Page Six An Apple A Day In this job, we have the pleasure of working with many different charity groups. The one thing they all have in common is the great people behind the scenes and how hard they all work to raise money for their cause.

And why does a bag of grapefruits cost more than a pack of cigarettes?

Just last month we met yet another amazing group. And this time the focus was people in need - food, clothing, shelter.

In a fight for human rights, health care and affordable living, I think food has been put on the back burner.

As we were touring the facility it hit me. Imagine not being able to

It’s not like I haven’t put it together before, but something this time really gave me pause.

I’d even go so far as to say that the basics - milk, eggs, vegetables and protein, should be provided free to families in need. Schools should maybe start considering a breakfast AND lunch program.

It’s something that most of us take for granted. But given the high cost of living these days, food is the one thing that seems to be going up the most. Meat, fish, milk, eggs and designer vegetables - nothing is really

affordable anymore. Try to shop organic and the price goes up even more. Why, I thought to myself, is something as basic as food, not being given a higher priority in our lives. Sure we all go on and on about nutrition and staying healthy, but why not do more. Why do we not demand more from our government and our health care system when it comes to the simplest of things - like food? Why do we complain about the high price of gas, but say nothing about the exorbitant cost of red peppers (one of my pet peeves)?

Something is out of whack.

Maybe we need to rethink our approach to it all. Maybe if we think of food the way we think of medicine, we’d be able to make it part of our health care programs. And as governments debate over whether to raise our taxes on this or that, I’d happily give more to ensure that every family gets fed.

Because students and teachers all deserve to have an apple on their desk - every day.

When it comes to real estate TV, only three things matter Drew, Jonathan and JD They’re the handsome twins-plus-one-brother team behind the successful series of home improvement and real estate based shows on HGTV and W Network. Vancouver born, they’re also head of Property Brothers Entertainment group - and it doesn’t stop there.

Interview with Drew Scott: Q - You and Jonathan are identical twins, but someone must be a few minutes older? Who is it? A - Jonathan is four minutes older and he rubs it in my face every day. I was actually a surprise. My mom thought there was only one baby. Our heartbeats were in sync. The doctor was ready to leave – then I came along. Q - You have an older brother JD? Any other siblings?

Armed with the tools it takes to make it in both real estate and show business, the Scott brothers have grown their empire to include six television shows, a full featured production company and various digital ventures.

A - Just us three. JD is the big brother who works with our company. He’s doing more and more hosting so you’ll see more of him as well. And he’s a writer who writes some of our digital content. It’s nice that the three brothers can work together so well. Q - Are you Canadian? Born in Vancouver?

And now, with big brother J.D. as part of the mix, what started out as a dynamic duo has morphed into a talented trio who’s equity just keeps going up.

A - All three of us were born in Vancouver. All three of us live in Las Vegas now. We still invest in Vancouver though, and we also have some property in North Vancouver. I find I like the properties in North Vancouver and West Vancouver and can get a good return on them for investment. Q - What do your family and friends think of all this success?

And if that isn’t enough to impress you, then just ask them about their various real estate investments and design ideas – not to mention their work with charities and more. It’s all part and parcel of their secrets of success and their family plans to take it all the way to the top.

A - The funny thing is a lot of friends knew it was going to happen. We’ve always had this crazy crazy drive. We would find ways as kids to do things. For example, in high school, I ran a kids sports camp and got the [then] Vancouver Grizzlies to sponsor it and give us a box for underprivileged kids. Things were meant to happen.

