When a Fashion Icon becomes a Style Icon There is fashion and then there is style. Did you know that they are not synonyms for each other? Being a fashion icon does not automatically elevate you to being a style icon. Fashion is the flavour of the season—a creation by a designer that is usually worn by a popular figure, who then is perceived as a fashion icon to follow. Just about anyone who flaunts what is understood as fashionable, can be called a fashion icon. A style icon on the other hand is not someone who is known only for the brand she wears, but the statement she makes each time she steps out. A style icon is born not from calling oneself so, rather by having the world decide that this is a person whose style is inimitable and is something that will last forever. While Sonam Kapoor or an Alia Bhatt is looked up to by the younger generations for what popular fashion is all about, Rekha and Sridevi will always be known for the style icons that they are—the majestic sarees they step out in, the chic hairdos, gowns and their levels of fitness as well. A style icon comes, not from following fashion trends of a season, but rather by unwittingly creating a trend and carrying it on through life. Take for example Princess Diana. Close to 20 years after her death, social media still continues to see high traction for videos on her fashion sense. In fact, comparisons are made to her daughter-inlaw Kate Middleton, often highlighting how the dressing sense may be similar between the two. Yet, it is Princess Diana who will always be looked on as a style icon. Becoming a style icon is no simple task. Years ago a style icon was made when someone created a look of their own, a trademark of sorts and carried it off with panache. Today, a style icon is more about creating a personalised look and adding a unique spin to what may be popular. So you will have Deepika Padukone, Katrina Kaif, Priyanka Chopra and Kareena Kapoor all who wear heavy Indian jewellery with their western outfits, yet, each one of them pull it off in their own unique way, making each of them a possible style icon. 1/3
