Page Six Try to Remember It’s been 70 years since the end of World War II. Almost everyone who served in it is gone - but they will never ever be forgotten. Fortunately, we have lots to remember them by. Lots of stories, songs and letters written to loved ones. There’s also lots of books with great photos, maps and drawings. And even though cameras were harder to come by, there’s lots of real film footage too. One can only imagine what it would have been like if iPhones or
GoPro cameras had been available back then. There would have been so much more we could have seen and heard and learned - or would there? Every day I hear of someone losing their smartphone or digital camera. Multiply that all over the world, and that means there’s literally millions of memories being lost every day. Okay, so the lucky ones have everything backed up “somewhere”. That’s good. Except what happens when those devices become old, or you forget to pay your cloud membership? As most of us who’ve lost a hard drive know - your digital life can be wiped out in less than
a millisecond - and you end up feeling pretty devastated when it can’t be restored.
And while we continue to store our lives on flash drives that can be wiped out in a flash - we also don’t seem to have a very good overall backup plan for tomorrow. As we move more and more into the future - what happens to our past? How are people 70 years from now going to remember us when all of our history is stored on obsolete DVD discs? What useful remnants are we even capable of leaving behind? What will our greatgrandchildren have to hang onto when we can barely hang on to our own technology? Maybe the most powerful thing about the past is that it didn’t require any power at all. Pen, paper, printed photos and even parchment have all proven they can stand the test of time. No electricity or fancy gizmos needed. And
hats off to the ancients who got right down to it and carved things into stone. You guys rocked - literally. And while I roll my eyes at my aunt who still carries around her ratty old dog-eared address book, I feel extra dumb as I reach for a phone

We’d like to shed some light on home security.
The best protection? Look like you’re home. Discourage thieves and protect your home by making it look like you’re in. Install low voltage lights around the outside of your home, activated by light and motion sensors. Simple timers on key interior lamps can be set to come on and off when you would normally use them. Strong locks and secure windows are important. And a security system with posted sign out front is an excellent deterrent. Your home is more than just a building. It holds everything you value. Protecting it properly includes the security of knowing you have the right insurance policy.

But thanks to the talents of award-winning Vancouver producer/director Derik Murray, some of pop culture’s most iconic characters from the past are being brought back to life in a whole new way. Backed by US based SpikeTV network, the super successful “I Am” series is, without a doubt, reexamining what it means to have a life well lived. With names like Steve McQueen, Evel Knievel, Chris Farley and Johnny Cash on the list, you know it’s going to be a good ride. And with the right balance of boldness and beauty, and a steadfast commitment to creativity, Murray and his Network Entertainment team are doing much more than just chasing legends - they’re capturing the hearts of heroes and re-introducing them to a whole new generation.
An interview with Derik Murray
Photo: Michael Grecco Photography
They don’t make them like they used to or so they say?
Q - How did you get started in this business - and how did you come up with the “I Am” series idea. A - I was an advertising photographer and television commercial director and went into film and television from there. I produced and directed the Legends of Hockey series for several years, and focused on Canadian programming with names like Wayne Gretzky and Gordie Howe and focused mostly on sports. Then I created and produced Making the Cut. But at that stage of the game I realized that I had lot of interests outside of hockey. That there was a much bigger world out there. I started spending some time in the US and we got phenomenal response to our work. Our Facing Ali project attracted the attention of Lionsgate and SpikeTV, and was then shortlisted for an Academy Award, and that was the impetus for going ahead and focusing 100% in generating interest in our work and expanding opportunities in the US. That led to our deal with SpikeTV - and then that led to the “I Am” brand and the first episode which was with Bruce Lee. We have a slate deal with SpikeTV, so that led to our films on Steve McQueen, Evel Knievel, and Chris Farley. Q - You seem to have chosen people who live on the edge? People who were pop-culture pioneers in a way. Any reason why? A - It certainly starts with exciting characters who have great appeal to US, Canadian and International audiences. A little bit more of a male focus. The idea is to really come up with a series of films that are about personalities that have lived rich, full, dramatic, challenging lives. The idea is that we want to explore all different genres, whether that be within the Hollywood world or sports or music or comedy. So you’ll see with the new ones that are coming up that again we’re crossing over into different genres. We use a cinematic and contemporary approach and we focus on authenticity and family and people they grew up with and worked with - but we also include current pop culture icons and personalities.