NorthVancouver.com | WestVancouver.com Q - You were both actors at one time. What made you transition to the business/real estate world and what made you come back to television? A - As kids, we were actors. Jonathan’s an illusionist too. Coming out of high school we didn’t want to be starving artists. We heard the real estate market was a great way to make money and a great way to support our artistic endeavours. Out of high school we bought our first property and got into real estate investments. We continue to invest even now. Jonathan went back to school for construction and design. Then we started in Calgary and came back to Vancouver, then expanded to Vegas. We found that when we returned to TV and film we were being approached for hosting gigs. Our two passions are now combined. We also do a lot through our digital content too. I would love to do more acting but right now I still get to direct and do our producing. Q - How is the real estate market different in Canada vs the U.S.? A - It really depends. Las Vegas was one of the hardest hit, but they were further ahead in the recession than Canada. No matter where you are you can see a lot more strength and steady growth in the market. Many say Vancouver is known for being overpriced, but there is still a lot of opportunity. You can make a lot of money if you’re smart, it’s just a matter of knowing where to invest it. Whether it’s an up market or down market, you just have to work with the professionals and invest wisely in it. I know where to look. No one wants to buy a home that has safety issues. You have to know what’s worth the money you’re about to put in. You have to know where to spend the money. This definitely comes from experience. Most neighbourhoods have a cap on what you can spend. Q - What do you think of the high price of real estate in Vancouver currently and what advice do you have for people trying to get into this market specifically? A - (from Drew) Vancouver has always had large appeal for investors. There are multiple industries, it’s culturally diverse and has some of the most beautiful neighborhoods in the country. Even though the prices are higher in Vancouver than most cities across North America, we have continued to invest there since the late 90’s. (from Jonathan) The way we see it, you can make money in any market if you’re smart. We know how to stretch a budget and put the money where it counts so buyers are lining up

with offers. When your home is in an expensive area you can’t afford to overspend and you DEFINITELY can’t afford to inflate the list price to try and make extra money. By pricing your property over market value all you are doing is helping sell OTHER properties. Q - What are home buyers looking for these days? A - One of the biggest things is people are wanting outdoor living spaces – an extension of their indoor space. It’s literally like a living room but outside. Furniture that is more all weather. Area rugs, TVs outside, built-in outdoor kitchens. More game rooms and entertainment spaces for the whole family. Home theatres are also big. Nowadays there are more ways to use our spaces. Q - Who has the harder job? The real estate agent (you) or the contractor (Jonathan)? A - Honestly, Jonathan always bugs me that he does all the work. But the way we blend our time, it balances it out. Physically he has the harder job. The longer hours mentally belong to the real estate side. On set you see more Jonathan, but you don’t see all the real estate paperwork and stuff behind the scenes. Q - What do you do for fun away from the cameras? Hobbies? Music? A - We listen to a whole lot of music. Mika is Jonathan’s favourite. Michael Buble is what I listen to when I relax. I also like U2. I really listen to everything but am not really a fan of heavy metal or hardcore rap. We also love to travel. That’s where we get our design ideas. We are both big health nuts and play everything from basketball to volleyball. We also like golf and rock climbing. We’re very into health and fitness. Q - What kind of charity work are you involved in?

A - All three of us brothers are global ambassadors with World Vision. They help so many children worldwide. When we were in Delhi, we saw heartbreaking conditions. Some parents in these slums – and the slumlords – make the kids beg and work. They don’t get an education. World Vision comes in and helps educate the family on better practices and opens education centres with food and clothing - and from there that gets them into the mainstream school system. Kevin Falcon

Bill Good is a Canadian television /media personality who worked for 21 years with the CBC, first doing radio before moving to TV news. He hosted talk radio at CKNW for 26 years. He also anchored evening news broadcasts on BCTV and CIVT between 1993 and 2010. He has recently returned to the airwaves with his commentary on News1130.

Kevin Falcon is a Canadian financial executive and a former provincial politician. He was an MLA for the BC Liberals from 2001 to 2013. He served as both the Deputy Premier and the province’s Minister of Finance. He was born in North Vancouver and currently resides there with his wife and daughters.

As a former provincial Minister of Finance, I view the upcoming Federal election through a different lens than many.

I grew up in West Vancouver, and my folks always emphasized what a privilege it is to be able to vote, and that we have a responsibility to vote.

I’ve seen firsthand the results of governments that have ignored the importance of living within their means.

I’ve made a career covering and commenting on politics and feel my civic duty comes before my sense of neutrality, or at least as a commentator, an attempt at balance.

The landscape is littered with governments who are either paying the price (Greece) or are about to (Ontario, France, Italy, etc.) for believing that they could spend recklessly without consequence.

