WELCOME
to Turner Sims, Southampton I’ve been musing on how many ways there are to find out information about this season’s events. Not so long ago, the printed brochure was our only method of communication. Now we have a plethora of e-tools at our disposal. With Twitter and Facebook accounts and the launch of our new website (www.turnersims.co.uk), you can not only discover what is coming up but let us know what you think of it too. The Turner Sims YouTube channel lets you see many of the artists and groups in action. And with blogs, text messages and mobile phone apps still to come, it seems that communication is at the heart of all we do. And yet the essence of what Turner Sims does still comes from the live performances we present, both in the venue and elsewhere. The Spring season is no exception, with artists from far flung corners of the globe passing through Southampton to present their musical perspectives on the world. Since Paul Lewis’ last Schubert retrospective ten years ago his profile has risen hugely. As a result, the series which launches here in February will also go to venues in Europe, America and Australia. Meanwhile, this season’s jazz artists are heading into the UK from Europe, America and Australia, with New York bass player Ben Allison giving an exclusive appearance. Folk music includes two bands which have been notable by their absence from the UK scene in recent years, Battlefield Band and Danú. By contrast, singer Mark Padmore and the Britten Sinfonia have been regular visitors over the past three years. This season sees the completion of their Britten song cycle series and also the launch of the Maggini Quartet’s new series focussing on Britten’s teacher, Friends Frank Bridge.

The programme also features the Sonata in D D850, also composed in 1825, and the Drei Klavierstücke D946, written just six months before Schubert’s life was tragically cut short.

Composer, teacher, conductor and professional musician, Frank Bridge was one of the most significant figures in British music in the first half of the twentieth century. His compositions include many orchestral and vocal works and a large amount of chamber music. To mark the 70th anniversary of his death Turner Sims presents a three-concert series focussing on Bridge’s four string quartets. Spanning the whole of his compositional life, they mark the very pinnacle of his achievement, and are played by the Maggini Quartet, themselves renowned for their interpretations of British repertoire. The works will be presented alongside music by the composer’s peers and his sole pupil, Benjamin Britten. The opening concert places the lyrical second quartet, written against the backdrop of the First World War, alongside the third, the language of which reflects Bridge’s affinity with Bartók and Berg but also Beethoven. One of the latter’s Op 18 works opens the concert. Turner Sims is grateful to the Radcliffe Trust for their support of this concert.

NICOLA BENEDETTI Thursday 9 June – 8pm Nicola Benedetti violin Alexei Grynuk piano
One of the UK’s most innovative and creative young violinists, Nicola Benedetti has captivated audiences and critics alike with her remarkable musicality and poise, winning a Classical BRIT Award for Young British Classical Performer in 2008 and an exclusive Universal/Deutsche Grammophon recording contract. Her recital this evening includes the Beethoven sonata dedicated to a virtuoso who declared it ‘unplayable’, and Strauss’ work, composed under the romantic spell of Pauline de Ahna, who later became his wife.

DANU Tuesday 14 June – 8pm Danú are back in the UK at last. Since their last tour here 5 years ago, they have been as active as ever, developing new material and touring in Ireland, Europe and America. Now they return to the UK with a new album – Seanchas – and a short run of dates that has been much-awaited. Their repertoire remains a carefully selected mix of traditional and new material, with their trademark complexity of sound, as they explore the endless possibilities within Irish music. Bursting with energy, subtlety and irresistible rhythm, their reputation as one of today’s leading bands anywhere in Irish music worldwide has been hard-earned and well-deserved.
