Summer 2011

Summertime;

those special few months that seem to fly by in a flash yet, once in while you get days that seem to go on forever. A strange contradiction but the perfect way to explain what makes this time of year so special. To me, the Summer is what I best relate to as the end of the year. I suppose it has something to do with all those years spent in school - connecting with the Fall as the beginning. A new school, new grade, new clothes, new supplies, maybe even a new neighborhood. More than that though, I feel like Summer is the final opportunity to test out all that you’ve learned in the last year. In school that meant still being at the top. Proving that you know the ropes; know the ins and outs of your grade before you are dumped on to the start line yet again. Feeling exposed and vulnerable to “the new” coming your way. Those years spent going from feeling like we know it all, to feeling like we know nothing, set us up perfectly for the incredible journey that is our life. Finding a way to recognize that the beginning of a new stage in life is ultimately what we hope to continue to collide into year after year. A reminder that it feels great to become a master at whatever you so choose, but it feels even better to be thrown back into the chaos and unknowing start of something fresh and foreign. I look at Summer as a way to enjoy the fruits of my year’s labor and then ceremoniously force myself to begin something new no matter how scary it is to be back at the start line. The good news is you get to bring all that you have learned with you, and access it anyway you wish.

New Young Electric Hailing out of Edmonton, Alberta; The Fight comes to TUSK this month with their latest contender - New Young Electric. An eclectic sound; combining some rock-a-billy and 80’s UK alt/punk with some modern stylings that are distinctly their own, New Young Electric is an album worth a listen all the way through. I found myself drawing comparisons to Brian Setzer, The Godfthers, and The Church, although definitely not a mimic of any of them. The lead off, and reprise finish, with the track Paper Tiger is one of those songs that makes you feel like it’s one of your old fav’s, even though it’s the first time you’ve heard it. Nothing exceedingly ground breaking here, but i enjoyed this album very much, and suspect i would enjoy a live show even more. Pefectly suited to a venue such as The Bluebird (TUSK’s neighborhood theater), or perhaps The Marquis, I look forward to their mile high debut. Go to http://newyoungelectric.com to listen for yourself, if you like what you hear - send ‘em a shout out and lets see if we can bring a little northern diversity to town in 2012.

Underground Music Showcase set to bring bands, fans in droves for 11th year. By Sara Castellanos Eleven years ago, a visionary Denver Post entertainment reporter organized a one-night concert series with a handful of local, independent bands of whom he felt were deserving of more attention.. That humble event developed into the Denver Post Underground Music Showcase, which has grown exponentially over the years. Between July 21 and 24, more than 300 local and national artists will perform in 25 bars, shops, outdoor stages and restaurants along South Broadway in Denver. From indie rock bands the Epilogues and John Common and Blinding Flashes of Light, to rising stars Snake Rattle Rattle Snake and Achille Lauro, there’s a vast spectrum of genres and styles, but the showcase’s target audience is music aficionados. “We’re definitely looking at music lovers,” said Kendall Smith, event director for the Underground Music Showcase, who took the reins three years ago. “The breadth and width of the Denver music scene and the amount of talent and variety of talent we have is amazing, and that’s what makes us so great.” Music junkies try to organize their days around seeing their favorite bands perform in intimate venues, but an unfamiliar song blaring from the windows of a dive bar or clothing store will undoubtedly pull them in, Smith said. “People can sample stuff, plan their day as much as

they want, but inevitably, they are going to stumble upon a new band that they can follow,” he said. The showcase is chock-full of bands that are eclectic, not confined to one genre, barrier-breaking and unique, Smith said. “There’s no defining sound, which is great,” he said. “If you come to UMS you might see the same person playing in three different bands, all distinctly different.” Since it was founded, the Underground Music Showcase has proved to be a springboard for bands like the Flobots, DeVotchka, Nathaniel Rateliff, The Fray, and Paper Bird. “There are some bands who some of their first gigs were the UMS,” Smith said. This year, there are dozens of new or relatively unknown bands waiting to be discovered by adoring Denver fans like Bear Antler, All Liver No Onions, 200 Million Years, Birdy and Polkanauts. Last year, more than 9,000 people attended the event. Smith hopes attendance will reach 10,000 this year, “if the weather cooperates”. Artists will perform in 25 venues that are virtually

