TUSKEGEE UNIVERSITY FY 14-15 ANNUAL REPORT

2014-2015 HIGHLIGHTS

Message from the 7th Tuskegee University President Brian L. Johnson, Ph.D.

• •

Tuskegee University is pleased to provide its 2014-2015 annual report, highlighting our many significant accomplishments and demonstrating that, 100 years since the passing of Booker T. Washington, Tuskegee University is poised to leverage its glorious tradition towards an equally glorious trajectory.

As this university faces the ever-changing academic landscape of the 21st century, our new administration is dedicated to the implementation of several initiatives aimed at ensuring we are a data-driven, outcomes-oriented organization. We are developing new enrollment management and budget development practices, decreasing expenditures, increasing major gifts from corporations and foundations, and raising our alumni giving percentages. To remain competitive and preserve our architectural legacy, we are continually improving our academic and physical infrastructure to enhance the living and learning experience for our students. Systematically and methodically, we are tackling long-term deferred maintenance costs and expanding our technological capabilities. Fiscal and human resource management has been strengthened with a number of modifications including lowering reliance upon short-term and long-term debt, insisting upon positive cash balances and cash reserves and knowledge-based decision-making. The 2014-2015 academic year was, by any measure, exceptional. Our curricula continue to prepare our graduates for excellence today and tomorrow. Throughout this report, you will find several highlights about our exemplary scholars and committed faculty members. Together, they are all contributing to new knowledge and scientific advances to the university and the world at large. They are just a small sample of the highly engaged members of the Tuskegee community and we are proud they have chosen to lend their talents and time to this institution. This report also highlights the strides the Tuskegee University community has made in not only honoring the great tradition of Booker T. Washington, but setting a stellar 21st century trajectory. Lastly, the university community is developing a 10-year strategic plan based upon the five (5) strategic priorities outlined within the Tuskegee University visioning document. This plan will be submitted to the university board of trustees in January 2016. Tuskegee University is committed to transparency, consistency, communication, and collaboration while maintaining the highest standards of integrity and higher education professionalism. In closing, Tuskegee University invites its global and national audiences, historic and long-time financial contributors, alumni, local community members, supporters, friends, parents and future students to do the following: #TrustTheTuskegeeTrajectory #TrustTheTuskegeeTradition

student spotlight Megan Williams, an English major, was a panelist at the 2014-2015 Albany State University Poetry Festival in Albany, Ga. Festival participants included Nikki Giovanni and other nationally known poets. She has also conducted research on African American poets, and plans to continue her research during her graduate studies. She is currently pursuing a master’s degree in American Studies at Purdue University. Arlander Taylor is a senior finance major in the College of Business and Information Science, with a 3.96 GPA. He is a student who triumphed despite adversity and is a role model for all of our students. A “child” of the Katrina tragedy, when he and his family left New Orleans and relocated to Birmingham, he managed to stay focused and is one of the best students CBIS has ever encountered. In 2014, he participated in the spring Study Abroad Program at the University of Sunderland in the United Kingdom and the summer Yale University School of Management Global Pre-MBA Program. Remembering his challenges, but not allowing them to cloud his focus, this young man has fed his desire to succeed with leadership experiences that include being president of the Business Law Club, chief of design for Tiger Press, treasurer for

