hollywood starlet steps onto the red carpet after an obvious ‘adjustment’ to her appearance. It’s not the only thing I hear. “Wow, she’s getting old,” is another good one. Then there’s the more reflective but equally inquisitive phrase – “Why did she do that to herself?” Sadly, it’s usually directed at women. Personally, it upsets me. And I’m not necessarily talking about the remarks. Let’s ‘face’ it - some people are mean. But for the majority of us, both men and women, we don’t ‘mean’ anything by it. It’s just that some of these show business transformations are quite extreme, to say the least. What upsets me is that with all the progress we have made, society still places a significant emphasis on what we look like, instead of the talents and substance we have inside. So, let’s break it down. All people age. It’s completely unavoidable and completely natural. Doesn’t matter if you’re a movie star, musician, sports hero or public figure. No one is immune. Youth is still widely celebrated and coveted, especially in the media and beyond. In fact, you’d be surprised how often I was told that a “woman in her 40s will have a hard time staying in the business,” – and I’m just a writer. Forget that we have experience and knowledge to share, it would be best to get rid of those crow’s feet – now! Still, regardless of age, sometimes we just don’t like how we look. But thanks to 2020 technology, some of us can afford to ‘adjust’ a lot of things - especially if you’re rich and famous and you think your job is on the line. Wrinkles, fat, eyes, lips, grey hair, muscles. We can buy it, change it, pump it up, or work it off given enough time and money. Just ask veteran CNN/Fox reporter and lawyer Greta Van Susteren whose dramatic plastic surgery made headlines. “I did this because I wanted to do it and for no other reason,” she said amidst speculation that the network had forced her into the change. I guess it’s a lot like what Professor Henry Higgins said when he was trying to transform Eliza Doolittle in My Fair Lady. “If you can’t appreciate what you’ve got, you’d better get what you can appreciate.”

06

So, is it a positive personal choice to change – or deep down, is it public pressure? Do we want to adjust what we look like to seek approval and acceptance, even from ourselves? Or are we maybe just like Eliza Doolittle in need of a Henry Higgins and the right environment? Is it true that beauty is only skin deep? Thanks to technology, cameras are now everywhere, and we’re busy filming ourselves doing everything and anything. Social media is a daily parade of performances only a mother could love. So, it isn’t surprising that young people are now going under the knife in record numbers. Platforms like TikTok and Instagram are full of image enhancing filters, and teenagers are preening and posing like high-paid centerfold models enhanced by the very same hair extensions, nose jobs, lip injections and breast augmentations seen on the silver screen. It’s concerning, to say the least. Meanwhile, in other news, women are again taking centre stage by making up 92% of all plastic surgeries performed (according to the American Society of Plastic Surgeon’s 2018 Statistics Report). In fact, an estimated 17+ million people spent over $16.5 billion last year alone, in Canada and the U.S. That’s a lot of Botox. Yet, while we struggle with our vanity, and our insecurities, whatever they may be - I think it’s important to know that substance is still the most essential quality in our lives. Lipstick and lashes are always fun, and confidence can come from looking good - but I like to think the real sparkle can only come from what lies inside. They can fix your eyes, but they can’t make them gleam. And lips only look good when they’re smiling. So fix what you want, but don’t let Hollywood be your guide. Invent your own brand of spectacular and go for it. Because happiness, laughter and health are the real beauty secrets here. Just ask Professor Higgins, who eventually fell in love with Eliza just the way she was. “I’ve grown accustomed to her face,” he sang as he realized all her so-called imperfections, were actually perfect as is. A good piece of advice to remember as we grow accustomed to all the things we have to ‘face’ in all that lies ahead. - Catherine Barr / cbarr@westvancouver.com

BRINGING LIFE-CHANGING CARE TO THE NORTH SHORE

Palms Springs (PSIFF) 2020 Awards season brings us the Academy Awards, Golden Globes, BAFTA and SAG - but stars know, a place in the sun always starts at the Palm Springs International Film Festival. On January 2, the 31st annual Palm Springs International Film Festival hosted another star-filled Film Awards Gala. This year’s most buzzed-about films and stars travelled to the desert to kick-off award season in style. Former Entertainment Tonight star Mary Hart once again served as the evening’s host, her 17th year in that position. Honorees were presented with either the John Kennedy “The Entertainer” statue or a stunning Dale Chihuly glass sculpture to mark the achievement. Palms Springs is no stranger to celebrity. And for those who venture there regularly, we all know that the desert holds more than a few secrets about fame, fortune and glamour. But as the awards season nerves take over, and with Oscar peeking around the corner, this night was custom built for everyone to relax and enjoy the moment. “Seeing everything finally come together was rewarding beyond expression. The entire team worked so hard for months, and we finally got to enjoy the fruits of our labour,” says Lili Rodriguez, Artistic Director. But that doesn’t mean it’s only for big wigs and A-list celebrities. “I think something that sets the festival apart from others is the fact that we are a cross between an “industry” festival and a consumer festival. We attract a lot of big names in international cinema, but we also make it very accessible to the public to come enjoy the films as well as interact with many of the filmmakers that come to the Festival to showcase their work,” says Rodriguez. “I’ve heard from various filmmakers that getting to hear questions from film festival patrons during our Q&As has been one of their favourite experiences.” In fact, the whole Festival is more of a local affair than ever before. “The Festival is a local favourite and a staple of the Coachella Valley, and I myself am a local, so we incorporated more local elements - from adding a local jury, [and] expanding the Local Spotlight, to inviting the Palm Springs Gay Men’s Chorus

Joaquin Phoenix, seen smiling in a special moment with his mom Arlyn, received the Chairman’s Award for Joker, presented by director Todd Phillips

for a special performance,” she says. “I think it is very important to have the community involved in the festival they love so much.” So with a nod to all the local flavour, and a star-studded look at the red carpet moments, one thing is certain - and that is Palm Springs never lets us down. The only hard part is deciding how to pick all the winners. May I have the envelope, please.
