Formula for Area of a Rectangle Formula for Area of a Rectangle In this session we are going to work on Formula for Area of a Rectangle. First we are going to discuss all about the rectangle. A rectangle is a four sided figure, which we call a polygon. We say that a polygon is a closed figure formed by joining three or more line segments. If the polygon is formed by four line segments, then we call it a quadrilateral. Quadrilaterals can be of different types. Some of the common quadrilaterals are square, a rectangle, a parallelogram, rhombus, trapezium, kite all are the examples of a quadrilateral . If we look at the square, it is a quadrilateral (which has all the four sides equal with all angles equal to 90 degrees.) and the rectangle is the figure (with opposite sides equal with all angles of 90 degrees.) Here in this session we are going to learn about the area of the rectangle. Before we study about the Formula for Area of a Rectangle, we must understand what is the basic difference between the two terms Perimeter and the rectangle? Area is the space on the plane which is covered by the two dimension figure.

On the other hand we look at the perimeter; it is the length of the boundary of any closed figure. Now let us talk about a park. If a park is to be fenced, we take the perimeter into consideration; on other hand if we need to grass the whole park then we are talking about the area of the park. Similarly if we have a plot and we are planning to make the boundary wall of the plot, in such a case we are talking about the perimeter of the wall. But if we talk about flooring the plot with the cement, then we need to calculate the area of the plot we are talking about. To find the area of the rectangle, we must know two things: the length and the breadth of the rectangle. Now in order to find the Area of the rectangle we write: Area = Length * Breadth Suppose the plot is 20 meter long and 15 meter wide, then to find the area of the plot we proceed as follows: Length of plot = 20 meters Breadth of the plot = 15 meters So area = L * B = 20 * 15 = 300 square meters Also sometimes we come across the situations where we do not know one of the sides of the rectangle, and in place of it we have the diagonal of the rectangle as a known value.

Now as we know that all sides of the rectangle are of 90 degrees, so we use Pythagoras theorem on the right triangle so formed. i. e. H2 = l2 + B2 and thus find the side of the rectangle. Once the unknown side of the rectangle is known, we are easily able to find the area of the rectangle using the above mentioned formula of the area of the rectangle. Always remember that the area of the rectangle is calculated in square meters. Also the perimeter is the length so we measure it in unit of the length.
