Kevin Appleby Concert Hall Manager Although we are building up to Turner Sims’ 40th anniversary in 2014-15 (look out for first details in June), notable landmarks and special occasions still come thick and fast through the Spring season. For one of our Associate Artists, the season marks the end of a two-year journey. The Elias Quartet’s Beethoven cycle has enraptured audiences, offering new insights into these core repertoire works. They finish their cycle in May with the final work the composer wrote. Another quartet cycle, albeit concentrated into two concerts on a single day, comes from the Smith Quartet, who mark Michael Nyman’s 70th birthday with performances of his complete string quartets. The Schubert Ensemble are likewise closely linked with new music and their programme to close the season celebrates John Woolrich in his 60th birthday year. I’m delighted that John will be with us on the occasion. We celebrate the voice in many forms, with visits from Ian Bostridge, June Tabor, Ed Motta, Sanna Kurki-Suonio, Tom Baxter, Emilia Martensson and Naturally 7. And among the ‘instrumental’ voice rarities are masters of the Armenian duduk, Persian spiked fiddle and Northumbrian pipes. Our jazz strand includes a special duo performance by legends Marc Copland and John Abercrombie, plus new material from the Tord Gustavsen Ensemble, Colin Towns’ Blue Touch Paper, and Andrew McCormack & Jason Yarde. I’m delighted that the latest project with Southampton Youth Jazz Orchestra brings MOBO Award winners Kairos 4tet to Turner Sims to present big band interpretations of this wonderful group’s music. Leaf through this Spring brochure and you will find everything from solo performers, through to ensembles and orchestras via duos, a trio, quartets, a quintet, sextet, and septet, performing some of the greatest music ever written. Whatever scale of performance you experience on your visit to Turner Sims, I hope that the surroundings and the interpretations make it truly special.

Michael Collins, City of London Sinfonia

PIANO SERIES & ORCHESTRAS LIVE Inspiration from an array of sources infuses the Piano Series and Orchestras Live series this Spring. The waltz was the starting point for Ravel in his Valse nobles et sentimentales which features in Simon Trp eski’s programme. Dance forms of a different kind were the inspiration for Schumann’s Papillons which opens Piotr Anderszewski’s recital. On a larger scale is Beethoven’s Pastoral Symphony, the composer’s glorious homage to the countryside, which forms part of the City of London Sinfonia’s visit. And finally, human relations are a focus for the other two piano recitals in the series. Imogen Cooper’s programme explores the loving influence that Robert and Clara Schumann each had on the other whilst Peter Donohoe’s recital ends with the last of Prokofiev’s ‘War’ sonatas, dedicated to and inspired by his future wife.

Kathryn Tickell and The Side

GLOBAL VOYAGES Evocative sounds, from lone instrumentalists to a whole ensemble, define Spring’s Global Voyages series. Three instrumental masters – SANS member Tigran Aleksanyan, Kathryn Tickell, and Kayhan Kalhor – showcase the Armenian duduk, Northumbrian pipes, and kamancheh or Persian spiked fiddle respectively. Fiddles of a different type – performing Hungarian czardas and laments, and English folk – define the sounds of Tcha Limberger, who visits with his Budapest Gypsy Orchestra, and Dave Swarbrick who performs an up-close and personal gig. Vocal variety comes from singer June Tabor, who appears as one third of supergroup Quercus, and Ed Motta, one of Brazil’s star performers, who brings his infectious sounds to us as his country prepares to host the Football World Cup. Country matters from a previous generation are the impetus for the stories behind Dammed Nations, a meeting of Welsh and Egyptian musicians, and also the focus for Will Millard in his explorations through the world’s jungles. Last but not least is the largest gathering of all: the uncategorisable Penguin Café are a British institution guaranteed to offer a world of musical sounds in a single evening.

