Here we are going to study about Place Value.

The value of digits where the digit is in the number. We have ones, tens , hundreds … as the place value. If we have a number say 247, we start counting the place from the right to left side.

Thus we observe that the place value of 7 is ones, place value of 4 is tens and the place value of 2 is hundred.

We also must know that 10 ones makes tens , 10 tens makes hundreds, 10 hundreds makes thousands and so on…. It goes for the larger numbers.

The numbers which can are written after decimal point have the place value as tenth, hundredth , thousandth….

We will learn to find the place value of the digits in the given number: In 35.67: Place value of 3 is tens, Place value of 5 is ones, place value of 6 is tenth and the place value of 7 is hundredth In 175.73 we have place value of 1 is hundred, place value of 7 is tens and the place value of 5 is ones. Similarly we have 7 placed after decimal, so the place value of 7 is tenth and the place value of 3 is hundredth.

Whenever the two or more numbers are added or we operate subtraction of the two numbers, only the numbers with the same place value are placed one after another and then the mathematical operation is performed.

Let us take an example of adding the numbers say 357 + 42 Here we first put the numbers from right to left under their proper place values and then perform the addition operation.

b) The difference of two integers is also an integer, i.e. a - b is also an integer. If a = 5 and b = 3, then a - b = 5 - 3 = 2 is also an integer. c) The product of two integers is also an integer, i.e. a * b is also an integer. If a = 5 and b = 3, then a * b = 5 * 3 = 15 is also an integer.

d) The quotient of two integers is not an integer, i.e. a / b is not an integer. If a = 5 and b = 3, then a / b = 5 / 3 is not an integer.

If a and b are any two integers, then closure property holds true for addition and multiplication but does not holds true for subtraction and division.

We have 7 and 2 with the place value ones, 5 and 4 with the place value tens and 3 is alone at the hundreds place If the sum of digits exceeds 9, i.e. 10 or above then the number at the tens place will be taken to the next place and then it is called a carried over number . A carried over number is added with the next place value.

We should also remember that the number with the decimal should be written in such a way that a decimal of the first number comes with the decimal of the second number.

We observe that as 6 was alone after decimal in 23.6, so a 0 is placed at the hundredth place under 4 to perform the addition.
