Kevin Appleby Concert Hall Manager A year of notable firsts begins this Autumn at Turner Sims. Across this season and into 2012 you will find performance premieres, appearances by musical pioneers, and debuts from many artists new to Turner Sims, both established names and rising stars. Ironically the most notable first of the Autumn is also a last: the British premiere of a work which Benjamin Britten wrote in 1927 at the age of 14 features in the final concert of our Bridge Quartets series with the Maggini Quartet. Another UK premiere comes from pianist Mikhail Rudy who brings his extraordinary marriage of Kandinsky watercolours and Mussorgsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition to us following its first performance in Paris last year. For musical pioneers, look no further than saxophonist Steve Coleman, and influential African kora maestro Toumani Diabaté. Kathryn Tickell, foremost exponent of the Northumbrian pipes, and violinist Viktoria Mullova explore their roots in new projects, whilst John Garden offers a new soundtrack for the classic silent film The Lost World. A particularly special first appearance is that of distinguished pianist Pierre-Laurent Aimard, whose recital in January is one of the highlights in a strong piano series. And the orchestral series includes a first for me, and I suspect most others, with horror writer Peter Straub joining the Aurora Orchestra for a night of spine-tingling music and words. Finally we will be launching some new ways to engage with, experience and understand the music and artists we present. Keep up to date via our website, www.turnersims.co.uk, plus our various other social media platforms.

This year’s Piano Series has an international dimension and sees four artists visiting for the first time. Pierre-Laurent Aimard includes Debussy in his programme, whilst Gabriela Montero includes South American repertoire along with an opportunity to experience her unique improvisations. Conrad Tao also features his own compositions, with his own Three Songs in a mixed programme culminating in the fireworks of Stravinsky’s Petrushka. Paul Lewis’ Schubert series continues with three recitals, two solo and one with Mark Padmore performing Winterreise. Peter Donohoe makes a welcome return with Liszt, in the composer’s anniversary year. Mikhail Rudy’s debut programme also includes a Liszt element, along with the first UK performance of his extraordinary audiovisual project. First seen at the Cité de la Musique in Paris last year Rudy performs Mussorgsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition alongside projected images of watercolours by Kandinsky.

ORCHESTRAS LIVE Encounters both welcome and unexpected are a feature of the year’s orchestral series. Vivaldi specialists La Serenissima under director, violinist Adrian Chandler bring a programme of the composer’s music –including the concerto recently discovered by a Southampton academic. Following their performance of Walton’s Façade in 2010, Aurora Orchestra return with another programme of words and music, this time of a more chilling variety with horror writer Peter Straub. Journalist Melanie Reid’s recuperation from a serious riding accident has spawned a fascinating column in The Times and is the inspiration for Sally Beamish’s new work, which the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment bring to us in February as part of the celebrations for London 2012. And 2012 also sees a welcome return for the London Sinfonietta as part of a new relationship with Turner Sims, more details of which will be announced in the new year.

Paul Lewis SCHUBERT AND THE PIANO 1822-1828 Paul Lewis continues his survey of Schubert’s piano music with the composer’s late set of Impromptus and the irresistible Moments musicaux. The recital culminates in one of composer’s best known and most virtuosic works. STILE ANTICO THE IMMORTAL GLORY OF SPAIN
Saturday 8 October – 8pm Stile Antico are one of the country’s leading vocal ensembles. This evening they offer a fascinating portrait of Tomás Luis de Victoria, the pre-eminent composer of the Spanish Renaissance, devised to mark the anniversary of his death in 1611. Victoria’s dazzling technique and imagination are nowhere clearer than in his ‘parody’ masses based on the music of other composers; movements from four of his most celebrated settings are heard side-by-side with their parent works – motets by Morales, Guerrero and Palestrina and an energetic chanson by Janequin.

BRIDGE QUARTETS CYCLE 3
Thursday 24 November – 8pm Bridge’s sole pupil is at the heart of this last concert in the quartets cycle. Britten’s Three Poems, receiving their British premiere this evening, and Three Divertimenti were written just as he started and finished lessons with Bridge. Bridge’s first quartet is firmly in the late-Romantic tradition of his teacher Stanford and was one of the works which established his reputation. Vaughan Williams’ setting of Housman’s evocative poems, written in the same decade as Bridge’s work, sees two rising stars join the Magginis.

BRITTEN SINFONIA ENSEMBLE Music for the combination of oboe, bassoon and piano is unusual but by no means unique. Perhaps the best known work is Poulenc’s Trio, a light and witty piece which imitates the French Baroque style with an emphasis on clarity, balance and simplicity. André Previn’s Trio juxtaposes this and is full of energy and jazz rhythms. Young composer, Elspeth Brooke adds to the repertoire for this mix of instruments with a new work commissioned by Britten Sinfonia and Wigmore Hall.

Its 14 members are drawn from some of the most exciting and in-demand young musicians active in the UK today, taking the classic big band sound and add slamming bass and drums, skronking guitar, wah-wah funk and retro 70s fusion. Influenced by Loose Tubes, Polar Bear and Radiohead amongst others, their music redefines the role of the big band instrumentation for a new generation.

Tuesday 31 January - 7.30pm Director Phil Grabsky’s film In Search of Mozart broke box office records in the United States in 2006 and became one of the highest grossing documentaries in Australia and New Zealand. Its follow up, In Search of Beethoven, was hailed by The Observer’s film critic as one of the finest movies about a great musician I’ve ever seen. Now the award-winning documentary filmmaker presents In Search of Haydn, following its world premiere at London’s Barbican, shedding light on the most elusive of the three Viennese composers. Joseph Haydn was one of the greatest musical innovators, yet today he is often overshadowed in favour of his younger contemporaries. By speaking to the greatest living exponents of Haydn’s music, this film explores the life of this forgotten master and his work. Beginning with a live performance of one of Haydn’s works, the evening will finish with a question and answer session with Phil Grabsky.