Naturally 7

JAZZ @ TURNERSIMS Partnerships, enduring, new and specially created are a feature of the Jazz series. Jazz legends Marc Copland and John Abercrombie combine for a special evening of intimate piano and guitar. The guitar is a feature of clarinettist Evan Christopher’s Django a la Creole too as he celebrates the gypsy swing of Django Reinhardt. Miles Davis is profiled by trumpeter Jay Phelps and his all-star band, whilst a contemporary celebration comes from Southampton Youth Jazz Orchestra whose collaboration with Kairos 4tet will bring a big band dimension to the MOBO Award winning group’s music. Courtney Pine opens the series with his latest project House of Legends, and fellow British saxophonist Jason Yarde makes a welcome return with pianist Andrew McCormack to showcase music from their new album featuring the Elysian Quartet. Tord Gustavsen and Colin Towns’ Blue Touch Paper bring European perspectives on jazz as they celebrate their respective new releases. And amidst all the instruments are Naturally 7, seven voices creating an extraordinary sound that has enticed everyone from Michael Bublé to Coldplay to work with them. All in all, a season to shout about.

PIOTR ANDERSZEWSKI Audiences first took Piotr Anderszewski to their hearts in 1990 during the Leeds International Piano Competition. His penetrating interpretations, infused with personal insights and nuance, balance Anderszewski’s famous perfectionism with an intense spirituality that transcends matters of keyboard technique. Small wonder that his recitals around the globe attract capacity audiences and regularly rejuvenate the spirits of even the most world-weary listeners. Tonight’s programme includes Schumann’s suite of dance pieces written when the composer was just 20 and the first of the three sonatas Schubert wrote in 1828 during the last months of his life, when he knew he was dying.

FRETWORK WITH IAN BOSTRIDGE

Ian Bostridge is one of the finest song interpreters of his generation, an artist with a longstanding international career as a soloist, as an opera star and now as a writer (his A Singers Notebook was voted one of The Independent’s Books of the Year). Lutenist and composer John Dowland epitomises the spirit of melancholy, so fashionable in the Elizabethan period. In addition to the famous lute songs, Dowland’s Lachrimae was a set of seven pavanes for five viols and lute, each derived from the lute song Flow my tears. It became one of the best known collections of consort music in its day. In this programme, the sublime voice of Ian Bostridge combines with the renowned viol consort Fretwork and lutenist Elizabeth Kenny to create an evening of exquisite poetry and elevated expression.

SYJO AND KAIROS 4TET This year’s annual collaboration between SYJO and a major British jazz name brings one of the country’s most exciting groups to Turner Sims. Fronted by saxophonist and composer Adam Waldmann, Kairos 4tet are fast becoming a cornerstone of the British jazz scene. They are one of a kind – bridging the gap between classic and contemporary; ferocious grooves, burning improvisations and melodies that linger long after the music stops. Winning the prestigious MOBO award for Jazz in 2011, they have recently released their latest album to great critical acclaim. Tonight they are also joined by one of the vocalists from the album to present unique re-workings of some of their music.

IMOGEN COOPER

Imogen Cooper writes: My selection of works in the first half of this programme stems from the closeness between Robert and Clara Schumann née Wieck, and the loving influence that each had on the other. That each wrote a beautiful Romanze (no doubt with the other in mind) was irresistible. But so was finding the source of Robert’s material in the first movement of his great F sharp minor Sonata, and this was none other than Clara’s imaginative Le Ballet des Revenants (The Ballet of the Ghosts), a ‘scene fantastique’ or fantastical scene from her early Quatre Pieces Caracteristiques. Note the element of the supernatural in the title – this, together with the idea of disguise, dreams, duality, madness, was Robert’s inner world, so richly portrayed in his greatest works. Brahms’ own arrangement of his Op 18 String Sextet variations, made especially for Clara who loved the piece, is but a further link tying these three great 19th century musicians together and the fact that Schumann admired the deceased Schubert so much, at a time when Schubert’s star was not high, is in itself another loving tie between one great musician and another.

