AB OUT: With no shortage of thoughtfulness in its harmony, Jason Nitsch's latest lyrical work is decidedly delicate in its texture and positive in its message. Its graceful woodwinds, combined with bold brass and unique percussi on textures, create a beautifully uplifting work that lives up to its inspiration. FROM THE COMPOSER: Serenity was composed in honor of Anna Cesario, and premiered by her father Dr. Robert Cesario and the Wind Ensemble from the University of Missouri M&T in 2011. Anna was a gifted oboe and clarinet player, and so those instruments are featured in the peace. It was the desire of the family that the work be a celebration instead of a work of mourning. So, great care was taken in constructing a lovely melody and utilizing pleasant chords and harmonic structures to signify the beauty of thi s life which was lost too young. This piece has some very specific tempo markings, but eh conductor should take great discretion to allow the music to li ve in a calm and un-rushed manner always. Although it is intended to be a pleasant and harmonious experience, there is some intended harmonic dissonance which should be embraced and not retreated from. Great care should be taken approaching measure 94 as the musical momentum pushing into that phrase should build and retreat in favor of the soloists. The title is taken from a quote attributed to American di plomat Adlai Stevenson II: “Your days are short here; this is the last of your springs. And now in the serenity and quiet of this lovely place, touch the depths of truth, feel the hem of Heaven. You will go away with old, good friends.” DURATION: 6'05" Scan to let the composer