NorthVancouver.com | WestVancouver.com Q - Every narrative seems to have a common theme of success to excess - sex, drugs, money and heartbreak. How do you break through that typical pattern to get to the real story within? A - That’s the key. Depending on the individual, the reality is we all have our personal challenges, whatever scale they are. What I’ve always looked for is what it took for them to reach that status. What were their challenges. That’s a big part of the fascination. We’re focusing on who they really were and where they came from and on the excellence of their work. How they impacted their generation of the time. We don’t run away from the challenges they faced, we want to bring them into the storyline so that people can understand, but we want it to be an inspirational viewing experience. We’re looking for goosebumps, tears, laughter. We want the audience to have an emotional connection with the film. There’s nothing better for myself or my team than being in the theatre and hearing the audience laugh at the same time or catch their breath. Q - You have filmed in some great locations, like Las Vegas, Texas, New York, and found some great sets. Which was your favourite?
A - We have some fabulous, creative and productive talent in Vancouver - and my background is lighting and photography, so I look for people that could translate what I like. There is a certain signature to our films. The big thing is we’re looking to create intimacy. We want there to be a sense that you are in the room with that person and they are telling that story to you and to make it a very visceral experience. People are very visual, and living in a visual world, we want high production values. That’s something that’s always been a signature in my world. This is a fantastic opportunity to bring talent to the table - and that means using the light to shape and bring out the personalities and bring out the individual. Q - Did you purposefully pick people to honour posthumously?
Photo of Steve McQueen, courtesy of Chad McQueen and The Terry McQueen Testamentary Trust
A - That has been the path that we’ve followed. We have a brand - we have a style. It’s certainly our focus. Part of our mission was to create films that would become the definite legacy piece on that icon, so you pretty much have to have the story not changing. We definitely will do series on people who are still [living], but in a different way.
“We’re looking for goosebumps, tears, laughter. We want the audience to have an emotional connection with the film.” A - A huge part of the cinematic look is where we film. It’s not rocket science but we wanted to find great locations. Like with Evel Knievel, we went into motorcycle repair shops. We looked for locations that speak to the subject matter. The gritty club and pool hall in Texas with Matthew McConaughey. It’s all about trying to layer the cinematic approach and give it some texture. It’s an element that gives the films something extra. For the Chris Farley film, I interviewed a handful of the folks - but my favourite was with Lorne Michaels in his office on Saturday Night Live on an actual Saturday night two hours before rehearsal. In a way I felt like I had entered the iconic shrine of comedy. Q - You use some beautiful camera angles in the interviews with the family members and friends. Tell us about the thinking that went into those scenes.
Q - You’ve avoided the use of a narrator in these bio-pics and have instead allowed the friends and family to tell the story. It makes the films very different and very intimate. How hard was that to script or storyboard? A - The way we do it is we create a roadmap and we engage a writer, assemble a reading list, books, articles and other materials. What we are looking for is a document that takes the essence of the individual. We then derive our cast list and create draft questions for that interview. So we go into that interview very focused and researched. The real key to getting really excellent results in an interview is to listen. At the end of the day, you end up with anywhere from 50 to 75 hours of interviews to create this 90 minute film. Then the magic happens in the edit suite. We have a good idea of where we want to go but there is a serendipitous element that we are open to - often more things can develop in the edit suite where you frame and reframe. Continued on page 12