This year, with weeks to go in what appears to be the closest to a three way race we’ve ever seen, I wouldn’t think about making a prediction especially after what we’ve seen transpire in BC, Ontario, and Alberta recently.

Canada enjoys one of the lowest levels of debt, in relation to the size of its economy, among the developed countries. This is why Canada enjoys a AAA credit rating. This result is not happenstance, but rather the culmination of fiscal discipline and policies that encourage economic growth.

I believe the very act of voting is an important way to be engaged in your community and country.

I won’t insult anyone by suggesting how they should vote. But I will suggest they carefully examine the promises being made and the skill set of those that wish to be Prime Minister.

The most critical issue facing Canadian voters in this election is the economy. But some will try and tell you that this election should be about change – a change of course from the economic record of the past decade. Change for the sake of change? The BC NDP attempted to make this argument in the 2013 provincial campaign but they couldn’t define why change must be made and didn’t provide voters with a concrete plan showing how BC would pay for eliminating resource development while increasing other areas of spending. Voters said no to the risk and chose to stay on course. After more than a decade of low interest rates, booms in both resources and real estate and strong fiscal management by both our provincial and federal governments; it might be suggested that opposition leaders and some pundits are counting on the fact that voters’ memories have faded. The memories of a country who once suffocated under high taxes, jobs loss, investment opportunities to other jurisdictions, rolling deficits and poor leadership - leadership who made decisions for BC from the lens of Ottawa or Quebec. Taxes don’t grow revenue, encourage investment or create jobs. It’s stunning to see two parties sell deficit spending and debt as election goodies in their campaign platforms. They’re selling deficits and deficit spending with all of the enthusiasm of a salesman on Black Friday – ‘No interest until October 2019!’ But that’s where both the opposition leaders are wrong. The taxpayers will pay and we will pay more to finance that debt as the value of our dollar decreases under the burden of debt and investor confidence drops. Instability in global markets is the new normal, not the exception, so it’s time we all accepted this reality and were prepared. Increasing taxes and tossing out trade agreements only discourages investments in technology and resource development which is the kiss of death for BC. These sectors are the backbone of our economy. Let’s remember the role of good government isn’t to be job creators or sole source investors; but rather create and enable conditions where trade, manufacturing, development and investment can flourish; and job creation and prosperity can grow.

Wade Davis Wade Davis is an ethnographer, writer, explorer, photographer and filmmaker who holds degrees in anthropology and biology and received his Ph.D. in ethnobotany, all from Harvard University. He is also an Explorer in Residence at the National Geographic Society and the author of 15 books, including the international best seller, Serpent and the Rainbow. He lives on Bowen Island. I think it’s very simple. The country is at a major crossroads and this is one of the most important elections of my lifetime. If you think about it, my Canada was the Canada that emerged from the 20th century, and all the terrible wars, with its reputation having been honed in battle and celebrated in peace. What made Canada great in the post WWII era was the legacy of not just how our fathers had fought, but how peace was created. We were known as a nation of peacekeepers who could take on a position of which we had fought, but also out of that came this incredible image of our country. People saw us as a land of peace. I think that the last administration has made a decision to go to battle, hand in hand with America, and not for any particularly good reason. I think it’s compromised our international reputation. Just like our position on the environment, which was once exemplary, - instead now, because of our position on climate change, we’ve been sidelined and rendered mute in one of the most important environmental decisions of our era. So when I say it’s the most important election, I’m not trying to call into question any one candidate, but I would say that I definitely think we are in need of a change of leadership. I want the country to once again be the country of my father. A multi-cultural, pluralistic country that stands up for peace in the world with an independent policy while being a sanctuary for those in need.

Heroes come in many shapes and forms, but none more true than Jim Almas. A man of honour and dignity, Jim officially retired this summer from the West Vancouver Police Department after 35 years of dedicated service to a community that he loves - and one that loves him back. Never thinking on it as “work�, Jim also volunteered countless hours to help out at local events and functions. Dignitaries, friends and co-workers came out to celebrate with him and his family at an elegant retirement night which included great food and fun speeches, photos, toasts and tributes. On the job or not, you can still see him around the hood as he continues to keep busy in his roles as a father, husband and best friend to the community.
