FALL

Welcome to Art Under the Stars, the 37th Maitland Rotary Art Festival. The Festival is a charitable corporation formed by the Rotary Club of Maitland to provide cultural enrichment to the community and funds for local charities. Over the years the festival has produced net proceeds in excess of $500,000, all of which have been donated to charitable organizations. Rotary is a worldwide organization of business and professional leaders that provides humanitarian service, encourages high ethical standards in all vocations and helps build goodwill and peace in the world. 1.3 million Rotarians belong to more than 32,000 clubs in 170 countries. The Rotary Club of Maitland was formed in 1960. Stop by the Rotary tent to learn more about our club and how to get involved. You can also bid on a framed high quality print of the poster art, or buy a raffle ticket for a chance to win one of two brunches for 8 at Bonefish Grill. The Performing Arts of Maitland (PAM) and Art and History Museums-Maitland (A&H) are contributing to this Festival. PAM is providing continuous live musical entertainment and a special performance of the Stage Band Friday evening. A&H is providing judging and awards for Student Art and special activities for participating artists, as well opening the doors of the museums and grounds to the public during expanded hours during the Festival. Take a few moments to enjoy the student art display inside the Civic Center. This feature recognizes and encourages outstanding creativity of the young people in our region’s public and private schools. Buy something from an artist. The Festival is an art sale. The sale of art is the engine that makes this all possible. Have something to eat and drink. Enjoy yourself. It is all for many good causes! Very truly yours,

art and history museums - maitland The Maitland Art Center was founded as an art colony in 1937 by visionary American artist and architect, André Smith (1880-1959). This tradition continues at the Maitland Art Center today, with gallery exhibitions, art programming, and a strong curriculum of art instruction in an intimate atmosphere. Visit this historic, aesthetic gem set in the middle of busy Central Florida. The Art Center is one of the few surviving examples of “Mayan Revival” or fantasy architecture in the Southeast. poster artist biography Jim Holehouse The oldest of nine children, Jim Holehouse was born in the town of Coshocton, Ohio in 1950. Although interested in fine arts from a young age, he decided to pursue an education in engineering, and later attended the University of Cincinnati. During the grueling winters, Jim had a vision of sunshine, palm covered beaches, and tropical winds… the time had come to leave the Midwest behind tropical watercolor master at work. Jim relocated his life to south Florida, where he attended the Gold Coast sailing school, and then began teaching sailing. As a result, he wound up chartering many trips to the Caribbean and South America. It was during this time that he began an endless fascination with the tropical destinations, the sea, and surrounding architecture. He began working in the watercolor medium, attempting to capture the vivid color, emotion, and spontaneity of the tropics. And all who are familiar with Jim’s work will attest that he has indeed captured that feeling in nearly thirty years of original works. By 1976, Jim and his brothers John and Tom had founded Tropic Art Design in Orlando, FL, handling all publishing and distribution, framing, and shipping of Jim’s fine prints and originals to a worldwide audience. And since its inception, Tropic Art has grown to be a fixture in the central Florida art community, one of very few must-see galleries in the area. Jim’s work has been sold and collected for nearly thirty years, and the value of the paintings from this master watercolor artist has increased along with his growing popularity.

