WELCOME

to Turner Sims, Southampton If the onset of dark nights is not the most appealing prospect as (at time of writing) the weather takes off for summer then I hope that the raft of artists we have been able to bring together for the new season will offer some treats to look forward to at the end of the year. Browse through the pages of this new-look season guide and you will find concerts featuring music from seven centuries: from a medieval focus courtesy of Joglaresa’s seasonal programme to new work from artists as diverse as trumpeter Abram Wilson, folk legend Chris Wood, and the Britten Sinfonia. The piano series celebrates Chopin’s anniversary in 2010 and also sees a return for Paul Lewis, patron of our appeal in 2008 which successfully fundraised for a wonderful new Steinway. The jazz series has a piano focus too with Tord Gustavsen and Roberto Fonseca amongst a strong line-up which includes artists from America and Africa as well as the UK with a first visit from vocalist Clare Teal. Our ever-popular teatime special series welcomes Chloë Hanslip, Emma Johnson and Pascal Rogé whilst the chamber music series includes a rare chance to hear all five quartets by Philip Glass performed by one of the great advocates of the works, The Smith Quartet. Finally the spoken word is evident in many of the events this season. Alfred Brendel asks whether absolute music can be funny, story teller Sally Pomme Clayton brings tales from the North-western fringes of Europe, adventurer Ben Fogle talks about his world travels and Roger McGough reads the poems he wrote to accompany a performance of Saint-Saën’s Carnival of the Animals. Enjoy the musical menagerie on offer this autumn with us. We look forward to welcoming you to Turner Sims soon.

ORCHESTRAS LIVE From Purcell to John Adams via Mozart, Tippett and Varèse, this year’s orchestral series offers music from five centuries. The London Sinfonietta bring some of the repertoire they are presenting at Southbank Centre’s Varèse retrospective, in a programme that includes other contemporary masterpieces that put the composer's work in context. Britten Sinfonia perform music from both sides of the Atlantic, including the exhilarating settings of poems by Arthur Rimbaud which make up Britten’s song cycle Les Illuminations. Last, but by no means least, the London Mozart Players celebrate the 60th birthday of Howard Shelley with a programme which gives an opportunity to see this renowned artist in the role of both conductor and soloist.

ANGELA HEWITT Friday 30 October – 8pm

Angela Hewitt has become one of the piano’s cult figures. Despite her 11-year-long Bach recording project and her Bach World Tour in the 2007/8 season, her repertoire ranges from Couperin to Messiaen. Gramophone Artist of the Year in 2006, she is also a keen chamber musician, and runs her own festival in Umbria, which she founded in 2003. On her first visit to Turner Sims she presents a beautiful all-Schumann recital including the composer’s representation of the Davidsbünd, Schumann's imaginary and spiritual brotherhood of artists who combat the shallow nature of the contemporary culture, and his depiction of Forest Scenes. Turner Sims gratefully acknowledges the support of Jaques Samuel Pianos, London, for supplying the Fazioli piano for this concert.

ALFRED BRENDEL: LECTURE

DOES ALL CLASSICAL MUSIC HAVE TO BE ENTIRELY SERIOUS? Thursday 7 January – 8pm Alfred Brendel retired from the concert platform in 2008. Now he returns as a speaker, discussing the ideas and inspiration that, for nearly fifty years, have made him one of the world’s leading pianists. There will be a chance to savour the old Brendel magic when he illustrates his thoughts at the piano. Alfred Brendel writes: Can absolute music, without the assistance of words, movement, or the stage be funny? Some philosophers and even musicians have denied this. In this lecture I try to demonstrate that humour, wit and irony are indeed crucial elements of certain works of great music, particularly by Haydn and Beethoven, and that proof can be found in the compositions themselves.