the Student Government Association, vice president for ENACTUS, and participation in the student chapter of the National Association of Black Accountants. Additionally, he has served on the Finance Committee of the Tuskegee University Business and Engineering Conference (TUBE) and participated in the Suntrust Investment Banking Diversity Leadership Summit. He was also a first place winner of the Deloitte Consulting Case Competition. Ashley Ware, a senior chemical engineering major and a native of New Orleans, won first place in the Fuels, Petrochemicals, and Energy area in the 2014 Undergraduate Student Poster Competition organized by the American Institute of Chemical Engineers (AIChE). The event, which was held at the Hilton Atlanta on Nov. 17, featured more than 500 participants from across the country and was part of the Annual AIChE Student Conference. Akili Smith-Washington, a junior chemical engineering major fromHouston, won second place in the overall competition in the Food, Pharmaceutical, and Biotechnology are in the 2014 Undergraduate Student Poster Competition organized by the American Institute of Chemical Engineers (AIChE). a cash award. Dr. David Baah is Ware’s research mentor and Dr. Maria Calhoun is Smith-Washington’s research mentor at Tuskegee University. Jamilah Page is a graduating senior majoring in dietetics and has had stellar achievements throughout her time at Tuskegee. She has a 3.2 GPA, completed three summer internships, studied abroad in Costa Rica and served as co-editor for the Food & Nutritional Sciences Quarterly Gazette. Additionally, she was elected to state office as co-chair 2015/16 of the first student board committee of the Alabama Dietetic Association and will serve as chair in 2016. She is also a member of the Sigma Alpha Pi National Honor Society and held other leadership roles including Senior Class SGA E-Board secretary and Tuskegee University Food & Nutritional Sciences (TUFANS) club assistant secretary and treasurer. Airene Caver came to Tuskegee University in Fall 2014 as a Merit Scholar, majoring in Animal and Veterinary Sciences. As a new student, she already had over 30 credits in AP/ AB courses credited to her degree, which allowed the Eminent Scholar (4.0 GPA) to take advantage of the opportunity to spend a semester studying abroad in South Africa. Her experiences include leadership roles in organizations,

student spotlight such as Minorities in Agriculture, Natural Resources, and Related Sciences (MANRRS) where she just began her second term as treasurer. At the Alabama Wildlife Center, she spent time working to conserve a variety of species indigenous to Alabama. In South Africa, she analyzed biodiversity in relation to water quality within an artificial wetland and determined the impact of elephants on Commiphora trees in the Mapungubwe National. She is a member of the PreVet Med Scholars Honors Program and will be in the Class of 2020 at TUSVM as a part of the collaborative program that allows outstanding undergraduates to enter into veterinary school after only three years of undergraduate study. Christopher G. Silvers enrolled at Tuskegee University as an architecture major in the Fall of 2007. During his first year, he seemed to continue much of the academic success he achieved while attending high school in Kansas City, Mo. Later, Silvers experienced a number of personal challenges that not only affected his academic standing, but almost ended his life. In the spring of 2012, under the advisement of his spiritual and academic mentors, he decided to make important life changes with an emphasis on new career and academic goals. These changes included transferring to the Construction Science and Management Department, volunteering for community service opportunities, seeking summer

internships, and basically re-branding himself. His hard work dedication and perseverance paid off with a job offer in the fall semester of his senior year. He was also awarded the 2015 CSM Alumni and Faculty Advent Award honoring the most improved CSM student. Silvers currently serves as a Project Field Engineer with PCL Construction Company in Orlando, Fla. Veterinary student Shayla Johnson, is a member of the Tuskegee University School of Veterinary Medicine (TUSVM) Class of 2016. She also serves as one of TUSVM’s student leaders and is on the TUSVM Student Chapter of the American Veterinary Medical Association (SCAVMA) Executive Board and served as the chapter president for 2014-2015. In 2014, Johnson was also the recipient of the Dr. and Mrs. Aaron Groth Jr. Scholarship on behalf of the Alabama Veterinary Medical Association (ALVMA). She was given this award for her proven leadership in SCAVMA and her involvement with the ALVMA Executive Board.

A bright young man, Jason Ashley, arrived in the fall 2011 at Tuskegee University to pursue a professional degree and participate in the university’s athletics program having earned a scholarship to play football. Despite the rigorous demands of meeting the requirements of a professional degree, Ashley made a commitment to pursuing teacher education. Throughout his matriculation, he has realized his passion for sports and decided to pursue a parallel career in physical education. Currently, Ashley has met all of the academic and professional/state testing requirements to be eligible for participation in a teaching internship, spring 2016.
