Let us consider any number, say 5 then the multiples of 5 which we can have are 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, 35, 40, 45, 50, etc. Suppose, if we have to calculate the Least common denominator of any of the two fractions then firstly we have to see those multiples of the denominators of the fractions which are common. The common multiple when considered for two numbers is such a number which is the multiple of both the numbers. The least multiple of all the multiples which are common, of the two no. is called as the least common multiple. This least common multiple of the denominators of the two fractions is referred as the Least common denominator of those two fractions. Now let us consider an example in which we have to calculate the least common multiple of 4 and 6. To answer this example in the easiest form, we will first find some of the multiples of both the numbers and then try to find the common multiple from the two lists which is lowest. From the above two lists, we notice that all the numbers 12, 24, 36, 48 and 60 are those multiples of 4 and 6 which are common but out of them the least one is the lowest common multiple which happens to be 12 in this given example. Now let us have a look on another example in which we have to determine the Least common denominator of 4/9 and 7/12. Thus the highest common factor of the two denominators 9 and 12 is 3. Therefore by multiplying 9 and 12 we get 108 and dividing it by 3 we get 36 which is the answer for the Least common denominator.
