WELCOME
to Turner Sims, Southampton With the London 2012 Games now less than 1000 days away and the Cultural Olympiad for the Games cranking up, Turner Sims is playing its part in showcasing the UK’s cultural achievements. If you were at our Big Day Out in July you will have experienced a whole day of free events as part of the London 2012 Open Weekend, and in September we hosted a visit by London 2012 Chief Executive Paul Deighton during which he saw Southampton Youth Jazz Orchestra in performance with saxophonist Soweto Kinch. In programming terms, one of the Olympiad’s core values – welcoming the world – continues to be a regular focus for us. Regardless of which genre you explore, Spring offers performers from across the globe. Our piano series alone brings artists from Russia, France and America with two of them ‘winners’ (albeit not in the Olympic sense) at the 2009 Gramophone Awards, acknowledged as the classical music Oscars. In our orchestral programme I’m particularly pleased that we can welcome the London Sinfonietta for their first visit in many years, performing a programme specially created for us and centred around the work of the great American composer Varèse. Celebrated music from an earlier time comes from Elizabeth Kenny’s revisiting of John Blow’s Venus and Adonis. Sophie Daneman appears in the female title role, backed by an all-star instrumental cast. The folk series celebrates the guitar wizardry of Martin Simpson in a rare outing of his Band, and the infectious Celtic spirit of Lúnasa. Our jazz programme has a distinctly Scandinavian flavour with Nils Petter Molvaer and Dan Berglund among the European offering, whilst Gwilym Simcock and the Neil Cowley Trio contribute to a British strand, both presenting new projects. Plus journey to Spain, Cuba and the desert with our newly branded world music series!

Warsaw Village Band use instruments rarely heard in modern music: frame drums, the hurdygurdy and the suka, a Polish folk fiddle, plus a powerful vocal style called biały glos (white voice), a technique once used by shepherds in the Polish mountains to carry their voices over long distances. The resulting sound mixes Polish folk dances with Indian ragas, the blues, disco, and then some. With spine-tingling harmonies, constantly shifting rhythms and a raft of influences ranging from dance songs to pareddown acoustic funk, this is a great chance to see the group The Guardiandescribed as one of Europe's most intriguing, adventurous bands.

The opera covers an extraordinary emotional range and at the time was seen as a companion-piece to Purcell’s Dido and Aeneas. When first performed it was royal through and through – the motherdaughter partnership of Venus and Cupid was a celebrity as well as musical attraction: royal mistress and virtuoso Mary Davis joined her (and Charles’) daughter Lady Mary Tudor on the stage. Tonight this all-star vocal and instrumental cast recreate the story, following a selection of pieces by Purcell, Michel Lambert and Blow.

NEIL COWLEY TRIO Saturday 8 May – 8pm Once dubbed ‘Jazz for Radiohead fans’, the Neil Cowley Trio have turned the concept of the piano trio on its head. They make a welcome return to Turner Sims with Radio Silence, their much anticipated follow-up to 2008’s Loud Louder Stop, a confident statement stamped with their trademark inventiveness, wit and brash dynamism. Their intensely melodic, catchy and soulful jazz, coupled with Cowley’s cheeky banter and remarkable rapport with his audience, make for an unforgettable evening in the company of one of the most important and distinct acts on the UK jazz scene.
