This list might tell a lot about a person... although, mine could change daily

My 2010 Valentine’s Play list: Everlong, Foo ďŹ ghters Hey, Pixies

It might be a little trite to produce my February issue around love, but I’m not sure there

Sex on Fire, Kings of Leon

is a better month to do so. Colorado’s snowy and brown Februarys could use a little love and some heating up. This is perhaps my least favorite time of year in Colorado, so, I do everything I can to enjoy the opportunity to cozy up inside with my warm man. As well as enjoy the opportunity on Valentine’s day to dine at one of the amazing restaurants our growing city has to offer. This month you can ďŹ nd our top list of restaurants to enjoy a great evening out, starting on page 6. My husband and I created a list of our favorites and did a fun “He Saysâ€?, “She Saysâ€? on the issue. We agreed on 18 favorites, but had some difference of opinion on how we viewed the style of cuisine and the atmosphere. Our hope is that it may help you decide the perfect place to enjoy an evening out with your love. And, if you would rather cozy up at home, you can check out page 18 for a man’s perspective on great recipes to do just that.

Go, Common Did you ever look so nice, The Samples Closer, Slum Village Today, Joshua Radin Young Lust, Pink Floyd No Ordinary Love, Sade Into the Mystic, Van Morrison

I ďŹ nd that people either love or hate Valentine’s day. Most the people that are not fans, tend to think the day was created simply for retailers to proďŹ t from one’s feelings of obligation. If you fall into that category, check out pages 4 and 5 in this issue. I have featured a wide variety of Valentine’s day gifts that are not only unique, but also support small companies and entrepreneurial spirit.

Twice, Little Dragon Fade into you, Mazzy Star You’re Gonna Leave, Stephen Marley

Lastly, but certainly not least, feast your eyes on TUSK’s feature Generate Some Heat, starting on page 12. Models Kristen and James heated up the Cherry Creek Reservoir and show us how these cold winter months in Colorado can be enjoyed.

Honey Bee, Tom Petty Being with you, Basement Jaxx

I received some amazing feedback and compliments on the inaugural issue of TUSK. Thank you all for your support and love. I had over 250 views on my website and uncounted views on my PDF issue. My personal goal, is to double that number with this issue. My hope is that TUSK evolves and each issue improves as I continue to learn and grow during this process.

This month I Love...

A few of my favorite things

Drink this. If

you haven’t tried Teakoe tea yet, get on it before you’re the last of your friends to know about them. Teakoe is an up and coming Colorado company I can’t get enough of lately. I was given some Teakoe tea as a gift, and I have been addicted to my daily cup for a late afternoon lift. There’s something about making your own tea with gorgeous and aromatic blends of leaves that really does make you feel like you are doing something good for yourself. Teakoe features many different blends with great names and chuckle worthy tag lines such as EMPOWER mint, conďŹ dence: either you’re born with it or you drink this. View all of their avors with colorful pictures of each, on their website. You can tell immediately that this is not your average tea company. They have a fresh style and youth appeal with unique packaging and design. As a designer myself, I’m impressed

“Our vision is to expose everyone to the health beneďŹ ts of tea, and to make high quality teas available to people who are not your average tea drinker. We have created some unique blends, and also offer a few classics with our own twist.â€? - Ryan Peterson, President of Operations with the strong identity they have created for themselves in such a short amount of time. I’ve seen Teakoe around town in all the right places, including the Cherry Creek Farmers Market and local fashion shows. Teakoe was founded by Pete Jokisch in 2008, and shortly after that Ryan Peterson,

President of Operations joined in. Six months ago Dave Marchitti was brought onboard to help develop the business side of things. You can now purchase all of Teakoe’s products, as well as learn more about them, on their website. Teakoe www.teakoe.com

Denver Restaurants we love and Frequent

Best Restaurants in Denver for a Valentine’s Day Date, or really any night out. With all the amazing restaurants we have in Denver, I can’t believe how often Shane and I will go blank on places to go eat on any given Saturday. Not to say our favorite standbys don’t quickly come up, but when we feel like trying somewhere new, or have a speciďŹ c request - it can sadly become a frustrating situation. For that reason, we came up with an idea to feature a few of our favorite restaurants for a special night out. We live in the Congress Park Neighborhood, and we tend to try to patronize local and independent companies. When we started building our list, we thought we would certainly agree on the best and what makes them special. Two hours into it, we agreed on the best, but we we realized what stood out to one of us, was secondary to the other. The restaurants we chose are all wonderful and our all time favorites.

Here’s how it worked:

We did not rate service simply because each of these restaurants have stellar service and management. Our top picks listed are all similar in price range, around $14 - $25 a plate. Some are a little less expensive, and some more. Check out their websites to ďŹ nd out more about the menu, prices, and reservation policies. Also, quite a few restaurants in Denver create a prix ďŹ xe menu for Valentine’s Day. Not our favorite option, but look into that as well when you visit their websites. We did not include addresses, or phone numbers, but all the restaurants are in the Denver Metro and we built links to all their websites to make it easy for you. There are many wonderful restaurants we didn’t mention and quite a few we would love to experience, but have not had the opportunity. Please, send us an email of your favorites and we will deďŹ nitely add them to our list to try.

We picked 18 of our favorite local restaurants. Then we came up with six ways of describing the atmosphere, and four categories to describe the cuisine. We went through and each chose the most appropriate from both categories for each location.

