Page Six Dear Graduates Dear Graduates: Every year at this time, I feel a little envious. But this year, not so much. This year is different. Why? Because you’ve been cheated. The current pandemic, which is well into its second year, has robbed us all - but you, maybe more so than the rest. What you’ve lost is time. And you can never get that back. A harsh lesson learned at an early age. I am deeply sorry and so very sad for your loss. And for that reason, I think you deserve special recognition - and an extra special wish. The last two years of high school changed my life. There were memorable school trips, wonderful teachers, and music - lots and lots of music. I learned some big life lessons during this time. The most important lesson: always dream big. It won’t happen unless you make it happen. The last two years of university were important too. I couldn’t wait to get out. It was surviving the system, going through the motions, being broke. It wasn’t the greatest time, but there was no denying that it again shaped my life significantly. What I can say, without a doubt, is that my life would have turned out completely different if I had been isolated at home or stuck in a dorm room during these so-called ‘last two years’. And now your life is going to be different too. That’s not necessarily a bad thing, but it is important to recognize - because you’ll never find what you’re looking for if you don’t know what’s missing. I also know that you’ll be one of the strongest generations for having gone through this. You’ve reached this major milestone during extremely troublesome times and under a great deal of stress and anxiety. The good part - there’s still a whole universe of excitement that lies ahead. If you languished in your room, blowing off classes and doing the bare minimum - you’ll have to catch up. You didn’t get off as easy as you thought, and the hard parts are coming, especially if you want to be successful. You missed out on a great deal of your in-person education, and that’s nothing to celebrate. My wish for you here is to know that lifelong learning is something worth doing every day. Love your brain. Please don’t abuse it. It’s one of your most precious assets. If you breezed through your online classes and actually found it easier not being in school - please also be cautious. Those school trips you missed, those ‘lost on campus’ moments, that demanding teacher who just hates you, the coach that always yells at you - these parts are missing from your life story. Go out and get them. Put yourself out there. Start a band or choir. Plan a trip with friends to learn a new language. Sneak into a university class and sit in the back row. Everyone needs to build this extracurricular character - and you also need something to tell your grandchildren.

06 - NorthVancouver.com | WestVancouver.com

However, if you were one of those who struggled with the isolation, please know you’re not alone. Times are very tough. Don’t ever give up. Hold your friends and family close, especially the ones that mean the most. There’s only ever a handful of these in life. And as you grow older, the ones that count will always have your back. If you feel you missed out on some fun, you probabaly did. But trust me when I say there’s way better stuff coming - that’s a promise. So don’t worry about the caps and gowns, the ceremony, and even the parties you fear you missed. Those only last a day or two. Plan your own party - one that will last a lifetime. Add tons of sparkle, and don’t let anything, or anyone, stand in your way. Build the life you want - and live the life you deserve. One of my favourite songs from the 80s had these words of advice. It’s called ‘In the Living Years’, written by B.A. Robertson and Mike Rutherford. It speaks of regret and loss and has never been more relevant. “Every generation blames the one before. And all of their frustrations come beating on your door. So don’t yield to the fortunes you sometimes see as fate. It may have a new perspective on a different day. And if you don’t give up, and don’t give in, You may just be okay.” Two years is a lot. But when it comes to time, it is all relevant. I’d give anything to have two minutes to say goodbye and hug my uncle, who recently passed away. Covid robbed me of that. I’d also give anything to have the paramedics arrive two seconds earlier to save my other uncle, who collapsed suddenly. Thanks to the pandemic, I can’t fly over to be at his funeral and be with family. Two weeks. Two uncles. Too much. So I dedicate this column to the Class of 2021 - and to the memory of two men who taught me how to think, plan, learn, survive, laugh and smile. Because life is about seeking out the experience, the memories we make, and the journey we take. Congratulations graduates. You’ve made us all proud. You know, more than ever now, that you don’t get a ribbon just for showing up - and you don’t get things handed to you easily. Your path is already one of the roads less travelled. Make it a good one full of adventures. Look for the good battles, not the hard fight. As Maya Angelou said: “When you know better, do better.” Life is a gift. Go make it a good one. Rose Gold Even travel restrictions can’t keep a good wine down - or in this case, a good Prosecco. Join Carmen D’Onofrio, of Stile Brands, as he introduces us to owner Sandro Bottega and a sparkling line of summer bubbles that are bound to lift your spirits.