Q - What was your favourite film so far? A - You know it’s interesting, and it’s a hard question to answer. You have such an intimate relationship with the families. We work really closely with them. You are closely connected to the story and you’re emotional about it. Pieces that didn’t make the final cut that you’re still wounded about. I love them all. I’m still very immersed in the Chris Farley film because it was a massive ratings success for SpikeTV. Then went onto iTunes and continues to be a leader. It’s very exciting. We got great reviews. Very fresh. Q - What was it like collecting all that archived footage from the past? A - It’s a process of discovery and extremely rewarding. It is very much like detective work because we’re looking for a number of things. Our team has access to their personal archives. Then you want to go look for content and footage from behind the scenes. You have to build relationships with a huge network of people. On Evel, there was fabulous footage of the Snake River Canyon jump, so we licensed that content, but in his personal world we found some home movies of the preparation and testing, so it made it more personal, more visceral. That’s a really important part of it. Q - What was one of the most emotional scenes you had to film in the series? A - There’s a lot of those moments, to be honest. With a lot of these films at screenings I have trouble staying in the theatre for the last ten minutes, because that’s often when we learn about the end of their lives. With Chris Farley, I had Q&A sessions with
audiences afterwards, but I had to walk out of the theatres to get into the head space to talk about it. It’s emotional, you get so close to the story, it’s not really a movie anymore. I see it on the audiences faces. A moment that really made me go ‘wow’ was in Facing Ali. I was in New York, right before the film had just started to go into the festival circuit, and the fellas from SpikeTV told me to go to Times Square. So I went at midnight and there was a 40 ft. billboard of the film, just dominating times square. So I was just standing there, just me, looking at it - nobody’s taking notice of me and I’m just frozen. That was certainly something within the revolution of our success that I’ll never forget. I’ve been in a number of occasions where family members are telling the story and they need to pause or stop. It’s emotional. There are tears. And quite frankly we are also in the emotion of that moment and we all stop. Yes these were icons. But these people were also somebody’s father, brother, friend. That’s all part of our films.
Growing up in Vancouver, Canada, Derik’s Canadian roots inspired a line-up of award winning programming both as a director and producer, including the ten part series Legends of Hockey, and several CBC Life and Times biographies on Wayne Gretzky, Mario Lemieux and Anne Murray. Derik is the creator and executive producer of the ground-breaking reality sports series entitled Making the Cut and is the producer and director of Stanley’s Game Seven 3D, a theatrical 3D film on the Hockey Hall of Fame. Publishing projects included large format pictorial biographies on Muhammad Ali, Arnold Palmer and Joe Montana. Derik’s work has been recognized by the Academy Awards, Washington D.C. Silver Docs, the Los Angeles Film Festival, Seattle International Film Festival, Hawaii International Film Festival, Houston International Film Festival, the International Film and Television Festival of New York, Vancouver International Film Festival, Banff Television Festival and The Gemini’s.
Q - Who are you going to feature next in the series - or what is your next project? A - Our team at Network is working on several projects in production and multiple productions in development, including a feature documentary on John Kennedy Jr., and a two part special on the mythical iconic figure The Cowboy. We have recently secured the rights for Peter Sellers and Dennis Hopper and will be announcing several new projects in the weeks ahead. - Catherine Barr cbarr@westvancouver.com

Upon first meeting Jason, we were impressed by his affable nature, his attentiveness to our concerns, preferences and expectations, and his polite, professional manner. This initial impression, and the trust we subsequently placed in him, was quickly validated when we sold our home over ask within three days of listing. Jason’s easy-going style belies a steadfast determination to over-deliver. He understood the significance of selling a much-loved family home. He guided our decisions without being pushy. He was constantly in touch. We never once waited on a return phone-call, and his support team was equally responsive. What you get with Jason is a personable, knowledgeable, tactically skilled REALTOR®. It was a pleasure to work with him and we would do so again without a moment’s hesitation. – Barbara and Ted Arnold
