Hot club of cowtown
Saturday 19 March 8pm
Thursday 14 April 8pm
Sunday 17 April 7.30pm
The term ‘double bass’ takes on new meaning as two of the greatest living practitioners of the instrument - jazz master Christian McBride and classical/ folk/bluegrass Renaissance man Edgar Meyer - join forces for a thrilling exploration of the deep space beyond genre and expectation. This setting provides a chance to hear each of them with a level of intimacy and detail that is rare in larger settings. Playing a stylistically diverse programme including new original music for the two of them, they will explore previously unimagined possibilities for the double bass.
The exuberant Hot Club of Cowtown make a very welcome return to Turner Sims with their infectious blend of hot jazz and Western swing. Hot Club weave a combination of seemingly disparate styles together to magical effect - a joyful blend of danceable, swinging vivaciousness, full of raw joy and authentic energy.
Master jazz pianist Julian Joseph returns to Turner Sims alongside the fantastic Southampton Youth Jazz Orchestra, directed by Dan Mar-Molinero, to play through Count Basie’s seminal album The Atomic Mr Basie. Expect stunning renditions of these incredible jazz classics such as Splanky, Lil’ Darlin and Flight of the Foo Birds all delivered with the greatest respect to the jazz icon.

It takes considerable bravery to name your band after one of the greatest jazz ensembles of the last century. Hot Club get away with it because they have spirit, originality and skill that would surely have impressed Stephane Grappelli and Django Reinhardt back in 1930s. The Guardian