Private Party

Destination: Your House By Shane Faddis Photography: Denise Faddis

The Grocery Cart: (Hopefully some of these things

Having trouble picking the perfect place or getting the right reservation? Sometimes it’s best to stay in, and cooking a Valentine’s Day meal for that special someone in your life can be easy, as well as delicious. I’ve tried to put together some tapas ideas that are wallet conscience, bring big avor, are easy to prepare. And don’t leave you feeling too full for any after dinner activities that you may have planned.

The Menu: --King Crab Legs with Drawn Butter --Filet Minon with Broiled Portobello Mushroom --Pork Loin with sliced Avocado and Mango --Chocolate Covered Strawberries

are already in the fridge or pantry) --5 Roma tomatoes --1 ripe Mangos --1 ripe avocados --Balsamic Vinegar --Olive Oil --sugar --unsalted butter --8 oz. Bakers Dark Chocolate --household parafďŹ n wax --3/4 pound King Crab Legs --4 – 6 oz. Filet Minon --1 lg. Portobello mushroom --4 – 6 oz. pork loin or chop --1/2 lb. fresh Strawberries --garlic and onion powder --ground Cumin --Grill Time Steak Seasoning --Jamaican Jerk Blend

King Crab Legs Lg. stock pot, 2/3 full of water. 1/2 c. lemon juice, 1/2 c. cajun seasoning, 2 Tbls. butter, 2 Tbls. sugar. Bring water to rolling boil, add crab legs and cover. When water returns to full boiling, leave covered, and remove from heat. (when serving, use kitchen shears to cut down each leg, length wise) A candle lit butter melter is a must and can picked up at Cost Plus or Bed Bath and Beyond.

--Cajun or Creole seasoned salt

Filet Minon with Broiled Portobello Mushroom Turn on your oven’s broiler. On your broiling pan arrange the Filet, the Portobello, and the cut of pork a few inches apart. Rub each with a light coating of olive oil (both sides). Apply a dusting of onion powder, garlic powder, salt, and pepper (both sides). On the ďŹ let only, apply a small amount of ground cumin and grill time steak seasoning. Broil all together on middle oven rack for approx. 3 - 5 min per side (steak should be rare in the middle). Thinly slice the steak and mushroom and arrange alternating. 231) @;>>CM=L?;NCP? =IG

$?<LO;LS

Pork Loin with Sliced Avocado and Mango

TUSK

Prepare and cook the pork as described in the ďŹ let section, but before broiling, season both sides with The Spice Hunter Jamaican Jerk Seasoning. While the meat and mushroom are cooking (all 3 items should cook the same amount of time, your steak will be rare to med. rare, but your pork will be a solid med. well) halve your avocado and slice the peel from your Mango. Make long thin slices of each, along with the pork, and arrange alternating. Drizzle with Balsamic Vinegar. These are all fairly rich dishes, so it wouldn’t hurt to prepare a small salad beforehand, or simply slice some tomato to put out.

Chocolate Covered Strawberries Place a wax paper covered plate in the freezer for at least 30 minutes. Melt your chocolate in a double boiler (if you don’t have a double boiler, use a small sauce pan and heat up very slowly over low heat), add a small amount of parafďŹ n wax and melt thoroughly. Wash and pat dry your strawberries. Remove the plate from the freezer. Double dip each strawberry waiting a few seconds in between dips and place on freezer plate. When all strawberries are dipped, immediately place in the fridge.

The Chef and Author: Shane Faddis Shane has worked as a restaurant manager and chef in the past but these days he prefers to cook at home for a party of two.

Presentation I prefer white dishes, they don’t compete with the food - and food is what it’s all about. I also don’t believe in things looking too composed or perfect. After all, this should be a fun night with you and your loved one. Using your hands and comparing delicious avors and textures. Keep it simple, have fun, and enjoy. 231) @;>>CM=L?;NCP? =IG

Dress For Success Denver A few years back I was searching Denver for a non-proďŹ t that I could volunteer with. I wanted to ďŹ nd somewhere I would feel comfortable, connected to the people and the mission, and would work with my schedule. Dress for Success Denver was the fourth place I called and interviewed for, and I was immediately impressed. At this time, in February 2006, the Denver chapter of Dress For Success was only a few months old. Kathy Bacon was the Director, and she was working tirelessly to bring it all together. Three years later Dress For Success is thriving and continues to grow. In fact, in 2009 they served over 1000 women! Annabel Lee by Edgar Allan Poe (published 1849) It was many and many a year ago, In a kingdom by the sea, That a maiden there lived whom you may know By the name of ANNABEL LEE;-And this maiden she lived with no other thought Than to love and be loved by me. She was a child and I was a child, In this kingdom by the sea, But we loved with a love that was more than love-I and my Annabel Lee-With a love that the winged seraphs of heaven Coveted her and me. And this was the reason that, long ago, In this kingdom by the sea, A wind blew out of a cloud by night Chilling my Annabel Lee; So that her high-born kinsman came And bore her away from me, To shut her up in a sepulchre In this kingdom by the sea. The angels, not half so happy in Heaven, Went envying her and me:-Yes! that was the reason (as all men know, In this kingdom by the sea) That the wind came out of a cloud, chilling And killing my Annabel Lee. But our love it was stronger by far than the love Of those who were older than we-Of many far wiser than weAnd neither the angels in Heaven above, Nor the demons down under the sea, Can ever dissever my soul from the soul Of the beautiful Annabel Lee:-For the moon never beams without bringing me dreams Of the beautiful Annabel Lee; And the stars never rise but I see the bright eyes Of the beautiful Annabel Lee; And so, all the night-tide, I lie down by the side Of my darling, my darling, my life and my bride, In her sepulchre there by the sea-In her tomb by the side of the sea.