walking distance from each other, including Club 404, Hi-Dive, Indy Ink, the Mayan Theatre, Michaelangelo’s Coffee & Wine Bar, Sobo 151 and Sputnik. Most of the businesses along South Broadway donate their space because they find that the showcase brings in foot traffic and potential customers. “There are a few really good, traditional venues like 3 Kings Tavern, the Skylark and the Hi-Dive, but then you throw in the Hornet or the Irish Rover that doesn’t host music a lot,” Smith said. This year, the showcase will host a series of panel discussions that offer advice and insight for fledging artists from seasoned vets in the music industry. Also, the showcase will include its first series of film screenings this year at the Mayan Theatre. The Underground Music Showcase was inducted this year to the Denver Post Community Foundation, which means the proceeds will go into the foundation and redistributed to local nonprofit foundations and charities. It’s a win-win situation for everybody involved — music lovers will be satiated, artists get the chance to perform in front of live audiences, and ticket sales go to a good cause, Smith said. “It’s a good thing to support all these artists in this thriving scene we have,” he said. “We have a music

scene that keeps getting better year after year and it’s evidenced in events like this.” Tickets: four-day passes are $30 until July 20, $40 day of. For a full list of artists, venues and appearances, visit www.theums.com.

Quick Facts about the Underground Music Showcase: In 2009, the UMS expanded to a four-day music and art festival that included 225-plus local and national-level performers in its fold of rock bands, comedians and singer-songwriters. In 2010, the UMS was four days of exceptional goodness from July 22-25 — featuring more than 300 skilled bands and artists in over 25 venues. For 2011, the UMS is determined to top last year. Over 325 performances on 25 stages! Stay tuned for more information on our great venues and vast array of performers. From www.theums.com.

Tell us a little about yourself?

I am married to a fantastic man who supports me in all my endeavors even when he questions them. I have a beautiful little girl that is 5 going on 16. She is already giving me a run for my money. She is my gift of life and my angel that reminds me every day good things happen. I like to consider myself a kind hearted person who does not like confrontation and tries to keep everyone/everything around me happy and peaceful as much as possible. I work hard to keep a good balance of being there for my family as a wife and mom as well as pursuing my dreams and doing things for myself so I don’t forget what makes me, me. I think that’s when people start to become unhappy is when they forget who they are and what makes them feel alive as an individual. You can have both and I feel the most comfortable with myself and my life more now than ever.

KARA STARZ Meet Kara Starz, owner of Starz Selection - a company dedicated to creating unique and beautiful accessories. This driven and hard working woman listened to her heart and built her business one step at a time. Interview & Photography By Denise Faddis

Tell us about Starz Selection?

I used to work in the Mortgage business for years. It was a great job and I really enjoyed the people I worked with but I never felt fulfilled. I was always looking for a way to make a flower arrangement or create something for the office. We moved to Florida and I without warning got pregnant right away and was too sick to be able to work. I had a lot of free time on my hands so I used that to think about what I wanted out of my life so I could be true to myself. I would go to the beach and soak in the amazing scenery and jot down my thoughts and things that inspired me. I started creating headbands to match my little ones outfits and people started asking me where I bought them. I then decided to make a few accessories and sold them to family and friends. Then people started asking them where they got the pieces and that is where I decided to branch out and start up my website. Since then I have worked with countless brides, productions, magazines and it’s so exciting for me to see where hard work has brought my designs so far! I would love to design hand bags, clothing and shoes in addition to what I do now. My mind is always going with what could be and what I would love to do with all of the ideas and creations I have. I feel like I am ready for the next step or adventure in my life.

What inspires your designs?

Everything around me inspires me especially when I am not trying to come up with idea. That is when I feel I get my best design ideas. I am always looking for ways to improve what I have created. I love camping and the outdoors because it’s so inspiring to me. Nature whether it’s the mountains or the beach allows me to dream and create.

What do you love most about owning your own business?

things that don’t deserve our attention. Focusing on the negative things in life we have no control over just puts us in a serious funk and it’s not worth it. Surround yourself with positive thoughts and healthy relationships and good will come out of it.

What makes Starz Selection unique?

Best or most impactful childhood memory?

Being able to be creative and work my own hours. I love being able to be their for my family and then stay up late and create when everyone is off dreaming.

The designs and my customer service. I do my very best to make sure I have created a custom it takes a little alteration on a piece. I make sure that I put myself in the customers position and work with them accordingly. It’s not just about money it’s about being able to be a positive experience that puts people at peace with at least one aspect of a big event.

Favorite Denver restaurant or bar?

The Happy Sumo! I LOVE their V.I.P 2 for 1 sushi roll nights! We will prepare a take along snack for the little one since she’s not yet acquired a taste for sushi, let her play on the iphone and eat amazing sushi! Fantastic!

Best advice you have ever been given?

Well I will phrase it a little softer than my dad said to me :) but I always remind myself when times get tough or something happens that is hurtful. “Don’t sweat the small stuff and most things are small stuff” I think myself included tend to dwell on the small

Who or what inspires you?