Political decisions and divisions from the 1960s continue to shape the current world and in Dammed Nations, voices from two seemingly unconnected communities unite on stage recalling the fates of the village of Capel Celyn in North Wales – lost to the waters of the Tryweryn Reservoir – and the traditional Nubian homelands in Aswan, Egypt – drowned with the construction of President Nasser’s High Dam.

TCHA LIMBERGER’S BUDAPEST GYPSY ORCHESTRA Tcha Limberger has become recognised as one of the most prominent and important figures in the folk music of the Carpathian Basin of East-Central Europe. An astonishingly accomplished multiinstrumentalist, Limberger comes from a famous family of Gypsy musicians and grew up with the Gypsy-jazz style of Django Reinhardt. Touring with this small orchestra of hand-picked Budapest Gypsy musicians, Tcha’s performance bursts with soaring musical tragedy, delivered with passion and technical virtuosity.

One of the most astonishing musicians I have heard in ages. Singing while playing the guitar is one thing, and Tcha Limberger does it exquisitely, but singing while improvising a countermelody on the violin is something else again. He is blind, speaks five (or was it six?) languages and seems to be made entirely out of music. I doubt if a more absorbing performance took place that night anywhere in London or, indeed, anywhere at all. T he Observer

PETER DONOHOE Russian music is as the heart of distinguished pianist Peter Donohoe’s welcome return to Turner Sims. Prokofiev’s sonata is the last of his three so-called ’War’ sonatas, all premiered in the 1940s. Whilst it has allusions to the horror of war its moments of lyricism reflect the inspiration for the work and its dedicatee, Prokofiev’s future wife Mira. Inspiration of a different kind infuses the other works in the programme. Scriabin gave his seventh sonata the nickname White Mass, depicting bells, clouds, perfume and a ‘fountain of fire’. His second sonata, which opens the programme, takes its inspiration from nature, whilst Liszt’s work, from which we hear the first six movements, depicts in music the composer’s travels across Europe.

SANS is the new folk-world quartet featuring multi-instrumentalist Andrew Cronshaw, the great Finnish singer Sanna Kurki-Suonio, multiinstrumental reeds player Ian Blake, and Tigran Aleksanyan – Armenian master of his country’s heart-rendingly voice-like reed pipe, the duduk. An instrumental combination not found in any other band in the world, it draws deeply on different but remarkably compatible traditions: the ancient Karelian songs that became Finland’s Kalevala, the sweeping melodies of Armenia, and English folksong. They combine to make a genuinely new music of extraordinary beauty and fluidity in which each performance is a new creation.

Evan Christopher is arguably the world’s finest clarinettist and possibly the greatest of all time! He combines virtuosity and immaculate taste with a strong root in New Orleans jazz. A virtuoso of the Persian spiked fiddle called the kamancheh, Kayhan Kalhor is a three-time Grammy nominee widely considered to be the greatest living ambassador of Iranian music. Born into an Iranian Kurdish family, he has performed internationally as a founding member of cellist Yo-Yo Ma’s Silk Road Ensemble and given solo recitals at Carnegie Hall. Living back in Tehran after years in the West, Kalhor returns bearing the shah kaman, a new, custom-built kamancheh constructed with sympathetic strings, joining forces with Ali Bahrami Fard, a master of the rarely heard bass santour (a hammered dulcimer with 96 strings). They perform the deeply stirring music from 2012’s World Village release I Will Not Stand Alone, a stark and haunting meditation that finds glimmers of hope in dark times.

SCHUBERT ENSEMBLE

The last concert of the season concludes with Schubert’s masterpiece which takes its name from the set of variations on the composer’s song of the same name. Schumann’s work comes from his so-called Year of Chamber Music, 1842, during which he produced three string quartets, a piano trio, the innovative piano quintet and the piano quartet. The Piano Quartet was the last of the series, written within a few weeks. The programme includes two works by John Woolrich in his 60th birthday year including Sestina, commissioned by the Schubert Ensemble from the composer.