judges biographies Mamie Joe

A first generation American Chinese, Mamie Joe has always loved art. As a child working in her parents’ small grocery store in the Mississippi delta, she would sit for hours drawing and sketching. Encouraged by her grandfather, himself a professional artist, she never once veered from course, and by the time she finished high school she was already preparing herself for a life, and a future, in art. After attending Delta State University in Cleveland, Mississippi, she completed her B.A. studies at the University of Mississippi in 1970. Ms. Joe has exhibited widely, both in the art fair venue as well as the museum and gallery venue, in which she has participated in more than 300 one- and two-person shows since 1970, including, among others, the High Museum of Art in Atlanta and the Southeastern Center for Contemporary Art in North Carolina. Ms. Joe’s work, best described as 2-D Mixed Media, is a cacophony of bold, primary color and shape. Within larger geometric forms and spaces, smaller organically shaped elements co-exist, perfectly balanced and in perfect harmony with the total environment. Although earlier work was clearly abstract and nonrepresentational, the last few years have seen a gradual movement toward the inclusion of such unlikely elements as household furniture, for example. A recognizable but small section of sofa and a small end table adorned with a pot of flowers reside in front of a wall whose colorations could never exist in real life. Boldly colored curtains and stages appear in the background, as if the artist is staging her newly engaged elements under a spotlight as to ensure they don’t go unnoticed. Ms. Joe enjoys sewing and making jewelry in her spare time. She currently resides north of Atlanta.

Dale Rayburn

With his iconic renderings of everyday life, Dale Rayburn has elevated the art of printmaking to the highest level. Armed with an MFA from the University of Mississippi in 1970, Mr. Rayburn went on to teach at several colleges and universities in the southeast. By 1968, however, he had already done his first art festival. His signature portraits, at once supremely gentle and incredibly powerful, are noteworthy for their empathy and understanding that transcends his subject’s ability to get through life and to endure. At first glance, his portraits appear to be snapshots of life at its most mundane, but are in fact brilliantly executed renditions of the daily activities of life that are vitally important to our well-being and to our self-worth. Over and over again, they speak of Mr. Rayburn’s profound respect for the human element. As a founding member of the N.A.I.A. in 1995 (National Association of Independent Artists), and as board member in 1996, he helped steer its formation to become the pre-eminent voice of art fair artists everywhere. In 2009, he helped found the Renaissance Art Festival in Mississippi. Mr. Rayburn retired from the show circuit in 2011 after 43 years, and after taking countless awards and receiving countless accolades for his artwork and for his contributions to the art fair industry. His work resides in such collections as the HighMuseum in Atlanta, YaleUniversity, and the White House in Washington, D.C. He has never compromised his work and his artistic integrity for what he calls “the artistic whims of the moment.” To this day, he is in his studio by 8:00 every morning. Mr. Rayburn and his beloved rescue dog Doodle split their time between a home in north Georgia and a farm in Mississippi.

Jay Song

From a degree in Law to an M.F.A., contemporary jeweler and metalsmith Jay Song is truly a Renaissance woman. Born and raised in South Korea, she was named professor of Metals and Jewelry at the Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD) in 1999, and currently serves as Chair of Jewelry and Objects in the School of Design. Her work has been exhibited extensively at home and abroad, including multiple venues in the U.S. (Atlanta; Rochester, N.Y.; New York City; among others), as well as in China and South Korea. Ms. Song’s work has been featured in several periodicals, including Metalsmith magazine, as well as two textbooks (21st Century Jewelry: The Best of the 500 Series; and The Ring). In 2012, she was awarded the prestigious Art Educator of the Year Award by Niche magazine, after having been nominated no fewer than three times before. She has received SCAD’s Presidential Fellowship Award. This past April, her students were invited to show their work at the annual Smithsonian Craft Show in Washington D.C., and were the only such group in the country this year invited to do so. Utilizing primarily sterling silver, which she says symbolizes “purity and quietude,” Ms. Song meticulously constructs unique, oversized works that “draw in the wearer and viewer by generating tensions between visible surfaces and concealed interiors” (Metalsmith magazine). They are pieces of sculpture to be viewed and admired, as well as pieces of jewelry to be worn as adornments. As a communicative form, both ceremonial and decorative functions are intrinsic qualities inherent to each piece, and more recently she has begun incorporating various papers into the work. Whether her objects are lanterns that are meant to hang from hands that pray or meditate, or whether they hang from rings of the wearer, the common denominator is one of intense, multi-surfaced detail and sheer beauty. Ms. Song enjoys all genres of music, from country to classical, and practices yoga in her spare time. 37th Annual Maitland Rotary Art Festival