I would say my greatest inspiration for my life as a whole is my faith and trust in God and knowing that there is a reason and purpose for everything we go through in life be it good or bad even when we can’t understand it

Where can TUSK readers purchase your designs?

www.starzselection.esty.com is a good place to start. I like to keep my items listed to a minimum so I have room for custom designs and creations. Feel free to contact me with a design in mind.

TUSK MAGAZINE | AROUND TOWN

Rescued Relics This weekend after Sunday brunch, wander over to the neighborhood’s new boutique.

Tell us about Rescued Relics.

Shirlene Kitchen and I have been friends for ages now and we’ve always been involved in creative pursuits. I primarily write (http://thewhatnotblog.blogspot. com) and she has been an entreprenuer for forever. The furniture idea came to us one morning over coffee. We wanted to take our painting skills and turn them into a profitable business.

What inspires your designs and refinishing techniques?

Each individual piece gives me inspiration. I know it drives Shirlene crazy, but sometimes it takes me a month to figure out how I’m going to transform a piece of furniture. Other times I see what it can become instantly. I like playing with multiple colors so that when I distress it there is a surprise.

What makes Rescued Relics unique?

We create one-of-a-kind furniture that incorporates a recycling mentality. Our tagline is “Reinventing Found Furniture”. Many of the items we pick up have been discarded. We make them beautiful. We’re also different because our prices are kept below $500 for the most part. That’s an important component to our business--affordability.

What did you do before you opened your own business?

I used to train people to be English teachers. I still teach part-time, but I’m glad I have the opportunity to do other things now. I’m also writing a book about dating, relationships, and sex.

What do you love most about owning Rescued Relics?

Shirlene and I joke that we’ve never talked as much as we do now. I love getting to spend a lot of quality time with my friend.

What is your favorite restaurant or bar in Denver?

I love dive bars on Colfax and any restaurant with a patio. We go to Shells and Sauce a lot now (it’s across the street from our boutique), and it’s a terrific highquality neighborhood establishment. I’m thrilled to be in Congress Park!

What music inspires you?

My favorite local band is the Informants--I love Kerry’s strong, husky voice. Any song with clever lyrics and a beat that gets folks moving works for me!

What is your most impactful or memorable childhood memory?

I once jumped over a planter and swore I was flying. I still have very vivid dreams where I’m flying through the sky. I love them.

What’s the best advice you have ever been given?

“Men are like buses. A new one comes along every 15 minutes.” I like the idea of not getting hung up on one guy just because it doesn’t work out. I spend a lot of energy writing about midlife dating and the ins and outs of the dating game. It can be exhausting, but I never run out of material.

How can TUSK readers learn more about Rescued Relics and purchase your products?

Visit our website at http://rescuedrelics.blogspot. com or come to the boutique W-SU at the 12th Street entrance of 1167 Elizabeth St. Check the website for hours. We have terrific furniture and accessories. We also have artists who rent space from us, so there is always something for everyone. Learn more at http://rescuedrelics.blogspot.com

Lowrider Magazine parked its new 2011 tour into Denver’s National Western Complex on Sunday, July 10th 2011. The best of the best in the region came out to compete for Mile High Lowrider bragging rights. Lowrider Magazines Denver show offered over 100 custom cars, 70 bikes, live tattooing and musical performances by MC Magic and Too Short. Spectators enjoyed old school jams while shopping for the latest in primo car accessories, a car model bikini contest and some of the best people watching in town. Fans of the Lowrider were surrounded with colorful multi-layered paint jobs, sparkling gold and chrome rims, raised hydraulic jacks, and airbrushed murals that reflected the owner’s personal style and design. The interiors flowed with everything from plush velvet, snake skin, custom wood paneling, and audio and video systems that would make Too Short himself jealous. Thankfully, the over the top car show confirmed something that I have always believed, that Denver is a serious classic car haven. Local car clubs represented the best in not just Lowriders but in the classic restore as well. Vintage cars, trucks and bikes were lovingly pimped out by not just their owners but a team of friends, family and peers. Years of primping were obviously poured into these fine machines. You could say the show bordered on Miss America style pageantry. Shout outs must be given to some of Colorado’s top contributing car clubs. If you are a classic car or lowrider appreciator, you have to check these guys out: Natural High of Denver, Old Memories of Denver, East Side Lowride of Pueblo, Rollerz Only, Sweet Dreams of Denver and Viejitos Car Club of Denver. I was beginning to think that the good ol’ classic car restore and lowrider guys were a dying breed. I’m happy to say I was wrong. Whether you are an enthusiast or just a spectator, Lowrider Magazine’s 2011 Tour offered something for everyone. This tour is not to be missed. Lowrider Magazine’s 2011 Tour is Headed To Las VEGAS!!!