Owner Sandro Bottega takes invited guests on a virtual private tour of the winery and virtual wine tasting of the Bottega Gold and Rose Gold.

Tell us about Stile Brands and also about Sandro Bottega and his passion for Prosecco.

Tell us, how often have you been over to Italy? What’s your favourite region? And what do you drink at home – what’s your favourite wine? I would go to Italy about three times a year and visit our suppliers. And regions that I love in Italy - depends on the season. But if we took the seasons out of it, I love the region of Le Marche. It’s a region that people don’t really know much about. It’s this pristine, untouched region that’s really quiet and tranquil, and people live amazingly well. And the coast is beautiful. The beaches are beautiful. You know the seafood is amazing, absolutely amazing. The best part about this job, this business and this industry are the people - the relationships that you form, the people that you meet. It’s special, and you know, you cherish it because I don’t think a lot of industries are like this. As for wine, if I have a choice of a bottle, I love Barolo. I just love the complexity of Barolo. I think it comes at you in waves. There are so many different layers to the wine.

What are we doing with Prosecco these days? Is it a trend? Are we going to see more of it during the summer months? What’re your predictions? I think you’re going to be seeing a lot of Prosecco Rose over the summer months. This is something that has been studied and has been in the works for about five years. The Italian government and the consortium have agreed on the regulations and how it’s supposed to be produced and packaged and now you’re going to see more and more of it. It checks all the boxes off, and it tastes great. It’s wonderful.

Stile Brands is a family-owned agency. We started in 1991, and from there, we just continued to grow. We started off with wines, obviously Italian wines, and my dad was always always looking for products that over delivered for the price. We were the first importers of Prosecco back in 1992 when nobody knew what it was. And now with Bottega - these are Sandro’s babies. He’s got such a creative mind - and he never sleeps. So he created this bottle that is triple baked to create this gold packaging. It’s not spray painted. It’s actually fire-baked, and the colour stays on the bottle. Prosecco is all about fun and elegance and he wanted to have a bottle that commemorates that. He even wrote a cookbook on Prosecco - and it’s got oveer 100 recipes about cooking with Prosecco.

The Canadian Screen Awards An exclusive podcast interview with CEO Beth Jansen

Catherine: Welcome everyone to the WestVancouver.com podcast. We are back, and we are going glam today with a salute to the Canadian way. We have somebody very sparkly and very spectacular with us. Please welcome the CEO of the Academy of Canadian Cinema and Television, Beth Jansen. Welcome, Beth. Beth Jansen: Thank you for having me. Catherine: Well, it is a delight to have you here because our association with the Academy goes back a long, long way. We are massive fans of television, cinema, and film. Everybody loves the glamour and seeing our favourite actors. So, Beth, lead us off. Tell us a little bit about yourself and how you got involved with the Academy. Beth Jansen: I believe it’s relevant, so I will start by telling you that I did a year of university at UBC in the mid-’90s. I’ve always had family living in Vancouver, so I feel like I’m an honorary West Coaster. I grew up in Montreal, spent 20 years in New York, working in theatre, then in television, and helping launch the Tribeca Film Institute. I got married, had three kids, and decided that I would like my kids to have some Canadian culture, so we moved back in 2016. The opportunity at the Academy was really interesting for me because I felt like there was so much talent in Canada that was on par with the talent that I was seeing in the US. I felt like there was an opportunity to have a real impact, develop that Canadian talent, and give that talent the recognition it deserved. I wanted to try and shift the narrative a little bit around Canadian content because I certainly was aware of the branding issue that Canadian content has - and the more that I educated myself and saw the work, the more I realized that it wasn’t true. I wanted to try and shift that narrative. It was a big, big challenge. Catherine: You mentioned the whole idea of Canadian identity. This is the whole point behind the Academy - to promote diversity and all

