01 PROJECT

ACCESSIBLE DESIGN STUDY

A life worth living. An adaptive multi-task gardening tool that will allow people with limitations to work in the garden with less pain and frustration.

PROBLEM STATEMENT

People with limitations having to give up participating in activities that give them joy can lead to depression.

OBJECTIVE: Design a product that could help aid senior citizens and people with limited mobility to participate in activities that would allow the pursuit of joy.

PAIN POINTS

SENIOR CITIZENS Adapting to aches and pains.

WHEELCHAIR BOUND Independence while gardening.

MOBILITY LIMITATIONS Overcoming gardening limitations.

ADAPTIVE GARDENING TOOL

Empathic Research

VISION IMPAIRMENT

ARTHRITIS OF THE HANDS

Color reliance on identifying items. The depth of field is reduced. Clutter became noise.

Difficulty opening packages. Difficulty holding & opening lids. Difficulty putting on gloves.

FINAL Observations: I came into the emphatic research exercise expecting physical struggles, but I realized the emotional toll on a person is a greater one. Physical efforts can be strenuous, but one can learn to overcome them by adaptation. The emotional toll can be a crippling and leave one feeling defeated. The fear of aging intensified for me. As a designer, I will need to design things with emotions & people’s sense of well being in mind.

CURRENT TOOLS ON THE MARKET

PRO: Mobility to move.

PRO: Better grip.

CON: Need good balance and hard to get up.

CON: Not adjustable.

PRO: Relieve knee pain.

PRO: Convenient

CON: Need a strong upper body and knees to get up.

CON: Too heavy.

ADAPTIVE GARDENING TOOL

Testing Concepts

Support shield to help garden while reaching into a planter to help alleviate back pain.

Rotating garden bed for wheelchair access.

CON: Did not support as well, and the tester did not feel secure.

CON: The wheel took up a lot of visual space.

CONCEPTS THAT FELL SHORT

Garden knee pad with a spring-loaded handle to assist with getting up.

Seed sewing stick allows for the user to sow seeds while standing up to avoid having to bend.

CON: The handles were in awkward positions, and the tester still had a hard time getting up.

CON: The concept worked well, but it was too limiting. Not multi-functional enough.

FORM STUDY

Speed Form Capturing speed through light, lines, and its movements.

OBJECTIVE Design a symmetrical form that conveys speed.

LINES Conveys movement.

LIGHT & SHADOW Conveys acceleration.

WAVES Directs the flow of motion.

SPEED FORM

Sketch Explorations

The strength of the edge pushes the line forward & speeds up to the tip.

Fluid lines conveys movements. Thicker undercut shadow lines slows down.

The speed form conceptualizes as a spaceship.

SPEED FORM

Sketch Explorations 1. CROSS-SECTIONS It is used to keep the form symmetrical. 2. CLAY MODEL Model ready to pour the first half of the mold.

3. TWO-PART MOLD Preparation of the second half of the mold.

5. PAINTING Model is primed and painted to highlight the line throughout the form. 4. BONDO & SANDING Once the polymer model is set, Bondo is applied to any imperfections & model is then sanded. CROSS-SECTIONS IS CRUCIAL TO KEEPING THE FORM SYMMETRICAL.

SPEED FORM

Final Orthographic

Hand sketching the orthographic allowed for pay special attention to be made to the details where possible light would bounce off the form to convey speed.

SPEED FORM

Final Model

Light bounces off the form, allowing the eyes to move along the lines as it conveys speed.

REDESIGN STUDY

Dremel Redesign existing Dremel to improve the product’s usability for a different demographic of users.

PROBLEM STATEMENT

A demographic of users who are wasting money hiring handyman to do simple tasks around the home because they are intimidated to use electric tools. Many times it’s due to the fact the current tools on the market are too large for their hands, and they find it hard to control the device.

OBJECTIVE: Having a tool that would give the users the power of an electric machine and the handling of a stylus would provide them with the confidence to do more around the house without having to spend hundreds of dollars on a handyman.

Baseball Inner Glove A universal glove that uses the D3O shock absorbing technology to dampen the impact when players are fielding or batting.

PROBLEM STATEMENT

Hand injuries among youth baseball players are a growing problem, and it is due to the player not catching a ball in the pocket of the glove or not hitting a ball at the sweet spot.

OBJECTIVE: The project is to take an existing sports product currently on the market that protects against injuries and improve upon it through research and development. Redesign the glove to better protect the young players from palm pain for both fielding and batting. A universal glove to accommodate the player’s needs during a game will be a game-changer in the industry.

Fielding D30 shock absorbing pads placed throughout the glove will protect the hand from palm impact.

Leather shock-absorbing the palm side for protection while catching.

The glove is worn inside a baseball glove for protection.

Once done fielding, the player may switch over the glove to use as batting gloves.

Batting Switching the glove over to the other side to use as a batting glove allows the player to hit the ball with confidence. The added D30 shock-absorbing pads and silicone grip will reduce chances for injury.

After fielding, remove the glove and flip over to the other side for batting.

Switch the glove to the black side with a silicone grip for batting.

Silicone grip allows for a comfortable hold, while the shock-absorbing pad damper vibration of the ball to bat impact.
