What is a Dependent Variable What is a Dependent Variable In mathematics variable is a letter which represents an unknown number and variables play very important role in mathematics What is a Dependent Variable? and there are two types of variable dependent variable and independent variable . Dependent variable are those whose value is depend on other variable and independent variable are those who does not depend on other variable. In mathematics, a variable value is determined by the value assumed by independent variable. For example we take area of circle A= πr2 then value of a is depend on the value of radius r so. A is dependent variable and r is independent variable and now we have to assume the value of radius r and the by putting the value or r in the equation we get the value of A. Suppose we have one equation y=4g+7h ,in this equation y , g and h are variables which contain some value and y is represent in terms of g and h so y is dependent and g and h are independent variable .

Now if we have two variable x and y in a relationship and y is specified in terms of x, then y is dependent variable and x is independent variable. Now we are going to discuss what is dependent variable , basically a dependent variable are those in an expression. equation and function whose value is depend on one or more independent variable and by assuming the values of these independent variable we get the value of dependent variable and this value we get is the output of the equation. To understand dependent variable more clearly example is given below For example:1. p = 3q , in this equation p variable is depend on value of q variable so p is dependent variable and q is independent variable by this example we clearly understood the meaning of dependent variable because p value depend on q value. 2. x = 3y+z , in this equation x is dependent variable and y and z are independent variable and by assuming the value of y and z we get the value of x. 3. z = 3x2+5y3 , in this equation z is dependent variable and x and y are independent variable and again by assuming the value of x and y we get the value of z. The value of dependent variable independent variable.

changed whenever there is change in the value of

Suppose we have equation x=2+y , in this equation x is dependent variable and y is independent variable now if we assume the value of y is 2 then value of x becomes 4 and if we choose 6 as value of y then the value of x becomes 8 by this we clearly see that the value

of x is directly depend on the value of y as the y value change , value of x is also change so x is dependent variable and y is independent variable. Example 1 :- Find the value of y in the following equation, y = 3x2 + 2x + 4 when the value of x is equal to 3. Solution :- Given equation: y = 3x2 + 2x + 4 Now substitute the value of x as 3 in the given equation y = 3(3)2 + 2(3) + 4 Solving the equation we get, y = 3(9) + 2(3) + 4 y = 27 + 6 + 4 y = 37 Therefore the ‘y’ is said to be as dependent variable and ‘x’ is said to be as independent variable. Example 2: Find the area for the following: a) Circle when radius ‘r’ = 3 cm. b) Rectangle when its length (l) = 6cm and its breadth (b) = 4 cm.