the things that we do. We have a Canadian label, and it’s an excellent label to have these days. Do you find that we’re moving up in terms of Canadian talent being recognized worldwide? Beth Jansen: Yes, I think absolutely. It’s wonderful that we have other countries responding to our content. It just proves that audiences love it. That is a wonderful thing to know and to wave that flag. But I think that we struggle a little bit with all the comparisons to the US and to Europe. We compare, and we don’t look at our history. The Film Board of Canada was making newsreels, sort of patriotic, some might even say, slightly propaganda-like films during the war. We really did develop this cultural institution that led the way for our work and the commercial work. We didn’t really have a system to support that. I think we still really don’t. So, the commercial work we do here, which is world-class, is often not written here and not developed here. It is produced by companies outside of Canada, but I don’t think that’s a bad thing. I just think that we should just recognize that. I think we are starting to develop our scripted content, which you can see in television. I think that our films this year at the Canadian Screen Awards were some of the most audience-friendly work I’ve seen since I’ve been here. I think there’s a lot of change happening. It’s an exciting time to be at the Academy. Catherine: The awards used to be divided into the Gemini Awards, which were television, and the Genie Awards, which recognized film. In 2013, the Gemini awards and the Genie awards merged. Tell us a little bit of the reasons behind that merger. Beth Jansen: Well, I honestly think it was driven a little bit for financial reasons. This was about four years before my time. From what I understand, the Academy was overextended. We had regional offices in Vancouver, LA, and Halifax, as well as Montreal and Toronto. It was bleeding money and not able to sustain itself. I think doing two award shows was also a huge enterprise. They were thinking about (contined on next page)

The 2020/21 Radius Award (presented by MADE | NOUS) was presented to Schitt’s Creek star Dan Levy

Author, poet, activist, and feminist - writer Margaret Atwood’s career spans six decades. She’s also a past Spotlight award winner.

Drew and Jonathan Scott are always transforming homes and lives. This year, their ‘Forever Home’ show was the most nominated lifestyle program/series.

A proud Canadian, and a Lifetime Achievement award recipient, Christopher Plummer, will forever be remembered for his talent and his amazing legacy.

Canada’s Drag Race led the nominations in 2021 as the most nominated reality/competition program or series.

Perennial favourite Catherine O’Hara has taken home many Best Actress awards during the six seasons of ‘Schitt’s Creek’.

Past host Howie Mandel is always a hit from start to finish. No doubt we will see him return again soon.

Since 1984 Canada’s Alex Trebek has stunned and stumped as host of ‘Jeopardy’ - he was honoured in 2020/21 with the Academy’s Icon Award.

Academy CEO Beth Janson helped head up the new ‘virtual’ platform performances in 2020 and also put together the plan for this year’s 2021 show.

Dr. David Suzuki is a scientist, tv star, author, and co-founder of the David Suzuki Foundation. He received the Lifetime Achievement award for the 2020/21 year.

streamlining everything. That’s how the Canadian Screen Awards were born. I think that we shouldn’t be classifying content based on cinema, film or television. We need to have a more sophisticated way of classifying content because it’s all over the place now. Catherine: Yes, all things are streaming. During this pandemic, we all watched bigscreen movies on what is technically our small screens at home, but the digital world has definitely forced that hand. You’ve handed out a selection of awards this year. And we can’t go without mentioning Schitt’s Creek starring Catherine O’Hara, Eugene Levy and the latest rising star, Eugene’s son, Dan Levy.

controversial back in the summer when things looked like they were settling down, but I’m glad we did it in the end. Last year was total chaos because we basically had this plan for a broadcast show and these huge events and had to cancel those only two weeks out. I would love to never do another virtual award show ever in my life (laughs). There have been positives about it - people who were hesitant about adopting technology had to adapt to continue working, so that has been amazing. But, yes, I think we’re definitely going to take some of what we learned by doing things virtually and integrate that into a new kind of show moving forward.

