Page Six Protest Song

I respect your right to protest - but please stop to hear my plea. There are others out there needing things your protest fails to see.

I respect your right to protest - but your terms are getting tougher. And people, friends and families are being made to suffer.

Some working people need your help to get on with their day. You cost them time and wages when your cause gets in the way.

Your actions, they have consequence. It comes at a great cost. And when you take from normal folk, your message just gets lost.

The man who does deliveries gets penalized when you, Block the street, defiantly. It’s not right that you do.

Please organize yourselves into the caring beings you are. Don’t block the trains. We need the goods that lie inside that car.

The lady needing doctor’s care, she doesn’t have much wealth. She’s missed her time and sadly now continues in bad health.

That doesn’t make us evil. That doesn’t make us bad. But destroying the economy - that just plain makes us mad.

That student trying to get a job, missed his interview. I doubt he’ll get a second chance, his prospects are but few.

I know you want attention, but something’s got to give. Please take some time to understand this is no way to live.

That little girl. She’s innocent. She doesn’t know your strife. But that cancer treatment she just missed was crucial in her life.

You plead your case and say that at the core, it’s human rights. But something this important shouldn’t end up in these fights.

Blocking transportation, trains and buses - makes no sense. And yet you say it’s just a little ‘inconvenience’.

I respect your right to protest - and I might support it too. But all of this disruptiveness makes it hard to do.

But little things add up, you see. And secretly you know, That tensions rise, and something’s gotta give, and it might blow.

The agenda changes constantly. It’s anybody’s guess. Sometimes we seem to suffer from our own short-sightedness.

And who’s that guy? He’s not from here. He claims he is much wiser. He’s come up to Canada, to be an organizer.

I think it’s time for something new, time for cooperation. Time to plan for something smart instead of just frustration.

It doesn’t matter where he’s from. He’s fighting for this land. Then more folks come. But wait - is this thing getting out of hand?

Blocking roads, disrupting lives, this method is passé. Cause no one hears the cries for help, they want you out the way.

Then other ‘leaders’ join the fray and set out other tasks, Yelling at the cameras as they hide behind their masks.

More and more, this method is undoing all the years, That we used to work together, and it’s only raising fears.

Yet some of you don’t quite agree. There’s anger and there’s hate. Then police arrive and slowly, things just start to escalate.

You’ve asked too much from some, and understanding’s at an end. You’ve only won more anger - when you could have won a friend.

All it takes is just one shot, one gun, one knife, one fire. And suddenly we have a war, which no one here desires.

I respect your right to protest - but now it’s time for you. To understand the cause is lost, when you don’t respect me too. - Catherine Barr / cbarr@westvancouver.com

But rejecting years of history, which is also closely entwined with establishmentarianism, isn’t easy. And the big question on everyone’s mind is - why? Speculation abounds. easier, especially when it comes to Prince Harry. In 1997, at the tender age of 12, Harry’s mother, Princess Diana, died in a tragic automobile accident. While being pursued by the paparazzi, her speeding car crashed in a Paris tunnel. Known as the “People’s Princess”, Diana was loved by the public - a fact that led to her being chased relentlessly by the tabloid press. Hounding her from the moment she became engaged to Prince Charles (Harry’s father), the attention was non-stop. Smart and resourceful, Diana nonetheless harnessed the power of her press to subsequently bring attention to many worthwhile causes. She is considered among the first to advocate publicly in high-profile campaigns, like the fight against AIDS and land mines. But even after her shocking divorce from Prince Charles, the tabloid press pursued her right up to the moment they chased her car into the tunnel that

fateful night. She was 36. Like many, Harry blames the paparazzi for his mother’s untimely death and has only recently revealed just how hard it has been for him to deal with the tragedy. Keeping it bottled up for years, the young prince, who is now almost the same age as his mother at the time of her death, is now an advocate for mental health issues and supports the Heads Together campaign with his brother and sisterin-law. It’s easy to understand then why Harry might be willing to step back from the spotlight in an effort to protect his new wife and family from going through the same situation. So now it’s time for a new life - and for now, that life appears to be here in British Columbia. Shortly after their announcement, Harry and Meghan took up residence near Victoria in a privately owned secluded mansion in North Saanich. Spot appearances by the duchess have included a downtown Vancouver women’s shelter and some shopping trips up the island. Still, for

forever remain part of an elite group of people living a rich and famous lifestyle. They will never be seen as ‘normal’ in anyone’s eyes no matter how hard they try, because the public doesn’t discern between being ‘rich’ and being ‘really rich’. Neither does the tabloid press which, despite the couple’s pleas for privacy, they will not get. Maybe they want to use their money

and fame to do good. Sounds good - but proceed with caution. No one can ever replace Princess Diana, nor should they try. And very few can pull this off successfully with the right balance of humility and hubris. In the end, the last thing we need is another family sideshow like the Kardashians. For now, and as is the trend, Harry and Meghan are being applauded by some for rejecting the old ways and trying to usher in change. But is exchanging one privileged lifestyle for another really going to work - especially if that new lifestyle involves Hollywood and all its cast of sordid characters? Many are worried about the effect this ‘Megxit’ will have on the monarchy as a whole. Is this the start of a leak in the dike that may lead to royal ruin? Will this start a flood of public outcry against the Royal Family and their relevance to modern society and the costs that go with it? If so, Harry and Meghan may find that if things don’t work out in the real world, they may not have a home to go back to at all. As Princess Diana was once heard to say, “being a princess isn’t all it’s cracked up to be”. And while we all know that fairy tales aren’t supposed to be true, somewhere deep inside, we still like to see a happy ending - especially when it involves a handsome prince and a beautiful bride who seem to have given it all up for love. And while Harry and Meghan are no longer young, or naive, we do hope that they are worldly and brave enough to fight for their version of a happy ending - even if that means taking it slowly and carefully. Because here in Canada at least, though it be a land far far away, we like to think that dreams really can come true. Catherine Barr / cbarr@turnernewsmedia.com
