National Science Foundation •

The National Science Foundation was established by the NSF Act of 1950 (Public Law 81507). NSF adopted the purpose of that Act as its mission: “to promote the progress of science; to advance the national health, prosperity, and welfare; to secure the national defense; and for other purposes.”

The agency also supports "high-risk, high pay-off" ideas, novel collaborations and numerous projects that may seem like science fiction today, but which the public will take for granted tomorrow.

NSF's job is to determine where the frontiers are, identify the leading U.S. pioneers in these fields and provide money and equipment to help them continue.

Scholarships for students, big ticket projects that include an element of research (e.g., changing classroom model to project- or problem-based)