Beth Jansen: Yes, the idea that a Canadian show would sweep the Emmys - historically, nobody has ever done that before, and in its sixth season. That is unheard of. We are proud that we have been awarding it for all six seasons. Catherine O’Hara has won Best Actress every single year. That, for me, was a validation that our content can travel. I don’t know if you or your listeners are aware of all the stuff that’s going on regarding revising the Broadcasting Act, but originally content was programmed in the national interest. It really was for Canadians to teach Canadians about Canada. I think we need legislation that really changes that and catches up to the reality that voices travel across borders. When you just think of the impact that Schitt’s Creek had with just the positivity of it. It’s a very special series. Catherine: Now, this last year threw a wrench into everything with the pandemic. You had to literally switch into reverse as quickly as possible. And now 2021 has come along, and we’re still recovering from the limits the pandemic has put on us. Everything’s being done virtually. Tell us how you tackled that whole situation. Beth Jansen: It was a challenge. It was easier this year because we did have time. We made the decision really early on that we were going virtual and to not attempt any in-person programming. Now, this was

and streaming, we were used to having ‘The Nature Of Things’ as part of our weekly appetites. I think that David has been a leader in doing that globally. The show has been airing for about 40+ years. It’s had a huge impact on Canadians and on spreading the Canadian ethos around the world. It’s a hit here, but it’s also been a hit in 20 other countries around the world. I think both David Suzuki and Alex Trebek have this discipline - the discipline that comes from committing yourself to one show for your entire life. Alex Trebek received our Icon Award. He was someone that tried to challenge people, to bring out the best in them, and I think that was a wonderful way for us to recognize the impact that he had around the world. He lived in the US and was based in the US, but he was a member of the Academy for 30 years. He would call us every year to renew his membership and send us a cheque in the mail. He was committed to keeping the industry and Canada strong. Catherine: It’s an entirely unfair question but do you think we’ll be back on that red carpet again next year? And also, what do you see as being in the future for the Academy and the awards program?

Schitt’s Creek star and Canadian Screen award winner Eugene Levy

Catherine: Two other award winners come to mind. We mention them again this year because we didn’t get to fully celebrate them last year. The first is David Suzuki. He’s been an activist and environmentalist - and to have him included in the Screen Awards is amazing. Then there’s another big name which everybody knows, Alex Trebek, who sadly passed away from pancreatic cancer last year, but another ‘iconic’ award winner. Beth, can you talk about these special category awards for us? Beth Jansen: I think that the Lifetime Achievement Award for David Suzuki is . . ., well frankly, I was really surprised that he hadn’t already received one. I can’t think of another journalist who’s had a bigger impact on Canadians. Before the internet

12 - NorthVancouver.com | WestVancouver.com

Beth Jansen: That’s our goal. We have some exciting ideas for how to create a hybrid show. We’re also going to try and play with the format. But again, I think we have an advantage in that our show has a lot of substance. It’s about discovery and not just fancy people, although that is a lot of fun as well. So, I think what we’re interested in is being leaders in the industry and in the country. Catherine: Beth, thank you so much for joining us today. What does the future hold? It is yet to be told - and it will be told by the storytellers and the writers, directors, musicians and actors that we get to call Canadian. To our listeners, look us up at WestVancouver Magazine podcast, on Apple and Spotify - or go to WestVancouver.com and as we say, just press play. Until next time, I hope you will stay in touch and save me a smile. - Catherine Barr

Arts Umbrella’s New Home Vancouver’s Arts Umbrella has been providing access to the arts for hundreds of kids and teens for years – but now, with a new building and a new year underway, there has never been a better time to dream big. Such was the case for the organization’s CEO, Paul Larocque, who recently gave us a private tour of the new facility and all its magic.

Arts Umbrella CEO Paul Larocque gives a personal tour of the new facility on Granville Island

Paul, tell us a little about yourself and how you got involved with Arts Umbrella in the beginning. I started at Arts Umbrella back in the mid1990s - and I’ve been with Arts Umbrella, off and on now, for more than 15 of those 25 years. I returned to Arts Umbrella to take on this leadership role in the spring of 2016 - and one of the big tasks that was given to me by the Board was to really ensure that Arts Umbrella had the expansion that it has long needed.

“If I was to say something - the building really was built to reflect the standard of the programs that are being led at Arts Umbrella.”

Tell us how Arts Umbrella was founded and tell us what purpose it plays in development for children. Who is it for? Arts Umbrella was founded here 42 years ago - and the organization has grown so much since it began. It was brought about by a group of women artists who had this vision for providing arts education to young people in the community, across all disciplines, and to ensure that the arts could be accessible. Anyone who has financial need can come in and very easily applies for bursaries. And we have a huge bursary program. Close to 600 students receive bursaries and scholarships every year. But the great majority of our programs we deliver in communities across Metro Vancouver, where there is demonstrated need and vulnerability for young people.

Arts Umbrella moved into a brand new home, which was the former Emily Carr University of Art and Design. Tell us about this massive project? So we specifically were looking at what is referred to as the south building of Emily Carr University. We were so fortunate to work with an amazing team of consultants and a whole stream of engineering consultants and theatre design consultants – an amazing group coming together. We have repurposed this building through a $27 million expansion project – and it now has six large dance studios, music and film studios, art and design studios, including a media hub and analogue photography darkroom. There’s a 132 seat professional performance theatre that was once the lecture hall, a professional exhibition gallery and a scene and design shop. It’s state of the art. And it’s entirely dedicated to young people to explore their creativity through the arts. The city stepped up in big ways. But individuals and corporations from not only Vancouver but across the country saw the value in this project. And in the end, we have raised more than $37 million to realize this project.

Social Seen COURAGE TO COME BACK AWARDS 2021 In a year like no other, it’s fitting that 2021’s Courage To Come Back recipients were celebrated in an all-new format with a 30 minute TV show that aired on Global BC, BC1 and streamed on CityNews1130.com. The recipients show immense courage in the face of adversity, just like the 5000+ people living with mental illness in BC that rely on the generosity of donors to access the support they need. *Safe social distancing, face masks and other Covid-19 health and safety rules were followed at all times during this event. Some photos have been ‘framed’ or altered to show people in closer proximity for publication purposes only.

Guy Felicella – Addiction Category Against the odds, Guy Felicella has overcome a 30-year cycle of addiction, homelessness, crime and jail, living within a two-block radius in the Downtown Eastside. He has been sober for 8 years, and is a public speaker and tireless advocate for people living with addiction.

Lorne Segal, O.B.C, Chair of The Courage To Come Back Awards and President of Kingswood Properties comments: “I am thrilled to have shared these five stories of courage and resilience in an all-new format this year. Thank you”

Miranda Tymoschuk – Youth Category Despite painful surgeries to lengthen and straighten her leg, living with complex illnesses, mental health challenges and addiction, 25 year-old Miranda Tymoschuk chooses to turn these into an opportunity to help. From a young age she has volunteered, fundraised, shared her story and trained to help and counsel others so they might feel less alone.

Lester Wong – Physical Rehabilitation Category When a horrific car accident burnt 30 per cent of his body, Lester Wong was left disfigured and underwent countless surgeries. Undeterred, he returned to school, resumed his military reserve role and gained his commercial pilot license, despite his loss of fingers. He selflessly volunteers for burn charities, and shares his story to help others.

Hosted by Olympian, former Vancouver Canucks goaltender and Mental Health advocate Corey Hirsch, this year’s show celebrated the inspiring journeys of five award recipients, while also raising critical funds for people living with mental illness.

Greg Anctil – Medical Category In spite of 20+ years of ill health including Crohn’s Disease, cancer, and four limb replacements, Greg’s story is one of upbeat positivity. He has returned to practice law four times, all while volunteering his time for others. He is a dedicated husband and father.

FACTS

What’s next for the North Shore?

You’ve heard it all before. “We’re all in this together.” “The best vaccine is the one in front of you.” “There’s light at the end of the tunnel.” Excuse me for another cliché, but “the future is now” for North and West Vancouver. As Canada’s laggard vaccine rollout ramps up (or as I like to call it - “Operation Slowpoke”), the next chapter for the North Shore is being written. What will it look like? - By Bob Mackin | bob@thebreaker.news

01

HERD IMMUNITY - FOR THE COMMUNITY

04

WILDLIFE IN THE NEIGHBOURHOOD

The ticket out of the pandemic has been as close as your neighbourhood pharmacy or a temporary clinic, such as the old ICBC claims centre in North Vancouver. BC. Ministry of Health officials say there will be enough vaccine to give everyone a first jab by Canada Day and a second jab by September. But don’t put away your mask quite yet. The three North Shore municipalities have a combined population of more than 190,000. If 70% is herd immunity, then the estimated population over 14 needed to be jabbed twice is 114,000.

02 SUM-SUM-SUMMERTIME Prime Minister Justin Trudeau pledged that a “one-dose summer” will lead to a two-dose fall - and a return to normal. But this summer looks a lot like the last. No ‘Celebration of Light’ fireworks to pack the shores of Ambleside and Dundarave. No trips across the inlet to the Pride Parade or Pacific National Exhibition Fair in 2021. Dr Bonnie Henry has legalized small backyard barbecues with friends and family. And Grouse Mountain and Capilano Suspension Bridge, which boasted over a million visits a year pre-pandemic, could welcome back licence plates from Washington - if Trudeau reopens the border for leisure visits.

Raccoons and cougars and coyotes and bears - oh my! Less traffic on the streets and more people hiking the trails meant a spike in wildlife sightings. Some critters found their way into garbage cans and compost piles. North Vancouver District Council enacted a new bylaw banning roadside garbage cans before 5:30 a.m. on takeaway days. As of March, more than 200 of the $100 first offence tickets were issued. Fewer than 10 of the $500 tickets were for repeat offenders. Dr. Bonnie Henry and Provincial Health Minister Adrian Dix Photo Credit: Government of BC / Flicker

03 BACK TO THE OFFICE Weekday mornings have been a breeze across the Lions Gate Bridge. That may not be the case come fall when the University of BC resumes in-person classes, and some downtown employers call their workers back into the office, at least part-time. Data collected at the south end of the Lions Gate Bridge for April 2020 showed traffic dropped by an average of 30,000-vehicles per day — which is half of 2019’s normal total of 60,000. Over at the Ironworkers Memorial Second Narrows Bridge, the average fell by 51,000 to 71,000-vehicles per day. But it’s almost back to normal now as March 2021’s average was just over 114,000-per day.

05 WITHER THE MALLS? Services like Amazon, SPUD and Skip the Dishes were among the winners of the pandemic home delivery sweepstakes. Not good news for bricks and mortar retailers already facing high rents and high taxes. Rental towers are nearing completion on the site of the old Park Royal White Spot. Capilano Mall’s owner QuadReal (the real estate arm of BC’s public sector pension fund BCI), began exploring its options before the pandemic. QuadReal is a partner with developer Westbank in the two-decade-plus plan to transform Oakridge Centre from an upscale mall into a forest of condo towers.
